2 SETUP AND SERVICE GUIDE DIGITAL MICROWAVE SYSTEM 9158000-0395-02, REV. AAbout the DMS 915The Digital MicroWave System (DMS) 915 is amicrocontroller-based anti-theft system. The DMS915 produces an alarm when it detects aSensormatic tag, a packaged semiconductordiode. To detect the tag, the system performs thefollowing operations:• The system generates a “zone of protection,”typically at a store exit. This zone consists oftwo overlapping fields. The first field is a staticor frequency-hopping, frequency modulatedRF signal. The second field is a frequency shiftkey (FSK) modulated and predominatelyelectrostatic field called an E-field.• When a tag enters the zone, it combines theRF signal and the E-field into a compositesignal that radiates to the system RFantennas. The system detects the compositesignal, separates the modulation, andcompares the recovered modulation to themodulation transmitted. If the two signalsmatch, the system issues an alarm. The DMS 915 is programmed using an externalhand-held computer. Programmable featuresinclude RF hopping bank or frequency selection,RF power level selection, electrostatic fieldfrequency selection, “tag-too-close” functionenable/disable, alarm tone selection, alarmduration selection, selectable hits required foralarm, and alarm count set/reset control.System ComponentsDMS 915 components include E-field radiators, RFantennas, remote alarms, and a programmablepower packThree types of E-field radiators are:• Wire cloth – usually recessed in the floor orsometimes laid on the floor under a rubberpad.• Plate – a metal plate concealed inside apedestal at the side of the exit.• Vortex – a long aluminum bar hung across theexit. The RF antennas are used to radiate thefrequency-hopping, frequency-modulated RFsignal. These antennas mount in a variety of ways. They can be concealed above the ceiling, mounted in pods, concealed in the floor, ormounted in pedestal enclosures located at thestore exit. The remote alarm provides a audio/visual signalthat a tag has entered the “zone of protection.”The power pack powers and controls the system. The pack is typically concealed inside anenclosure.
