It will help you assemble, prepare and maintain your rider. Please read and understand what it says. Before you start to prepare your tractor for its first use, please locate the model plate and copy the information from it in this Operator's Manual. The information on the model plate is very important if you need help from your dealer or the MTD customer support department. • Every tractor has a model plate. You can locate it by lifting the seat and looking at the seat bracket. • An example of what the model plate will look like is shown below. This is where your model number will be. As with any type of power equipment, carelessness or error on the part of the operator can result in serious injury. This lawn mower is capable of amputating hands and feet and throwing objects. Failure to observe the following safety instructions could result in serious injury or death. 1. GENERAL • OPERATION Read, understand, and follow all instructions in the operator's manual and on the machine before starting. Keep this manual in a safe place for future and regular reference and for ordering replacement parts. • • Only allow responsible individuals familiar with the instructions to operate the machine. Know controls and how to stop the machine quickly. • Stop engine and wait until blade(s) comes to a complete stop before (a) removing grass catcher or unclogging chute, or (b) making any repairs, adjusting or removing any grass or debris. • Mow only in daylight or good artificial light. • Do not operate the machine influence of alcohol or drugs. while • Watch for traffic when operating roadways. near or crossing • Use extra care when loading or unloading the machine into a trailer or truck. SLOPE OPERATION Slopes are a major factor related to loss of control and tipover accidents which can result in severe injury or death. All slopes require extra caution. If you cannot back up the slope or if you feel uneasy on it, do not mow it. For your safety, use the slope gauge included as part of this manual to measure slopes before operating this unit on a sloped or hilly area. If the slope is greater than 15 ° as shown on the slope gauge, do not operate this unit on that area or serious injury could result. • Before and when backing, for small children. • Never carry children, even with the blades off. Extinguish all cigarettes, sources of ignition. • Avoid starting or stopping on a slope. If tires lose traction, disengage the blade(s) and proceed slowly straight down the slope. DO NOT: • Do not turn on slopes unless necessary; then, turn slowly and gradually downhill, if possible. • Do not mow near drop-offs, ditches or embankments. The mower could suddenly turn over if a wheel is over the edge of a cliff or ditch, or if an edge caves in. • Do not mow on wet grass. A riding mower could overturn and cause serious injury. If operating a walk-behind mower on such a slope, it is extremely difficult to maintain your footing and you could slip, resulting in serious injury. (+). The negative battery terminal is marked Neg. (-). • The positive cable (heavy red wire) is secured to the positive battery terminal (+) with a hex bolt and hex nut at the factory. Make certain that the rubber boot covers the terminal to help protect it from corrosion. • Remove the hex bolt and wing nut from the negative cable. Attach the negative cable (heavy black wire) to the negative battery terminal (-) with the bolt and wing nut. GAS AND OIL FILL-UP Service the engine with gasoline and oil as instructed in the separate engine manual packed with your tractor. Read instructions carefully. IMPORTANT: Your tractor is shipped with oil; however, you MUST check the oil level before operating. Be careful not to overfill. Overfilling with oil may cause the engine to smoke. This will result in poor engine performance and could cause permanent engine damage. The gasoline tank is located under the hood and has a capacity of approximately two gallons. Do not overfill. • Place the hold-down strap in position over the I pbo_i_ievl _ to secuR:tb_erPlace. See Figure 2. WARNING: ,_ Gasoline produces noxious fumes. Never fill fuel tank indoors. Always fill the fuel tank in a well ventilated area to avoid inhalation of gasoline fumes. WARNING: Never smoke while fueling your tractor or fill the fuel tank while engine is running or while engine is hot. WARNING: Do not fill closer than 1/2 inch from the top of the fuel tank to prevent spills and to allow for fuel expansion. If gasoline is accidently spilled, move tractor away from area of spill. Avoid creating any source of ignition until gasoline vapors have disappeared. Refer to the MAINTENANCE section of this manual for more detailed instructions regarding proper battery charging procedure. INSTALLING THE MULCH KIT On units equipped with a 42-inch deck, the mulch kit is installed at the factory. To