5InstallationCaution: The POLARIS will only operate with nominal 12 volt negativeground battery system.It is important to carefully determine the most suitable location for yourPOLARIS on your vessel. Electrical, mechanical, and environmentalconsiderations must all be taken into account. You should select theoptimum relationship among these considerations.Keep in mind the flexibility designed into the POLARIS so that you canmost conveniently use your radio. Features which should be consideredare:1. The universal mounting bracket may be installed on either the topor bottom of a shelf, on a bulkhead, or for overhead mounting.2. The REMOTE speaker jack can be used with an auxiliaryspeaker.3. All connections are "plug-in" type for easy removal of the radio.4. Front fire internal speaker allows convenient in-dash mountingusing the optional bracket.Choosing a LocationSome important factors to consider in selecting the location you’re yourPOLARIS.1. Select a location that is free from spray and splash.2. Keep the battery leads as short as possible. Direct connection tothe battery is most desirable. If direct connection can not bemade with the supplied power lead, any extension should bemade with #10 AWG wire. Long extensions should use largergauge wire.3. Keep the antenna lead as short as possible. Long antenna leadscan cause substantial loss of performance for both receiving andtransmitting.4. Locate your antenna as high as possible and clear from metalobject. The reliable range of coverage is a direct function of theantenna height.5. Select a location that does not allow the radio to be subjected todirect sunlight (including that coming through windows.)6. Select a location that allows free air flow around the heat sink onthe rear of the radio.7. Select a location well away from the ship’s compass. 6Engine Noise SuppressionInterference from the impulse noise generated by the electrical systemsof engines is sometimes a problem with radios The POLARIS has beendesigned to be essentially impervious to ignition impulse noise andalternator noise. However, in some installations it may be necessary totake measures to further reduce the effect of noise interference. All DCbattery wires, antenna lead, and accessory cables should be routedaway from the engine and engine compartment, and from power cablingcarrying high currents.In severe cases of impulse noise interference, it may be necessary toinstall a noise suppression kit. Contact your Uniden Dealer for moreinformation.Antenna ConsiderationsA variety of antennas are available from a number of quality suppliers. It is recommended you draw upon the advice of your Uniden dealer indetermining a suitable antenna for your vessel and range requirements.In general, communication range is increased by using a high-gainantenna placed as high as possible above the water line. 7Installing the POLARISAfter you have carefully considered the various factors affecting yourchoice of location, position the radio (with the bracket, microphone,power cord, antenna and any auxiliary cables installed) into the selectedlocation to assure there is no interference with the surrounding items. Mark the location of the mounting bracket. Remove the bracket from theradio and use it as a template to mark the holes to be drilled for themounting hardware. Drill the holes and mount the bracket withhardware compatible with the material of the mounting surface.Note: This HEXAGON HEAD BOLT isonly for mounting the bracketwith hardware. Do not use it forinstalling the radio in themounting bracket.Connect the red wire of the supplied power cord to the positive (+)battery supply. Connect the black wire of the power cord to ground.The power cord is equipped with a fuse to protect the radio. Use only aSix (6) Ampere fast blow fuse for replacement. Connect the power cordto the keyed connector on the power "pigtail".Connect the antenna and all other auxiliary cables and accessories.Install the radio in the mounting bracket and connect all cables andaccessories to the appropriate jacks and connectors.Note: Do not use any other mountingknobs than the ones enclosed.Do not insert the knobs withoutattaching the bracket.UT888ZL (POLARIS)-0708 7/8/02 8:13 PM Page 7
8Power On/Off1. Turn the unit on by rotating thePOWER/VOLUME control clockwise.Adjust volume to a comfortable level.Note: You must select a channel whichis not in use before setting theSQUELCH control on your radio.2. Think of the Squelch control as agate. If you turn SQUELCH fullyclockwise it raises the "SquelchGate" so high that no signals getthrough.3. If you turn SQUELCH fullycounterclockwise it lowers the"Squelch Gate" so that everythinggets through – noise, weak signals,and strong signals.4. To set the "Squelch Gate" to desiredlevel, turn SQUELCHcounterclockwise until you hearnoise. Then turn SWUELCH backclockwise just until the noise stops.Now only strong signals get through. 9Triple WatchTriple Watch monitors Channel 16 and Channel 9 for activity every twoseconds while scanning or monitoring.To activate Triple Watch, press 16/9/TRI key for 2 seconds. The "TRI "icon appears on the LCD panel, indicating Triple Watch mode is effect. Ifa signal is received on either Channel 16 or Channel 9, the radioremains on that channel unit the signal ends.Press and hold 16/9/TRI key for 2 seconds to cancel Triple Watch ModeNote: Rewriting of priority CH cannot be performed.It is set to Triple watch which receives 16CH, 9CH, and CurrentCH when a signal is in Current CH. It is set to Dual watchwhich receives 9CH and 16CH when a signal is in 9CH.When a signal is in 16CH, it stops at this CH, and gives priorityand receives.If Triple watch is in WX mode, Triple watch will start with WXmode.If 16/9/TRI key is pressed for 2 seconds in scan mode, normalscan and Triple watch scan will change.If user presses 16/9/TRI key in Triple watch mode, Triple watchwill be interrupted temporarily and it will be set to PRI 16CH. Ifuser presses 16/9/TRI key once again, it will be set to PRI9CH, and Triple watch will be resumed if user presses 16/9/TRIkey once again.Triple watch is not turned on or turned off while WX ALERTbeep is sounding, or while receiving WX ALERT CH, even ifuser presses 16/9/TRI key for 2 seconds.Manual Tuning (scan mode?)To manually select a channel, rotate the channel knob (push-select)clockwise to increase the number or counterclockwise to decrease thenumber and select the desired channel. 