Choose the best locationBefore choosing a location for your new phone, read the INSTALLATION CONSIDERATIONSincluded in the PRECAUTIONS AND IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS.Here are some important guidelines you should consider:•Be sure there is sufficient space to raise the base antenna to a vertical position.•The location should be close to both a phone jack and a continuous power outlet whichis not switchable.•Keep the base and handset away from sources of electrical noise such as motors andfluorescent lighting.•The base can be placed on a desk, tabletop, or mounted on a standard wall plate.B. Install the rechargeable battery pack into the handsetThe handset is powered by a rechargeable battery pack. The battery rechargesautomatically when the handset is placed in the base unit.Charge the handset battery pack for at least 15-20 hours before using your new cordlesstelephone for the first time! To maximize the charge capacity of your battery pack, DO NOTplug the telephone cord into the base unit and wall jack until the battery is fully charged. NOTE: If your home has specially wired alarm equipment connected to the telephone line, besure that installing the system does not disable your alarmequipment. If you have questions about what will disable youralarm equipment, contact your telephone company or a qualifiedinstaller.1) Press down on the handset battery case cover (use the fingerindention for a better grip) and slide the cover downward to remove.2) Plug the battery pack connector (red & black wires) into the small,black jack inside the battery compartment (the connector notches fitinto the grooves of the jack only one-way). Match the wire colors tothe polarity label in the battery compartment, connect the battery andlisten for a click to insure connection.3) Make certain you have made a good connection by slightly pulling onthe battery wires to insure that there is a secure connection. 35) Place the handset in the base with the keypad facingforward. Be sure there is sufficient space to raise the baseantenna to a vertical position.NOTE: • Use only the Uniden Battery (BT-905) suppliedwith your phone. Replacement batteries are alsoavailable through the Uniden Parts Department at(800) 554-3988, Monday thru Friday from 7:00 a.m.to 5:00 p.m. or online at www.uniden.comBattery use time (per charge)From fully charged•Up to seven hours continuous use•Up to fourteen days when the handset is in the standby modeLow Battery AlertWhen the battery pack is very low and needs to be charged, the phone is programmed toeliminate functions in order to save power. If the phone is not in use, the talk/batt low LEDflashes when the battery pack is low.If the phone is in use, the talk/batt low LED flashes and the handset beeps. Complete yourconversation as quickly as possible and return the handset to the base for charging.Cleaning the battery charging contactsTo maintain a good charge, it is important to clean the chargingcontacts on both the handset and base unit once a month. Use a dry cloth or a pencil eraser to clean. If the contactsbecome very dirty, using water only, dampen a cloth to cleanthe charging contacts. Then make sure to go back over thecharging contacts with a dry cloth before returning the handsetto the base to charge.NOTE: Even when the battery pack is not being used, it will gradually discharge over along period of time. For optimum performance, be sure to return the handset to thebase unit after each telephone call.C. Connect the base unit1) Connect the AC adapter to the DC IN 9V jackand a standard 120V AC wall outlet.2) Wrap the cord inside the molded wiring channelas shown.3) Set the base unit on a desk or tabletop, andplace the handset in the base unit.4) Make sure the charge/in use LED illuminates. If the LED does not illuminate, check to see thatthe AC adapter is plugged in and the handsetmakes good contact with the base chargingcontacts.NOTICE: Place the power cord so it does not create a trip hazard or where it couldbecome chafed and create a fire or electrical hazard.NOTE:•Use only the supplied AD-446 AC adapter. Do not use any other ACadapter.•Connect the AC adapter to a continuous power supply.•Place the base unit close to the AC outlet so that you can unplug the AC adaptereasily.After installing the battery pack in the handset, charge your handset at least 15-20hours before plugging into the phone line. Making and Receiving CallsNOTE: • The redial/p key redials the last number dialed.•The redialed number can be up to 24 digits long.5) Connect the telephone line cord to the TEL LINEjack and a telephone outlet once the handset isfully charged.TIP: If your telephone outlet isn’tmodular, contact your telephonecompany for assistance.D. Choose the dialing modeMost phone systems use tone dialing which sends DTMF tones through the phone lines.However some phone systems still use pulse dialing such as in rural areas. The defaultsetting is tone dialing. Depending on your dialing system, set the mode as follows:1) Press and hold flash until you hear a confirmation tone.2) To set the dial mode for pulse dialing, press #. Or to set the dial mode for tone dialing,press */tone. A confirmation tone sounds to indicate the setting is complete.•If you are not sure of your dialing system, set for tone dialing. Make a trial call. 5TerminologyThroughout this manual, terms such as Standby and Talk Mode are used. Below is theterminology explanation.•Talk Mode - The handset is off the base and talk has been pressed enabling a dialtone.