1When using your telephone equipment, basic safety precautions should always be followedto reduce the risk of  fire, electric shock and injury, including the following:1. Read and understand all instructions.2. Follow all warnings and instructions marked on the product.3. Unplug this product from the wall outlet before cleaning. Do not use liquid cleaners oraerosol cleaners. Use a damp cloth for cleaning.4. Do not use this product near water (for example, near a bath tub, kitchen sink, orswimming pool).5. 4Connecting Power to Base UnitChoose a location for the Basenear an electrical outlet and atelephone jack.This phone requires a modulartelephone jack and a standardelectrical outlet (110v AC) notcontrolled by a wall switch. Plugthe AC power adaptor into theelectrical outlet and the DCconnector to the jack on thebottom of the Base Unit.Installation of Battery Pack in HandsetSetupFollow the steps below:1. Remove battery compartmentcover by pressing on theindentation and slidingdownward.2. Align the two holes in the plugwith the socket pins, thensnap the plug into place.3. Place the  battery pack in thecompartment, with the wiresin the lower left corner, alongthe bottom of the  pack. Anglethe top half of the pack in first,under the 2 claws. Then snapthe lower portion of the packinto place. Place the wiresuder the guide, located belowthe battery pack.4. Replace cover by sliding it upinto place.2314Charge the Battery PackThe Handset should be charged initially for 12 hours.  Afterwards, a maintenance chargeof at least 10 hours is sufficient.  Maximum talk time on a full charge is approximately 5hours.  Maximum standby time is 5 days.
5SetupCheck for Dial ToneAfter the batteries are charged, connect the modular telephone cord between a livephone jack and the jack located on the bottom of the Base Unit.  Pick up the Handset andpress PHONE.  You should hear a dial tone.Set the Dial Mode.Tone/Pulse SelectionYour gz 2434 is preset for tone dialing,  see “Telephone Operation” for details. CAUTION: Use only the VTech power supply provided with your telephone.IMPORTANT:FOR MAXIMUM PERFORMANCE OF YOURCORDLESS TELEPHONE SYSTEM:1. Choose a central location for your Base Unit.2. Install your Base Unit and Extension Handsets awayfrom electronic equipment, such as  personalcomputers, television sets and  microwave ovens.3. In locations where there are multiple cordlesstelephones, separate base units as much as possible.4. Install your telephone equipment away from heatsources and sunlight.5. Avoid excessive moisture, dust or extreme cold.

8Handset Ringer Style/Battery SaveYou can select from four different Handset ringer styles, or turn the ringer off and extendthe battery life.1Make sure the Handset is off.2Press PROG to enter programming mode.3Press   until the screen displays RINGER: and the current setting.4Press SELECT. The the current setting blinks.5Press   or   to select  the desired option . You will hear a sample of each ring.6Press SELECT to choose the displayed ringer setting.See RINGER OPTIONS, on page 15, to learn about all of the exciting custom rings youcan program on your  gz 2434.Set Date and TimeYou can edit the date and  the time by choosing the “DATE/TIME” mode.1. Use   or   to adjust the month, then press SELECT.6. Repeat step 5 to adjust the day, hour, minute and AM or PM.7. Contact your local telephone company for more information.When a caller leaves a message in your voice mailbox, the MESSAGE light on the BaseUnit will illuminate. 9You can retrieve your voicemail messages from any telephone.  If the indicators remain onafter all new messages have been reviewed, you can turn them off manually:1. Make sure the Handset is off.2. Press PROG to enter programming mode.3. Press   or   until the screen display MESSAGES WAITING.4. Press SELECT.  The screen displays:5. Use   or   to choose YES or NO.  Press SELECT or PROG to confirm.   If youchoose YES, the MESSAGES WAITING animation on the Handset and theMESSAGE LED on the Base will turn off.Temporary Tone DialingIf  you have dial pulse (rotary) service, you can change from dial pulse to touch tonedialing during a call by pressing * . This is useful if you need to send touch tone signalsfor access to telephone banking or long-distance services.1Dial the number.2Press *. Buttons pressed after this send touch tone signals.3After you hang up, the phone automatically returns to dial pulse (rotary) service.Operating RangeThis cordless telephone operates within the maximum power allowed by the FederalCommunications Commission (FCC). Even so, this Handset and Base can communicateover only a certain distance — which can vary with the locations of the Base and Handset,the weather, and the construction of your home or office. For best performance, keep theBase antenna fully upright.If  you  receive a call while you are out of  range, the Handset might not ring — or if itdoesring, the call might not connect when you  press PHONE . Move closer to the Base,then press PHONE to answer the call.If  you  move out of  range  during  a  phone conversation,  you might hear noise orinterference.  To improve reception, move closer to the Base.If you move out of range without pressing OFF, your phone will be left  “off  the hook.”To hang up properly, walk back into range, periodically pressing OFF .Display Screen MessagesTelephone OperationScreen Displays:      When** RINGING ** There is a call coming in.CONNECTING... 