Notes on using your camera
Types of “Memory Stick” that can be
used (not supplied)
The IC recording medium used by this
camera is a “Memory Stick Duo”.
“Memory Stick Duo”: you can use a
“Memory Stick Duo” with your camera.
“Memory Stick”: you cannot use a
“Memory Stick” with your camera.
• Do not attach a label or the like on a “Memory
Stick Duo” or a Memory Stick Duo Adaptor.
Other memory cards cannot be used.
• For details on “Memory Stick Duo”, see
page 77.
When using a “Memory Stick Duo” with
“Memory Stick” compatible equipment
You can use the “Memory Stick Duo” by
inserting it into the Memory Stick Duo
Adaptor (not supplied).

Notes on the battery
• Charge the built-in battery before using the
camera for the first time.
• The battery can be charged even if it is not
completely discharged. Also, even if the battery
is not fully charged, you can use the partially
charged capacity of the battery as is.
• If you do not intend to use the camera for a long
time, use up the existing charge and store the
camera in a cool, dry place. This is to maintain
the battery functions.
• For details on the battery, see page 79.
No compensation for contents of the
recording
• The contents of the recording cannot be
compensated for if recording or playback is not
possible due to a malfunction of your camera or
recording media, etc.
Internal memory and “Memory Stick
Duo” back up
• Do not turn off the camera or remove “Memory
Stick Duo” while the access lamp is lighted, as
the internal memory data or “Memory Stick
Duo” data may be destroyed. Always protect
your data by making a back up copy.
About changing the language setting
• The on-screen displays in each local language
are used for illustrating the operating
procedures. Change the screen language before
using your camera if necessary (page 19).
Notes on recording/playback
• This camera is neither dust-proof, nor splash-
proof, nor water-proof.
• Before you record one-time events, make a trial
recording to make sure that the camera is
working correctly.
• Be careful not to get the camera wet. Water
entering the inside of the camera may cause
malfunctions which in some cases may not be
repairable.
• Do not aim the camera at the sun or other bright
light. This may cause irrecoverable damage to
your eyes. Or it may cause the malfunction of
your camera.
• Do not use the camera near a location that
generates strong radio waves or emits radiation.
The camera may not be able to record or play
back properly.
• Using the camera in sandy or dusty locations
may cause malfunctions.
• If moisture condensation occurs, remove it
before using the camera.
• Do not shake or strike the camera. In addition to
malfunctions and an inability to record images,
this may render the recording medium unusable,
or cause image data breakdown, damage or loss.

Notes on using your camera
• Clean the flash surface before use. The heat of
flash emission may cause dirt on the flash
surface to become discolored or to stick to the
flash surface, resulting in insufficient light
emission.
• When connecting your camera to another device
with a cable, be sure to insert the connector plug
in the correct way. Pushing the plug forcibly
into the terminal will damage the terminal and
may result in a malfunction of your camera.
• Movies other than those shot, edited or
composed on this camera cannot be played
back.
Notes on the LCD screen and the lens
• The LCD screen is manufactured using
extremely high-precision technology so over
99.99% of the pixels are operational for
effective use. However, there may be some tiny
black points and/or bright points (white, red,
blue or green in color) that constantly appear on
the LCD screen or the LCD finder. These points
are normal in the manufacturing process and do
not affect the recording in any way.
• Exposing the LCD screen or the lens to direct
sunlight for long periods may cause
malfunctions. Be careful when placing the
camera near a window or outdoors.
• Do not press against the LCD screen. The screen
may be discolored and that may cause a
malfunction.
• Images may trail across on the LCD screen in a
cold location. This is not a malfunction.
Note on disposal/transfer
• When using software embedded in the camera,
personal information such as IDs and mail
addresses may be saved on the internal memory
of the camera. When transferring the camera to
others or on disposal, do so after deleting the
information input.
On image data compatibility
• This camera conforms with DCF (Design rule
for Camera File system) universal standard
established by JEITA (Japan Electronics and
Information Technology Industries
Association).
• Playback of images recorded with your camera
on other equipment and playback of images
recorded or edited with other equipment on your
camera are not guaranteed.
Warning on copyright
• Television programs, films, videotapes, and
other materials may be copyrighted.
Unauthorized recording of such materials may
be contrary to the provisions of the copyright
laws.