remove it, unfasten the wing knob found on the top of the cutting deck and carefully pull the mulch plug out from the discharge area of the deck. On units equipped with a 46-inch deck, the mulch kit is packaged separately within the crate. SECTION 7: CONTROLS D B M A C G J K L NOTE: Steering Wheel not shown for clarity. NOTE: Any reference in this manual to the RIGHT or LEFT side of the tractor is observed from operator's position. IGNITION SWITCH CHOKE To start the engine, insert key into the ignition switch and turn clockwise to the START position. Release key to the ON position once engine has fired. See Figure 4. Refer to STARTING THE ENGINE in the OPERATION section of this manual for detailed starting instructions. The ignition switch is also used to operate the headlights. Refer to OPERATING THE HEADLIGHTS in the OPERATION section of this manual for detailed instructions ,_ tractor when theRemove tractor is notkey in use WARNING: the fromtothe prevent accidental starting. CONTROL On some units, moving the throttle lever all the way forward activates the engine's choke control. On all other units, the choke control can be found on the left side of the dash panel and is activated by pulling the knob outward. Activating the choke control aids in starting the engine. Refer to STARTING THE ENGINE in the OPERATION section for detailed starting instructions. SYSTEMS INDICATOR MONITOR Your tractor is equipped with either an hour meter or an ammeter as part of two available systems indicator monitors. Locate the monitor on the left side of your tractor's dash panel and compare it to both shown in Figure 6. On Battery = _.J Start He°tUr_ _ Figure 4 \ Brake THROTTLE CONTROL The throttle lever is located on the right side of the tractor's dash panel. This lever controls the speed of the engine, and on some units the choke control also. When set in a given position, the throttle will maintain a uniform engine speed. See Figure 5. Figure 6 If the Brake light or PTO light illuminates when attempting to start the unit, proceed as follows: BRAKE -Depress the brake pedal PTO-Move PTO lever, or PTO knob into the disengaged (OFF) position. It is normal for the Oil light and the Battery light, if so equipped, to illuminate while the engine is cranking, but if either illuminate's while the engine is running, proceed as follows: OIL-Stop the tractor immediately and check the crankcase oil level as instructed in the engine manual. Add oil as required. BATTERY-- The battery is in need of a charge, or the engine's charging system is not generating sufficient amperage. Refer to the MAINTENANCE section of this manual for the proper battery charging procedure or have the charging system checked by an authorized engine dealer. The ammeter, on units so equipped, measures the the electrical output of the engine's charging system. Under normal operating conditions, with the engine at full throttle, the ammeter's needle should measure a positive charge. The hour meter, on units so equipped, operates whenever the ignition key is in the On or On/Lights position and records the actual hours of tractor operation. ELECTRIC (POWER BRAKE PTO TAKE-OFF) PEDAL KNOB k BRAKE _ To engage the power to the cutting deck or other attachments, pull outward on the PTO knob. Push the PTO knob inward to disengage the power to the attachments. II1 The brake pedal is located on the right front side of the tractor above the drive pedal along the running board. The brake pedal can be used for sudden stops or setting the parking brake. NOTE: The PTO knob must be in the disengaged (OFF) position when starting the engine, when shifting into reverse and if the operator leaves the seat. NOTE: The brake pedal must be fully depressed to PTO (POWER TAKE-OFF) activate the safety interlock switch when starting the tractor. LEVER @_ LIFT LEVER @_= , The PTO lever is located on the left side of the dashboard next to the steering wheel. Move the PTO lever forward to engage the power to the cutting deck or other attachments; move the PTO lever backward (toward the rear of the tractor) to disengage the power to the attachments. unnnnq The lift lever is used to change the operating position (height) of the cutting deck. To operate, move the lever to the left, then place in the notch best suited for your application. NOTE: The PTO lever must be in the disengaged (OFF) position when starting the engine, when shifting into reverse and if the operator leaves the seat. PARKING BRAKE BUTTON To set the parking brake, fully depress the brake pedal and push the parking brake button in. Hold the button in DRIVE PEDAL while taking your foot off the brake pedal. Both the parking button and the brake pedal wilt then stay depressed. To release the parking brake, depress the brake pedal slightly. The parking brake button will then return to its original