10This cordless phone can store 50 telephone numbers with names, each up to 24 digitslong. Entries are stored alphabetically. For consistency with Caller ID entries, you maywish to enter last names first.Note: Press OFF at any time to exit directory.Store a Number/Name in the Directory1Press PROG.  The screen displays DIRECTORY .2Press SELECT . The screen displays ENTER NAME .3Using the chart below, enter up to 15 characters for thename you’re storing with the number. 13Caller ID OperationAbout Call HistoryThis phone assigns each incoming call a number from 1 to 90. The most recent call will havethe highest number. When the memory is full, the oldest call information is deleted to makeroom for new incoming call information.For each call that comes in, the screen displays the following information between the firstand second rings:• Your caller’s name (15 letters are sent by your telephone company)• The caller’s area code and telephone number• The time and date of the call• The position of the call in call history.• The repeat Tag (showing the is telephone number is the same as the latest recordin the memory).Note: When a repeating CID arrives, its time and date information will overwrite the oldinformation in the CID memory and displayed during CID review.If you answer a call before the information appears on the screen, it will not be in the callhistory.Note: Press OFF at any time to exit call history.Review Call HistoryThe screen displays call information for about 15 seconds after it has been received.1 Press   (CID) to view call history.2 Use    or     to scroll through records in call history.Delete Records from Call HistoryDelete a Specific Call1 Locate the record you want to delete from call history.2 Press SELECT, then press   or   until ERASE NO YES ALL flashes.3 Press SELECT. Press PROG, then use   or   until you see COMPOSER.2. Press SELECT.  You will see EMPTY 1, or the name of the first composedmelody, if you’ve already composed a tune in this location.3. Use   and   to scroll to other melody locations.4. Once you’ve chosen a location, press SELECT.5. Use the keypad to compose your own creation.  The maximum number ofnotes is 99.You can adjust the characteristics of the ‘note’ you’ve just selected, by entering the followingdigits:8      Shortens the duration of the note (or rest).9      Lengthens the note.0Inserts a rest (or pause) of the same duration of the previous note.*Sets the octave for new notes.#Makes the note a sharp.Deletes the last note or rest you entered.6. Press SELECT after you have finished composing your tune.  Your choicesare now OPTION,  PLAY  and SAVE.7. Using   and  , choose one of the 3 selections.Choosing OPTION allows you adjust the Tempo and the Instrument used to play yourtune. 16Choosing INSTRUMENT, you have a choice of the following:Grand Piano (the default setting) 01Church Organ 02Steel Guitar 03Violin 04Music Box 05Soprano Sax 06Pizzicato String 07Flute 08Use   or   until you select an instrument, press SELECT.Choose the PLAY option to hear approximately 1 minute of your composition.  Press OFFto stop playback.Choose SAVE to save your composition.  Using the keypad, give your composition aname.  You can use a maximum of 8 characters.You can also convert a favorite tune from any MIDI file into code for entering on the gz 2434,using the www.vtechphones.com website.  See the enclosed insert for details.Ringer Options
17Your gz 2434 Handset is equipped with a 2.5mm Headset Jack for use with anoptional accessory Headset for hands-free operation. If you choose to use theHeadset option, you must obtain an optional accessory Headset, which is compatiblewith the gz 2434.To purchase a Headset, call VTech Customer Service at 1-800-595-9511.Once you have a compatible 2.5mm Headset, locate the Headset Jack on the gz 2434Handset. Connect the plug on the Headset cord to the jack on the cordless Handset.The plug should fit securely. Do not force the connection.NOTE :Whenever a compatible Headset isconnected to the cordless Handset, themicrophone on the Handset will bemuted. This is done to limit the effectof background noise.Belt ClipThe gz 2434 is also equipped with adetachable belt clip. Align the pins on theinside edge of the clip with the notcheson the sides of the Handset. The beltclip should snap securely into place. Donot force the connection.Headset Operation

Please retain your receipt as your proof ofpurchaseIf the phone doesn’t work at all, check these items first:• Make sure the AC adapter is plugged into an outlet not controlled by a wall switch.• Make sure the telephone line cord is plugged firmly into the base unit and the modularjack.• Make sure the Base antenna is fully upright.• If the Handset does not beep when you press PHONE, the battery might needcharging.• Make sure the battery pack is installed correctly.• If you have dial pulse (rotary) service on your phone line, make sure the dial mode isset to dial pulse (see Telephone Operation).• Microwave appliances may cause interference with this phone. If you experienceinterference, move away from the microwaveIf the above suggestions don’t solve the problem, try re-initializing the Handsetand Base:1Disconnect the power to the Base.2Remove the Handset battery pack.3Wait a few minutes.4Connect the power to the Base.5Insert the Handset battery pack.6Put the Handset in the Base to re-initialize.If you hear a two-beep signal when you try to use the handset:• You might be out of range. Move closer to the Base and try again.