It utilizes theWindows CE operating system, and incorporates two optional scanning laser device,laser & imager, color LCD with touch screen and keypad.It provides the user with a standard Windows-based environment for customizing andoperating the device.This PA966 product reference guide will guide you to access your PA966.Unitech PA966 and Unitech PA967This user manual is shared and used by the series below:PA966- terminal with bluetooth utility only.PA967- PA966 terminal with bluetooth and with add-on gun grip for moreconvenient barcode scanning.
5Product Reference GuideNOTICEThis unit is equipped with a battery pack and backup battery. It is possible that the Unitech PA966 maynot powered on due to battery discharge as a result of storage.In the above situation, plug the PA966 to the USB cable with DC in port or put the unitinto the Unitech PA96x Cradle (with 12V/2A AC-DC adapter), and recharge the unit for 16 hours in order tofully charge its backup battery.The backup battery will charge from external power or the main battery (if the main battery still hasenough power to turn on). In the event the main battery is fully charged, refrain from using the PA966 for16 hours in order for the main battery to fully charge the backup battery.Backing up data by backup battery only, without the main battery installed in battery compartment maytake as long as 6 hours. Therefore, in order to prevent data protection failure due to backup battery failure,do not leave the PA966 without the rechargeable battery pack installed, or without connection to ACpower for an extended period of time.ۖFederal Communication Commission Interference StatementThis equipment has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a Class B digital device,pursuant to Part 15 of the FCC Rules. 8Product Reference GuideFirst Steps with the Unitech PA966:NOTE: Data you entered may not be properly stored until the built-in backup battery hasbeen adequately charged. Please remember to turn on the back up battery before youcharge the terminal.Installing the Battery Pack1.Remove the battery compartment door (located onthe lower back side of the unit).2.Position the battery pack with the label side towards you, and thebattery pack strap towards the bottom of the unit. 9Product Reference GuideOr place the PA966 into the Docking Station(first connect the power supply to the DockingStation).Connect the RS232/Charging Cable or USB/Charging Cable to the PA966, and thenconnect the AC adapter to the cable’s powerjack and an electrical outlet.Supplying Power to the PA9663.Position the battery pack and install the batterycompartment door.Charging the Main and Backup Batteries for the First TimeIt may take up to 16 hours to fully charge the empty backup battery. The first time charge shouldbe at least 16 hours to ensure a proper charge.CAUTION: Operating the PA966 for the first time without the AC adapter, and without fullycharging the backup battery may result in loss of data stored in RAM memory.ۖ
10Product Reference GuideIf a PCMCIA card is inserted into the PA966 without previ-ously attaching a Pulling Tag, the card can be removed byaffixing a length of adhesive tape to the surface of the cardand pulling the card out by pulling outward on the piece oftape.PCMCIA Pulling TagsPulling Tags simplify the removal of PCMCIA cards from the PA966. Beforeinserting a PCMCIA card, remove one of the three Pulling Tags from thePulling Tag sheet and adhere it to both sides of the PCMCIA card, leaving ashort (approx. ½”) tab. To remove the PCMCIA card, simply pull outwards onthis tab.Protective Screen FilmThe PA966 screen ships with a protective plastic film. You may remove this if desired bypeeling from one corner. The screen will be more susceptible to scratching without thefilm, but will be more readable.Using the StylusCAUTION: Never use anything other than the PA966’s stylus on thescreen. Using object other than a stylus could cause permanentdamage.To write data into a field on a form, use the stylus to print the letters ornumbers. TheWindows CE®screen will appear shortly.Adjusting Screen BrightnessPress [FUNC] key and Cursor key to decreaseor increase screen brightness.Calibrating the PA966The PA966 will prompt you to calibrate the unit bytapping a sequence of screen locations. Tap gently butfirmly. When you have completed the series of taps,press the [ENT] key to confirm it or press the [ESC]key to cancel it.This screen will automatically appear when the unit ispowered on for the first time or after the system isreset. Thiscan be a user-loaded application or a pre-loaded utility such as Scanner Setting.exe.The PA966 has two optional integrated scanners: Laser Scanner and Imager Scanner.Trigger keys are located on the left and right sides of the unit. Press either one.The PA966 also has a built-in Scanner Setting.exe program that allows the user to testthe barcode scan function for 1D & 2D also for image capturing. 18Product Reference GuideChapter 3. Power systemNote: Backing up data by backup battery only without the main battery installed in thebattery compartment may take as long as 6 hours. Therefore, in order to prevent dataprotection failure due to backup battery failure, do not leave the PA966 without the re-chargeable battery pack installed, or without connection to AC power for an extendedperiod of time.It may take up to 72 hours to backup data when the PA966 is automatically shutdown because of very low battery power while the depleted batteries are stillinstalled in the battery compartment.Note: Before using the PA966 for the first time, charge the unit for 16 hours to fully chargethe empty backup battery. Operating the PA966 for the first time without the AC adapter,and without fully charging the backup battery may result in loss of data stored in RAMmemory.Charging the Main and Backup Battery for the First TimeCharging the Lithium-Ion Battery PackThe optional Docking Station is a convenient accessory for daily use of the PA966. In other words, there is noexternal power supply, the battery charge is low orvery low, and charging the PA966 is recommended.Power Status IndicationFour different icons are displayed on the status bar to indicate the on-board power status.“Backup Battery Low” icon:When displayed indicates the backup battery islow and needs to be charged. Backup Battery Low“Plug” icon:When displayed, this icon indicates that thebattery is charging. 20Product Reference GuideCheckingMainandBackupBatteryStatusEnter “Power Properties”:If the above mentioned “Plug” icon or “Battery” icon isdisplayed, double tap this icon to bring up the “PowerProperties” screen.Or, select Settings/Control Panel from the Startmenu and then double tap the “Power” icon to display“Power Properties”.Check Battery Status:It is necessary to charge the battery when “Low” or “Very Low”are displayed in bold characters. If “Low” or “Very Low” are stilldisplayed after charging, please contact Unitech TechnicalSupport.The battery menu item will show the status of the main andbackup batteries. There are 3 kinds of status indicators —“Good”, “Low” and “Very Low”. Bold characters indicate theactual status, e.g. battery icons in the illustration at right meanboth the main and backup batteries are “GOOD”.
21Product Reference GuideTap the “Backlight” menu item to display the following 3 selections:HowtoSaveBatteryPowerBecause the power consumption of the LCD backlight is high,turn off the backlight function if it is not necessary.If a backlight is required, set “automatically turn off the back-light” function.To change backlight settings, select Settings / Control Panelfrom the Start menu, and then double tap the “Display” icon.Backlight SettingAutomatic shut-down of the PA966The PA966 will enter idle mode when there is no task, or all tasks are waiting for input. Indefault setting, the PA966 will automatically turn itself off if it remains idle for 3 minutesand when there is no external charging power applied. Pressing the power button willreturn the PA966 to the same point at the time of automatic shutdown.This function can also be activated when the PA966 is pluggedinto the power adapter or placed in its cradle by tapping thecheck box and then tapping the arrow to select from a list of timeperiods. The available time periods are 1, 2, 5,10, 15 and 30minutes.In Power Properties, select “Power Off”. Customize automaticshut off time by tapping the arrow to select from a list of timeperiods. The available time periods are 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 minutes.ۖ

