4 Gettingstarted
★Chargingyourbattery
Thebatteryusedinthephoneisrechargeable.Newbatterymustbefullychargedbefore
itisusedforthefirsttime.Onlyafterseveraltimesofcharginganddischargingcanthe
battery’sefficiencymadethebestof.
Toensurethebatteryinoptimalstate,werecommendyoudischargethebatteryfullyat
leastonceeverymonthbyconsumingthepoweruntilthephoneisswitchedoff
automatically.
Duringthecourseofcharging,itisnormaltofindthebatteryandthephoneslightly
heat‐up.Thephonewillautomaticallyprotectitselfwhenbatterytemperaturerisesso
astocontroltemperaturevariation.
Thehandsetwillgiveoffalertasthebatteryisrunningout.Whenthepowerhasrun
outthehandsetwillbeswitchedoffautomatically.
Note:Actualtimeofusageofthebatteryvariesaccordingtodifferentoperationmodes
andsettingsofnetworkbasestation.Ifyouusethephonewhenbatteryisratherlow,
thephonemayswitchoffautomatically.Pleaserechargeintime.
★Procedureforbatterycharging
Connectthechargertoamainsocket,andinsertthechargingplugintotheUSBofthe
phone.

Atthistimephonestartscharging.Thebatterysymbolwillbegraduallylengthened
fromrighttoleft.
Youmaychoosetochargethebatteryunderpower‐offorstandbystate.
Whenthebatteryisfullycharged,chargingoperationstopsautomatically.Thebattery
symbolonthescreenwillmaintainfull‐grid.Atthistimepleaseunplugthecharging
plug.

5 Basicoperations
★Switchingon
Pressingandholdingthe‘poweron/off’keyinthestandbystatemayswitchonthe
phone.Itwillautomaticallysearchthenetworkifthephonehasnopasswordprotection.
Yourphoneremainsinasearchingstateifitfailstofindtheavailablenetworksystem.
Ifapasswordforthephoneisrequiredafteritisswitchedon,pleaseinputthecorrect
one
★Switchingoff
Toswitchoffthephone,pleasepressandholdthe‘on/off’keyfor3secondsandmorein
thestandbystate.
Note:Ifyouswitchoffthephonedirectlybytakingoffthebattery,someinformationto
bestoredinthephonemaypossiblygetlost,whichmaycauseinconvenience.
★Makingacall
Understandbystate,inputnumberdirectlyviathekeypad.Thenpressthe‘Calling’key
tomakethecall.
★Adjustingthevolumeofearpiece
Duringaconversation,youmaypresstheupanddown‐directionkeytoadjustthe
volumeofearpiece.
★Answeringacall
Whenacallisincoming,thephonewillpromptyouaccordingtotheincomingcall
promptmodeyouhaveset.Toansweracall,pressthe‘Callcontrol’keytoanswerthe
calldirectlyoranykey(If‘AnyKeyAnswer’isseton)toanswer.Torejectacall,pressthe
‘on/off’keyandtheotherpartywillhearabusytone.

Underthestandbystate,pressthemiddleofthenavigationkeytoaccessthemain
menuofthephone.Underthemainmenuinterface,pressanykeytoaccessthe
corresponding‘Menuoptionlist’.
Themainmenuhavetotal12options,allmenusofthephonehavethefunctionoftext
promptforcorrespondingfunction.Eachsetofmenuisfurtherdividedintomulti‐item
sub‐menu.Menufunctionsmayletyouset,checkorchangethephone’svarious
functionalsettingstomeetyourpersonalrequirements.Pleaserefertothefollowing
‘Menuoptionlist’forselectionofthefunctionsyourequire.
Pressthedirectionkeystoselectfromthemenu.PressOKkeyorleftsoftkeytoconfirm
ortoenterthesub‐menulistoftheselectedmenu.Thenpressupanddown‐direction
keytoselectandpresstheleftsoftkeytoconfirmorenterintothelower‐levelmenu.
Pressthe“Back”keytoreturntohigher‐levelmenu.Pressthe‘on/off’keytoexitthe
menudirectlyandreturntothestandbyscreen.
Ineditingstate,the“Back”keyhasdeletingfunction.Pressitoncetodeleteone
characterandholdittodeletealltheinputcharacters.
Inoptions,‘On’or‘Activate’istoenablecorrespondingfunctionand‘Off’or‘Cancel’is
todisablecorrespondingfunction.

