Please refer to your control panel install-ation manual for details.Selecting a LocationSelecting a suitable location is critical for the COdetector. The Consumer Product Safety Commission(CPSC) recommends to use at least one CO detectorper household, located as near as possible to sleepingareas of the home, because the human body is mostvulnerable to the CO gas effect during sleeping hours.1WS4933 (433MHz) Series Wireless Carbon MonixideDetectorInstallation and Operating InstructionsRead these instructions thoroughly before installation and use of the WS4933
Figure 2: CO Detector PlacementLegendA: BedroomB: Living RoomC: KitchenD: BasementE: GarageFor added protection, install additional CO detect-ors in every separate bedroom and on every level ofyour home. If your bedroom hallway is longer than14 meters (40 feet), install a CO detector at BOTHends of the hallway. Install an additional detector 6meters (20 feet) away from the furnace or fuelburning heat source. For maximum protection, the detector should alsobe located outside primary sleeping areas or at eachlevel of your home. Mount the detector on a firmwall or ceiling.DO NOT install CO detectors:lIn locations where temperature may be below0ºC (14ºF) or above 40ºC (104ºF).lIn locations where humidity is below 10% orabove 93% RH non-condensing.lNear paint thinner fumes.lNear air conditioners, furnaces, stoves, fire-places and any other ventilation source that mayinterfere with CO gas entering the detector.lIn locations where furniture or draperies mayobstruct the air flow.lIn exhaust streams from gas engines, vents, flues or chimneys.lWhere dirt or dust could collect and block thesensor and prevent it from working.lIn locations that can be reached by children.lIn turbulent air from ceiling fans.lIn close proximity to an automobile exhaust pipe- this will damage the detector.MountingThe detector can be mounted on a wall or ceiling. For EN approved sites, only ceiling installation isallowed. The WS4933 must be mounted with its bracket(when it is attached to its bracket the tamper switchis pressed and the detector automatic reset is per-formed).1. Refer to the diagram below and install usingscrew locations as required. Maneuver thebase so the screws are at the elbow of thescrew slots and secure.2. In general, biochemistryphenomena have shown that the presence of CO gasinhibits the blood's capacity to transport oxygenthroughout the body, which can eventually lead tobrain damage. In any enclosed space (home, office)even a small accumulation of CO gas can be quitedangerous. Although many products of combustioncan cause discomfort and adverse health effects, itis CO gas which presents the greatest threat to life.Carbon monoxide is produced by the incompletecombustion of fuels such as natural gas, propane,3
heating oil, kerosene, coal, charcoal, gasoline, orwood. The incomplete combustion of fuel can occurin any device which depends on burning for energyor heat such as furnaces, boilers, room heaters, hotwater heaters, stoves, grills, and in any gasolinepowered vehicle or engine (e.g., generator set, lawnmower). Tobacco smoke also adds CO to theair you breathe. When properly installed and main-tained, your natural gas furnace and hot waterheater do not pollute your air space with CO. Nat-ural gas is known as a “clean burning” fuel becauseunder correct operating conditions, the combustionproducts are water vapor and carbon dioxide(CO2), which is not toxic. The products of com-bustion are exhausted from furnaces and water heat-ers to the outside by means of a fuel duct orchimney. Correct operation of any burning equip-ment requires two key conditions:a. An adequate supply of air for complete com-bustion.b. Proper venting of the products of combustionfrom the furnace through the chimney, vent orduct to the outside.Typical carbon monoxide gas problems are sum-marized here:a. Equipment problems, due to defects, poormaintenance, damaged and cracked heatexchangers.b. Collapsed or blocked chimneys or flues, dis-lodged, disconnected or damaged vents.c. Downdraft in chimneys or flues. This can becaused by very long or circuitous flue runs, improper location of flue exhaust or wind con-ditions.d. Improper installation or operation of equip-ment, chimney or vents.e. Air tightness of house envelop/inadequate com-bustion of air.f. Inadequate exhaust of space heaters or appli-ances.g. Exhaust ventilation/fireplace competing forair supply.Potential sources of carbon monoxide in your homeor office include clogged chimney, wood stove, wood or gas fireplace, automobile and garage, gaswater heater, gas appliance, gas or kerosene heater, gas or oil furnace, and cigarette smoke.More information about conditionswhich result in transient CO situations:1. Excessive spillage or reverse venting of fuelburning appliances caused by:a. Outdoor ambient conditions such as winddirection and or velocity, including highgusts of wind; heavy air in the vent pipes(cold humid air with extended periodsbetween cycles).b. Negative pressure differential resultingfrom the use of exhaust fans.c. Simultaneous operation of several fuelburning appliances competing for limitedinternal air.d. Vent pipe connection vibrating loose fromclothes dryers, furnaces, or water heaters.e. Obstructions in or unconventional ventpipe