• The photographs used as examples of pictures in
this Handbook are reproduced images, and are
not actual images shot using this camera.
• Design and specifications of recording media
and other accessories are subject to change

Getting started
1 Charging the built-in battery
•The battery is built in within the camera.
1Remove the insulation sheet.
2Connect the AC Adaptor to the DC IN jack of the camera, making sure the
power is off.
3Plug the power (mains lead) cord to a wall outlet (wall socket).
• The /CHG lamp lights on, and charging starts.
When the /CHG lamp turns off, charging is finished (Practical charge).
If you continue charging the battery for about one more hour (until it is fully charged), the charge will
last slightly longer.

1 Charging the built-in battery
Charging time
• Time required to charge a fully depleted battery at a temperature of 25°C (77°F). Charging may take
longer under certain circumstances or conditions.
• See page 22 for the number of images that can be recorded.
• Connect the AC Adaptor to an easily accessible wall outlet (wall socket) close by.
• Even if the /CHG lamp is not lit, the AC Adaptor is not disconnected from the AC power source (mains)
as long as it is connected to the wall outlet (wall socket). If some trouble occurs while using the AC
Adaptor, immediately shut off the power by disconnecting the plug from the wall outlet (wall socket).
• When charging is finished, disconnect the power cord (mains lead) from the wall outlet (wall socket).
To check the remaining battery time
Press POWER button to turn on and check the remaining battery on the LCD screen.
• It takes about one minute until the correct battery remaining indicator appears.
• The displayed battery remaining indicator may not be correct under certain circumstances.
• The Clock Set screen appears when the camera is turned on for the first time (page 18).

1Open the “Memory Stick Duo” cover.
2Insert the “Memory Stick Duo” (not supplied) all the way in until it clicks.
3Close the “Memory Stick Duo” cover.
When there is no “Memory Stick Duo” inserted
The camera records/plays back images using the internal memory (approx. 4 MB).
To remove “Memory Stick Duo”
Open the “Memory Stick Duo” cover.
• Never remove “Memory Stick Duo” when the access lamp is lit. This may cause damage to data in the
“Memory Stick Duo”.
Insert the “Memory Stick Duo” all the way in
as shown in the illustration until it clicks.

Make sure that the access lamp
is not lit, then push the “Memory

3 Turning the camera on/setting the clock
1Open the LCD panel to turn the power on.
• Open and lift the LCD panel up to a 90 degrees angle from the camera (1), then rotate it to the
desired angle (2).
• You can also turn the power on by pressing POWER button.
2Set the clock with the Multi-selector.
1Select the date display format with v/V.
2Select each item with b/B and set the numeric value with v/V.
3Select [OK].
To turn the power off
Press POWER button.
To change the date and time
Press MENU, and select [Clock Set] in (Setup 2) (page 63).
Tilt the Multi-selector side to side and up and down to
select, and press the center to set the setting.

When you turn on the power
If the camera is running on battery power and you do not operate the camera for about three
minutes, the camera turns off automatically to prevent wearing down the battery (Auto power-
off function).
Changing the language settings
You can change the on-screen displays to show messages in a specified language. To select the
screen language, press MENU, and select [ Language] in (Setup 1) (page 59).

1Press MODE to set the camera to recording mode.
• (Rec mode) lamp lights up.
2Press (Image Size) button.
3Select (Photo Size) or (Movie Size) with b/B on the Multi-selector,
then select the desired image size with v/V.
• Recommended use and number of remaining shots are displayed on the upper part of the LCD screen.
4Press (Image Size) to complete the setting.

Selecting the image size according to use
The default settings are marked with .
* The darker the subject, the lower the frame per second.
• The larger the image size, the higher the image quality.
• The more frames per second you played back, the smoother playback can be.
• “fps” indicates the number of frames per second (Frame Per Second). The actual number of image
recordable may differ depending on the shooting situations and the subject.
* Images are recorded in 3:2 aspect ratio, same as photograph printing paper or postcards, etc.
Selecting the image quality (compression ratio) in combination (page 41)
You can select the compression ratio when digital images are saved. When you select a high compression
ratio, the image lacks the fineness of detail, but has a smaller file size.

The length of time for movies and the number of still images may vary depending on the
shooting conditions.
The approximate recording time of movies
(Units: hour : minute : second)
• The shooting mode will automatically stop in either of the following situations.
– When the file size of the movie being recorded exceeds 2 GB.
– After the maximum shooting duration time* for each file has passed.
* NSC-GC1: 2 hours, NSC-GC3: 29 minutes
The approximate number of still images
(Units: Images)
• The number of images listed is for when [REC Mode] is set to [Normal].
• When the number of remaining shootable images is greater than 9,999, the “>9999” indicator appears.
• When images recorded using earlier Sony models are played back on this camera, the display may differ
from the actual image size.
• The image quality is [Fine] on the upper row and [Standard] on the lower row (page 41).

