The Consumer ProductSafety Commission (CPSC) recommends to use at least one CO detector per house-hold, located as near as possible to sleeping areas of the home, because the humanbody is most vulnerable to the effects of CO gas during sleeping hours.Figure 2: CO Detector PlacementLegendA: BedroomB: Living RoomC: KitchenD: BasementE: GarageFor added protection, install additional CO detectors in every bedroom and on everylevel of your home. If your bedroom hallway is longer than 14 meters (40 feet), installa CO detector at BOTH ends of the hallway. Install an additional detector 6 meters(20 feet) away from the furnace or fuel burning heat source. For maximum protection, the detector should also be located outside primary sleeping areas or at each level ofyour home. Mount the detector on a firm wall or ceiling.DO NOT install CO detectors:lIn locations where temperature may be below 0 ºC (14 ºF) or above 40 ºC (104 ºF).lIn locations where humidity is below 10% or above 93% RH non-condensing.lNear paint thinner fumes.lNear air conditioners, furnaces, stoves, fireplaces and any other ventilation sourcethat may interfere with CO gas entering the detector.lIn locations where furniture or draperies may obstruct the air flow.lIn exhaust streams from gas engines, vents, flues or chimneys.lWhere dirt or dust could collect and block the sensor and prevent it from working.lIn locations that can be reached by children.lIn turbulent air from ceiling fans.lIn close proximity to an automobile exhaust pipe - this will damage the detector.
MountingThe detector can be mounted on a wall or ceiling. For EN approved sites, only ceilinginstallation is allowed. The CO detector must be mounted with its bracket (when it is attached to its bracketthe tamper switch is pressed and the detector automatic reset is performed).1. Refer to Figure 3 and install using screw locations as required. Maneuver themounting bracket so the screws are at the elbow of the screw slots and secure.2. In general, biochemistry phenomena have shown that the presence of CO gasinhibits the blood's capacity to transport oxygen throughout the body, which can even-tually lead to brain damage. In any enclosed space (home, office), even a small accu-mulation of CO gas can be quite dangerous. Although many products of combustion can
cause discomfort and adverse health effects, it is CO gas which presents the greatestthreat to life.Carbon monoxide is produced by the incomplete combustion of fuels such as naturalgas, propane, heating oil, kerosene, coal, charcoal, gasoline, or wood. The incompletecombustion of fuel can occur in any device which depends on burning for energy orheat such as furnaces, boilers, room heaters, hot water heaters, stoves, grills, and inany gasoline powered vehicle or engine (e.g., generator set, lawnmower). Tobaccosmoke also adds CO to the air you breathe. When properly installed and maintained, your natural gas furnace and hot water heater do not pollute your air space with CO.Natural gas is known as a “clean burning” fuel because under correct operating con-ditions, the combustion products are water vapor and carbon dioxide (CO2), which isnot toxic. The products of combustion are exhausted from furnaces and water heatersto the outside by means of a fuel duct or chimney. Correct operation of any burningequipment requires two key conditions:a. An adequate supply of air for complete combustion.b. Proper ventilation of the products of combustion from the furnace through thechimney, vent or duct to the outside.Typical carbon monoxide gas problems are summarized here:a. Equipment problems, due to defects, poor maintenance, damaged and crackedheat exchangers.b. Collapsed or blocked chimneys/flues, dislodged, disconnected or damaged vents.c. Downdraft in chimneys or flues. This can be caused by very long or circuitousflue runs, improper location of flue exhaust or wind conditions.d. Improper installation or operation of equipment, chimney or vents.e. Airtight homes with inadequate flow of fresh air for the combustion process.f. Inadequate exhaust of space heaters or appliances.g. Exhaust ventilation/fireplace competing for air supply.Potential sources of carbon monoxide in your home or office include clogged chimney, wood stove, wood or gas fireplace, automobile and garage, gas water heater, gas appli-ance, gas or kerosene heater, gas or oil furnace, and cigarette smoke.More information about conditions which result in transient COsituations:1. Excessive spillage or reverse venting of fuel burning appliances caused by:a. Outdoor ambient conditions such as wind direction and or velocity, includinghigh gusts of wind; heavy air in the vent pipes (cold humid air with extendedperiods between cycles).b. Negative pressure differential resulting from the use of exhaust fans.c. Simultaneous operation of several fuel burning appliances competing for lim-ited internal air.d. Vent pipe connection vibrating loose from clothes dryers, furnaces, or waterheaters.e. Obstructions in unconventional vent pipe designs which amplify the above situ-ation.2. Extended operation of unventilated fuel burning devices (oven, fireplace, etc).3. Temperature inversions which can trap exhaust gases near the