position. NOTE: The parking brake must be set if the operator leaves the seat with the engine running or the engine will automatically shut off. The drive pedal is located below the brake pedal on the right front side of the tractor along the running board. Depress the drive pedal with your right foot when the tractor shift lever is in either forward or IMPORTANT: Always set the parking when leaving the tractor unattended. reverse to cause the tractor to move. Ground speed is also controlled with the drive pedal. The further down the pedal is depressed, the faster the tractor will travel. The pedal will return to its original position when it's not depressed. Push the cruise control button while traveling forward at a desired speed. While holding the button in, release pressure from the drive pedal. This will engage the cruise control and allow the tractor to shift Never Jl_ remain at that speed without applying pressure to the drive pedal. Depress the brake pedal or the drive pedal to deactivate cruise control. Refer to the OPERATION section of this manual for detailed instructions regarding the cruise control feature. CONTROL 8: OPERATION INTERLOCK SWITCHES This tractor is equipped with a safety interlock system for the protection of the operator. If the interlock system should ever malfunction, do not operate the tractor. Contact an authorized MTD Service Dealer in your area. The safety interlock system prevents the engine from cranking or starting unless the brake pedal is fully depressed, and the PTO lever, or PTO knob is in the disengaged (OFF) position. WARNING: Do NOT attempt to bypass or disconnect the tractor's safety interlock. Doing so could result in serious personal injury or death. IMPORTANT: Tampering with or attempting to bypass the tractors Safety Interlock Switches in any way WILL void your warranty. • The safety interlock system will automatically shut off the engine if the operator leaves the seat before engaging the brake lock. WARNING • The safety interlock system will automatically shut off the engine if the operator leaves the seat with the PTO lever, or PTO knob in the engaged (ON) position, regardless of whether the brake lock is engaged. The PTO lever, or PTO knob must be in the disengaged (OFF) position to restart the engine. • • • • • • • • • • • • On units equipped with an electric PTO, the safety interlock system wilt automatically shut off the PTO if the PTO knob is moved into the engaged (ON) position with the shift lever in the REVERSE position. • • On units equipped with a manual PTO, the safety interlock system wilt automatically shut off the tractor's engine if the PTO lever is moved into the engaged (ON) position with the shift lever in the REVERSE position. 11 AVOID SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH GO UP AND DOWN SLOPES, NOT ACROSS. AVOID SUDDEN TURNS. DO NOT OPERATE THE UNIT WHERE IT COULD SLIP OR TIR IF MACHINE STOPS GOING UPHILL, STOP BLADE(S) AND BACK DOWNHILL SLOWLY. DO NOT MOW WHEN CHILDREN OR OTHERS ARE AROUND. NEVER CARRY CHILDREN. LOOK DOWN AND BEHIND BEFORE AND WHILE BACKING. KEEP SAFETY DEVICES (GUARDS, SHIELDS, AND SWITCHES) IN PLACE AND WORKING. REMOVE OBJECTS THAT COULD BE THROWN BY THE BLADE(S). KNOW LOCATION AND FUNCTION OF ALL CONTROLS. BE SURE BLADE(S) AND ENGINE ARE STOPPED BEFORE PLACING HANDS OR FEET NEAR BLADE(S). BEFORE LEAVING OPERATOR'S POSITION, DISENGAGE BLADE(S), PLACE THE SHIFT LEVER IN NEUTRAL, ENGAGE BRAKE LOCK, SHUT ENGINE OFF AND REMOVE KEY. READ OPERATOR'S MANUAL SETTING THE CUTTING HEIGHT STOPPING THE ENGINE Select the height position of the cutting deck by placing the deck lift lever in any of the six different cutting height notches on the right side of the fender. Then adjust the deck wheels so that they are at least 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch above the ground when the tractor is on a smooth, flat surface such as a driveway. • Place the PTO lever, or PTO knob in the disengaged (OFF) position from the discharge the WARNING: Keep chute hands opening and feet ofaway cutting deck. • Remove the key from the ignition switch to prevent accidental starting. • Move the throttle control into the SLOW (turtle) position and allow the engine to "idle down" for ten seconds. NOTE: The deck wheels are an anti-scalp feature of the deck and are not designed to support the weight of the cutting deck. THE TRACTOR WARNING: • Insert the tractor key into the ignition switch. • Place the PTO lever, or PTO knob in the disengaged (OFF) position. 