Selecting the image size according to use
• All numbers measured when using a “Memory Stick Duo” made by Sony Corporation. The number of still
images and the length of time for movies may vary depending on the shooting conditions and the
recording mediums.
• When measuring media capacity, 1 GB equals 1 billion bytes, a portion of which is used for data
management.

1Open the LCD panel to turn the power on.
• You can also turn the power on by pressing POWER.
2Make sure the (Rec mode) lamp lights up.
3Confirm the composition.
4Start shooting.
• When shooting movies, the angle of view will change from when shooting still images.
When shooting movies:
Press MOVIE.
To stop recording, press MOVIE again.
When shooting still images:

Shooting images
• The shooting mode will automatically stop in either of the following situations.
– When the file size of the movie being recorded exceeds 2 GB.
– After the maximum shooting duration time* for each file has passed.
* NSC-GC1: 2 hours, NSC-GC3: 29 minutes
• When shooting movies, the anti-blur function will be set on.
Changing the screen display
Each time you press the (Screen display switch) button, the display changes as follows.
• By pressing (Screen display switch) button longer, you can increase the LCD backlight.
• If you view images in bright outside light, adjust the brightness of the LCD backlight up.
However, the battery power may decrease faster under such condition.
• The LCD screen will not display while the camera is connected to a TV.
• The histogram does not appear in the following situations:
While shooting
– When the menu is displayed.
– When recording movies
During playback
– When the menu is displayed.
– In index mode
– When you are using playback zoom.
– When you are rotating still images.
– During playback of movies
• A large difference in the histogram displayed when shooting and during playback may occur when:
– The flash strobes.
– The shutter speed is slow or fast.
• The histogram may not appear for images recorded using other cameras.

Press T to zoom, press W to undo the zoom.
• This camera is only capable of digital zoom.
Shooting a still image while shooting movies
When you press PHOTO while shooting movies, the same picture as the movie being shot will
be recorded as a still image. The size of the still image recorded will be the same as the size of
the movie.
Close-up mode
Slide the Focus range switch to (Close-up) when shooting a subject close-up.
: Normal shooting (Approx. 1.0 m or farther (3 feet 3 3/8 inches or farther))
: Close-up shooting (Approx. 60 cm to 1.0 m (1 feet 11 5/8 inches to 3 feet 3 3/8 inches))
• The in-focus range becomes narrow, and the complete subject may not entirely be in focus.
Flash (Selecting a flash mode for still images)
Press button repeatedly until the desired icon is displayed on the LCD screen.
(No indicator): Flash Auto
Strobes when there is insufficient light or backlight (default setting).
: Flash forced on
: Slow synchro (Flash forced on)
The shutter speed is slow in a dark place to clearly shoot the background that is out of flash light.
: Flash forced off
• The flash strobes twice. The first time is to adjust the light quantity.
• While charging the flash, /CHG lamp lights on and is displayed.

If you press PHOTO, countdown timer is displayed, and after rapid beep sounds are heard, the
camera will shoot.
To cancel, press again.

1Open the LCD panel to turn the power on.
• You can also turn the power on by pressing POWER.
2Press MODE to set the camera to playback mode.
• (Play mode) lamp lights up.
3Plays back movies or still images.
Movie:
Press the Multi-selector to playback a movie. (Press it again to stop playback.)
Press B to fast forward, b to rewind. (Press the Multi-selector to return to normal playback.)
Press V to display the volume control screen, then adjust the volume with v/V.
• Movies with the image size [320(30fps)] or [320(15fps)] are displayed a size smaller.
Still image:
• Select an image with b/B on the Multi-selector.
/ To view an enlarged image (playback zoom)
Press while displaying a still image.
To undo the zoom, press .
Adjust the position: v/V/b/B
Cancel playback zoom: Press the Multi-selector.

Viewing an index screen
Press (Index) to display the index screen while a still image is displayed.
Select an image with v/V/b/B on the Multi-selector.
To return to the single image screen, press the Multi-selector.
To display the next (previous) index screen, move the yellow frame up/down/left/right with v/
V/b/B.

Deleting images
To delete images in index mode
1While an index screen is displayed, press (Delete) and select [Select] with b/B on the
Multi-selector.
2Select the images you want to delete with v/V/b/B, then press the Multi-selector to display the
(Delete) indicator on the selected image.
3Press (Delete).
4Select [OK] with B.
• To delete all the images in the folder, select [All In This Folder] with b/B in step 1 instead of [Select].
To cancel a selection
Select an image you have previously selected for deletion, then press the Multi-selector to
delete the indicator from the image.

