Choosing a ChannelYour radio has 22 channels and 99 Sub codes youcan use to talk to others. In order to speak tosomeone, each of you must set to the same channel and Sub code.To choose a channel:With the radio in "Normal" operating mode pressthe ch/scan key and press the ▲or ▼key toincrease or decrease the channel number displayed.Note: FRS channels 8-14 have an expectancyrange of up to 3 miles. GMRS channels 1-7, 15-22have an expectancy range of up to 10 miles bypressing the Power boostbutton.You can knowwhich GMRS or FRS channel is active by the icon.The  icon indicates GMRS channel, and the icon indicates FRS channel.Choosing a Sub CodeEach of the channels 1-22 may have any one ofthe codes, OFF or 1-99 selected. Code oF (OFF) indicates no Sub code selected and your radio canreceive a signal regardless of the code settings ofthe transmitting radio.1) Enter the Menu. The Sub code on the LCD display will appear.2) Press the ▲or ▼key to increase or decreasethe code number displayed. You can also selectoF (OFF) at this stage.3) Exit the Menu.Talking on Your RadioTo talk to others using the radio:1) Press and hold the PTT button and speak in aclear, normal voice about 2-3 inches away fromthe microphone. While you are transmitting, theicon will appear on the display. To avoid cutting off the first part of your transmission,pause slightly after pressing the PTT buttonbefore you start talking.2) When you are finished speaking, release the PTTbutton. You can now receive incoming calls. No license is required for operation on channels 8-14 or operation on anychannel in Canada.INSTALL THE BATTERYYour GMR1088-2CK radio uses the NiMH batterypack or 4 AAA alkaline batteries (not included).To install the NiMH battery pack:1) Make sure your radio is OFF.2) Release the battery cover clip, then remove thebattery cover.3) Install the NiMH battery pack into the batterycompartment. Be certain to follow the instructionwritten on the label on the battery pack.Installing the battery pack incorrectly will preventthe unit from operating.USING THE RADIOIn order to get the most out of your new radio, read thisreference guide completely before attempting to operatethe unit.Turning the Radio On and Adjusting the Volume1) Press and hold the sel/ key to turn the radio ON,and increase the speaker volume by pressing the ▲key. To decrease the volume, press the ▼key.2) Press and hold the sel/ key again to turn the radioOFF.Adjusting the Sound (Key Beeps)Your radio emits a beep each time one of the keys(except for the PTT, Power boostbutton, and callkey) is pressed.To turn this sound OFF, press and hold the call key whileturning ON the radio. Repeat this step to turn the sound ON.Navigating through the MenuTo access the advanced features of the GMR1088-2CK, your radio has a Menu function.•Power Boost Button for Maximum Range•Battery Charger•Battery Level Meter•Channel Monitor•Channel Scan•Keypad Lock•NOAA Emergency / Weather Channels•Emergency Weather AlertBATTERY LEVEL ANDLOW BATTERY ALERTThis unit has a battery level meter on the display to indicate the status of the batteries. When the battery in theunit is low, the battery level meter icon  will flash.Recharge the NiMH battery pack immediately or if you areusing the alkaline batteries, you must replace the alkalinebatteries in order to continue using the radio.Warning! To avoid the risk of personal injury or propertydamage from fire or electrical shock, only use the Unidenaccessories specifically designated for this product.1) To enter the Menu, press the sel/ key.2) Additional presses of the sel/ key willadvance you through the Menu until exiting to"Normal" operating mode.3) Other methods of exiting the Menu function are:a. Press and hold the sel/ key again.b. Press the PTT, Power boost button, mon, call,wx/alert, or ch/scan keyc. Wait 10 seconds until the unit automaticallyreturns to “Normal”mode.Note: When you press the Power boost button,boost and  icon appear on the display. Theradio will transmit Maximum power when a GMRSchannel is selected. After one minute past whenthe boost transmission is established, the transmis-sion stops automatically, and you will hear a boosttime out error tone.Voice Operated TransmissionYour GMR1088-2CK radio is equipped with a user selectable Voice Operated Transmitter (VOX) thatcan be used for automatic voice transmissions. TheVOX feature is designed to be used with a headsetwith a microphone. Transmission is initiated byspeaking into the remote microphone instead ofpushing the PTT button.To select the VOX level:1) Enter the Menu. Advance through the Menu untilthe vox icon appears on the display. The currentlevel (OFF, 1-3) will be indicated. Level oF (OFF)disables VOX, while levels 1-3 set the sensitivityof the VOX circuit.2) Press either the ▲or ▼key to the desired VOXsensitivity level. Use level 1 for increased sensitivity to voice in normally quiet environments, and use a higher level to reduceundesired activation in very noisy environments.3) Exit the Menu.Transmitting a Call ToneYour GMR1088-2CK radio is equipped with 5 selectable call tones that will be transmitted whenthe call key is pressed.To select a call tone:1) Enter the Menu. Advance through the Menu untilthe call icon is shown on the display. The currentcall tone number (1-5) will be indicated.2) Press the ▲or ▼key to increase or decreasethe number to the desired call tone. Each tonewill be heard through the speaker.3) Exit the Menu.To transmit the selected call tone, press the callkey. The selected tone will automatically be transmitted for a fixed length of time. Call Tone willbe cancelled when the PTT button or Power boostbutton is pressed.Channel