41A • Depress the brake pedal and set the parking brake. • Place the shift lever in the NEUTRAL position. Avoid sudden starts, excessive speed and sudden stops. Do not leave the seat of the tractor without first placing the PTO lever, or PTO knob in the disengaged (OFF) position, depressing the brake pedal and engaging the parking brake. If leaving the tractor unattended, also turn the ignition key off and remove the key. • Depress the brake pedal to release the parking brake and let the pedal up. Move the throttle lever into the FAST (rabbit) position. • Move the throttle control lever into the FAST (or CHOKE, if so equipped) position. • Pull out the choke control knob, if so equipped (a warm engine may not require choking). IMPORTANT: • Turn the ignition key clockwise to the START position. After the engine starts, release the key. The tractor could overturn and cause serious injury. USING THE LIFT LEVER To raise the cutting deck, move the lift lever to the left, then place it in the notch best suited for your application. Refer to SETTING THE CUTTING HEIGHT earlier in this section. Operate the tractor up and down slopes, never across slopes. Do not drive so that the tractor may tip over sideways. Before operating the tractor on any slope, walk the slope to look for possible hazards such as rocks. mounds, ruts, stumps or other surface irregularities which could cause the tractor to be upset. Avoid turns when driving on a slope. If a turn must be made, turn down the slope. Turning up a slope greatly increases the chance of a roll over. Avoid stopping when driving up a slope. If it is necessary to stop while driving up a slope, start up smoothly and carefully to reduce the possibility of flipping the tractor over backward. OPERATING ENGAGING THE ELECTRIC PTO (POWER TAKE-OFF) KNOB (if so equipped) Front View Pull Out Push In ! t THE HEADLIGHTS To turn the tractor's headlights on: • Start the engine following earlier in this section. the Figure 7 instructions • Move the throttle control lever to the FAST (rabbit) position. • Turn the key one notch counterclockwise into the On/Lights position of the ignition switch. Refer to Figure 4. • Pull the PTO knob outward into the engaged (ON) position. See Figure 7. • Keep the throttle lever in the FAST (rabbit) position for the most efficient use of the cutting deck and other attachments. 13 MOWING • The operator must remain in the tractor seat at all times. If the operator should leave the seat without pushing the PTO knob inward into the disengaged (OFF) position, the tractor's engine will shut off. IMPORTANT: This tractor is equipped with one of MTD's high quality cutting decks. The following information wilt be helpful when using the cutting deck with your tractor. The PTO knob cannot be in the engaged (ON) position when the tractor is driving in the reverse direction. Short grass invites weed growth and yellows quickly in dry weather. • The operator must remain in the tractor seat at all times. If the operator should leave the seat without moving the PTO lever into the disengaged (OFF) position and setting the parking brake, the engine wilt shut off. Refer to SAFETY INTERLOCK SWITCHES earlier in this section. • Under heavier conditions it may be necessary to go back over the cut area a second time to get a clean cut. • Do NOT attempt to mow heavy brush and weeds and extremely tall grass. Your tractor is designed to mow lawns, NOT clear brush. • Keep the blades sharp and replace the blades when worn. Refer to the MAINTENANCE section of this manual sharpening instructions. for proper blade SECTION 9: ADJUSTMENTS LEVELING THE DECK Front to Rear The front of the cutting deck is supported by a stabilizer bar that can adjusted to level the deck from front to rear. The front of the deck should be 1/4" to 3/8" lower than the rear of the deck. Keep clear of all moving parts. Be careful of heated surfaces and muffler. 15 SEAT ADJUSTMENT • Replace hex nut and lock washer and retighten the jam nut after proper adjustment is achieved. To adjust the position of the seat, move the seat adjustment lever (located under the seat) to the left and slide the seat forward or backwards. See Figure 9. Make sure seat is locked into one of the six adjustment positions before operating the tractor. NOTE: Threading the ball joints too far onto the drag links will cause the front tires to "toe-in" too far. Proper toe-in is between 1/16" and 5/16". Front tire toe-in can be measured as follows: • Place the steering wheel in position for straight ahead travel. Insert a 1/4" dowel up through aligning holes in both the steering gear and support plate. See Figure 11. Jam Nut Ball Joint before BRAKE ADJUSTMENT Figure 10 Adjust the drag links so that equal lengths are threaded into the ball joint on the left side and the ball joint on the right side: If the tractor does not come to a complete stop when the brake pedal is completely depressed, or if the tractor's rear wheels can roll with the parking brake applied, the brake is in need of adjustment. The brake disc can be found on the right side of the transmission in the rear of the tractor. Adjust if necessary as follows: • Loosen the jam nut found on the drag