Available idle times are: 15 and 30 seconds, and 1, 2, 5, 10,15, and 30 minutes.Automatically turn on the backlight when keyThis function is only activated by the PA966’s keypad instead of the Windows CE keyboard.Cold BootPress the coldboot button underneath the PCMCIAcover, the terminal will perform cold boot.NOTE: Cold Boot will cause thePA966 to return to its originalfactory settings.Warm BootWARNING: Warm Boot will cause unsaved data to be lost.To perform a warm boot while the PA966 is operating, insert a pin (paper clip works well) into thereset hole on the back of the terminal, right below the PCMCIA cover.Under the Windows folder of your terminal, locate the file BootMode.exe, execute the program, andconfirm the warning message.
23Product Reference GuideStorage and Safety PrecautionsAlthough charged, Lithium-Ion batteries may be left unused for several months, theircapacity may be depleted due to build up of internal resistance. If this happens they willrequire recharging prior to use. Lithium-Ion batteries may be stored at temperaturesbetween-20°C to 60°C, however they may be depleted more rapidly at the high end of thisrange. It is recommended to store batteries within normal room temperature ranges.Charging ConsiderationsIt is important to consider the environment temperature whenever you are charging theLithium-Ion battery pack. The process is most efficient at normal room temperature orslightly cooler. It is essential that you charge batteries within the stated range of 18°C to25°C. Charging batteries outside of the specified range could damage the batteries andshorten their charging life cycle.ۖ