1Press MODE to set the camera to playback mode.

2Select images to upload on a website and press (Sharemark) button.
Selecting images in Single Image mode:
Select [ mark] with v/V on the Multi-selector.
• To cancel, select [Exit].
• Move on to the previous image or the next image with b/B.
Selecting images in Index Display mode:
Select how to mark [ mark] either from [All In This Folder] or [Select].
When selecting [All In This Folder]:
will be marked on all of the images within the selected file.

Select images to upload on a website (Sharemark)
Removing Sharemarks
To remove the Sharemark from an image, select the image to remove the Sharemark and take
the same steps as when marking a Sharemark on an image.
• By using the software “PMB Portable” embedded in the camera, you can easily upload images marked
with Sharemarks. For details, see Help in the “PMB Portable”.
• When connecting to the network service, the page will be redirected by the server of Sony to the URL
entered in the network service setting.
• When uploading images via Internet, including this product, note that depending on the Internet service
provider, the cache may remain within the computer used.

• Different items will become visible depending on the selected mode.

• In REC mode, / is indicated. You cannot set an item with / indicator in gray.

Functions you can use in Scene Selection
For shooting an image appropriately according to the scene condition, a combination of
functions is determined by the camera. Some functions are not available, depending on the
Scene Selection mode.

• The compensation value can be set in 1/3EV increments.
• If a subject is being shot in extremely bright or dark conditions, or the flash is used, the exposure
adjustment may not be effective.
zAdjusting EV (Exposure Value) by displaying a histogram
A histogram is a graph showing the brightness of
an image. Press (Screen display switch)
repeatedly to display the histogram inside the
screen. The graph display indicates a bright
image when skewed to the right side, and a dark
image when skewed to the left side. When
shooting still images, adjust EV while checking
the exposure with the histogram.

Adjusts the color tones according to the lighting condition in a situation, for example, when
the colors of an image look strange.
White Bal: Adjusting the color tones
(Flash) Adjusts for the flash conditions.
• You cannot select this item when shooting movies.
n (Incandescent) Adjusts for places under incandescent lamp, or under bright
lighting, such as in a photo studio.
(Fluorescent) Adjust for fluorescent lighting.
(Cloudy) Adjusts for a cloudy sky or a shady location.
(Daylight) Adjusts for conditions outside under a clear sky, at sundown,
night scenes, the presence of neon signs or fireworks.

• Under fluorescent lights that flicker, the white balance function may not work correctly even though you
select [Fluorescent].
• Except in [Flash] modes, [White Bal] is set to [Auto] when the flash strobes.
• Some options are not available depending on the Scene Selection mode (page 38).
Selects a luminous sensitivity with units of ISO. The larger the number, the higher the
sensitivity.
• Note that the image tends to become noisier as the ISO sensitivity number increases.
• [ISO] is set to [Auto] in the Scene Selection mode.
• When shooting under brighter conditions, the camera automatically increases its tone reproduction and
helps prevent images to become whitish (excluding when [ISO] is set to [100]).
Selects the still image quality.
Auto Adjusts the White Balance automatically.
ISO: Selecting a luminous sensitivity

Selects whether the camera performs continuous shooting or not when you press PHOTO.
On the Exposure Bracket
• The focus and white balance are adjusted for the first image, and these settings are also used for the other
images.
• When the exposure is manually adjusted (page 39), the exposure is shifted based on the adjusted
brightness.
• The recording interval is approximately 1.2 second.
• If the subject is too bright or too dark, you may be unable to shoot properly with the selected bracket step
value.
• You may not be able to shoot images in the Exposure Bracket mode depending on the Scene Selection
mode (page 38).
On the Burst
• When recording with the self timer, a series of a maximum of 3 images is recorded.
• The recording interval is approximately 1.2 second. The recording interval becomes longer, depending on
the setting for the image size.
• When the battery level is low, or when the internal memory or “Memory Stick Duo” is full, the Burst
stops.
• You may not be able to shoot images in the Burst mode depending on the Scene Selection mode (page 38).
REC Mode: Selecting the continuous shooting method
(ExpBrktg) Records a series of three images with the exposure values
automatically shifted (Exposure Bracket).
• You can select the image with the appropriate exposure after
recording when you are unable to shoot good pictures depending
on the brightness of the subject.
• When [Camera] is set to [Auto], the Exposure Bracket mode is
not available.
• The flash is set to (Flash forced off).
(Burst) Records maximum 3 images in succession when you press
and hold down PHOTO.
• When “Recording” disappears, you can shoot the next image.
• The flash is set to (Flash forced off).
Normal Does not shoot continuously.

