INSTALL THE BATTERIESYour GMRS380 radio uses 4 AAA alkaline batteriesor the optional NiMH battery pack (not included). Ifalkaline batteries are used, we recommend usinghigh quality alkaline batteries.To install the 4 AAA alkaline batteries:1) Make sure your radio is OFF.2) Remove the battery compartment door by pressing the tab at the bottom of the compartment door allowing the door to beremoved.3) Install 4 AAA alkaline batteries (not included) intothe battery compartment. Be certain to follow the+ and - symbols in the compartment.Installingthe batteries incorrectly will prevent the unit fromoperating.4) Replace the battery compartment door.This unit has a battery level meter on the display to indicate the status of the batteries.When the batteries in the unit are low, the battery meter icon will flash and the unit will emit a low batterytone.Replace the alkaline batteries immediately or ifyou are using the NiMH battery pack, you mustrecharge the batteries in order to continue using the radio.Warning! Press and hold the select key again.b. Press PTT. (Push To Talk)c. Wait 10 seconds until the unit automaticallyreturns to "normal" mode.THANK YOUFOR PURCHASING A UNIDEN PRODUCTBATTERY LEVEL AND LOW BATTERY ALERTTalking on Your RadioTo talk to others using the radio:1) Press and hold the PTT button and speak in a clear, normal voice about 2-3 inches away from the microphone.While you aretransmitting, the TTXXicon will appear on thedisplay.To avoid cutting off the first part ofyour transmission, pause slightly after pressing the PTT button before you starttalking.2) When you are finished speaking, release thePTT button.You can now receive incomingcalls.While receiving, the RRXXicon will appearon the display.*Range may vary depending on environmental and/or topographical conditions.Voice Operated TransmissionYour GMRS380 radio is equipped with a userselectable Voice Operated Transmitter (VOX) thatcan be used for automatic voice transmissions.The VOX feature is designed to be used with aheadset with a microphone, but not a remote PTT switch.Transmission is initiated by speakinginto the remote microphone instead of pushing thePTT button.To select the VOX level:1) Enter the Menu.Advance through theMenu,until the VVOOXXicon appears on the display.The current level (00-33) willChannel Scan FeatureYour GMRS380 radio has a channel Scan feature that allows you to easily Scan all 15channels.When an active channel is detected,the unit will pause on that channel until thechannel is clear.Then after a 4 second delay,the unit will continue scanning.Pressing PTTwhile the Scan is paused on a channel willallow you to transmit on that channel.To turn ON channel scanning:Press and hold either the ▲or ▼key untilthe SSCCAANNicon is displayed.The channelnumber on the display will rapidly cyclethrough the channels.To turn OFF channel scanning:Press and release either the ▲or ▼key.• 8 GMRS / 7 FRS Channels• 38 CTCSS Codes• Up to 5 Mile Range*• Internal VOX Circuitry• 5 Selectable Call Tone Alerts• Backlit LCD Display• Optional Headset Accessories• Headset Jack• Battery Recharge Circuit• Optional NiMH Battery Packand Charger• Battery Level Meter• Channel Monitor• Channel Scan• Keypad Lock• VOX CircuitryGMRS380Turning the Radio On and Adjusting the Volume1) Rotate the on/off/volume control counterclockwise to turn the unit ON and increase the speaker volume.2) Rotate the on/off/volume control clockwise to decrease the speaker volume and turn the unit OFF.USING THE RADIOIn order to get the most out of your new radio, readthis reference guide completely before attempting tooperate the unit.Choosing a CTCSS CodeEach of the channels 1-15 may have any one ofthe codes 0-38 selected.Code "0" indicates noCTCSS code selected and your radio can receivea signal regardless of the code settings of thetransmitting radio.1) Enter the Menu.The CTCSS code on the LCDdisplay will flash.2) Press the ▲or ▼key to increase or decreasethe code number displayed.3) Exit the Menu to return to "normal" mode.Choosing a ChannelYour radio has 15 channels and 38 CTCSS codesyou can use to talk to others.In order to speak tosomeone, each of you must be set to the samechannel and CTCSS code.To choose a channel:With the radio in normal operating mode press the▲or ▼key to increase or decrease the channelnumber displayed.Keypad LockTo Lock the keypad, press and hold the lock key until the icon is displayed.To remove the keypadLock, press and hold the lock key until the Lock icondisappears.Transmitting a Call Alert ToneYour GMRS380 radio is equipped with 5selectable call tones that will be transmittedwhen the call key is pressed.To select a call tone:1) Enter the Menu.Advance through theMenu until the CCAALLLLicon is shown onthe display.The current call tone number(11-55) will be indicated.2) Press the ▲or ▼key to increase ordecrease the number to the desired calltone.Each tone will be heard through the speaker.3) Exit the Menu.To transmit the selected call alert tone, press the call key.The selected tone will automatically be transmitted for a fixed length of time.1 Antenna 15 Battery Level Meter2 Monitor Button 16 VOX Indicator3 PTT Button 17 Scan Indicator4 Up Key 18 Transmit Indicator5 Down Key 19 Channel Indicator6 Select Key 20 Lock Indicator7 Speaker 21 Call Alert8 On/Off/Volume Control 22 Receive Indicator9 Beltclip 23 CTCSS Code10Headset Jack11Keypad Lock Key12Call Key13Microphone14Battery CoverFCC GMRS LICENSEThe GMRS380 radio operates on the GeneralMobile Radio Service (GMRS) frequencies whichrequire a Federal Communication Commissionlicense to operate. If you have any questions you can contact the FCC direct at 1-888-225-5322.Auto Squelch FeatureThe GMRS380 radio is equipped with an automaticsquelch system which shuts off weak transmissionsand unwanted noise due to terrain conditions or if you have reached your range limit.To temporarily disable the Auto Squelch and monitorthe selected channel, press and hold the monitorbutton.When the monitor button is released, theAuto Squelch will be re-engaged. To persistently monitor the channel between transmissions, pressand hold the monitor button until the second confirmation beep is heard.Automatic Power Save FeatureYour GMRS380 radio has a unique circuit designed to dramatically extend the life of the batteries.If there isno transmission within 5 seconds, your radio switchesto the Power Save mode.The radio is still able toreceive transmissions in this mode.LCD BacklightThe LCD backlight will automatically turn on whenany key is pressed.The LCD display will illuminate for 5 seconds before turning OFF.be indicated.Level ‘0’ disables VOX, whilelevels 1-3 set the sensitivity of the VOX circuit.2) Press either the ▲or ▼key to the desiredVOX sensitivity level. Hearing experts advise against continuous high volume operation. If you experience a ringing in your ears, reduce the volume level ordiscontinue use.Always make sure the radio is turned off before plugging audio accessories into the accessory jack.Hazardous Environments: Do not operate the radio in hazardous environments. Explosion or fire may result.Do not operate the radio near unshielded electrical blasting caps. Under certain conditions, radios can interfere withblasting operations and may cause an explosion.Turn your radio OFF to prevent accidental transmission when in a blasting area or in areas posted: “Turn off two-way radio.” Construction crews often use remote control RFdevices to set off explosives.Care and Safety: To clean the radio, use a soft cloth dampened with water.Do not use cleaners or solvents because they can harm the body of the unit and leak inside, causing permanent damage.Use a dry, lint-free cloth toclean the battery contacts. Do not submerge the unit in water.If the unit gets wet, turn it off and remove the batteries immediately. Dry the battery compartment with a soft cloth to minimize potential water damage.Leave the battery compartment cover off overnight to ensure complete drying.
