Getting StartedMounting the Drop-in ChargerMount the drop-incharger to either acounter or wall.Plug one end of the AC adapter into thewall outlet and the other end into the drop-in charger.The exclamation point within an equilateral triangle is intendedto alert the user to the presence of important operating and maintenance (servicing) instructions in the literatureaccompanying the appliance.Attaching the AntennaAttach the antenna to the VOYAGER. Charging the Battery PackYour marine radio is powered by a specially designed Lithium Ionbattery pack.•Before operating the VOYAGER, charge the Lithium Ion batterypack for 15 hours without interruption in the drop-in charger.Place the VOYAGER in the drop-in charger.The red LED lights and stays on.•The charger won’t overcharge the battery pack.•Do not transmit when the VOYAGER is in the drop-in charger!•You can monitor incoming calls while the VOYAGER is in thedrop-in charger.•You can charge the battery pack alone or connected to the VOYAGER.•Periodically, the Li-ion battery should be fully drained prior to recharging.2110VOYAGER.QX  8/20/2 11:22 AM  Page 10
Operation•When you press any key (except PTT), a short tone sounds.•When you turn on your VOYAGER, it is automatically tuned tochannel 16, the United States Coast Guard frequency for distress, safety, and calling.•See the foldout in the front of the operating guide for button,knob, and key positions.Turning on the Unit and Setting SquelchBefore you turn on the unit, turn theSquelch knob fully counterclockwise.Then, turn on the unit by turning theVolume/Power knob clockwise until youhear a hissing sound.Turn the Squelch knob clockwise, just untilthe hissing sound stops. Use the knob toadjust to the desired squelch level. Think ofthe squelch control as a frequency gatewhich controls access to weak or strongsignals depending on its setting.•To listen to a weak or distant station, turn the knob counterclockwise. Monitoring Weather ChannelsThe VOYAGER has 10 preprogrammed weather channel frequencies, represented by 0 through 9.To listen to the weather channels in yourarea, press WX/ALERT. WX appears on the display.To move up, press the ▲button.To move down, press the ▼button.To exit, press WX/ALERT. Triple WatchTriple Watch mode monitors channels 16 and 9 for a signal whileyou listen to the currently selected channel. The marine radiochecks channel 16 and 9 for activity every 2 seconds.To select Triple Watch mode, press andhold the 16/9/TRI button for 2 seconds.A double confirmation tone sounds.To exit from Triple Watch, press andhold 16/9/TRI for 2 seconds. A doubleconfirmation tone sounds.•While in Triple Watch mode, you canchange the currently selected channelusing the ▲or ▼button.•A momentary press of the 16/9/TRIbutton interrupts Triple Watch mode and remains on 16, or on channel 9 ifyou press once more. Weather AlertWeather Alert allows your VOYAGER to function as a severeweather warning radio. If the NOAA issues a severe weather warning while the Weather Alert is turned on, the VOYAGERsounds an alert tone. You will then hear the emergency weatherbroadcast.To use Weather Alert, select the weather channel in your area.Press and hold WX/ALERT for 2 seconds. A double confirmation tone sounds.When the unit receives a warning signal,it beeps for 5 seconds. WX, ALERT, andthe channel number blink to receive theemergency weather broadcast.To turn off Weather Alert, press and holdWX/ALERT for 2 seconds. A double confirmation tone sounds.•When Weather Alert is activated, the highest priority is giventhis function. NWR-SAME AlertIn addition to the conventional Weather Alert, your VOYAGER iscompatible with NWR-SAME Weather Alert.Specific Area Message Encoding (S.A.M.E.) are NOAA’s codedemergency weather signals that identify a specific geographic areaaffected by an emergency. The VOYAGER receives the emergencyweather alert.The unit changes its alert beep tone according to the level of severity.To use NWR-SAME Alert, select the weather channel in yourarea.Press and hold the WX/ALERT button for 2 seconds to activatethis feature.When the unit receives a warning signal,it sounds a tone defined by severity. WXand ALERT start blinking. Registering FIPS CodeSix digit FIPS Codes are programmable in 15 channels, Number1~15 for NWR-SAME Weather Alert. Contact the National WeatherService at 1-888-NWR-SAME for the FIPS Codes in the area ofinterest, or visit www.noaa.gov/nwr/indexnw.htm Press and hold the MEM key for 2 seconds.Select the channel, numbers 1~15, youwant to program using the ▲or ▼key.Press the MEM key to enter the FIPSCode edit mode.To enter the first digit of the code, changethe left blinking digit on the display usingthe ▲or ▼key and press the MEM key.The right digit starts to blink.To enter the second digit of the code,change the right blinking digit on the display using the ▲or ▼key and press the MEM key. The entered digit moves to the left andthe right digit starts to blink.Repeat step 5 for the remaining digits of the code.After the last digit registers, the entered code appears on thedisplay automatically for confirmation.To exit from this mode, press and hold the MEM key for 2 seconds.Press U/I/C to clear the stored FIPS Code in the displayed location.•Pressing the MEM key for more than 2 second in the middle ofthe above steps prevents registration.98765432117VOYAGER.QX  8/20/2 11:22 AM  Page 17
USA, International and Canadian ChannelsThe VOYAGER is initially set for USAmarine channels when you turn on your radio.To listen to international marine channels, press UIC once.To listen to Canadian marine channels,press UIC again.The radio will keep the last mode settingthat was selected when turned back on.•For USA, international and Canadianmarine channels and functions, refer tothe tables starting on page 22.Programming a Channel into MemoryBefore using the scanning feature, you have to program channelsinto memory.Select the channel to enter into memoryby pressing the ▲or ▼button.Press the MEM button to store the channel. Deleting a Channel from MemorySelect the channel to delete from memory by pressing the ▲or ▼button.Press the MEM button. MEM disappears from the display.ScanningTo begin scanning the programmedchannels, press the SCAN button. SCANand TRIPLE appear on the display.To stop scanning, press the SCANbutton once more. SCAN and TRIPLEdisappear from the display.•  Scanning starts from the lowest to highest channel and stopswhen it finds an active channel. It remains on that channel untilthe transmission ends, then resumes scanning after a 3 seconddelay period.•When in the scan mode, the unit automatically activates theTriple Watch feature. TransmittingTransmission power can be set to either5W or 1W. Press the 1W/5W button to make thechange, then the 5W or the 1W indicatoron the display changes accordingly.To transmit, press and hold the PTT key. TX appears on the display.To return to receive, release the PTT key. TX disappears from the display.•If the PTT key is pressed for more than 5 seconds, TX startsblinking and the transmission ends. The TX time out tone willsound until the PTT key is released.•If the battery indicator drops to the 1-mark level on the display,when the PTT key is pressed, the radio will not transmit and theTX icon starts blinking. (Refer to the description of the Battery Indicator on the nextpage.)Lighted Keys and DisplayTo light the display, press any key or any other key excluding theTX key.•If you press any button other than the Light/Lock key while thedisplay and keypad are lit, it remains in the lit status for another 5 seconds.32120VOYAGER.QX  8/20/2 11:22 AM  Page 20
Battery IndicatorWhen the unit is on, battery power is always indicated on the display.When the battery is fully charged, the batteryindicator appears as follows:When the battery is nearly discharged, thebattery indicator appears as follows:•When the battery indicator drops to the 1-mark level on the display, the radio willreceive but will not transmit.Key LockTo prevent accidental entries, you can lock the keypad.Press and hold the Lock key for 1.5 seconds. The unit will beeptwo times to confirm that the keypad is locked with LOCKindication on the display.To unlock the keypad, press and hold the Lock key again for1.5 seconds.