Adjusts the amount of flash light.
• The flash level can be set in 1/3 EV increments.
• The value is not displayed on the screen. It is indicated as + or –.
• To change flash mode, see page 26.
• If the subject is too bright or dark, this adjustment may have no effect.
• [Flash Level] cannot be set when flash mode is set to (Flash forced off).
Adjusts the saturation of the image.

The camera stores images in a specified folder of a “Memory Stick Duo”. You can change the folder or
create a new one.

• When multiple folders are created in the “Memory Stick Duo” and the first or last image in the folder is
displayed, the following indicators appear.

To cancel protection of all images in the folder
Select [All In This Folder] in step 4 of “To protect images in index mode”, and press the
Multi-selector. Select [Off] with B.
• Note that formatting the “Memory Stick Duo” erases all data stored on the recording media, even if
images are protected, and these images cannot be recovered.
• It may take some time to protect an image.
Adds (Print order) mark to images you want to print. By using the “Memory Stick Duo”,
images with DPOF marks can be printed at photo shops or with printers which supports the
DPOF standard.
• You cannot mark movies.
Marking in single-image mode
1Press MODE to set the playback mode.
2Select the image you want to print.
3Press MENU to display the menu.
4Select [DPOF] with v/V on the Multi-selector.
(Print order) mark is attached to the image.
5To mark other images, display the desired image with b/B, then press the Multi-selector.
Marking in index mode

Even if you do not have a computer, you can print images shot using your camera by
connecting the camera directly to a PictBridge compliant printer.

Prints all the images with a (Print order) mark (page 46) regardless of the displayed

Selects images and prints all the selected images.
Select the image you want to print with b/B, and then select [Print] with V.

Prints a displayed image.

Select [On] to print as an index image.

Select the size of the printing sheet.

The image is printed.

Stage 4: Completing the printing
Make sure the screen has returned to Stage 2, and disconnect the USB cable from the camera.
To print images on the index screen
1When the index screen is displayed, press MENU to display the menu items and select
(print).
2Select how to print.

To pause the slide show
Press the Multi-selector.

• You cannot resize movies.
• When you change from a small size to a large size, the image quality deteriorates.
• You cannot resize to an image size of 3:2.
• When you resize a 3:2 image, the upper and lower black portions will be displayed on the image.
Rotates a still image.

• You cannot rotate protected images or movies.
• You may not be able to rotate images shot with other cameras.
• When viewing images on a computer, the image rotation information may not be reflected depending on
the software.
Cuts movies, or deletes unnecessary scenes of movies. This is a recommended function to use
when the internal memory or “Memory Stick Duo” capacity is insufficient, or when you attach
movies to your e-mail messages.
• Note that the original movie is deleted and that number is skipped. Also note that you cannot restore files
once you cut them.

• If you want to change the cutting point, press the Multi-selector. The playback of the movie starts
again.

folder.
• You cannot cut the following kinds of images.

Using Setup items
You can change the default settings using the Setup screen.
1Turn on the power and set the mode with MODE.
2Press MENU to display the menu.
3Press B on the Multi-selector to select (Setup).
4Press v/V/b/B to select the item you want to set.
The frame of the selected item turns yellow.
5Press the Multi-selector to enter the setting.
To turn off the Setup screen, press MENU.
To return to the menu from the Setup screen, press b on the Multi-selector repeatedly.
To cancel the setting change
Select [Cancel] if it appears. If it does not appear, select the previous setting again.
• This setting is maintained even when the power is turned off.

Customizing the settings
Camera
The default settings are marked with .
When you operate the camera, the description of functions is displayed.
The flash strobes two or more times before
shooting to reduce the red-eye phenomenon when
using the flash.
• Because it takes about a second until the shutter clicks, hold the camera firmly to prevent the effects of
vibration. Also, do not let the subject move.
• Red-eye reduction may not produce the desired effects depending on individual differences, the distance
to the subject, if the subject does not see the pre-strobe, or other conditions.
Displays the recorded image on the screen for approximately two seconds immediately after
shooting a still image.

Memory Stick Tool
This item appears only when a “Memory Stick Duo” is inserted in the camera.
Formats the “Memory Stick Duo”. A commercially available “Memory Stick Duo” is already
formatted, and can be used immediately.
• Note that formatting irrevocably erases all data on a “Memory Stick Duo”, including even protected
images.
1Select [Format] with v/V/b/B on the Multi-selector.
The message “All data in Memory Stick will be erased” appears.
2Select [OK] with v.
The format is completed.
To cancel the formatting
Select [Cancel] in step 2.
Creates a folder in a “Memory Stick Duo” for recording images.
1Select [Create REC. Folder] with v/V/b/B on the Multi-selector.
The folder creation screen appears.

