When the battery level islow, BATT appears and the battery level meter iconflashes. Recharge the NiMH battery packimmediately or, if you are using the alkalinebatteries, replace the alkaline batteries in order tocontinue using the radio.Warning! To avoid the risk of personal injury orproperty damage from fire or electrical shock, onlyuse the Uniden accessories specifically designatedfor this product.GMR1588-2CK/GMR1595-2CK RADIOCHARGING THE RADIOIf you use the rechargeable NiMH battery pack, twoGMR1588-2CK/GMR1595-2CK radios can becharged directly or by using the supplied chargingcradle.Charge Using the Radio1) Connect the AC adapter to or optional DCadapter to DC IN 9V jack of the radio andconnect it to the appropriate power source.2) Charge the battery pack for 16 hours until the battery indicator stop flashing.Using the Charging Cradle1) Connect the AC adapter or optional DC adapterto DC IN 9V jack of the radio and connect it tothe appropriate power source.2) Set the charging cradle on the desk or tabletop,and place the radio in the charging cradle withthe keypad facing forward.3) Charge the battery pack for 16 hours until thebattery indicator stops flashing. Then remove theradio from the charging cradle after completingcharging.Note:• Use only the supplied battery and AC adapter orapproved DC adapter from Uniden.• Charge time may vary depending on the batterylife remaining.• Do not recharge alkaline batteries. Doing so cancreate a safety hazard or damage the radio.• For fastest charging, turn off the radio beforecharging.compartment. Be sure to follow the instructionswritten on the battery pack’s label. Installing thebattery pack incorrectly will prevent the unit fromoperating.4) Replace the battery compartment door.In order to get the most out of your new radio, readthis reference guide completely before attempting tooperate the unit.Turning the Radio On and Adjusting the Volume1) Rotate vol/off clockwise until it clicks.2) To turn off the radio, rotate vol/offcounterclockwise until it clicks.Adjusting the Sound (Key Beeps)Your radio sounds a beep each time you press akey (except for PTT and Power boost).To turn this sound off, press and hold d-call whileturning on the radio. Repeat this step to turn thesound on.Choosing a ChannelYour radio has 22 channels and 142 Privacy codesyou can use to talk to others. In order to speak tosomeone, both your radios must be set to the samechannel and Privacy code.To choose a channel:Press ▲or ▼to increase or decrease the channelnumber displayed.Note: Channels 1-7 and 15-22 have a typical rangeof up to 5 miles, or 15 miles when you press PowerBoost. Channels 8-14 have a typical range of up to5 miles.You can see an indication of the range asyou change channels. HI appears when you selectchannels 1-7 or 15-22, and LO appears forchannels 8-14.Note: The range of channels 1-7 and 15-22 can beboosted only when you use NiMH batteries. Whenyou press Power boost while using alkalinebatteries, the range is not boosted.•Batteries must be installed for operation, evenfrom external power.•If battery power is low, you cannot operate theradio even using external power. Let thebatteries charge before using. If you try totransmit while power is low, the radioautomatically turns off.In order to use Direct Call and Auto ChannelChange, you need to initialize a couple of settingsin your radio:•Set the radio to Group Mode•Set a Group Number•Set a Ring Tone•Set a Unit Number•Set a "Nickname"Setting the Radio to Group ModeTo set the radio to Group Mode, which enablesDirect Call, Auto Channel Change and All Call,press and hold menu/grp for 2 seconds. The radiodisplays oF GRUP. Press ▲or ▼to display onGRUP, then press menu/grp to advance to Settingthe Group Number.Note: In group mode, you cannot receivetransmissions from other radios unless they arealso set to the same channel and group number.Setting the Group NumberSet the group number for your radio group from 0-142. Everyone in your group must select thesame group number in order to communicate witheach other.1) Press and hold menu/grp for 2 seconds. Theradio displays on GRUP.2) Tap menu/grp. The radio displays Gnnn (nis anumber). Press ▲or ▼to select the groupnumber.3) Press PTT or Power boost to return to normaloperation, or continue to the next section.Setting the Ring ToneThis setting selects the tone you hear whensomeone places a direct call to you.1) Press and hold menu/grp for 2 seconds, thentap menu/grp two times until the radio displaysn RING.2) Press ▲or ▼to select the desired ring sound.With each press, you hear a sample of theselected tone.3) Press PTT or Power boost to return to normaloperation, or continue to the next section.Setting the Unit NumberEach radio in your group needs to be set to aunique unit number, from 1-16.1) Press and hold menu/grp for 2 seconds, thentap menu/grp three times until the radiodisplays n - - - - (or your current nickname).2) Press ▲or ▼to select the desired unit number.3) Press PTT to return to normal operation, orcontinue to the next section.Setting Your  NicknameYour nickname appears on other units’displayswhen you make a group call or direct call. This isalso the name that appears on other radio displayswhen someone wants to make a direct call to you.When no nickname is set, the unit number appears.1) Press and hold menu/grp for 2 seconds, thentap menu/grp four times until the radio displaysn - - - - (or your current nickname) with the firstplace in the nickname flashing.2) Press ▲or ▼to select the letter, then tone toadvance to the next letter until you have enteredyour nickname.3) Press menu/grp to confirm the setting and exitthe group settings menu.Using Group ModeGroup mode lets you make direct calls to otherpeople in your group without alerting the entiregroup and also lets you quickly change everyone inyour group to another channel from a single radio.Before using group mode, follow the instructions in"Setting Up Group Mode" on every radio in yourgroup. Then, to record the unit ID and everyone’snickname in every radio, send a call to "All" fromeach radio one time (see "Sending a Direct Call").Sending a Direct CallDirect Call lets you call everyone in your group atonce, or call a single person in your group withoutanyone else in the group knowing. It is like a"speed dial" directly to the person(s) you want totalk to.To call everyone in your group, press d-call ingroup mode. The radio flashes ALL. Then, press d-call again. Everyone in your group receives a call"chirp" for about 5 seconds. When the chirp ends,begin your conversation.Note: When you make a direct call to "all," yourradio also sends out your nickname or ID so that itwill show up in the call list for everyone in yourgroup.To call one person in your group, without havingother people know, press d-call in group mode.Then, use ▲or ▼to select the person you want tocall and press d-call again. Your radio soundstones for 10 seconds as it sends the call. When thetones end, you can begin your conversation. Youcan silence the call tones at any time by pressingPTT.Your conversation remains private between you andthe person you called until 15 seconds after yourlast transmission. Then, your radio automaticallyexits private mode.Automatically Changing ChannelsAuto Channel Change lets you easily coordinate achannel change for everyone in your group. Youmight want to do this when you find you are gettinga lot of interference on your current channel. Or,you can use this feature to change from a low-power channel (8-14) to one of the high-poweredchannels (1-7, 15-22) if you need more range (or toa low-power channel if you need longer batterylife).To start an auto channel change, on any radio inthe group tap tone. The current channel and CHCXappears. Use ▲or ▼to select the target channel.You can check whether the selected channel isbusy. Then press d-call.Your radio chirps for about 10 seconds while itsends out the channel change signal. As eachradio receives the channel change signal, it chirpsonce, then changes to the new channel.To ensure all radios make it to the new channel, werecommend you:•Make sure you are in an open environment,where the radio will get the best range.•Optimize range during the channel changecommand by raising the radio over your head togive the best possible height.•Do a "roll call" on the new channel after themove to be sure no one was left behind. If youmissed someone, return to the previous channeland issue the command again.USING THE RADIO IN STANDARD MODEUse the radio in standard (not group) mode whenyou need to be able to communicate with radiosthat do not have the group feature.Choosing a Privacy CodeYou can select a Privacy Code from 1-142 for eachchannel. oFF (OFF) indicates no Privacy codeselected and your radio can receive a signalregardless of the code settings of the transmittingradio.1) Press tone/scn. The Privacy code indicatorflashes.2) Press ▲or ▼to increase or decrease thecode. You can also select oFF.3) Press tone/scn again.Note: Only tones 