Amessageissenttothemessagescenterofthenetwork,thentothetargeteduserby
thenetwork.Ifthetargeteduser’sphoneisofforoutofnetworkarea,thenetworkwill
storethemessagetemporarily.
Whenthephonereceivesanewtextmessage,youwillbepromptedaccordingtosetting
andtheUnreadMessagesiconwillappearatthetopofthemainscreentoindicate
unreadtextmessage.

Missedcalls
Iftherearemissedcalls,youcanviewthedetailedinformationofthemissedcallsinthe
‘missedcalls’menu.Eachrecordcontainsthenumber(andthecontactnameifnumber
isalreadyinthephonebook),date,timeetc.Presstheupanddown‐navigationkeyto
viewtheinformationofothermissedcalls.Pressthe‘Callcontrol’keytodialthe
selectednumberandpresstherightsoftkeytoreturntohigher‐levelmenu.Missedcalls
aredividedintothefollowingtwosituations:
1.Ifthenumberisnotstoredinthephone,thephonenumberwillbe
displayedinthemissedcalllist.Selectthenumberandpresstheleft
soft/menukeytoaccessthesub‐menuofthismissedcall,whichhasthe
following5items:
Delete:Deletethismissedcallnumberrecord.

QCP.
Themusicplayerinterfaceiconsaresequentially:Previous,Pause,Play,Stop,andNext.
Youcanmovethecursorusingtheleftandrightkeypadandthenpressthe“OK”keyto
performanoperation.
Presstheleftkeypadtoentertooptions.Thefunctionsforthe“Options”providedareas
follows:
•AddToList:Newsongscanbeaddedfromthefilemanager.
•Play:Playthecurrentlyselectedsong.
•PlayList:Afterselectedaplaylist,themusicplayerinterfacewilldisplaythe

1.Dowirelessphonesposeahealthhazard?
Theavailablescientificevidencedoesnotshowthatanyhealthproblemsareassociated
withusingwirelessphones.Thereisnoproof,however,thatwirelessphonesare
absolutelysafe.Wirelessphonesemitlowlevelsofradiofrequencyenergy(RF)inthe
microwaverangewhilebeingused.TheyalsoemitverylowlevelsofRFwheninthe
stand‐bymode.WhereashighlevelsofRFcanproducehealtheffects(byheatingtissue),
exposuretolowlevelRFthatdoesnotproduceheatingeffectscausesnoknown
adversehealtheffects.ManystudiesoflowlevelRFexposureshavenotfoundany
biologicaleffects.Somestudieshavesuggestedthatsomebiologicaleffectsmayoccur,
butsuchfindingshavenotbeenconfirmedbyadditionalresearch.Insomecases,other
researchershavehaddifficultyinreproducingthosestudies,orindeterminingthe
reasonsforinconsistentresults.
2.WhatisFDA’sroleconcerningthesafetyofwirelessphones?
Underthelaw,FDAdoesnotreviewthesafetyofradiation‐emittingconsumerproducts
suchaswirelessphonesbeforetheycanbesold,asitdoeswithnewdrugsormedical
devices.However,theagencyhasauthoritytotakeactionifwirelessphonesareshown
toemitradiofrequencyenergy(RF)atalevelthatishazardoustotheuser.Insucha
case,FDAcouldrequirethemanufacturersofwirelessphonestonotifyusersofthe
healthhazardandtorepair,replaceorrecallthephonessothatthehazardnolonger
exists.AlthoughtheexistingscientificdatadonotjustifyFDAregulatoryactions,FDA
hasurgedthewirelessphoneindustrytotakeanumberofsteps,includingthe
following:
•SupportneededresearchintopossiblebiologicaleffectsofRFofthetype

emittedbywirelessphones;
•DesignwirelessphonesinawaythatminimizesanyRFexposureto
theuserthatisnotnecessary
fordevicefunction;and
•Cooperateinprovidingusersofwirelessphoneswiththebest
possibleinformationonpossibleeffectsofwirelessphoneuseon
humanhealth.
FDAbelongstoaninteragencyworkinggroupofthefederalagencies
thathaveresponsibilityfordifferentaspectsofRFsafetytoensure
coordinatedeffortsatthefederallevel.Thefollowingagenciesbelong