•Standby Mode - The handset is not in use, off the base, and talk has not been pressed.A dial tone is not present.Adjusting the Ringer and Earpiece VolumeRinger toneWhen the phone is in standby mode, pressing the vol/ring key on the handset selects thehandset ringer tone. There are two ringer tones. Continue pressing the vol/ring key tolisten to all tones. The phone keeps the last ringer tone setting selected.Earpiece volumeThe handset earpiece volume settings (Low, Medium and High) can only be adjusted duringa call. Press the vol/ring key repeatedly to select Low, Medium and High. When you hangup, the phone keeps the last volume setting selected.Ringer MuteThe end key can be used to temporarily mute the ringer tone. When the handset is off thebase and the phone is ringing, press the end key and the ringer tone will be temporarilysilenced. The ringer tone will return to normal starting with the next incoming call.Tone Dialing Switch-overSome telephone companies use equipment that requires pulsedialing (sometimes referred to as rotary dialing). If you need to entertone dialing digits, you can switch-over to tone dialing during the call.For example, entering your bank account number after you havecalled your bank.Initially make your call with the pulse dialing mode. Once your callconnects, press */tone. Enter the desired number. These digits willbe sent as tone dialing. This special number can be stored in amemory location. This is referred to as Chain Dialing. Once the callends, the tone mode is canceled and pulse dialing mode resumes.NOTE: The tone feature only applies when the dial mode is set to pulse.Traveling Out-of-RangeDuring a call, as you begin to move your handset too far from your base unit, noiseincreases. If you pass the range limits of the base unit, your call will terminate within 1 minute.Selecting a Different ChannelIf you encounter interference while using your phone, you can manually change the phone’schannel for clear operation. This function works only when the phone is in use.Press channel. The talk/batt low LED flashes, indicating the phone is changing to anotherchannel.EXP3240  12/18/2 11:06 AM  Page 5
6PageTo locate the handset (while it’s off the base), press find handset on the base. The handset beepsfor 60 seconds.Paging is canceled when pressing any key, find handset on the base or return the handsetto the base.Flash and Call WaitingIf you have “Call waiting” service and a call waiting tone soundswhile you are on a call, press flash to accept the waiting call. Thereis a short pause, then you will hear the new caller. To return to theoriginal caller, press flash again.NOTE: You must subscribe through your local telephone company toreceive Call Waiting Service.Storing a Phone Number in MemoryYour cordless phone has 1 Rocket Dial memory location and 10 additional memorylocations for storing important telephone numbers. You can store your most frequent dialednumber in the one-touch Rocket Dial location.1) Remove the handset from the base.2) Press mem. The talk/batt low LED flashes.3) Enter the phone number, up to 20 digits. If a pause is neededduring the dialing sequence, press redial/p to insert a pause.Each pause counts as a digit and represents a two second delayin time between digits as they are sent.4) Press mem again.To actually store a number in it’s designated location; 5) Press Rocket Dial.or5) Press memory location (0-9) on the keypad to store a number.A tone indicates that the number is stored. If you enter a number in a location that has apreviously stored number it will overwrite the existing number without warning.NOTES: • The pause button counts as one digit. Pressing redial/p more than onceincreases the length of pause between numbers.• You have 30 seconds after pressing mem to enter the number you wish to store. Otherwise, the handset will beep rapidly.• Memory location for the Rocket Dial is independent from the memory location forMemory Dial.Dialing a Stored NumberUsing the memory location features1) Press talk, then press mem.2) Enter the memory location (0-9) on the keypad. The stored number automatically dials.NOTE: If you select a memory location that does not have a stored number, the handsetwill beep rapidly and the phone will not dial.EXP3240  12/18/2 11:06 AM  Page 6
7One-touch Rocket DialYour phone is equipped with “One-touch Rocket Dial” for instantdialing.  It is used to dial the phone number stored in the one-touchRocket Dial location (See “Storing a Phone Number in Memory”).To instantly dial the phone number stored in the one-touch Rocket Diallocation, simply press Rocket Dial.  (There is no need to press talk.The phone will automatically dial). If you press Rocket Dial and aphone number is not stored in the one-touch Rocket Dial location, thephone will beep rapidly and will not dial.Chain DialingThe memory locations on the handset are not limited to phone numbers. You can also storea group of numbers (up to 20 digits) that you need to enter once your call connects. This isreferred to as Chain Dialing.An example of this is a bank account number. Once you have called your bank, and areprompted to enter the account number, simply press mem and the location number(0-9)wherethe special number has been stored.Store your special number in memory as you would store a phone number (Refer to“Storing a Phone Number in Memory”).Erasing a Stored Number from Memory1) Remove the handset from the base unit.2) Press mem twice.3) Press Rocket Dial or the memory location (0-9). A tone indicates that the stored numberis erased from memory.Changing the Digital Security CodeThe digital security code is an identification code used to connect the handset and the baseunit. Normally, setting the code is not necessary.The first time you charge your handset, the security code