• If  moving  closer to the Base doesn’t  help, try  following the directions  above forre-initializing the Handset and Base.If the phone does not ring when you receive a call:• Make sure the Handset ringer is on.• Make sure the telephone line cord  is  connected firmly to the Base and the telephone jack.• Make sure the AC adapter is plugged firmly into an outlet not controlled by a wall switch.• You might be too far from the Base; move closer.• You might have too many extension phones on your telephone line to allow all ofthem to ring. Try unplugging some of them.If you hear noise or interference when using the phone:• Make sure the Base antenna is fully upright.• You may be out of range. Move closer to the Base.• Press and release CHAN to change to another of the 30 channels available. If noiseis exceptionally loud, move closer to the Base before changing channels.• Household appliances plugged into the same circuit as the Base can sometimescause interference. Try moving the appliance or the Base to another outlet.• Using the Handset near household appliances (microwaves, computers, television,stereos, etc.) can sometimes cause interference. Move away from appliances whileusing the Handset.IN CASE OF DIFFICULTY
19IN CASE OF DIFFICULTY• The layout of your home or office might be limiting the operating range. Try moving theBase to another location, preferably on an upper floor.• If the buttons don’t work, try placing the handset in the Base for at least 15 seconds.If you hear other calls while using your phone:• Press  CHAN to change to another channel.• Disconnect the Base from the modular jack and plug in a corded telephone. If you stillhear other calls, the problem is probably in your wiring or local service. Call your localtelephone service company.If you lose a call after changing channels:You were probably almost out of range. Move closer to the Base before changing channels.Before placing another call, set the Handset in the Base for at least 15 seconds.If you are unable to operate special telephone services or other equipmentrequiring touch tone signals:If you have dial pulse (rotary) service, follow the directions under “Temporary ToneDialing” in the TELEPHONE OPERATION section of this manual.If the MESSAGE light on the base does not go off even after you’ve listened tovoice mail messages:1 Press PROG.2 Press   until the screen displays MESSAGES WAITING .3 Press SELECT. The screen displays LIGHTS OFF?YES .4 Press SELECT again to turn off the MESSAGE  light on Base.
20Taking Care Of Your TelephoneYour  cordless  telephone contains  sophisticated  electronic parts, so it  must betreated with care.Avoid rough treatmentPlace the Handset down gently.  Save  the  original packing materials to protect your telephoneif you ever need to ship it.Avoid waterYour telephone can be damaged if it gets wet. Do not use the Handset outdoors in the rain,or handle it with wet hands. Do not install your Base Unit near a sink, bathtub or shower.Electrical stormsElectrical storms can sometimes cause power surges harmful to electronic equipment.For your own safety, use caution when using electric appliances during storms.Cleaning your telephoneYour  telephone  has  a  durable  plastic casing  that should retain its luster for many years.Clean it only with a soft cloth slightly dampened with water or a mild soap. Do not useexcess water or cleaning solvents of any kind.Remember that electrical appliances can cause serious injury if used when you arewet or standing in water. If your Base Unit should fall into water, DO NOT RETRIEVEIT UNTIL YOU UNPLUG THE POWER CORD AND TELEPHONE LINE CORDSFROM THE WALL. Then pull the unit out by the unplugged cords.Maintenance
21Warranty StatementWhat does this limited warranty cover?•The manufacturer of this VTech product, VTech Communications, warrants to theholder of a valid proof of purchase ("Consumer" or "you") that the product and allaccessories provided by VTech in the sales package ("Product") are free from materialdefects in material and workmanship, pursuant to the following terms and conditions,when installed and used normally and in accordance with operation instructions. Thislimited warranty extends only to the Consumer for Products purchased and used inthe United States of America.What will VTech Communications do if the Product is not free from materialdefects in materials and workmanship during the limited warranty period("Materially Defective Product")?•During the limited warranty period, VTech's authorized service representative will repairor replace at VTech's option, without charge, a Materially Defective Product. If werepair this product, we may use new or refurbished replacement parts. If we chooseto replace this product, we may replace it with a new or refurbished product of thesame or similar design. VTech will return repaired or replacement products to youin working condition. VTech will retain defective parts, modules, or equipment. Repairor raplacement of Product. at Vtech`s option is your exclusive remedy. You shouldexpect the repair or replacement to take approximately 30 days.How Long is the limited warranty period ?