DESCRIPTION
Your UNIDEN AX 55 represents the most advanced 5-watt hand-held type radio ever
designed for use in the Citizens Band Radio Service. It will operate on any three of the
40 frequencies designated as citizens band channels by the Federal Communications
Commission. Your Model AX 55 is factory-installed with channel 14 crystals. Addi-
tional crystals may be installed in the open channels.
WARNING
Any adjustments or alterations which would alter the performance of the
transceiver's original F.C.C. Type Acceptance or which would change the
frequency determining method are strictly prohibited.
Operation of this equipment requires a valid station license issued by the
Federal Communications Commission. Do not transmit with your equipment
until you have received your license or without complying with the pro-
cedures explained on F.C.C. temporary license Form 555-B. You may use
Form 555-B as a temporary permit while your regular Form 505 application
is being processed by the F.C.C. Illegal operation can result in severe penal-
ties. Be certain that you have read Part 95 of The Plain English Rules-Citizens
B9nd Radio Service before operating your radio. F.C.C. Forms 505 and 555-B
and a copy of Part 95 of the Commission's Rules are packed with the trans-
ceiver for your convenience. -- -~-
Your Station License is to be posted in accordance with CB Rul.es 34 and 44.
F.C.C. Rules require that All transmitter adjustments other that those
supplied by the manufacturer as front panel operation controls be made by or
under supervision of the holder of an F.C.C. issued 1st or 2nd class radio
operator license.
Replacement or substitution of Crystals, Transistors, IC, Regulator Diodes or
any other part of a unique nature, with parts other than those recommended
by us, may cause violation of the technical regulatons of Part 95 of the F.C.C.
Rules or violation of Type Acceptance requirements of Part 2 of the Rules.
LICENSING PROCEDURES
The Citizens Band (CB) Radio Service is under the jurisdiction of the Federal Com-
munications Commission (F.C.C.) Therefore, the operator of a CB transceiver must be
in possession of a valid FCC permit or license. The steps to legally operate your
UNIDEN transceiver are:
1) For Immediate operation: complete the Form 555-B, Temporary Permit. Keep it
with your unit.
2) FCC Form 505, Application for Class C or D Station License in the Citizens Radio
Service is the document to be completed to obtain your license which is valid for 5
years. Mail the application to the address indicated on the form. DO NOT send it to
UNIDEN Corporation of America.

OPERATING PROCEDURE TO RECEIVE
1. Extend Antenna to its full length and keep in a vertical position.
2. Turn the unit lion" by rotating Volume Control clockwise.
3. Set the Channel Selector to the desired channel.
4. Set the Volume Control to a comfortable listening level.
5. Listen to the background noise from the speaker. Turn the Squelch Control slowly
clockwise until the noise JUST disappears (no signal should be present). Leave the
control at this setting. The Squelch is now properly adjusted. The receiver will
remain quiet unit a signal is actually received. Do not advance the control too far,
or some of the weaker signals will not be heard.
OPERATING PROCEDURE TO TRANSMIT
1. Extend Antenna to its full length and keep in a vertical position.
IMPORTANT: IF THE ANTENNA IS NOT FULLY EXTENDED, THE EF-
FICIENCY OF THE TRANSMITTER IS REDUCED AND THE
POWER AMPLIFIER TRANSISTOR COULD BE DAMAGED.
2. Turn the power lion" by rotating the Volume Control clockwise.
3. Set the Channel Selector to the desired channel.
4. To transmit, press the Talk button. Speak slowly and clearly in normal voice, "2"
to "3" from the Microphone.
5. To receive, release the Talk button.
RANGE
The range of your hand-held transceiver will vary depending on conditions. Factors
such as antenna, terrain and battery charge all affect range. To insure maximum range,
always keep fully charged batteries in the unit. As voltage decreases, it directly affects
range. Though higher in initial cost than other types, Nickel Cadmium Rechargeable
Batteries are recommended. They can be recharged hundreds of times.
CHANGING OR INSTAlliNG NEW CRYSTALS
Your AX 55 comes with Channel 14 installed in Channel 1 position. You can use any
6 channels of the 40 alloted to CB Band. Do not attempt to use non-standard crystals
or to make any internal adjustments to your AX 55. Such is prohibited by the FCC
and result in illegal operation, for which you may be liable and may be fined. There-
fore, replacing and/or installing crystals must be made by or under supervision of the
holder of an FCC issued let or 2nd class radio operator license. Following information
is provided only for such license holders.
1. Remove the rear cover from the transceiver.
2. Insert transmit crystal into the dual pin socket marked TX-2 to TX-6 (see below).
3. Insert receive crystal into the dual pin socket marked RX-2 to RX-6.

NOTE: The crystals installed in channel 1/1" position are also of plug-in type and may
be replaced with those of any other channels.
Make sure the transmit and receive crystals are installed in their correct
socket. If the crystals are reversed, the unit will transmit on one frequency
and recieve on another, both of which will be outside the citizens band,
resulting in illegal operation.
4. Replace the rear cover.

SERVICING YOUR TRANSCEIVER
The technical information, diagrams and charts will be supplied upon request for the
use of a qualified holder of a first or second class radiotelephone license in servicing
this transceiver. It is the user's responsibility to see that this radio is operating at all
times in accordance with the F.C.C. Citizens Radio Service regulations.
If you install your own transceiver, do not attempt to make any transmitter tuning
adjustments as they are prohibited by the F.C.C. unless you hold or are in the presence
and under the supervision of a first or second class radiotelephone licensed person. A
Citizens Band or Amateur license is not surfficient.
Please refer to the WARN ING information contained in the 1st page of your owner's
Guide.