A new folder is created with a number incremented one higher than the largest number, and the
folder becomes the current recording folder.
To cancel the folder creation

• When not creating a new folder, the “101MNV01” folder is selected as the movie folder, and
“101MSDCF” folder is selected as the still image folder.
• You can create folders designated up to “999MSDCF”.
• Images are recorded in the newly created folder until a different folder is created or selected.
• You cannot delete a folder with the camera. To delete a folder, use your computer, etc.
• Up to 4,000 images can be stored in one folder. When the folder capacity is exceeded, a new folder is
automatically created.

1Select [Change REC. Folder] with v/V/b/B on the Multi-selector.

To cancel changing the recording folder
Select [Cancel] in step 2.
• You cannot select the “100MSDCF” folder as a recording folder.
• You cannot move recorded images to a different folder.
Copies all images in the internal memory to a “Memory Stick Duo”.

• Charge the battery sufficiently. Copying image files when the remaining battery amount is low can cause
data transfer failure or damage the data due to battery exhaustion.
• You cannot copy individual images.
• The original images in the internal memory are retained even after copying. To delete the contents of the
internal memory, remove the “Memory Stick Duo” after copying, then execute the [Format] command in

You can view images on a TV screen by connecting the camera to a TV.
The connection varies according to the type of TV the camera is connected to.
Turn off both your camera and the TV before connecting the camera and the TV.

• If your TV has stereo input jacks, connect the audio plug (white) of the A/V connecting cable to the left
audio jack.
2Turn on the TV and set the TV/video input switch to “video”.

If you experience trouble with your camera, try the following solutions.
When repairing the camera, we may check a minimum amount of data stored on the internal
memory in order to improve the condition. However, Sony dealer will neither copy nor save
your data.

2Turn the power off, and turn it on again after about one minute.
3Press the RESET button (page 9) using a fine-tipped object, and turn on the
power.
If you do the operation above, the date and time setting is cleared.

Cannot turn on the camera.
•Remove the insulation sheet.
•The battery is discharged. Charge the battery (page 15).
•The plug of the AC Adaptor has been disconnected from the wall outlet (wall socket).

The power turns off suddenly.
•If you do not operate the camera for about three minutes while the power is on, the camera
turns off automatically to prevent wearing down the battery. Turn on the camera again.
The battery remaining indicator is incorrect.
•This phenomenon occurs when you use the camera in an extremely hot or cold location.
•The displayed battery remaining differs from the current one. Fully discharge and then charge
the battery to correct the display.
•The battery is discharged. Charge the battery.
Your camera cannot record images.
•Check the free capacity of the internal memory or “Memory Stick Duo”. If it is full, do one of
the following:
–Delete unnecessary images (page 30).
–Change the “Memory Stick Duo”.
•The shooting mode will automatically stop in either of the following situations.
–When the file size of the movie being recorded exceeds 2 GB.
–After the maximum shooting duration time* for each file has passed.
* NSC-GC1: 2 hours, NSC-GC3: 29 minutes
•You are using the “Memory Stick Duo” with a write-protect switch, and the switch is set to
the LOCK position. Set the switch to the recording position (page 77).
•You cannot record images while charging the flash.
•Press MODE and set the camera to recording mode to shoot a movie or a still image.
The LCD screen does not display the movies or still images you are shooting.
•Your camera is set to the playback mode. Press MODE to change to the recording mode
(page 24).
Anti-blur function does not work.
•The anti-blur function does not work when shooting still images.
•The anti-blur function may not work properly when shooting night scenes.

•The NR slow shutter function is activated. This is not a malfunction.
The image is out of focus.
•The subject is too close. Shoot in (Close-up) recording mode. Make sure to position the

(1 feet 11 5/8 inches), when shooting (page 26).
The flash does not work.
•The flash is set to (Flash forced off) (page 26).
•You cannot use the flash when:
–[REC Mode] is set to [Burst] or [ExpBrktg] (page 42).
– (Twilight mode) or (Fireworks mode) is selected in the Scene Selection mode
(page 38).
–When shooting movies, or when shooting a still image while shooting movies
•Set the flash to (Flash forced on) when (Landscape mode), (Beach mode), or
(Snow mode) is selected in the Scene Selection mode (page 38).
Fuzzy white circular spots appear in images shot using the flash.
•Particles (dust, pollen, etc) in the air reflected the flash light and appeared in the image. This
is not a malfunction.
The date and time are not displayed on LCD screen.
•While shooting, the date and time are not displayed. They are displayed only during playback.
The recording date is not superimposed on an image.
•This camera does not have a feature for superimposing dates on images.
The screen is too dark or too bright.
•Adjust the brightness of the LCD backlight (page 59).
The image is too dark.
•You are shooting a subject with a light source behind the subject. Adjust the exposure
(page 39).

