This means a commitment to developinghigh-quality hearing solutions that incorporate specialfeatures to solve the everyday problems and concernsyou have with hearing loss and hearing devices.SmartControl is a small and user-friendly remotecontrol which allows you to manage your hearinginstruments’ volume levels, switch between listeningprograms and adjust the comfort and clarity of sound,all in the palm of your hand.

4Turning Your Smart Control On and Off Your Smart Control has an Off-On switch on the leftside of the device. • To turn the remote control on, slide the switch intothe On position  . • To turn the remote control off, slide the switch intothe Off position  . Sliding the switch to the Offposition will avoid sending unintentionalcommands to your hearing instruments (while thedevice is in your handbag or pocket, for example). RLoffon
5Replacing the BatteryThe battery compartment is located on the back of theSmart Control. 1. Slide the battery cover in the direction of the arrow. 2. Grasp the old battery with your thumb and indexfinger and remove.3. Insert the new battery into the batterycompartment in the correct +/- position, placing thebattery’sminus (-) end into the compartment first.  4. Slide the battery cover in the opposite direction ofthe arrow.RLRL
6Low Battery WarningWhen you see the left and right indicator lights flashrapidly for two seconds, your Smart Control is warningyou that the battery in your handheld device is low.You will see the warning every time you turn on yourSmart Control or send a command to your hearinginstruments until you change the battery or thebattery dies. Caring for Batteries•Always discardbatteries in a safe andenvironmentally friendly way.• To prolong battery life, remember to turn theremote control off when not in use.Battery Warnings• Never leave your remote control or batteries wheresmall children and pets can reach them.• Never put your remote control or batteries in yourmouth. If a battery is swallowed, call a physicianimmediately.
7Operating InstructionsBefore using your Smart Control, turn on your hearinginstruments to ensure they are able to receive theSmart Control commands.Smart Control is designed to be used comfortably inyour hand at a maximum distance of one arm’s length.You do not have to point the remote at your hearinginstruments. Placing the remote control directly nextto or too close to your hearing instruments maydecrease the remote’s effectiveness.Selecting Which Hearing Instrument to AdjustAt the top of thehandheld device, there isaLeft-Both-Right switch.This switch allows you toselect the hearing instruments you want to adjust.• The left (blue) indicator light will flash to indicateyour left hearing instrument is being adjusted.• The right (red) indicator light will flash to indicateyour right hearing instrument is being adjusted.• Both indicator lights will flash to indicate your leftand right hearing instruments are being adjusted atonce.RLright both left
8Adjusting Your Hearing Instruments withSmart ControlYour Smart Control provides backlighting each time abutton is pressed, allowing you to see the remotebuttons in dimly lit environments.Comfort-Clarity ControlThe Comfort-Clarity Control can improvelistening comfort in noisy situations and assistwith sound clarity and ease of listening. • Turn the scroll wheel up to improvesound clarity.• Turn the scroll wheel down to improve listeningcomfort.As the comfort-clarity settings are adjusted, yourhearing instruments may beep. Please refer to yourhearing instrument guide for moreinformation on thecomfort-clarity beeps.Note that the Comfort-Clarity Control on your hearinginstruments may be deactivated by your hearinghealthcare professional and, therefore, could beinactive. Talk to your hearing healthcare professional tofind out if you are able to adjust your hearinginstruments’ comfort-clarity settings.RL
9Volume Control Buttons• To increase the volume on your hearing instruments,press the +button on your Smart Control.• To decrease the volume on your hearinginstruments, press the –button on your SmartControl.As the volume is adjusted, your hearing instrumentmay beep. Please refer to your hearing instrumentguide for more information on your hearinginstruments’ volume beeps. Note that the volume control on your hearinginstruments may be deactivated by your hearinghealthcare professional and, therefore, could beinactive. Talk to your hearing healthcare professionalto find out if you areable to adjust your hearinginstruments’ volume settings.Home ButtonTo return to the listening program that isinitiated when you first turn on your hearinginstruments (i.e., your start-up program) press theHome button. Regardless of the position of the Left-Both-Right switch, pressing the Home button sends acommand to both of your hearing instruments to
