Choosing a ChannelYour radio has 22 channels and 38 CTCSS codesyou can use to talk to others.In order to speak tosomeone, each of you must be set to the samechannel and CTCSS code.To choose a channel:With the radio in "Normal" operating mode pressthe channel/scan ▲or ▼key to increase ordecrease the channel number displayed.Choosing a CTCSS CodeEach of the channels 1-22 may have any one ofthe codes, OFF or 1-38 selected.Code "OFF" indicates no CTCSS code selected and your radiocan receive a signal regardless of the code settingsof the transmitting radio.1) Enter the Menu.The CTCSS code on the LCDdisplay will flash.2) Press the channel/scan ▲or ▼key toincrease or decrease the code number displayed.You can also select “OFF”at thisstage.3) Exit the Menu to return to “Normal” mode.Talking on Your RadioTo talk to others using the radio:1) Press and hold the PTT button and speak in aclear, normal voice about 2-3 inches away fromthe microphone.While you are transmitting, theicon will appear on the display.To avoid cutting off the first part of your transmission,pause slightly after pressing the PTT buttonbefore you start talking.2) When you are finished speaking, release the PTTbutton.You can now receive incoming calls.Whilereceiving, the icon will appear on the display.Voice Operated TransmissionYour GMRS680 radio is equipped with a user selectable Voice Operated Transmitter (VOX) thatcan be used for automatic voice transmissions.TheVOX feature is designed to be used with a headsetwith a microphone.Transmission is initiated byspeaking into the remote microphone instead ofpushing the PTT button.To select the VOX level:1) Enter the Menu.Advance through the Menu untilthe vox icon appears on the display.The currentlevel (off, 1-3) will be indicated.Level “oF”disables VOX, while levels - set the sensitivity of the VOX circuit.GMRS680*Range may vary depending in environmental and/or topographical conditions.• 8 GMRS / 14 FRS Channels• 38 CTCSS Codes• Up to 5 Mile Range*• Internal VOX Circuitry• 5 Selectable Call Tone Alerts• Backlit LCD Display• Optional Headset Accessories• Headset Jack• Battery Recharge Circuit• Optional NiMH Battery Pack and Charger1 Antenna2 PTT (Push-To-Talk) Button3 Channel/Scan Up Key4 Call Key5 Channel/Scan Down Key6 Sel/ Key7 Speaker8 Mon Key9 Volume Up Key10 Volume Down Key11 Battery Level Meter12 Receive Indicator13 Scan Indicator14 Channel Indicator15 Call Indicator16 VOX Indicator17 Keypad Lock Indicator18 Transmit Indicator19 Volume Setting Indicator20 CTCSS IndicatorCongratulations on your purchase of the UnidenGMRS680 (General Mobile Radio Service) radio.This product is a lightweight, palm-sized radio.Use it at sporting events to stay in contact withfamily and friends, hiking, skiing, outdoors, or in a neighborhood watch for vital communication.This compact, state-of-the-art device is equippedwith many features.OPTIONAL ACCESSORIESYour package contains the GMRS680 radio, this reference guide, including a product registrationcard.You may operate the unit using 4 AAA alkalinebatteries or the rechargeable NiMH battery pack(not included).The following optional accessoriesmay be purchased from your participating Unidendealer or call1-800-554-3988 or visit us on the webat www.uniden.com. If you have any questions youcan contact the FCC direct at 1-888-225-5322.INSTALL THE BATTERIESYour GMRS680 radio uses 4 AAA alkaline batteriesor the optional NiMH battery pack (not included).If alkaline batteries are used, we recommend usinghigh quality alkaline batteries.To install the 4 AAA alkaline batteries:1) Make sure your radio is OFF.2) Remove the battery compartment door by pressing the tab at the bottom of the compartment door allowing the door to beremoved.3) Install 4 AAA alkaline batteries (not included)into the battery compartment. Be certain to follow the + and – symbols in the compartment.Installing the batteries incorrectly will prevent theunit from operating.4) Replace the battery compartment door.USING THE RADIOIn order to get the most out of your new radio, readthis reference guide completely before attempting tooperate the unit.Turning the Radio On and Adjusting the Volume1) Press and hold the sel/ key to turn the unitON, and increase the speaker volume by pressing the volume ▲key.To decrease the volume, press the volume ▼key.2) Press and hold the sel/ key again to turn theunit