1-38 are standard across radiobrands. Other settings might differ from brand tobrand. See the specifications for the specific tonesused for each setting.Channel Scan FeatureYour GMR1588-2CK/GMR1595-2CK radio has achannel scan feature that lets you easily scan all22 channels. When an active channel is detected,the radio pauses on that channel until the channelis clear. Then after a 2-second delay, the radioresumes scanning. Pressing PTT while the scan ispaused on a channel lets you transmit on thatchannel.To turn on channel scan:Press and hold tone/scn until SCAN appears. Thechannel number changes as the radio rapidlycycles through the channels.To turn off channel scan:Press d-call, PTT, Power boost, wx/alert ormenu/grp, or press and hold tone/scn for 2seconds.Talking on Your RadioTo talk to others using the radio:1) Press and hold PTT and speak in a clear,normal voice about 2-3 inches away from themicrophone. While you transmit, TXHI or TXLOappears on the display according to the type ofchannel. To avoid cutting off the first part of yourtransmission, pause slightly after pressing PTTbefore you start talking.2) When you finish speaking, release PTT.You cannow receive incoming calls. While receiving, rxappears on the display.Note: When you press Power boost, boost and rxappear on the display. The radio transmits atmaximum power when a GMRS channel isselected. If Power boost is continuously pressed, 1 minute after you start pressing Power boost thetransmission stops and you hear a boost timeouterror tone.Monitor Mode FeatureYour GMR1588-2CK/GMR1595-2CK radio lets youlisten for weak signals on the current channel at thepress of a key.To turn on the Monitor Mode:•For brief listening, press mon.MON appearsand rx icon flashes.•Press and hold mon for 2 seconds until twobeeps sound for continuous listening. Thereceiver circuit stays open, so you hear both thenoise and weak signals.To turn off Monitor Mode:Press mon to return to the previous mode. Themon and rx icons disappear.Navigating through the Normal MenuTo access the advanced features of the GMR1588-2CK/GMR1595-2CK, your radio has a Menufunction.1) To enter the menu, press menu/grp.2) Additional presses of menu/grp advances youthrough the menu. After the last menu item, theradio exits to the previous mode.3) Other ways to exit the Menu function are:a. Press PTT, Power boost, mon, d-call,wx/alert, or tone/scan.b. Wait 10 seconds until the radio automaticallyreturns to previous mode.Setting ScrambleScramble allows you to make a privateconversation. No one listening to your conversationcan understand what you are talking about. Be surethat the person you are calling also sets their radioto the scramble feature.To set Scramble:1) Enter the menu. SCRM appears and the currentsetting flashes.2) Select on (ON) using ▲or ▼.Note: You can only communicate using scramblebetween two compatible Uniden radios.Voice Operated TransmissionYour GMR1588-2CK/GMR1595-2CK radio has auser selectable Voice Operated Transmitter (VOX)that can be used for automatic voice transmissions.The VOX feature is designed to be used with aheadset with a microphone. Transmission is startswhen you speak into the microphone instead ofpushing the PTT and Power boost button.To select the VOX level:1) Enter the menu. Advance through the menu untilVOX appears. The current level (OFF, 1-5)flashes. Level oF (OFF) disables VOX, whilelevels 1-5 set the sensitivity of the VOX circuit.2) Press either ▲or ▼to set the desired VOXsensitivity level. Use level 1 for increasedsensitivity to voice in normally quietenvironments, and use a higher level to reduceundesired activation in very noisy environments.Transmitting a Call ToneYour GMR1588-2CK/GMR1595-2CK radio isequipped with 10 selectable call tones that aretransmitted when you press d-call in normal mode.To select a call tone:1) Enter the menu. Advance through the menu untilCALL appears. The current call tone number (1-10) flashes.2) Press ▲or ▼to increase or decrease thenumber to the desired call tone. Each tone willbe heard through the speaker.To transmit the selected call tone, press d-call. Theselected tone is transmitted for a fixed length oftime. The iconappears.2) When the unit receives a warning signal, itbeeps for 5 seconds. The  icon, WXand channel indicator blinks.3) To turn off Weather Alert, press and holdwx/alert. The icon disappears.•When Weather Alert is activated, the highestpriority is given to this function. It checks theweather alert signals every 7 seconds.
