Choosing a ChannelYour radio has 22 channels you can use to talk toothers. In order to speak to someone, each of youmust be set to the same channel.To choose a channel:With the radio in "Normal" operating mode pressthe ch/scan ▲or ▼key to increase or decreasethe channel number displayed.Note: FRS Channels 8-14 have an expectancyrange of up to 2 miles. GMRS channels 1-7, 15-22have an expectancy range of up to 8 miles bypressing the Power boost key.Talking on Your RadioTo talk to others using the radio:1) Press and hold the PTT button and speak in aclear, normal voice about 2-3 inches away fromthe microphone. While you are transmitting, theicon will appear on the display. To avoid cutting off the first part of your transmission,pause slightly after pressing the PTT buttonbefore you start talking.2) When you are finished speaking, release the PTTbutton. You can now receive incoming calls. Whilereceiving, the  icon will appear on the display.Note: When you press the Power boost key,boost and icon appear on the display. Theradio will transmit Maximum power when a GMRSchannel is selected. If youhave any questions you can contact the FCCdirect at 1-888-225-5322.INSTALL THE BATTERIESYour GMR855-2/GMR855-2CK radio uses 4 AAAalkaline batteries or NiMH battery pack (included inGMR855-2CK only). If alkaline batteries are used,we recommend using high quality alkaline batteries.To install the 4 AAA alkaline batteries:1) Make sure your radio is OFF.2) Remove the battery compartment door by pressing the tab at the bottom of the compartment door allowing the door to beremoved.3) Install 4 AAA alkaline batteries (not included)into the battery compartment. Be certain to follow the + and – symbols in the compartment.Installing the batteries incorrectly will prevent theunit from operating.4) Replace the battery compartment door.USING THE RADIOIn order to get the most out of your new radio, readthis reference guide completely before attempting tooperate the unit.Turning the Radio On and Adjusting the Volume1) Press and hold the sel/ key to turn the unitON, and increase the speaker volume by pressing the volume ▲key. To decrease the volume, press the volume ▼key.2) Press and hold the sel/ key again to turn theunit OFF.Adjusting the Sound (Key Beeps)Your radio emits a beep each time one of the buttons or keys (except for the PTT button, Powerboost and call key) are pressed. To turn this soundOFF, press and hold call key while turning ON theradio. Repeat this step to turn the sound ON.•  Battery Level Meter•  Channel Monitor•  Channel Scan•  Keypad Lock•  Belt Clip•  NiMH Battery Pack and Charger (GMR855-2CK only)BATTERY LEVEL ANDLOW BATTERY ALERTThis unit has a battery level meter on the display toindicate the status of the batteries. When the batteries in the unit are very low, the battery levelmeter icon  will flash. Replace the alkaline batteries immediately or if you are using the NiMHbattery pack, you must recharge the batteries inorder to continue using the radio.Warning! To avoid the risk of personal injury orproperty damage from fire or electrical shock, onlyuse the Uniden accessories specifically designatedfor this product.1) To enter the Menu, press the sel/ key.2) Additional presses of the sel/ key willadvance you through the Menu until exiting to"Normal" operating mode.3) Other methods of exiting the Menu function are:a. Press and hold the sel/ key again.b. Press the PTT button, Power boost, mon, volume ▲/▼, and call key.c. Wait 10 seconds until the unit automaticallyreturns to “Normal”mode.Transmitting a Call ToneYour GMR855-2/GMR855-2CK radio is equippedwith 5 selectable call tones that will be transmittedwhen the call key is pressed.To select a call tone:1) Enter the Menu. Advance through the Menu untilthe call icon is shown on the display. The current call tone number ( - ) will be indicated.2) Press the ch/scan ▲or ▼key to increase ordecrease the number to the desired call tone.Each tone will be heard through the speaker.3) Exit the Menu.To transmit the selected call tone, press the callkey. The selected tone will automatically be transmitted for a fixed length of time.Keypad LockTo Lock the keypad:1) Enter the Menu. Advance through the Menu untilthe  icon appears on the display. The currentkey Lock status (OFF) blinks on the display.2) To switch the key Lock mode from OFF to ON,press the ch/scan ▲key.3) To confirm the setting, press the sel/ key. Theradio returns to the "Normal" mode.Note: If you exit the setting mode before confirmingyour selection by pressing the sel/ key, the keyLock setting will be set to OFF.To Unlock the keypad:1) Press and hold the sel/ key to turn the unitOFF.2) Press and hold the sel/ key again to turn theunit ON. The keypad is unlocked.Channel Scan FeatureYour GMR855-2/GMR855-2CK radio has a channelScan feature that allows you to easily Scan all 22 channels. When an active channel is detected, theunit will pause on that channel until the channel isclear. Then after a 2 second delay, the unit will continue scanning. Pressing the PTT button orPower boost key while the Scan is paused on achannel will allow you to transmit on that channel.To turn ON channel scanning:Press and hold either the ch/scan ▲or ▼keyuntil the scan icon is displayed. The channel number on the display will change as the radio rapidly cycles through the channels.Normal NormalCall Tone Key Lock1-5ON-OFFGMR855-2/GMR855-2CK RADIOAutomatic Power Save FeatureYour GMR855-2/GMR855-2CK radio has a uniquecircuit designed to dramatically extend the life ofthe batteries.If there is no transmission nor an incoming callwithin 3 seconds, your radio switches to the PowerSave mode. The radio is still able to receive transmissions in this mode.LCD BacklightThe LCD backlight will automatically turn ON whenany key (except for the PTT button and Powerboost key) is pressed. The LCD display will illuminate for 10 seconds before turning OFF.Monitor Mode FeatureYour GMR855-2/GMR855-2CK radio allows you tolisten for weak signals on the current channel at thepress of a key.To turn ON the monitor mode:•Press mon for brief listening, the  icon willblink.•Press and hold mon for 2 seconds for continuous listening. The receiver circuit will stayopen, and letting in both the noise & weak signals.To turn OFF monitor mode:•Press mon to return to "Normal" mode, and theicon stops blinking.Roger BeepRoger Beep is a BEEP that is sent to notify the endof transmission (PTT transmission.) Roger Beepcan be heard through the speaker when Key Beepis on. If key beep is turned off, Roger Beep will notbe heard from the speaker.To turn ON Roger Beep:Press and hold the ch/scan ▲key while turningON the radio.To turn OFF Roger Beep:Press and hold the ch/scan ▲key while turningON the radio.Navigating through the MenuTo access the advanced features of the GMR855-2/GMR855-2CK, your radio has a Menu function.USING THE CHARGING CRADLEIf you use the rechargeable NiMH battery pack, twoGRM855-2CK radios can be charged by using thecharging cradle.Make sure to turn the radio OFF before placingthe radio in the charging cradle. Otherwise thebattery level meter icon won’t indicate properly.1) Connect the AC adapter (# AC6248) to DC IN 9Vjack and to a standard 120V AC wall outlet.2) Set the charging cradle on the desk or tabletop,and place the radio in the charging cradle withthe keypad facing forward.3) Make sure that the LED illuminates.