Scan FeatureYour GMR1088-2CK radio has a channel scan feature that allows you to easily scan all 22 channels. When an active channel is detected, theradio will pause on that channel until the channel isclear. Then after a 2 second delay, the radio willcontinue scanning. Pressing the PTT button orPower boost button while the scan is paused on achannel will allow you to transmit on that channel.To turn ON channel scan:Press and hold the ch/scan key until the scan...icon is displayed. The channel number on the dis-NormalKey LockON-OFFON-OFFSilent ModeCall Tone1-5VOX LevelSUB CODENormalOFF, 1-99 OFF, 1-3GMR1088 RADIOUSING THE CHARGING CRADLEIf you use the rechargeable NiMH battery pack, twoGMR1088-2CK radios can be charged by using thecharging cradles.Make sure to turn the radio OFF before placingthe radio in the charging cradle. Otherwise thebattery level meter icon won’t indicate properly.1) Connect the AC adapter (# AD-0001) to DC IN9V jack and to a standard 120V AC wall outlet.2) Set the charging cradle on the desk or tabletop,and place the radio in the charging cradle withthe keypad facing forward.3) Make sure that the LED illuminates. Charge thebattery pack for 16 hours and remove the radiofrom the charging cradle after charge.Note: The charge indicator LED will remain on aslong as the radios are left in the charger.play will change as the radio rapidly cycles throughthe channels.To turn OFF channel scan:Press the sel/ ,call, Power boost button, PTT,wx/alert key, or press and hold the ch/scan key for2 seconds.Silent Call ModeWhen you turn on the silent mode, all incomingcalls are muted: the radio blinks the display backlight and call icon to alert you to an incomingcall. If you do not respond to the call within 5 seconds, the backlight turns off, and the call iconwill continuous blink until there is no signal. If theincoming call end in 5 seconds, the call icon disappears from the display. Silent mode is disabled for 15 seconds when you transmit,receive, or press any other button.To set the silent mode:1) Enter the Menu. Advance through the Menu untilthe silent indicator appears on the display. The current Silent mode status (OFF, ON) blinks onthe display.2) To switch the Silent mode from the oF (OFF) toon (ON), press the ▲key.3) Exit the Menu.Note: To prevent unwanted silent alerts, be sure touse a Sub code whenever you use the Silent modefeature.You can hear the received voice when you turn ONchannel scan and an active channel is detectedeven during silent mode. However, the (silent indi-cator) icon still appears.Key LockTo lock the keypad:1) Enter the Menu. Advance through the Menu untilthe  icon appears on the display. The currentKey Lock status oF (OFF) blinks on the display.2) To switch the Key Lock mode from oF (OFF) toon, press the ▲key.3) To confirm the setting, press the sel/ key.The radio returns to the "Normal" mode.Note: If you exit the setting mode before confirmingyour selection by pressing the sel/ key, the keyLock setting will be set tooF (OFF).To unlock the keypad:1)Press and hold the sel/ key to turn the radioOFF.2) Press and hold the sel/ key again to turn theradio ON. The keypad is unlocked.Automatic Power Save FeatureYour GMR1088-2CK radio has a unique circuitdesigned to dramatically extend the life of the batteries. If there is no transmission nor an incoming call within 3 seconds, your radio switchesto the Power Save mode. The radio is still able toreceive transmissions in this mode.LCD BacklightThe LCD Backlight will automatically turn ON whenany key (except the PTT button and Power boostbutton) is pressed. The LCD display will illuminatefor 10 seconds before turning OFF.Monitor Mode FeatureYour GMR1088-2CK radio allows you to listen forweak signals on the current channel at the press of akey.To turn ON the Monitor Mode:•Press mon for brief listening, the  icon willblink.•Press and hold mon for 2 seconds for continuous listening. The receiver circuit will stayopen, and letting in both the noise and weak signals.To turn OFF Monitor Mode:Press mon to return to "Normal" mode, and theicon stop blinking.Roger BeepRoger Beep is a BEEP that is sent to notify the endof transmission (PTT, Power boost, and VOX transmission). Roger Beep can be heard throughthe speaker when key beep is on. Roger Beep istransmitted even if key beep is turned off. When in the Weather Radio Alert mode,the system functions as it does in GMRS mode butalso monitors the selected weather channel foralerts when not communicating.While using the Weather Radio, you are not able toreceive GMRS/FRS communications.1) To turn ON the Weather Radio Broadcast mode,press the wx/alert key. The icon appearson the display.2) Press the ch/scan key, and press the ▲or ▼key to increase or decrease the number to thedesired Weather Channel.3) To exit the Weather Radio Broadcast mode,press the wx/alert key. The icon disappears from the display.• To change the channel continuously, press andhold the ▲or ▼key for more than 1 second.• When in the Weather Radio Broadcast mode, you can only set the Key Lock from the Menu mode.Choosing an Emergency/Weather ChannelThere are 7 NOAA channel frequencies availableand these frequencies are common between the USand Canada. You will need to know what frequency is being transmitted in your location.1) Press and hold the wx/alert key. The icon appears on the display.2) When the unit receives a Weather Alert, it beepsfor 5 seconds. The  icon, the  iconand channel indicator blinks.3) To turn OFF Weather Alert, press and hold thewx/alert key. The  icon disappears fromthe display.•When Weather Alert is activated, the highest priorityis given to this function.
