This newtechnology changes the way you view your PC, TV, and videographics.The RADEON 8500/RADEON 7500 uses HydraVision™software to create a seamless multiple display desktop. Multiplemonitor display works as one large work area. A singleapplication can span all monitors, or many applications canoccupy their own specific monitor. This feature will take yourPC’s graphics and video capabilities to the next level.Connecting your RADEON 8500/RADEON 7500 to yourmonitorsThe RADEON 8500/RADEON 7500 provides support for oneDVI-I monitor or two VGA monitors using the supplied DVI-I-to-VGA adapter. A television can also be used to expand yourdesktop by using the S-Video connector.Plug the monitor cable into your card (if you are runningmultiple monitors, connect their cables to the appropriateconnectors), then turn on the computer and monitor(s).To connect a flat panel to the RADEON 8500/RADEON 7500use the DVI-I connector as shown on the following page. Toconnect a VGA monitor to the DVI-I connector, plug thesupplied DVI-I-to-VGA adapter into the DVI-I connector, thenplug your monitor cable into the adapter.When you use multiple monitors with your RADEON8500/RADEON 7500, one monitor will always be primary. This dialog features agraphic representation of the current monitor array. You canenable and disable monitors by double-clicking on the monitornumber in the list box.Multiple Monitor control for Windows®98SE and Windows®Me is located in the Settings tab of the Display Properties. Fromhere, you can enable/disable multiple displays, change colordepth and screen resolution.

For example, the secondarydisplay can be dragged to the left of the primary display. Thisallows you to position your secondary display to be eitherphysically left or right of the primary display.

Ratiometric expansion (ordigital panel scaling as it is commonly known)expands a low resolution image to fill a higherresolution panel. However, Ratiometric expansion isonly available on the primary display. Therefore, if aDFP is set as secondary, the extended desktop isdisabled and the resolution is less than the DFPmonitor’s native resolution. This causes the DFPmonitor to default to center mode.
RADEON™ 8500/ RADEON 7500™ User’s Guide 9Dynamic Monitor Reassignment Windows®98SE/Windows®Me/Windows®NT4.0/Windows®2000In addition to the fact that you never have to reboot whenenabling and disabling multiple monitor settings, you can alsochange the assignment of your primary and secondary displayon the fly without even rebooting!1Right-click on the Windows®desktop and click onProperties from the drop down menu.2Select the Settings tab.3ClickontheAdvanced button.4Select the Displays tab.This window shows you the display(s) that are active, and thebutton beside the active displays will be blue. The active bluebuttons will have the word “Primary”or “Secondary”besidethem.Clicking on a blue button (in a dual display configuration) willreassign the primary and secondary monitors. Clicking on“Apply”will enable any changes that you have made.

When it is checked, you can choose to have dialogboxes appear on the parent application’s monitor. (Theparent application is the application that generated thedialog box.) If the parent application or associated monitorcannot be located, the dialog box defaults to monitor 1. Youcan also choose to have dialog boxes appear on the monitorin which the cursor is located or to always appear on aspecific monitor in the array.

Click Add to enter your new combinationin the Assigned hot keys list box. Click Apply to activate assignedhot keys. NOTE: ATI recommends that a modifier key be used withany function key (F1, F2, etc.) assigned as a hot key. This willprevent interference with the function of these keys in individualapplications.To delete a hot key from the Assigned hot keys list box, highlight it,click Remove, and then click Apply.

33Direct 3D Display PropertiesThe Direct 3D properties page allows you to adjust the Direct3D settings.D3D SettingsWait for vertical sync allows you to lower the frame rate of fullscreen games. This will reduce image tearing that can occurwith higher frame rates.W-buffer support allows you to enable or disable W-buffersupport. It is recommend that W-buffer support should bedisabled for games that do not support this feature.Compressed texture format allows you to enable support forDirectX compressed texture formats. Some applications cannothandle too many texture formats. Disabling compressed textureformat the video driver ceases to support this feature. Thisreduces the number of texture formats supported.
34Alternate pixel center may eliminate problems with some 3Dgames that displays vertical and horizontal lines around texturesor text that appears incorrect. However, this setting should onlybe used if you are experiencing these symptoms, as it may causeproblems with other games.Z-buffer bit depths allows you to set the Z-buffer bit rate. Bydefault 16:24 (16 and 24) is selected to achieve optimumperformance.8-bit Stencil allows you to add 32-bit Z-buffer with 8 bits forstencil and 24 bits for the Z-buffer.Anti-aliasing provides you with an overall higher quality videoimage with a slight reduction in performance. Set Desktopand Video Overlay brightness (gamma) levels can also bechanged.Desktop brightness increases or decreases the color brightnessof you desktop. The higher the gamma value, the higher thebrightness and contrast of your display.Overlay brightness increases or decreases the color brightnessof your video overlay window. The higher the gamma value, thehigher the brightness and contrast of your display.Game gamma increases or decreases the color brightness ofDirect 3D or OpenGL games played in fullscreen mode.Color Curve adjusts the selected color (red, green, or blue) bymoving the color curve with your mouse.Default restores the color settings to the default values.

Thefollowing tips will help you get the most out of your TV Outfeature.IMPORTANT INFORMATIONfor European CustomersSome PC monitors in Europe cannot be usedsimultaneously with television display. When you enabletelevision display in Europe, the refresh rate for the monitorand television is set to 50Hz. Some monitors may notsupport this refresh rate and could be damaged.• Please check the documentation supplied with yourmonitor to see if your monitor supports a refresh rateof 50Hz.If your monitor does not support 50 Hz (or if youare not sure), then turn off your monitor beforeturning on your computer when using yourtelevision as a display.For information on disabling television display, seeEnabling and Disabling the Television Display onpage 41.Some televisions in Europe may use an SCARTconnection. However, most televisions (and VCRs)have a Composite video input, in which case you can use thesupplied S-Video to Composite video adapter. This process takes only afew seconds and helps program the television display.Using a Monitor vs. Using the Television DisplayUsing your television for your computer’s display is ideal forplaying games, giving presentations, watching movies, andbrowsing the Internet. However, the display on your monitormay change or looked squashed. This occurs because thedisplay adjusts to fit the dimensions of your television. Tocorrect the monitor’s display, use the monitor’s control buttonsto adjust its display size and position.Some single frequency monitors may not work with televisiondisplay enabled. If you experience problems when televisiondisplay is enabled, disable television display to restore yourmonitor’s display.Adjusting Monitor DisplayThe size of the display on your monitor may be smaller and notperfectly centered when you have television display enabled.These effects are caused by the changes required to provide aproper display on the television.Use the controls available on the Adjustments tabontheMonitor Properties page (accessible by clicking on theMonitor buttonontheATI Displays tab) to adjust the displayon your monitor only. Click on the Television button to adjustthe television display only.Viewing Text on TelevisionA TV is designed primarily to show moving, rather than static,images. The large dot pitch of a TV (which is fine for movingvideo) will yield poor quality static images such as text.The small text sizes commonly used for computer desktops canappear blurred or unclear on a TV. You can compensate for thisby using larger fonts.