link at the rear of the ball joint. See Figure 10. • Remove the hex nut and lock washer on the top of ball joint. See Figure 10. • Looking at the transmission from the right side of the tractor, locate the compression spring and brake disc. See Figure 12. • Thread the ball joint toward the jam nut to shorten the drag link. Thread the ball joint away from the jam nut to lengthen the drag link. 16 • Loosen, but do NOT remove, the hex nut found on the right side of the brake assembly. Transmission Figure 12 SECTION 10: MAINTENANCE Pop open the protective cap on the end of the oil drain valve to expose the oil drain port. Route the opposite end of the hose into an appropriate oil collection container with a capacity great enough to collect the used oil. ENGINE Refer to the separate engine manual for engine maintenance instructions. Check engine oil level before each use as instructed in the separate engine manual packed with your unit. Read and fellow instructions carefully. Changing • Push the oil drain valve in slightly, then rotate counterclockwise and pull outward to begin draining oil. See Figure 13. • Service the oil filter (if so equipped) as instructed in the separate engine manual packed with your unit. Perform the above steps in the opposite order after oil has finished draining. Engine Oil • Unscrew oil fill cap and remove dipstick from the oil fill tube. See Figure 13. Oil Fill Cap Protective Cap Drain Hose • Refill the engine with new motor oil. IMPORTANT: Refill the engine with the proper capacity and weight of motor oil as instructed in the separate engine manual. Service air cleaner every 25 hours under normal conditions. Clean every few hours under extremely dusty condition. To service the air cleaner, refer to the separate engine manual packed with your unit. The spark plug(s) should be cleaned and the gap reset once a season. Spark plug replacement is recommended at the start of each mowing season; check engine manual for correct plug type and gap specifications. Oil Drain Valve NOTE: Oil Drain Port Single-cylinder engine shown. Valve locationwillvary withengine style, Figure 13 17 CLEANING THE ENGINE AND DECK Lower the deck by moving the lift lever into the bottom notch on the right fender. Any fuel or oil spilled on the machine should be wiped off promptly. Do NOT allow grass, leaves, and dirt to accumulate around the cooling fins of the engine or on any other part of the machine, especially the pulleys and other moving parts. Clean the underside of the deck with a wisk broom, putty knife or forced air after each mowing. Grasp the PTO idler pulley bracket (PTO engagement plate on manual PTO units) and pivot it toward the discharge chute to relieve tension on the belt. Remove the deck belt from around the electric PTO clutch (the bottom portion of the engine pulley on manual PTO units) and from around the PTO idler pulley(s). IMPORTANT: The use a pressure washer or garden hose to clean your tractor is NOT recommended. It may cause damage to electrical components, spindles, pulleys, bearings or the engine. The use of water will result in a shortened life of the tractor and reduce its serviceability. CUTTING NOTE: On units equipped with a 46-inch deck, the bottommost belt on the deck does NOT need to be removed in order to remove the deck. • Looking at the cutting deck from the right side of the tractor, locate the deck support pin on the rear right side of the deck. DECK REMOVAL • Pull the deck support pin outward to release the deck from the deck lift arm. To change or replace the deck belt(s) on your tractor, proceed as follows: NOTE: Removing the deck from the tractor as instructed earlier in this section will ease the following steps. Decks w/Electric PTO • Lower the deck by moving the lift lever into the bottom notch on the right fender. • Remove the belt guards by removing the self-tapping screws that fasten them to the deck surface. • Grasp the PTO idler pulley bracket and pivot it toward the discharge chute to relieve tension on the belt. • Remove the PTO belt from the electric PTO clutch and from around the PTO idler pulley. • Grasp the deck idler pulley and pivot it toward the left side of the deck to relieve tension on the deck belt. Remove the belt from around all three spindle pulleys and the deck idler pulley. • Route the new belts as shown in Figure 15. OEM belt part numbers are listed in the table on the following page. NOTE: 42-inch decks engaged with an electric PTO do NOT have a bottom belt or a center pulley. Disregard these items in Figure 15 when routing a replacement PTO belt on tractor's so equipped. • Remount the belt guards removed earlier. IMPORTANT: When removing the battery, disconnect the NEGATIVE (Black) wire from it's terminal first, followed by the POSITIVE (Red) wire. Re-install in reverse orde_ Upper Drive Belt • Locate the