StatesmustcomplywithFCCsafetyguidelinesthatlimitRFexposure.FCCrelieson
FDAandotherhealthagenciesforsafetyquestionsaboutwirelessphones.FCCalso
regulatesthebasestationsthatthewirelessphonenetworksrelyupon.Whilethese
basestationsoperateathigherpowerthandothewirelessphonesthemselves,theRF
exposuresthatpeoplegetfromthesebasestationsaretypicallythousandsoftimes
lowerthanthosetheycangetfromwirelessphones.Basestationsarethusnotthe
subjectofthesafetyquestionsdiscussedinthisdocument.
3.Whatkindsofphonesarethesubjectofthisupdate?
Theterm“wirelessphone”refersheretohand‐heldwirelessphoneswithbuilt‐in
antennas,oftencalled“cell,”“mobile,”or“PCS”phones.Thesetypesofwireless
phonescanexposetheusertomeasurableradiofrequencyenergy(RF)becauseofthe
shortdistancebetweenthephoneandtheuser’shead.TheseRFexposuresarelimited
byFederalCommunicationsCommissionsafetyguidelinesthatweredevelopedwith
theadviceofFDAandotherfederalhealthandsafetyagencies.Whenthephoneis
locatedatgreaterdistancesfromtheuser,theexposuretoRFisdrasticallylower
becauseaperson’sRFexposuredecreasesrapidlywithincreasingdistancefromthe
source.Theso‐called“cordlessphones,”whichhaveabaseunitconnectedtothe
telephonewiringinahouse,typicallyoperateatfarlowerpowerlevels,andthus
produceRFexposuresfarbelowtheFCCsafetylimits.

4.Whataretheresultsoftheresearchdonealready?
Theresearchdonethusfarhasproducedconflictingresults,andmanystudieshave
sufferedfromflawsintheirresearchmethods.Animalexperimentsinvestigatingthe
effectsofradiofrequencyenergy(RF)exposurescharacteristicofwirelessphoneshave
yieldedconflictingresultsthatoftencannotberepeatedinotherlaboratories.Afew
animalstudies,however,havesuggestedthatlowlevelsofRFcouldacceleratethe
developmentofcancerinlaboratoryanimals.
However,manyofthestudiesthatshowedincreasedtumordevelopmentused
animalsthathadbeengeneticallyengineeredortreatedwithcancer‐causingchemicals
soastobepredisposedtodevelopcancerintheabsenceofRFexposure.Other
studiesexposedtheanimalstoRFforupto22hoursperday.Theseconditionsarenot
similartotheconditionsunderwhichpeopleusewirelessphones,sowedon’tknow
withcertaintywhattheresultsofsuchstudiesmeanforhumanhealth.Threelarge
epidemiologystudieshavebeenpublishedsinceDecember2000.Betweenthem,the
studiesinvestigatedanypossibleassociationbetweentheuseofwirelessphonesand
primarybraincancer,glioma,meningioma,oracousticneu‐roma,tumorsofthebrain
orsalivarygland,leukemia,orothercancers.Noneofthestudiesdemonstratedthe
existenceofanyharmfulhealtheffectsfromwirelessphoneRFexposures.However,
noneofthestudiescananswerquestionsaboutlong‐termexposures,sincethe
averageperiodofphoneuseinthesestudieswasaroundthreeyears.
5.WhatresearchisneededtodecidewhetherRFexposurefromwireless
phonesposesahealthrisk?
Acombinationoflaboratorystudiesandepidemiologicalstudiesofpeopleactuallyusing
wirelessphoneswouldprovidesomeofthedatathatareneeded.Lifetimeanimal
exposurestudiescouldbecompletedinafewyears.However,verylargenumbersof
animalswouldbeneededtoprovidereliableproofofacancerpromotingeffectifone
exists.Epidemiologicalstudiescanprovidedatathatisdirectlyapplicabletohuman
populations,but10ormoreyears’follow‐upmaybeneededtoprovideanswersabout
somehealtheffects,suchascancer.Thisisbecausetheintervalbetweenthetimeof
exposuretoacancer‐causingagentandthetimetumorsdevelop‐iftheydo‐maybe
many,manyyears.Theinterpretationofepidemiologicalstudiesishamperedby
difficultiesinmeasuringactualRFexposureduringday‐to‐dayuseofwirelessphones.
Manyfactorsaffectthismeasurement,suchastheangleatwhichthephoneisheld,or
whichmodelofphoneisused.
6.WhatisFDAdoingtofindoutmoreaboutthepossiblehealtheffectsof
wirelessphoneRF?
FDAisworkingwiththeU.S.NationalToxicologyProgramandwithgroupsof
investigatorsaroundtheworldtoensurethathighpriorityanimalstudiesareconducted
toaddressimportantquestionsabouttheeffectsofexposuretoradiofrequencyenergy
(RF).FDAhasbeenaleadingparticipantintheWorldHealthOrganizationInternational