OFF.Adjusting the Sound (Key Beeps)Your radio emits a beep each time one of the buttons or keys (except for the PTT button and callkey) are pressed.To turn this sound OFF, press andhold call while turning ON the radio.Repeat thisstep to turn the sound ON.Navigating through the MenuTo access the advanced features of the GMRS680,your radio has a Menu function. • Battery Level Meter• Channel Monitor• Channel Scan• Keypad LockBATTERY LEVEL ANDLOW BATTERY ALERTThis unit has a battery level meter on the display toindicate the status of the batteries.When the batteries in the unit are low, the battery level metericon will flash.Replace the alkaline batteries immediately or if you are using the NiMHbattery pack, you must recharge the batteries inorder to continue using the radio.Warning! To avoid the risk of personal injury orproperty damage from fire or electrical shock, onlyuse the Uniden accessories specifically designatedfor this product.1) To enter the Menu, press the sel/ key.2) Additional presses of the sel/ key willadvance you through the Menu until exiting to"Normal" operating mode.3) Other methods of exiting the Menu function are:a.Press and hold the sel/ key again.b.Press PTT, mon, volume ▲/▼, and call.c.Wait 10 seconds until the unit automaticallyreturns to “Normal”mode.2) Press either the channel/scan ▲or ▼key tothe desired VOX sensitivity level.Use level 1 forincreased sensitivity to voice in normally quiet environments, and use a higher level to reduceundesired activation in very noisy environments.3) Exit the Menu.Transmitting a Call ToneYour GMRS680 radio is equipped with 5 selectablecall tones that will be transmitted when the call keyis pressed.To select a call tone:1) Enter the Menu.Advance through the Menu untilthe call icon is shown on the display.The current call tone number ( - ) will be indicated.2) Press the channel/scan ▲or ▼key toincrease or decrease the number to the desiredcall tone.Each tone will be heard through thespeaker.3) Exit the Menu.To transmit the selected call tone, press the callkey.The selected tone will automatically be transmitted for a fixed length of time.Channel Scan FeatureYour GMRS680 radio has a channel Scan featurethat allows you to easily Scan all 22 channels.When an active channel is detected, the unit willpause on that channel until the channel is clear.Then after a 2 second delay, the unit will continuescanning. Pressing PTT while the Scan is pausedon a channel will allow you to transmit on thatchannel.To turn ON channel scanning:Press and hold either the channel/scan ▲or ▼key until the scan icon is displayed.The channelnumber on the display will change as the radio rapidly cycles through the channels.To turn OFF channel scanning:Press sel/ ,call, or PTT.Normal NormalCTCSS VOX Level Call Tone Key Lock1-5off, 1-38 off, 1-3ON-OFFGMRS680 RADIOKeypad LockTo Lock the keypad:1) Enter the Menu.Advance through the Menu untilthe icon appears on the display.The currentkey Lock status (OFF) blinks on the display.2) To switch the key Lock mode from OFF to ON,press the channel/scan ▲key.3) To confirm the setting, press the sel/ key.Theradio returns to the "Normal" mode.Note: If you exit the setting mode before confirmingyour selection by pressing the sel/ key, the keyLock setting will be set to OFF.To Unlock the keypad:1) Press and hold the sel/ key to turn the unitOFF.2) Press and hold the sel/ key again to turn theunit ON.The keypad is unlocked.Automatic Power Save FeatureYour GMRS680 radio has a unique circuit designedto dramatically extend the life of the batteries.If there is no transmission nor an incoming callwithin 3 seconds, your radio switches to the PowerSave mode.The radio is still able to receive transmissions in this mode.LCD BacklightThe LCD backlight will automatically turn ON whenany key (except PTT button) is pressed.The LCDdisplay will illuminate for 10 seconds before turningOFF.Monitor Mode FeatureYour GMRS680 radio allows you to listen for weaksignals on the current channel at the press of a key.To turn ON the monitor mode:•Press mon for brief listening, the icon willblink.•Press and hold mon for 2 seconds for continuous listening.The receiver circuit will stayopen, and letting in both the noise & weak signals.To turn OFF monitor mode:•Press mon to return to "Normal" mode, and theicon stops blinking.GNRS680-01/22 1/22/03 4:22 PM Page 1
