CREDIT-CARD DEFCON 3
The credit card Defcon 3 is based on the proven(?) software and hardware
design of the Defcon 3.
Because it is designed to be used as a luggage tag, the battery box is
exposed. A means of easy attachment to the luggage is also present.
Software and hardware have been added to initiate an alarm if an attempt to
tamper with either of these items is detected while the device is “armed".
, As in the Defcon 3, no ON/OFF switch is provided so several power—saving
features have been implemented:
Action/Mode ~ > Battery Life I
Take out the batteries Dah! Shelf Life
- >Byrs.
Batteries In/Cable Detached >1yr.
Batteries InjCable Attached ~80 days
Batteries In/Cable ~21 days
Attached/Armed
1. If the cable Is not attached, and batteries are inserted for the first time,
nothing happens from the user’s perspective.
2. When the cable is connected.
A. If the battery box 15 NOT secure, a high (3731Hz)/low (292Hz)
tone sequence is emitted and the left LED is flashed twice. The
program flow proceeds to 2C and the battery box screw should be
tightened.
B. If the battery box IS secure, the device“ comes alive”: tests the
battery condition (with a low-battery indication as appropriate
(single292i-lz beep/right LED flash) and emits 3 quick beeps
(3731Hz)/right LED flashes indicating proper operation. Program flow
_ . proceeds to 2G
' ‘C. If no RF remote code is “remembered” the device goes into “learn
mode’flwith the LED's flashing alternately (as in Defcon 3). Pressing
any button (or combination) will program the device with the code of
' he RF transmitter (right LED ON, left LED 6 flashes w/beeps
1865Hz)). As long as the cable is connected and the battery box is
secure, the device functions like the current Defcon 3.

In additionfito the standard functions of a Defcon 3, the following tamper—
resistance features have been added:
3. Armed;
A. Attempting to remove the battery box screw will set of the alarm.
B. Attempting to detach the cable (or cutting it) will activate the
alarm.
4. Disarmed;
A. If the battery box 15 NOT secure, attempting to arm/disarm will
produce the battery box warning of 2A and WILL NOT ARM.
B. Detaching the cable will put the device in “deep sleep” power
saving mode indicated by 3 beeps (1865Hz)/right LED flashes In
“deep sleep", the system WILL NOT respond to RF commands in any
way. Although the beeps/flashes are presented immediately upon
detaching the cable, “deep sleep" Is postponed for 30 seconds. During
this time interval, the system WILL respond to RF commands. This
should allow sufficient time for the user to activate “Panic” if a would-
be thief disconnects the cable with the system disarmed.
As in the Defcon 3, the alarm persists until the owner disarms the system
via the RF remote OR, if the alarm is due to motion sense ONLY, the alarm
shuts off after 30 seconds and the system is re— —armed awaiting further
motion.
Panic and Setup modes'are completely functional with a “remembered"
remote and cable 1N,jregardless of battery box securiw.
Sincerely,
William Eppler, Technical Director