designs which amplify the above situ-ation.2. Extended operation of unventilated fuel burn-ing devices (range, oven, fireplace, etc).3. Temperature inversions which can trapexhaust gases near the ground.4. Car idling in an open or closed attached gar-age, or near a home.Possible Symptoms of Carbon Monox-ide PoisoningCarbon monoxide is colorless, odorless, tasteless, and very toxic. When inhaled, it produces an effectknown as chemical asphyxiation. Injury is due to thecombining of CO with the available hemoglobin inthe blood, lowering the oxygen-carrying capacity ofthe blood. In the presence of CO gas, the body isquickly affected by oxygen starvation. The fol-lowing symptoms are related to CO poisoning andshould be discussed with all members of the house-hold:a. Mild exposure: slight headache, nausea, vomit-ing, fatigue (often described as "Flu-like"symptoms).b. Medium exposure: severe throbbing headache, drowsiness, confusion, fast heart ratec. Extreme exposure: unconsciousness, con-vulsions, cardiorespiratory failure, death.d. Many cases of reported CARBONMONOXIDE POISONING indicate thatwhile victims are aware they are not well, they become so disoriented they are unable tosave themselves by either exiting the buildingor calling for assistance. Young children andhousehold pets are typically the first affected.Action to Take When Alarm SoundsIn case harmful levels of CO gas are detected, yourdetector will go into continuous full alarm. Try totake the following necessary actions immediately:1. Push the detector Test/Hush switch to silencethe alarm. Warning: Never remove the batteryto silence the alarm. Removing the batteryremoves your protection! Pushing theTest/Hush button mutes the alarm for 5minutes. After 5 minutes, the alarm resumesif CO levels remain high.Call your emergency service (Please write thetelephone numbers):(tel. No. ...........................);or fire department:(tel. No. ..........................).2. Immediately move to fresh air - outdoors orby opening door/window. Do a head count tocheck that all persons are accounted for. Do4
not reenter the premises nor move away fromthe open door/window until the emergency ser-vices responders have arrived, the premiseshave been aired out, and your alarm remainsin normal condition.3. After following steps 1 - 3, if your alarmreactivates within a 24-hour period, repeatsteps 1 - 3 and call a qualified technician(Tel. No. ........) to investigate for sources ofCO gas from fuel burning equipment and appli-ances, and inspect for proper operation of thisequipment. If problems are identified duringthis inspection, have the equipment servicedimmediately. Note any combustion equipmentnot inspected by the technician and consult themanufacturer instructions, or contact the man-ufacturers directly, for more informationabout CO safety and this equipment. Makesure that motor vehicles are not, and have notbeen, operating in an attached garage or adja-cent to the residence.Warning: CO gas can be extremely fatal andcan come from several possible sources. Thisdetector only indicates the presence of CO gasnear the sensor. CO gas may be present in otherareas of the premises.Action to be Taken After the Problemhas been CorrectedOnce the problem of CO gas presence in thepremises has been corrected, the detector's alarmshould be off. After waiting for 10 minutes, pushthe Test/Hush button to verify that the detector isfunctioning properly.Warnings and LimitationsThis product is intended for use in ordinary indoorlocations of family living units. It is not designed tomeasure compliance with Occupational Safety andHealth Administration (OSHA) commercial orindustrial standards.Caution: The detector will only indicate the pres-ence of carbon monoxide gas at the sensor. Carbonmonoxide gas may be present in other areas.Individuals with medical problems may considerusing warning devices which provide audible andvisual signals for carbon monoxide concentrationsunder 30 ppm.The alarm, including the sensor, is not to be locatedwithin 1.5m (5 feet) of any cooking appliance. The detector may not alarm at low carbon monox-ide levels. The Occupational Safety and HealthAssociation (OSHA) has established that continuousexposure levels of 50 ppm should not be exceeded inan 8 hour period. Individuals with medical con-ditions may consider more sensitive detectiondevices. The CO gas detector is not suitable as a smokedetector or fire detector. This detector is not suit-able to install in hazardous locations as defined inthe National Electrical Code.Carbon monoxide must reach the detector forproper performance of CO gas detection. Thedetector may not protect people who are at specialrisk from carbon monoxide exposure by reason ofage, pregnancy or medical condition. If in doubt, consult your medical practitioner.CO detectors may wear out because they containelectronic parts that fail over time. Test yourdetector at least every week.Instruct children never to play with the detector.Never use detergents or other solvents to clean thedetector.Avoid spraying air fresheners, hair spray, paint orother aerosols near the detector.Do not paint the detector. Paint will seal the detect-ors vents and interfere with detecting CO gas.Detailed information on conditionswhich can result in transient CO situ-ations:1.