is automatically set. In the raresituation that you suspect another cordless telephone is using the same security code, youcan change the code.1) Remove the handset from the base unit. Press and hold find handset on the base.2) The handset begins emitting a paging sound. While holding find handset for at least 3seconds, place the handset in the base unit. The paging sound stops. Leave thehandset in the base for more than 3 seconds. A new random security code is set.NOTE: If the handset battery pack is completely discharged or the battery pack is removed,the digital security code will be lost. 8TroubleshootingIf your cordless telephone is not performing to your expectations, please try these simplesteps.NOTE: Do not attempt to service this unit yourself. Servicing must be performed byqualified personnel.SymptomThe charge/in use LED won’t illuminate when the handset is placed in the base.The audio sounds weak and/or scratchy.Can’t make or receive calls.Handset doesn’t ring or receive a page.Severe noise interference If you still have a problemSuggestion•Make sure the AC adapter is plugged into the base and a wall outlet.•Make sure the handset is properly seated in the base.•Make sure that the charging contacts on the handset and on thebase are clean.•Move the handset and/or base to a different location away frommetal objects or appliances and try again.•Press channel to help eliminate background noise.•Check both ends of the telephone line cord.•Make sure the AC adapter is plugged into the base and a wall outlet.•Make sure that the base antenna is in the vertical position.•Disconnect the AC adapter for a few minutes, then reconnect it.•Change the digital security code (See page 7).•Make sure that the handset is not too far from the base.•The Nickel-Cadmium battery pack may be weak. Charge thebattery for 15-20 hours.•The handset may be too far away from the base.•Place the base away from appliances or metal objects.•Change the digital security code (See page 7).•Keep the handset away from microwave ovens, computers, remotecontrol toys, wireless microphones, alarm systems, intercoms,room monitors, fluorescent lights, and electrical appliances.•Move to another location or turn off the source of interference.•Call our customer hotline at 1-800-297-1023Liquid DamageMoisture and liquid can damage your cordless phone. In case of accidental submersion,please read the following steps.CaseIf the handset or base is exposed to moisture or liquid, but only affects the exterior plastic housing.If moisture or liquid has entered the plastic-housing (i.e. liquid can be heard in the phone or liquid has entered the battery compartment).If the base unit or the handset is submerged or covered in a sticky substance, such as juice.ActionWipe off the liquid and use as normal.1. Remove the battery cover of the handset and leave it off for ventilation.2.Remove the battery pack by disconnecting. 3.Leave the battery cover off and the battery pack disconnected for3 days for maximum drying time.4. Once completely dry, reconnect the battery pack and the battery cover.5.Recharge the handset’s battery pack for 20 hours in the base unitbefore using the phone.IMPORTANT: You must unplug the telephone line whilerecharging the battery pack to avoid charge interruption.Handset:1.Remove the battery cover of the handset and the battery pack bydisconnecting. 2.Let dry for at least 3 days.3. Once completely dry, reconnect the battery pack and the battery cover. 4.Recharge the handset’s battery pack for 20 hours in the base unitbefore using the phone.Base:1. Disconnect the AC adapter from the base unit, ending power supply.2.Disconnect the telephone cord from the base unit.3.Let dry for at least 3 days.CAUTION:DO NOT use a microwave oven to speed up the drying time. 10against other range claims.Telephone Line ProblemsThe FCC has granted the telephone company the right todisconnect service in the event that your phone causes problemson the telephone line. Also, the telephone company may makechanges in facilities and services which may affect the operation ofyour unit. However, your telephone company must give adequatenotice in writing prior to such actions to allow you time for makingnecessary arrangements to continue uninterrupted service.If you are having trouble with your telephone service, you mustfirst disconnect your phone to determine if it is the cause of yourproblem. If you determine that it is the cause, you must leave itdisconnected until the trouble has been corrected.Radio InterferenceRadio interference may occasionally cause buzzing and humming inyour cordless handset, or clicking noises in the base. Thisinterference is caused by external sources such as TV, refrigerator,vacuum cleaner, fluorescent lighting, or electrical storm. Your unitis NOT DEFECTIVE. If these noises continue and are too distracting,please check around your home to see what appliances may becausing the problem. In addition, we recommend that the base notbe plugged into a circuit that also powers a major appliancebecause of the potential for interference. Be certain that theantenna on the unit is fully extended when needed.In the unlikely event that you consistently hear other voices ordistracting transmissions on your phone, you may be receivingradio signals from another cordless telephone or other source ofinterference. Communications between thehandset and base of your cordless telephone are accomplished bymeans of radio waves which are broadcast over the open airways.Because of the inherent physical properties of radio waves, yourcommunications can be received by radio receiving devices otherthan your own cordless telephone unit.