ground.4. Car idling in an open or closed attached garage, or near a home.Possible Symptoms of Carbon Monoxide PoisoningCarbon monoxide is colorless, odorless, tasteless, and very toxic. When inhaled, it pro-duces an effect known as chemical asphyxiation. Injury is due to the combining of COwith the available hemoglobin in the blood, lowering the oxygen-carrying capacity ofthe blood. In the presence of CO gas, the body is quickly affected by oxygen star-vation. The following symptoms are related to CO poisoning and should be discussedwith all members of the household:a. Mild exposure: slight headache, nausea, vomiting, fatigue (often described as"flu-like" symptoms).b. Medium exposure: severe throbbing headache, drowsiness, confusion, fast heartratec. Extreme exposure: unconsciousness, convulsions, cardiorespiratory failure, death.d. Many cases of reported CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING indicate thatwhile victims are aware they are not well, they become so disoriented they areunable to save themselves by either exiting the building or calling for assistance.Young children and household pets are typically the first affected.Action to Take When Alarm SoundsIn case harmful levels of CO gas are detected, your detector will go into continuousfull alarm. Try to take the following necessary actions immediately:1. Push the detector Test/Hush switch to silence the alarm. Warning: Never removethe battery to silence the alarm. Removing the battery removes your protection!Pushing the Test/Hush button mutes the alarm for 5 minutes. After 5 minutes, thealarm resumes if CO levels remain high. Call your emergency service. Pleasewrite down the telephone numbers:Emergency Services:Tel. No. ...................................... Tel. No. ......................................
2. Immediately move to fresh air - outdoors or by opening door/window. Do a headcount to check that all persons are accounted for. Do not reenter the premises normove away from the open door/window until the emergency services respondershave arrived, the premises have been aired out, and your alarm remains in nor-mal condition.3. After following steps 1 - 3, if your alarm reactivates within a 24-hour period, repeat steps 1 - 3 and call a qualified technician (Tel. No. ........................) toinvestigate for sources of CO gas from fuel burning equipment and appliances, and inspect for proper operation of this equipment. If problems are identified dur-ing this inspection, have the equipment serviced immediately. Note any com-bustion equipment not inspected by the technician and consult the manufacturerinstructions, or contact the manufacturers directly, for more information aboutCO safety and this equipment. Make sure that motor vehicles are not, and havenot been, operating in an attached garage or adjacent to the residence.WARNING: CO gas can be extremely fatal and can come from several possiblesources. This detector only indicates the presence of CO gas near the sensor. COgas may be present in other areas of the premises.Action to be Taken After the Problem has been CorrectedOnce the CO gas presence in the premises has been corrected, the detector's alarmshould be off. After waiting for 10 minutes, push the Test/Hush button to verify thatthe detector is functioning properly.Warnings and LimitationsThis product is intended for use in ordinary indoor locations of family living units. It isnot designed to measure compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Admin-istration (OSHA) commercial or industrial standards.CAUTION: The detector will only indicate the presence of carbon monoxide gas atthe sensor. Carbon monoxide gas may be present in other areas.lIndividuals with medical problems may consider using warning devices that provideaudible and visual signals for carbon monoxide concentrations under 30 ppm.lThe alarm, including the sensor, is not to be located within 1.5m (5 feet) of anycooking appliance.lThe detector may not emit an alarm at low carbon monoxide levels. The Occu-pational Safety and Health Association (OSHA) has established that continuousexposure levels of 50 ppm should not be exceeded in an 8 hour period. Individualswith medical conditions may consider more sensitive detection devices.lThe CO gas detector is not suitable as a smoke detector or fire detector. Thisdetector is not suitable to install in hazardous locations as defined in the NationalElectrical Code.lCarbon monoxide must reach the detector for proper performance of CO gas detec-tion. The detector may not protect people who are at special risk from carbonmonoxide exposure by reason of age, pregnancy or medical condition. If in doubt, consult your medical practitioner.lCO detectors may wear out because they contain electronic parts that fail overtime. Test your detector at least every week.lInstruct children never to play with the detector.lNever use detergents or other solvents to clean the detector.lAvoid spraying air fresheners, hair spray, paint or other aerosols near the detector.lDo not paint the detector. Paint will seal the detectors vents and interfere withdetecting CO gas.Detailed information on conditions which can result in transientCO situations:1.