transmission idler pulley on the upper drive belt by looking through the battery tray opening. Refer to Figure 16. NOTE: Proper removal of the lower drive belt requires the removal of several tractor components. Read through the following procedure prior to attempting it to determine if you feel you could successfully complete it. If you don't, see an authorized MTD service dealer to have the belt changed. • On units equipped with an electric PTO, carefully unplug the tractor's wire harness from the connector on the electric PTO clutch. See Figure 17. Hex Bolt IMPORTANT: Note the routing of the lower drive belt around both the pulleys and the belt keepers BEFORE performing the following steps. o Electric PTO Clutch" • Locate the variable-speed pulley through the battery tray opening. See Figure 16. • Remove the variable-speed pulley by loosening the hex bolt that affixes it to the transmission. Use a second wrench to hold the hex nut on the bottom side of the pulley. • Slide the belt off of the variable-speed pulley as you lift the pulley up and out through the battery tray opening. NOTE: Jacking the rear of the tractor up off the ground and securing it with jackstands at this point in the procedure will ease the following steps, but is not necessary. NOTE: View shown from beneath tractor, Figure 18 21 o • Remove the hex bolt from the center of the engine pulley (or the electric PTO clutch on units so equipped) and gently lower it off of the engine crankshaft. Be careful not to lose any washers or spacers which may be found on top of the engine pulley or the electric PTO clutch. See Figure 18. Using two 9/16" wrenches, remove the pin from the speed control assembly. See Figure 20. Idler Place Wrenches Here Return Bracket • On units equipped with an electric PTO, the engine pulley is located directly above the electric PTO clutch. Lower the engine pulley far enough to be able to remove the upper drive belt from around it _==,_Clips C:Y IMPORTANT: When remounting the engine pulley or electric PTO clutch, torque the center hex bolt to between 38 foot-pounds and 50 foot-pounds. Drive Pedal Return Spring • Remove the drive belt by feeding it from both ends toward the front idler pulley on the double-idler bracket. See Figure 16. Speed Control Assembly Figure 20 • Reassemble by following the above steps in reverse order. Thread the idler adjustment rod inward or outward to lengthen or shorten the travel of the double-idler bracket until proper adjustment is achieved. • Reroute the new belt around the pulleys, belt keepers and keeper pins EXACTLY as the old one was routed. Refer to Figure 16. The drive pedal is properly adjusted when the hole found in the double-idler bracket has approximately 1-3/8" of travel with ten pounds of pressure applied to the drive )edal. See Figure 19. • Reassemble by following the above steps in reverse order. View shown from above tractor, Figure 19 Adjust the drive pedal after replacing the drive belts on your tractor, if necessary, as follows: _Hex Block of Wood Flange Nut • Locate the speed control assembly on the underside of the steering support bracket. See Figure 20. • Remove both hairpin clips from the pin which is fastened to the speed control assembly (be careful not to lose the small flat washers found ! on the pin). See Figure 20. Cutting Blade • Remove the drive pedal return spring. Figure 21 • Use a 15/16" wrench to remove the hex flange nut that secures the blade to the spindle assembly. See Figure 21. 22 • After cleaning the battery and terminals, apply a light coat of petroleum jelly or grease to the terminals and over the positive terminal boot. NOTE: The hex flange nut has a right-handed (normal) thread pattern. Do NOT attempt to force the nut in the incorrect direction. Doing so may damage the nut and create a safety hazard. • Always keep the boot positioned over the positive terminal to prevent shorting. To properly sharpen the cutting blades, remove equal amounts of metal from both ends of the blades along the cutting edges. See Figure 22. Sharpen the cutting edge straight across, parallel to the trailing edge, at a 25 ° to 30 ° angle. See Figure 22. IMPORTANT: If removing the battery for any reason, disconnect the NEGATIVE (Black) wire from it's terminal first, followed by the POSITIVE (Red) wire. When re-installing the battery, always connect the POSITIVE (Red) wire its terminal first, followed by the NEGATIVE (Black) wire. Be certain that the wires are connected to the correct terminals. reversing them could change the polarity and cause damage to your engine's alternating system. IMPORTANT: If the cutting edge of the blade has already been sharpened to within 5/8" of the wind wing radius, or if any metal separation is present, replace the blades with new ones. See Figure 22. Charging If the unit has not been put into use for an extended