Vertical streaks appear when you are shooting a very bright subject.
•The smear phenomenon is occurring and white, black, red, purple, or other streaks appear on
the image. This phenomenon is not a malfunction.
Noise appears in the image when you view the screen in a dark place.
•The camera is attempting to increase the visibility of the screen by temporarily brightening
the image under conditions of low illumination. There is no effect on the recorded image.
The eyes of the subject come out red.
•Set [Red Eye Reduction] to [On] (page 55).
•Shoot the subject at a distance closer than the flash range using the flash.
•Light the room and shoot the subject.
Dots appear and remain on the screen.
•This is not a malfunction. These dots are not recorded (page 3).
Cannot shoot images in succession.
•The internal memory or “Memory Stick Duo” is full. Delete unnecessary images (page 30).
•The battery level is low.
Your camera cannot playback images.
•Press MODE to change to the playback mode (page 28).
•The folder/file name has been changed on your computer.
•When an image file has been processed by a computer or when the image file was recorded
using a model other than that of your camera, playback on your camera is not guaranteed.
•The camera is in USB mode. Delete the USB connection.
The date and time are not displayed.
• (Screen display switch) button is turned off (page 25).
The image appears rough right after playback starts.
•The image may appear rough right after playback starts due to image processing. This is not a
malfunction.
The image does not appear on the TV screen.
•Check [Video Out] to see if the video output signal of your camera is set to the color system of
your TV (page 62).
•Check whether the connection is correct (page 64).
•If the USB cable is connected to the USB terminal, disconnect it.

images (page 44), or use the “Memory Stick Duo” with the write-protect switch and set the
switch to the LOCK position (page 77) to prevent accidental erasure.
Cannot insert a “Memory Stick Duo”.
•Insert it in the correct direction.
Cannot format a “Memory Stick Duo”.
•You are using the “Memory Stick Duo” with the write-protect switch, and the switch is set to
the LOCK position. Set the switch to the recording position (page 77).
You have formatted a “Memory Stick Duo” by mistake.
•All the data on the “Memory Stick Duo” is deleted by formatting. You cannot restore it. We
recommend that you set the write-protect switch on the “Memory Stick Duo” to the LOCK
position to prevent accidental erasure (page 77).
The internal memory cannot be recognized as a removable disk when
connected by USB.
•Depending on the connected USB equipment, the internal memory of the camera cannot be
recognized as a removable disk. In [Copy] of [Memory Stick Tool], connect the camera after
copying the images of the internal memory to the “Memory Stick Duo” (page 57).

•Depending on your printer, the left, right, top, and bottom edges of the image may be cut off.
•When printing images using your own printer, cancel the trimming or borderless settings.
Consult the printer manufacturer as to whether the printer provides these functions or not.
•When having images printed at a digital print shop, ask the shop whether they can print the
images without cutting off both edges.
Cannot print images with the date.
•This camera does not have a feature for superimposing dates on images. However, because the
images shot with the camera include information on the recording date, you can print images
with the date superimposed if the printer or the software can recognize Exif information. For
compatibility with Exif information, consult the manufacturer of the printer or the software.
•When you print images at a shop, images can be printed with the date if you ask them to do so.
A connection cannot be established.
•The camera cannot be connected directly to a printer that is not compliant with the PictBridge
standard. Consult the printer manufacturer as to whether the printer is compliant with
PictBridge or not.
•Check that the printer is turned on and can be connected to the camera.
•Set [USB Connect] to [PictBridge] (page 60).
•Disconnect and connect the USB cable again. If an error message is indicated on the printer,
refer to the operating instructions supplied with the printer.

printer off and then on, then connect the USB cable again.
•Movies cannot be printed.
•Images shot using cameras other than this camera or images modified with a computer may
not be printed.
Printing is canceled.
•Confirm that you have disconnected the USB cable before the (PictBridge Connecting)
mark disappears.
Cannot insert the date or print images in the index mode.
•The printer does not provide these functions. Consult the printer manufacturer as to whether
the printer provides these functions or not.
•The date may not be inserted in the index mode depending on the printer. Consult the printer
manufacturer.
“---- -- --” is printed on the date-inserted part of the image.
•Images that do not have the recording data cannot be printed with the date inserted. Set [Date]
to [Off] and print the image again (page 47).