ElectromagneticFields(EMF)Projectsinceitsinceptionin1996.Aninfluentialresultof
thisworkhasbeenthedevelopmentofadetailedagendaofresearchneedsthathas
driventheestablishmentofnewresearchprogramsaroundtheworld.TheProjecthas
alsohelpeddevelopaseriesofpublicinformationdocumentsonEMFissues.FDAand
theCellularTelecommunications&InternetAssociation(CTIA)haveaformal
CooperativeResearchandDevelopmentAgreement(CRADA)todoresearchonwireless
phonesafety.FDAprovidesthescientificoversight,obtaininginputfromexpertsin
government,industry,andacademicorganizations.CTIA‐fundedresearchisconducted
throughcontractstoindependentinvestigators.Theinitialresearchwillincludeboth
laboratorystudiesandstudiesofwirelessphoneusers.TheCRADAwillalsoincludea
broadassessmentofadditionalresearchneedsinthecontextofthelatestresearch
developmentsaroundtheworld.
7.HowcanIfindouthowmuchradiofrequencyenergyexposureIcanget
byusingmywirelessphone?
AllphonessoldintheUnitedStatesmustcomplywithFederalCommunications
Commission(FCC)guidelinesthatlimitradiofrequencyenergy(RF)exposures.FCC
establishedtheseguidelinesin
consultationwithFDAandtheotherfederalhealthandsafetyagencies.TheFCClimit
forRFexposurefromwirelesstelephonesissetataSpecificAbsorptionRate(SAR)of
1.6wattsperkilogram(1.6W/kg).TheFCClimitisconsistentwiththesafetystandards
developedbytheInstituteofElectricalandElectronicEngineering(IEEE)andthe
NationalCouncilonRadiationProtectionandMeasurement.Theexposurelimittakes

8.WhathasFDAdonetomeasuretheradiofrequencyenergycoming
fromwirelessphones?
TheInstituteofElectricalandElectronicEngineers(IEEE)isdevelopingatechnical
standardformeasuringtheradiofrequencyenergy(RF)exposurefromwirelessphones
andotherwirelesshandsetswiththeparticipationandleadershipofFDAscientistsand
engineers.Thestandard,“RecommendedPracticeforDeterminingtheSpatial‐Peak
SpecificAbsorptionRate(SAR)intheHumanBodyDuetoWirelessCommunications
Devices:ExperimentalTechniques,”setsforththefirstconsistenttestmethodologyfor
measuringtherateatwhichRFisdepositedintheheadsofwirelessphoneusers.The
testmethodusesatissue‐simulatingmodelofthehumanhead.StandardizedSARtest
methodologyisexpectedtogreatlyimprovetheconsistencyofmeasurementsmadeat
differentlaboratoriesonthesamephone.SARisthemeasurementoftheamountof

