Howtochoosethetypeofsecurityforyourwirelessnetwork
Settingupwirelesssecurityisveryimportant.Leavingyourwirelessnetworkopenand
unsecurecouldexposeyourentirenetworkandpersonalfilestooutsiders.TRENDnet
recommendsreadingthroughthisentiresectionandsettingupwirelesssecurityonyour
newrouter.
Thereareafewdifferentwirelesssecuritytypessupportedinwirelessnetworkingeach
havingitsowncharacteristicswhichmaybemoresuitableforyourwirelessnetwork
takingintoconsiderationcompatibility,performance,aswellasthesecuritystrength
alongwithusingolderwirelessnetworkinghardware(alsocalledlegacyhardware).
Itisstronglyrecommendedtoenablewirelesssecuritytopreventunwantedusersfrom
accessingyournetworkandnetworkresources(personaldocuments,media,etc.).
Ingeneral,itisrecommendedthatyouchoosethesecuritytypewiththehighest
strengthandperformancesupportedbythewirelesscomputersanddevicesinyour
network.Pleasereviewthesecuritytypestodeterminewhichoneyoushouldusefor
yournetwork.
WirelessEncryptionTypes
WEP:Legacyencryptionmethodsupportedbyolder802.11b/ghardware.This
istheoldestandleastsecuretypeofwirelessencryption.Itisgenerallynot
recommendedtousethisencryptionstandard,howeverifyouhaveold802.11
bor802.11gwirelessadaptersorcomputerswitholdembeddedwireless
cards(wirelessclients),youmayhavetosetyourroutertoWEPtoallowtheold
adapterstoconnecttotherouter.Note:Thisencryptionstandardwilllimit
connectionspeedsto54Mbps.
WPA:ThisencryptionissignificantlymorerobustthantheWEPtechnology.
Muchoftheolder802.11ghardwarewasbeenupgraded(withfirmware/driver
upgrades)tosupportthisencryptionstandard.Totalwirelessspeedsunder
thisencryptiontypehoweverarelimitedto54Mbps.
WPA‐Auto:Thissettingprovidestherouterwiththeabilitytodetectwireless
devicesusingeitherWPAorWPA2encryption.Yourwirelessnetworkwill
automaticallychangetheencryptionsettingbasedonthefirstwirelessdevice
connected.Forexample,ifthefirstwirelessclientthatconnectstoyour
wirelessnetworkusesWPAencryptionyourwirelessnetworkwilluseWPA
encryption.Onlywhenallwirelessclientsdisconnecttothenetworkanda
wirelessclientwithWPA2encryptionconnectsyourwirelessnetworkwillthen
changetoWPA2encryption.NOTE:WPA2encryptionsupports802.11nspeeds
andWPAencryptionwilllimityourconnectionspeedsto54Mbps
WPA2:Thisisthemostsecurewirelessencryptionavailabletoday,similarto
WPAencryptionbutmorerobust.Thisencryptionstandardalsosupportsthe
highestconnectionspeeds.TRENDnetrecommendssettingyourroutertothis
encryptionstandard.Ifyoufindthatoneofyourwirelessnetworkdevicesdoes
notsupportWPA2encryption,thensetyourroutertoeitherWPAorWPA‐Auto

Ifaproductdoesnotoperateaswarrantedduringtheapplicablewarrantyperiod,
TRENDnetshallreservetheright,atitsexpense,torepairorreplacethedefective
productorpartanddeliveranequivalentproductorparttothecustomer.The
repair/replacementunit’swarrantycontinuesfromtheoriginaldateofpurchase.All
productsthatarereplacedbecomethepropertyofTRENDnet.Replacementproducts
maybeneworreconditioned.TRENDnetdoesnotissuerefundsorcredit.Please