10return to the start-up program. Please refer to yourhearing instrument guide to determine which programis your start-up program.Telephone ButtonTo switch to the telephone program, press theTelephone button.To exit the telephone program, press the Home orProgram Change button.Program Change ButtonTo change the currently set listening program onyour hearing instruments, press the ProgramChange button. The hearing instrument will advance tothe next listening program. Please refer to your ownhearing instrument guide to determine which programsareavailable to you and their program beepnotifications.LearnNow ButtonThe LearnNow button allows you to tell yourhearing instruments that you like the currentvolume and comfort-clarity settings. When you pressthe LearnNow button, Smart Control sends a messageto your hearing instruments to remember and usethese settings when you are in a similar listeningenvironment in the future. In this way, LearnNow allows
11you to personalize the volume and comfort-claritysettings in your hearing instruments such that fewermanual adjustments are required by you in the future.Note: The LearnNow button will only work when yourhearing instruments are set to the automatic program.After pressing the LearnNow button, your hearinginstruments will give you a short three beep melody, ifthe LearnNow command was successfully received.Please refer to your hearing instrument guide to learnmoreabout the automatic program.AccessoriesYour Smart Control can be used with a lanyard so thatyou can carry the device around your neck or wrist.Attach the lanyard to the device, as illustrated below.1. 2.3. 4.1. 2.3. 4.
12Caring for Your Smart Control • Open the battery compartment and remove thebattery if the remote control will not be used forlong periods of time.• Do not use your Smart Control in the bath orshower or immerse it in water. • If your remote device does become wet, do notattempt to dry it in an oven or microwave. Do notadjust any controls. Open the battery compartmentand allow your remote device to dry naturally for 24hours.• Protect your remote device from excessive heat(hair dryer, vehicle glove box or dashboard).• Do not drop your remote device or knock it againsthard surfaces.Cleaning Your Smart Control Do not use alcohol to clean your remote control. Use adamp cloth to clean the outside of the remote.
13Warnings• Smart Control should only be used as directed byyour hearing healthcare professional.• Smart Control uses a low-power, digitally codedinductive transmission to communicate to yourhearing instruments. Although unlikely, interferencewith medical devices such as pacemakers ispossible. Interference should not occur with normaluse, holding the remote comfortably in the hand, 4inches (10 centimeters) or morefrom the body.Therefore, it is recommended that pacemaker usersdo not keep the remote device in a breast pocket.•Do not use Smart Control in explosion hazard areas.• Do not use Smart Control in locations forbidden touse electronic devices, such as an airplane. • Store your Smart Control in a safe location for CTand MRI scans or for other electromagneticprocedures.• Changes or modifications made to the SmartControl not expressly approved by Unitron Hearingmay void the user’s authority to operate theequipment.
14Precautions• If your Smart Control fails to operate after you havecorrectly inserted a new battery, contact yourhearing healthcare professional. Always bring bothyour Smart Control and your hearing instrumentsfor service questions.• Your Smart Control and your hearing instrumentsare given a unique communication code. Because ofthis code, your Smart Control will not affect hearinginstruments worn byothers.• Your Smart Control uses the most moderncomponents to provide an extremely reliableexperience with virtually no interference from otherdevices. However, when operating the Smart Controlnear a computer terminal, communication device suchas a digital cell phone, or other strong electromagneticfield, it may be necessary to be at least 24 inches (60centimeters) away to ensureproper operation. If yourhearing instruments do not respond to the SmartControl because of an unusual field disturbance, moveaway from the disturbing field.
15LabelingThe serial number and year of manufacture are locatedinside the battery compartment.Please fill out the contact information sticker providedwith your new Smart Control and place inside thebattery compartment.
