theIEEE802.1groupofnetworkingprotocols.Itprovidesanauthenticationmechanismtodeviceswishing
toattachtoaLANorWLAN.IEEE802.1XdefinestheencapsulationofEAPoverLANorEAPOL.802.1X
authenticationinvolvesthreeparties:asupplicant,anauthenticator,andanauthenticationserver.The
supplicantisaclientdevice(suchasalaptop)thatwishestoattachtotheLAN/WLAN‐thoughtheterm
'supplicant'isalsousedinterchangeablytorefertothesoftwarerunningontheclientthatprovides
credentialstotheauthenticator.Theauthenticatorisanetworkdevice,suchasanEthernetswitchor
wirelessaccesspoint;andtheauthenticationserveristypicallyahostrunningsoftwaresupportingthe

ThePoint‐to‐PointProtocoloverEthernet(PPPoE)isanetworkprotocolforencapsulatingPPPframesinside
Ethernetframes.IntegratedPPPprotocolimplementsauthentication,encryption,andcompression
functionsthattraditionalEthernetcannotprovideandcanalsobeusedinthecablemodemanddigital
subscriberline(DSL)andEthernetthatprovideaccessservicetotheusers.Essentially,itisaprotocolthat
allowstoestablishapoint‐to‐pointtunnelbetweentwoEthernetinterfaceswithinanEthernetbroadcast

thetraditionalrequirementforawiredbackbonetolinkthem.Allbasestationsinawirelessdistribution
systemmustbeconfiguredtousethesameradiochannel,methodofencryption(none,WEP,orWPA)and