period of time, charge the battery with an automotive-type 12-volt charger for a minimum of one hour at six amps. TIRES The recommended operating tire pressure is approximately 10 psi for the rear tires and 14 psi for the front tires. Refer to the tire sidewall for exact tire Figure 22 It is extremely important that each cutting blade edge be ground equally to maintain proper blade balance. An unbalanced blade wilt cause excessive vibration when rotating at high speeds, may cause damage to the tractor and result in personal injury. The blade can be tested by balancing it on a round shaft screwdriver. Grind metal from the heavy side until it balances evenly. manufacturer's recommended overinflate. Do not could cause the FUSE A fuse is installed in your tractor's wiring harness to protect the tractor's electrical system from damage caused by excessive amperage. Always use the same capacity fuse for replacement. If the electrical system does not function, or your tractor's engine will not crank, first check to be certain that the fuse has not blown. It can be found under the hood mounted behind the top of dash panel on the support bar. Pull the fuse out and compare it with Figure 23 to determine if it is good or bad. When replacing the blade, be sure to install the blade with the side of the blade marked "Bottom" (or with a part number stamped in it) facing the ground when the mower is in the operating position. IMPORTANT: Use a torque wrench to tighten the blade spindle hex flange nut to between 70 footpounds and 90 foot-pounds. PIVOT POINTS Lubricate all pivot points (drive pedal, brake pedal, etc.) at least once a season with light oil. LINKAGE Lubricate all the pivot points on the drive, brake and lift linkage at least once a season with SAE 30 engine oil. STEERING GEAR Lubricate the teeth of the steering gear with an all-purpose automotive grease every 25 hours of operation or once a season. WHEELS Both the front wheels and the rear wheels should be removed from the axles once a season. Lubricate the axles and the rims well with an all-purpose automotive grease before re-installing them. FRONT AXLES Your tractor may be equipped with grease fittings on the ends of the front pivot bar. Refer Figure 10. Lubricate both the left and the right front axles with a grease gun at least once a season. 24 SECTION Trouble 12: TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE Possible Corrective Action Cause(s) Engine will not crank Safety switch button not depressed. There are three safety switches in the starting circuit of your unit: the brake pedal switch, the seat switch and the PTO switch. Make certain the actuator found on the brake control assembly is fully depressing the button on the brake switch. The PTO must be in the disengaged (OFF) position and the operator must be seated on the tractor in order to start the engine, also. The battery must be installed with negative terminal attached to black ground wire. Negative terminal is identified at the post by "NEG", "N" or "-". The positive terminal, identified by "POS", "P" or "+", must be attached to the thick red wire which goes to the solenoid. Charge at six amps with a 12-volt automotive4ype battery charger for one hour or until fully charged. Refer to operator's manual for fuse location. Replace fuse with automotive type fuse of the proper amperage. Fuses seldom fail without a reason. The problem must be corrected. Check for loose connections in the fuse holder. Replace fuse holder if necessary. A dead short may be in the cranking or charging circuit where the insulation may have rubbed through and exposed the bare wire. Replace the wire or repair with electrician's tape if the wire strands have not been damaged. Note: Look for a wire pinched between body panels, burned by the exhaust pipe or muffler or rubbed against a moving part. Refer to the OPERATION section of this manual for the correct position of the throttle control and choke for starting. Gasoline tank empty. Fill. Fuel line or in-line fuel filter plugged. Remove and clean fuel line. Replace fuel filter (if so equipped) if necessary. Spark plug lead disconnected. Connect lead. Using a spark tester, check for spark. If no spark is present, have engine's magneto serviced by an authorized engine dealer. If the air cleaner is dirty, the engine may not start. Refer to the engine manual packed with your unit. Check oil level. Dipstick not seated or broken. Replace defective part. Engine breather defective. Replace. Stop engine immediately. Check all pulleys, blade adapters, keys and bolts for tightness and spindle damage. Tighten or replace any loose or damaged parts. Always replace damaged blade. Only use original equipment blades. Throttle must be set at full throttle. Use lower ground speed. The slower your ground speed, the better the quality of cut. Raise deck.