•Consult the printer manufacturer as to whether the printer can provide the desired size.

•Disconnect the USB cable and reconnect it whenever you change the paper size after the

IC recording medium with a large data
capacity.
You can use the following types of
“Memory Stick” listed below on this
camera. However, we do not guarantee the
operation of all types of “Memory Stick” on
your camera. (See the list below for more
details.)
*1The types of “Memory Stick Duo” that support
high speed data transfer. The speed of data
transfer varies depending on the device to be
used.
*2 Your camera does not support an 8-bit parallel
data transfer. A 4-bit parallel data transfer, as
same as “Memory Stick PRO Duo”, is
supported.
• Your camera cannot record or play data that uses
“MagicGate” technology. “MagicGate” is a
copyright protection technology that records and
transfers the contents in an encrypted format.
• Your camera is compatible with “Memory Stick
Micro” (“M2”). “M2” is the abbreviation for the
“Memory Stick Micro”.
• Still image format: Your camera compresses and
records image data in the JPEG (Joint
Photographic Experts Group) format. The file
extension is “.JPG”.
• A “Memory Stick Duo” formatted by a
computer (Windows OS/Mac OS) does not have
guaranteed compatibility with your camera.
• Data read/write speed may vary depending on
the combination of the “Memory Stick Duo”
and “Memory Stick Duo” compliant product
you use.
• You can prevent accidental erasure of images
when you slide the write-protect tab on the
“Memory Stick Duo” with a small tapered
object, to the write-protect position.
• Damaged or lost image data will not be
compensated for, and may occur in the
following cases:
– If you eject the “Memory Stick Duo” or turn
the power off on your camera while your
camera is reading or writing image files on the
“Memory Stick Duo” (while the access lamp
is lit or flashing).
– If you use the “Memory Stick Duo” near
magnets or magnetic fields.
• It is recommended you make a back-up of
important data on the hard disk of a computer.
• Be careful not to apply excessive force when
writing on a memo area on a “Memory Stick
Duo”.
• Do not attach a label or the like on a “Memory
Stick Duo” or a Memory Stick Duo adaptor.
• When you carry or store a “Memory Stick Duo”,
put it in its case.
• Do not touch, or allow metallic objects to come
into contact with the terminals.

into the Memory Stick Duo slot. If you insert a
“Memory Stick Micro” into this camera without
using a Duo-sized M2 Adaptor, you might not
be able to remove it from the camera.
• Do not leave the “Memory Stick Micro” within
the reach of small children. They might
accidentally swallow it.
On image data compatibility
• Image data files recorded on a “Memory Stick
Duo” by your camera conform to the “Design
rule for Camera File system” universal standard
established by the JEITA (Japan Electronics and
Information Technology Industries
Association).
• On your camera, you cannot play back still
images recorded on other devices that do not
conform to the universal standard. (These
models are not sold in some regions.)
• If you cannot use a “Memory Stick Duo” that
has been used with another device, format it
with your camera (page 56). Note that
formatting erases all information on the
“Memory Stick Duo”.
• You may not be able to play back images with
your camera:
– When playing back image data modified on
your computer.
– When playing back image data recorded with
other devices.

On the built-in battery
On charging the battery
We recommend charging the battery in an ambient
temperature of between 10°C to 30°C (50°F to
86°F). You may not be able to efficiently charge
the battery outside of this temperature range.
Effective use of the battery
• Battery performance decreases in low
temperature surroundings. So, the time that the
battery can be used is shorter in cold places. We
recommend the following to ensure longer
battery use:
– Put the camera in a pocket, etc. to warm it up
before using.
• The battery will run out quickly if you use the
flash or zoom frequently.
How to store the camera
• If the camera is not to be used for a long time, to
maintain its function, fully charge the internal
battery and use it up at least once a year, and
then store the camera in a dry, cool place.
• To use the battery up, leave your camera in slide
show (page 49) playback mode until the power
goes off.
On battery life
• The battery life is limited. Battery capacity
decreases little by little as you use it more and
more, and as time passes. If the battery
operating time seems shortened considerably, a
probable cause is that the battery has reached
the end of its life. Contact your Sony dealer or
local authorised Sony service facility.
• The battery life varies according to how it is
stored and the operating conditions and
environment.