energyabsorbedintissue,eitherbythewholebodyorasmallpartofthebody.Itis
measuredinwatts/kg(ormilliwatts/g)ofmatter.Thismeasurementisusedto
determinewhetherawirelessphonecomplieswithsafetyguidelines.
9.WhatstepscanItaketoreducemyexposuretoradiofrequencyenergy
frommywirelessphone?
Ifthereisariskfromtheseproducts—andatthispointwedonotknowthatthereis—it
isprobablyverysmall.Butifyouareconcernedaboutavoidingevenpotentialrisks,you
cantakeafewsimplestepstominimizeyourexposuretoradiofrequencyenergy(RF).
Sincetimeisakeyfactorinhowmuchexposureapersonreceives,reducingtheamount
oftimespentusingawirelessphonewillreduceRFexposure.
•Ifyoumustconductextendedconversationsbywirelessphoneeveryday,youcould
placemoredistancebetweenyourbodyandthesourceoftheRF,sincetheexposure
leveldropsoffdramaticallywithdistance.
Forexample,youcoulduseaheadsetandcarrythewirelessphoneawayfromyour
bodyoruseawirelessphoneconnectedtoaremoteantenna.Again,thescientificdata
donotdemonstratethatwirelessphonesareharmful.Butifyouareconcernedabout
theRFexposurefromtheseproducts,youcanusemeasureslikethosedescribedabove
toreduceyourRFexposurefromwirelessphoneuse.
10.Whataboutchildrenusingwirelessphones?
Thescientificevidencedoesnotshowadangertousersofwirelessphones,including
childrenandteenagers.Ifyouwanttotakestepstolowerexposuretoradiofrequency
energy(RF),themeasuresdescribedabovewouldapplytochildrenandteenagersusing
wirelessphones.Reducingthetimeofwirelessphoneuseandincreasingthedistance
betweentheuserandtheRFsourcewillreduceRFexposure.Somegroupssponsored
byothernationalgovernmentshaveadvisedthatchildrenbediscouragedfromusing
wirelessphonesatall.Forexample,thegovernmentintheUnitedKingdomdistributed
leafletscontainingsucharecommendationinDecember2000.Theynotedthatno
evidenceexiststhatusingawirelessphonecausesbraintumorsorotherilleffects.Their
recommendationtolimitwirelessphoneusebychildrenwasstrictlyprecautionary;it
wasnotbasedonscientificevidencethatanyhealthhazardexists.
11.Whataboutwirelessphoneinterferencewithmedicalequipment?
Radiofrequencyenergy(RF)fromwirelessphonescaninteractwithsomeelectronic
devices.Forthisreason,FDAhelpeddevelopadetailedtestmethodtomeasure
electromagneticinterference(EMI)ofimplantedcardiacpacemakersanddefibrillators
fromwirelesstelephones.Thistestmethodisnowpartofastandardsponsoredbythe
AssociationfortheAdvancementofMedicalinstrumentation(AAMI).Thefinaldraft,a
jointeffortbyFDA,medicaldevicemanufacturers,andmanyothergroups,was

completedinlate2000.Thisstandardwillallowmanufacturerstoensurethatcardiac
pacemakersanddefibrillatorsaresafefromwirelessphoneEMI.FDAhastested
hearingaidsforinterferencefromhandheldwirelessphonesandhelpeddevelopa
voluntarystandardsponsoredbytheInstituteofElectricalandElectronicEngineers
(IEEE).Thisstandardspecifiestestmethodsandperformancerequirementsforhearing
aidsandwirelessphonessothatthatnointerferenceoccurswhenapersonusesa
“compatible”phoneanda“compatible”hearingaidatthesametime.Thisstandard
wasapprovedbytheIEEEin2000.FDAcontinuestomonitortheuseofwireless
phonesforpossibleinteractionswithothermedicaldevices.Shouldharmful
interferencebefoundtooccur,FDAwillconducttestingtoassesstheinterferenceand

forlongdurationsmayleadtopermanentnoise‐inducedhearingloss.Thisincludesthe
useofheadphones(includingheadsets,earbudsandBluetooth®orotherwireless
devices).Exposuretoveryloudsoundhasalsobeenassociatedinsomestudieswith
tinnitus(aringingintheear),hypersensitivitytosoundanddistortedhearing.Individual
susceptibilitytonoise‐inducedhearinglossandotherpotentialhearingproblemsvaries.
Theamountofsoundproducedbyaportableaudiodevicevariesdependingonthe
natureofthesound,thedevice,thedevicesettingsandtheheadphones.Youshould