•The limited warranty period for the product extends for ONE(1)YEAR from the dateof purchase if we repair or replace a Materially Defective Product the terms of thislimitad warranty. this limited warranty also applies to repaired or replacement Productsfor a period of either (a) 90 days from the date the repaired or replacement Productis shipped to you or (b) the time remaining on the original one-year limited warranty.whichever is longer.What is not covered by this limited warranty ?This limited warranty does not cover1. Product that has been subjected to misuse,accident, shipping or other physical damageimproper installation, abnormal operation or handling,  neglect,inundation fire, water,or other liquid intrusion; or2. Product that has been damaged due to repair,alteratio,or modification byanyone other than an authorized service representative of VTech; or3. Product to the extent that the problem experienced is caused by signal conditionsnetwork reliability or cable or antenna systems; or4. Product to the extent that the problem is caused by use with non_VTech electricalaccessories; or5. Product whose warranty/quality stickers, Product serial numbers plates or electronicserial numbers have been removed, altered or rendered illegible; or6. Product purchased, used, serviced, or shipped for repair from outside the UnitedStates, or used for commercial or institutional purposes (including but not limited toProducts used for rental purposes ) ; or7. Product returned without valid proof of purchase (see 6 below); or8. Charges for installation or set up , adjustment of customer controls. and installationor repair of systems outside the unit.
22How do you get warranty service?• To obtain warranty service in the United States of America, call 1 800-595-9511 forinstructions regarding where to return the Product. Before calling for service, pleasecheck the user's manual. A check of the Product controls and features may saveyou a service call.• Except as provided by applicable law, you assume the risk of loss or damage duringtransit and transportation and are responsible for delivery or handling charges incurred inthe transport of Product(s) to the service location . VTech will return repaired orreplaced product under this limited warranty to you , transportation, delivery or handlingcharges prepaid. VTech assumes no risk for damage or loss of the Product in transit.• If the Product failure is not covered by this limited warranty, or proof of purchasedoes not meet the terms of this limited warranty, VTech will notify you and will requestthat you authorize the cost of repair prior to any further repair activity. You must payfor the cost of repair and return shipping costs for the repair of Products that arenot covered by this limited warranty.What must you return with the Product to get warranty service?1. Return the entire original package and contents including the Product to the VTechservice location along with a description of the malfunction or difficulty:2. Include "valid proof of purchase" (sales receipt) identifying the Product purchased(Product model) and the date of purchase or receipt; and3. Provide your name, complete and correct mailing address, and telephone number.Other Limitations•This warranty is the complete and exclusive agreement between you and VTech.It supersedes all other written or oral communications related to this Product. VTechprovides no other warranties for this product. The warranty exclusivelydescribes allof VTech's responsibilities regarding the product. There are no other express warranties.No one is authorized to make modifications to this limited warranty and you shouldnot rely on any such modification.State Law Rights: This warranty gives you specific legal rights, and you may also haveother rights which vary from state to state.Limitations: Implied warranties, including those of fitness for a particular purpose andmerchantability (an unwritten warranty that the product is fit for ordinary use) are limitedto one year from date of purchase. Some states do not allow limitations on how longan implied warranty lasts, so the above limitation may not apply to you.•In no event shall VTech be liable for any indirect, special, incidental, consequential,or similar damages (including, but not limited to lost profits or revenue, inability to usethe product, or other associated equipment, the cost of substitute equipment, andclaims by third parties) resulting from the use of this product. Rights of the telephone companyIf this equipment is causing harm to the telephone network, the telephone company maytemporarily discontinue your telephone service. The telephone company is required tonotify you before interrupting service. If advance notice is not practical, you will be notifiedas soon as possible. You will be given the opportunity to correct the problem and thetelephone company is required to inform you of your right to file a complaint with theFCC. Your telephone company may make changes in its facilities, equipment, operation,or procedures that could affect the proper functioning of this product. The telephonecompany is required to notify you if such changes are planned.5. Hearing aid compatibilityIf this product is equipped with a corded or cordless Handset, it is hearing aid compatible.6. Testing the emergency telephone numbers you have stored is not recommended.However, if you do make a call to an emergency number:• You must remain on the line and briefly explain the reason for the call before hangingup.• Programming/testing of emergency numbers should be performed during off-peakhours, such as in the early morning or late evening, when the emergency servicestend to be less busy.IC (Industry Canada)This telephone is registered for use in Canada.The term “IC:” before the radio certification number only signifies that Industry Canadatechnical specifications were met.Notice:This equipment meets the applicable Industry Canada Terminal Equipment TechnicalSpecifications.