CommunicationConnectingIntroductionThe Unitech PA966 allows users to link to a host computer via RS-232,USB or IrDAconnection for data communication.This chapter provides an overview of the communication of the PA966. The followingsubchapters cover these topics:“”Microsoft ActiveSync” for details about serial communication via USB port orBluetooth.Docking StationPlug the RS232 end of the communication cable to thePC’s 9 pin Com Port and the other end into the cradle’sRS232 port. Plug the power supply into the powerreceptacle on the docking station.Plug in the USB end of the communication cableto the PC's USB port and the other end into thecradle's USB port. Plug the power supply into thepower jack of the docking station.
25Product Reference GuideActiveSyncIn order to exchange data between your desktop computer and PA966, MicrosoftActiveSync must be installed on your computer.This chapter will introduce Microsoft ActiveSync version 4.2. ActiveSync provides a user-friendly interface and it can be downloaded free of charge from Microsoft’s web site.With Microsoft ActiveSync you can:Add programs to and remove programs from the PA966.Transfer data.Back up and restore PA966 data.Installing Microsoft ActiveSyncBefore beginning installation, carefully read the following:If you run the Windows NT®operating system with a service pack, you will be informedduring setup that you may need to reinstall the service pack. Try connecting first, andif unsuccessful, reinstall the latest service pack.To set up your communication settings, a PA966 serial cable is required to connectthe PA966 to your host computer.Because you have to restart your computer during installation, save your work andquit all programs before you begin.InstallationFollow the installation procedure below to install Microsoft ActiveSync, connect yourPA966 to your computer, and establish a partnership for synchronization (ifdesired):ۖ

You are prompt for user information.

The installation wizard has gathered the information it needs to install Activesync and prompts you to begin the installation. Click Install. The program begin the installation. ۖ

You may be prompted to restart your computer.After you have installed Activesync and restarted your computer, the Activesync icon appears on your computer's taskbar. After the program has finished installing you will see the following screen. Connecting the Device to Your Computer1. After Activesync has been installed, connect the USB charging cable to the universalconnector on the bottom of your device.2. Plug the other end of the USB charging cable into a USB port on your computer.3. Turn the device on.4. Activesync starts automatically and configure the USB port to work with the PA966.TheNew Partnership setup wizard will automatically start.Note: If Activesync does not start automatically, click Start > Programs > MicrosoftActivesync. If a message appears indicating that it is unable to detect a connection, clickthe Cancel button and manually configure the communication settngs
29Product Reference GuideIn the displayed window, you can:Select your PA966 to use MicrosoftActiveSync features suchas changing synchronization options,as described in the “Synchronization”section.Use this window, which is the rootwindow to the PA966, to copy andmove files between the PA966 and yourdesktop computer, as described in the“Synchronization” section.Open the Explorer window by double-clicking your device icon in the MobileDevices window.5. Follow the onscreen instructions.6. When the configuration processis complete, the ActiveSync windowappears.ۖ7. Synchronization will be initialized and will take place if you have chosen to synchronizeperiodically or upon connection.Note: Your computer can create a partnership with multiple PA966s. Also, a PA966 cancreate a partnership with up totwo computers.
30Product Reference GuideSynchronizing with your computerSynchronization takes place according to the options you choose while setting upActivesync on your computer. If you accept the default (On Connect) synchronization option in the Microsoft ActiveSync Setup Wizard, you'll be able to simply connectYour PA966 to your desktop computer and synchronization will take place.If you have not enabled the On Connect feature in ActiveSync, you can startActiveSync in either of the following ways:ʳOn your computer, double click My computer > Mobile Devices folder.ʳConnect the USB cable between the computer and PA966.Connection optionsYou can set remote synchronization with your computer using the followingconnection options:-USB connection-Infrared connection-Bluetooth connection-WiFi connectionUSB ConnectionTo synchronize with your computer using a USB connection:1. Connect your device to your computer using the USB charging cable.2. Initiate connection by tapping Start > Settings > Control Panel > PCconnection.3. Select Enable direct connections to the desktop computer using thischeck box.4. Tap OK.
31Product Reference GuideSynchronizationYou can synchronize information between the PA966 and your desktop computer to ensureboth computers have current information. First you’ll need to install Microsoft ActiveSyncon your desktop computer.Synchronization takes place according to the options you chose during MicrosoftActiveSync setup. Double-tap a message to read it.When you connect to your Internet mail service, the InBox downloads only the first 100lines of each new message to the InBox folder by default. No mail attachments aredownloaded.