10Instant Channel 16/Channel 9 CommunicationsTo access instant Channel 16 or Channel 9 communications, press16/9/TRI. This overrides the channel selected wit the Channel up/downselector button or any scanning activity. The Channel Display indicatesthe unit is Channel 16. Press 16/9/TRI again to access Channel 9communications. Press and release 16/9/TRI a third time to release theswitch (Off). The transceiver will return to the channel selected prior toaccessing instant Channel 16/Channel 9 commnunications. TheChannel Display will indicate the selected channel.To cancel Channel 16/Channel 9 communications:●Press 16/9/TRI until previous channel setting appears.--or--●Press WX ALERT.Weather ScanTo scan only Weather Channels 0-9, press WX/ALERT, and then theradio will go to the last selected weather channel. Press Up Key andDown Key on the microphone to select a different weather channel.To exit from weather channel: ●Press WX/ALERT key. The radio returns to the previous MRNchannel it.MEM (Entering channel numbers into Memory Scan)You can enter the channels into Memory Scan for instant scanning atany time. When a channel is selected for Memory Scan, the MEMindicator will appear on the LCD display.To enter a channel number into Memory Scan, select the channelnumber you want to store by rotating the PUSH-SELECT knob, and thenpress SCAN/MEM for 2 seconds at the channel which is not stored inthe memory scan channels, the channel is stored as a channel ofmemory scan and MEM icon appear. 11When SCAN/MEM key is pressed for 2 seconds at the channel which isstored once in the memory scan channels once, the stored channel iscanceled and MEM icon disappears.NOTE:Memory channel can be set up by MODE of USA, INT, and CAN.This function in WX mode is in valid. If [SCAN/MEM] key is pressed for 2 seconds while staying at thechannel which is in the scan mode, Triple watch scan mode and Triplewatch mode, On/Off of memory channel will be performed.It is not possible to cancel all memory channels at the same time.Memory Scan:To scan channels stored in Memory Scan, press SCAN/MEM. In theMemory Scan Mode, the POLARIS scans channel numbers previouslyentered into Memory Scan. If no channel has been entered into MemoryScan, an error tone sounds and the LCD Panel does not change.Hail:To access the Hail Mode, press HAIL on the microphone. The HA iconappear in the display. Press PTT switch on the microphone , hold themicrophone approximately two inches from your mouth, and speakclearly in a normal voice. To cancel HA, press HAIL on the microphone.Weather Alert:The Weather Alert Mode can be activated to alert you of dangerousweather. When weather Alert is turned on, and a warning signal isreceived, a siren will sound at full volume, regardless of the volumesetting. When the signal stops, you will hear the active weather channelbroadcast t normal volume. The ALT icon indicates the Weather Alert Mode is activated. 13TransmittingThe Polaris transmits on 57 marine frequencies and receives 80different marine frequencies. Certain channels – the weather channels.Channel 70 of both the USA and International frequencies, and channel15, 81, and 83 of the ISA frequencies – are received only. Your radiowill transmit on these channels. For your reference, a listing of all theavailable marine channel is printed on the back cover foldout.Setting TX Output Caution: It is important to remember use the LO position in port or forshort range communications.1. When you turn the Polaris on, theunit is automatically set to transmit at25 watts.2. Press H/L/MENU, to change thetransmitter output to 1W.3. 14Transmitter Time-Out Optional Accessories1. Digital Selective Calling (DSC)Digital Selective Calling is a semi-automated method of establishing aradio call, it has been designated by the International MaritimeOrganization (IMO) as an international standard for establishing VHF,MF and HF radio calls. It has also been designated as part of theGlobal Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS). It is plannedthat DSC will eventually replace aural watches distress frequencies andwill be used to announce routine and urgent maritime safety informationbroadcasts.This new service will allow mariners to instantly send a distress call withGPS position (when connected to the transceiver) to the US CoastGuard and other vessel within range of the transmission. DSC will alsoallow mariners to initiate or receive distress, urgency, safety and routinecalls to or from another vessel equipped with a DSC transceiver.1. Press the Menu key when it is theChannel display mode, and thefollowing screen appears.2. Press the PUSH/SELECT knob tochoose DSC CALL to DSC CALL SYSTEM SETUP REV.CH.MEM EXITDimming the LCD Display BacklightWhen the Polaris is turned on, the LCD Panel will be brightest. 1. 195. When an individual DSC call isreceived, the radio will respond withthe UNATTENDED message whenan operator cannot answer to thecaller. The DSC call will be loggedinto the radio’s call waiting directory. Note: If you press any key on the radio or the PTT key, this featurewill be cancelled.1-F. CALLWAITThe DSC Call Waiting directory logs 10 received distress calls, and logs20 individual calls that are received and not answered within 5 minutesor while the radio is set on the DSC Standby function. Calls will belogged while busy with other communications as long as the transmitteris not keyed at the time of the call. If the call is answered within 5minutes the call will not be logged. 48Your Polaris is a precision of electronic equipment and you should treatit accordingly. Due to the rugged design, very little maintenance isrequired. However, a few precautions should be observed:•If your radio has been accidentally subjected to spray or splash,you should immediately wipe it down with a soft cloth dampenedwith fresh water. •If the antenna has been damaged, you should not transmitexcept in the case of an emergency.