7.812MONTHLIMITEDWARRANTY
PersonalCommunicationsDevices,LLC.(the“Company”)warrantstotheoriginalretail
purchaserofthishandheldportablecellulartelephone,thatshouldthisproductorany
partthereofduringnormalconsumerusageandconditions,beprovendefectivein
materialorworkmanshipthatresultsinproductfailurewithinthefirsttwelve(12)
monthperiodfromthedateofpurchase,suchdefect(s)willberepairedorreplaced
(withneworrebuiltparts)attheCompany’soption,withoutchargeforpartsorlabor
directlyrelatedtothedefect(s).
Theantenna,keypad,display,rechargeablebatteryandbatterycharger,ifincluded,are
similarly
warrantedfortwelve(12)monthsfromdateofpurchase.ThisWarrantyextendsonlyto
consumerswhopurchasetheproductintheUnitedStatesorCanadaanditisnot
transferableorassignable.
ThisWarrantydoesnotapplyto:
(a)Productsubjectedtoabnormaluseorconditions,accident,mishandling,neglect,

unauthorizedalteration,misuse,improperinstallationorrepairorimproperstorage;
(b)Productwhosemechanicalserialnumberorelectronicserialnumberhasbeen
removed,alteredordefaced.
(c)Damagefromexposuretomoisture,humidity,excessivetemperaturesor
extremeenvironmentalconditions;
(d)Damageresultingfromconnectionto,oruseofanyaccessoryorotherproduct
notapprovedorauthorizedbytheCompany;
(e)Defectsinappearance,cosmetic,decorativeorstructuralitemssuchasframing
andnon‐operativeparts;
(f)Productdamagedfromexternalcausessuchasfire,flooding,dirt,sand,weather
conditions,batteryleakage,blownfuse,theftorimproperusageofanyelectrical
source.
TheCompanydisclaimsliabilityforremovalorreinstallationoftheproduct,for
geographiccoverage,forinadequatesignalreceptionbytheantennaorfor
communicationsrangeoroperationofthecellularsystemasawhole.
WhensendingyourwirelessdevicetoPersonalCommunicationsDevicesforrepairor
service,pleasenotethatanypersonaldataorsoftwarestoredonthedevicemaybe
inadvertentlyerasedoraltered.Therefore,westronglyrecommendyoumakeabackup
copyofalldataandsoftwarecontainedonyourdevicebeforesubmittingitforrepairor
service.Thisincludesallcontactlists,downloads
(i.e.third‐partysoftwareapplications,ringtones,gamesandgraphics)andanyother
dataaddedtoyourdevice.Inaddition,ifyourwirelessdeviceutilizesaSIMor
Multimediacard,pleaseremovethecardbeforesubmittingthedeviceandstorefor
laterusewhenyourdeviceisreturned,PersonalCommunicationsDevicesisnot
responsibleforanddoesnotguaranteerestorationofanythird‐partysoftware,personal
informationormemorydatacontainedin,storedon,orintegratedwithanywireless
device,whetherunderwarrantyornot,returnedtoPersonalCommunicationsDevices
forrepairorservice.
ToobtainrepairsorreplacementwithinthetermsofthisWarranty,theproductshould
bedeliveredwithproofofWarrantycoverage(e.g.datedbillofsale),theconsumer’s
returnaddress,daytimephonenumberand/orfaxnumberandcompletedescriptionof
theproblem,transportationprepaid,totheCompanyattheaddressshownbeloworto
theplaceofpurchaseforrepairorreplacementprocessing.Inaddition,forreferenceto
anauthorizedWarrantystationinyourarea,youmaytelephoneintheUnitedStates
