This Reader/Writer provides theability to write information to and read information from contactlessIC cards using Sony’s FeliCa technology, such as the “wave” smartcard. Sony’s FeliCa chip technology can be incorporated intocontactless IC cards and devices.If you do not know whether your contactless IC card is compatiblewith the Reader/Writer, consult with an information source shownon your card about the compatibility.System RequirementsYou can use this Reader/Writer only in the United States. You shouldhave already downloaded the software that enables theReader/Writer and Smart Card to function when you purchasedor signed-up for the Smart Card on-line. If not, follow thesesteps.• The FeliCa Reader/Writer Software may be updated withenhancements. You’ll be notified when they occur.1Confirm that the Reader/Writer is unpluggedfrom your computer.2Download and Install the FeliCa Reader/WriterSoftware.1Start up your computer.2If you use Windows 2000 or Windows XP, log on to Windowsusing an account/user that can install programs(Administrator Account).3Shut down all active programs. If virus protection software isactive, the installation may not be completed properly.4Download the FeliCa Reader/Writer Software from our Website (http://www.my.sony.com/smartcard).5Click the downloaded file and install it according to theinstructions shown on the display.6If an instruction requesting you to restart the computerappears, restart the computer.<Tips>• If the installation does not complete successfully, remove thewave smart card software using [Add/Remove Applications]found in the computer’s “Control Panel” (if you use WindowsXP, [Add/Remove Programs]), restart the computer, and thenperform the procedure over again from the beginning. Confirmthat the Reader/Writer is unplugged from your computer beforerestarting the computer.• For details on the installation procedure, refer to our Web site(http://www.my.sony.com/smartcard).Using the Reader/Writer1Put Your Smart Card or Your Device Using FeliCaChip Technology on the Reader/Writer.Put the Smart Card or device on the Reader/Writer so that thecenter of the Smart Card or device comes to just above theFeliCa Platform Mark.a) A FeliCa Platform Mark indicates that the product isdesigned for a multiapplication platform using the FeliCatechnology.Notes• If the surface on which you put the Reader/Writer is made of metal,the Reader/Writer may not operate properly.• Make sure to put only one Smart Card or device on the read/writesurface. If you put more than one card or device on this surface atone time, the Reader/Writer will not operate properly.• When you put the Smart card or device on the Reader/Writer, if aportion of the card or of the device extends off the read/write surface,or if  the card or device is tilted, the Reader/ Writer may not operateproperly.• The timing for placing the Smart Card or device is defined by theservice you use. For details, visit www.my.sony.com/smartcard.NoteIf you connect a USB hub between the Reader/Writer and thecomputer, the Reader/Writer may not be recognized properly.4Confirm the Reliability of the Operation Usingthe Self-Diagnosis Function.1Put your Smart Card or your device using FeliCa chiptechnology on the Reader/Writer (For details, see “Using theReader/Writer” on the next column).2Click the Windows Start button, point to [Programs] (if youuse Windows XP, [All programs]), point to [Sony FeliCaReader Writer], and then click [Self-diagnosis of ReaderWriter].3Carry out the self-diagnosis test according to the instructionsshown on the display.<Tip>The self-diagnosis program can be used even if you do not putthe Smart Card or device on the Reader/Writer. However, in thiscase, the program checks only the operation of the Reader/Writer itself.
