1Important Safety InstructionsWhen using your telephone equipment, basic safety precautions should always be followedto reduce the risk of fire, electric shock and injury, including the following:1. If you are not sure of the type of power supply in your home, consultyour dealer or local power company.8. Do not allow anything to rest on the power cord. Do not install this product wherethe cord may have anyone walking on it.9. Never push objects of any kind into this product through slots in the Base or Handsetas they may touch dangerous voltage points or short out parts that could result ina risk of fire or electric shock. Using additional Handsets, up to 2 people can be conferenced on a call (2Handsets), or two extensions can be conferenced on a call, while two other extensionscan be talking internally, using the Intercom feature.This manual is designed to familiarize you with the  i 5871  cordless telephone. 7Getting StartedSetupConnecting Power to Base UnitPlug the AC power adapter into an electrical outlet, and the DC connector into thebottom of the Base Unit.Installation and Charge of Battery Cells in Handset1. Remove the battery cover and place thenew battery cells in the Handset with thepositive and negative poles aligned in thebattery compartment.2. Replace the battery cover by sliding itupwards.3. If the new battery cells are not alreadycharged, place the Handset in its Chargeror Base Unit, and allow it to charge for atleast 12 hours. After initial charge, amaintenance charge of 8 hours shouldbe sufficient.The original Handset that is shipped with your i 5871 system will beautomatically registered to the Base. This Handset is HANDSET 1.
8Getting StartedSetupAs you register additional Handsets to the system, they will be assigned extension numbersin the following order: HANDSET 2, HANDSET 3, etc.Whenever charged Handset battery cells are installed, the Handset will automaticallybegin Searching for Base... (if previously registered), or it will prompt you to EnterBase ID to register the new Handset.Charging of the Handset Battery CellsThe Handset of your i 5871 cordless telephone is powered by rechargeable battery cellswhich  charge automatically whenever the Handset is in its Base Unit or charger.Maximum talk time on fully charged cells is 8 hours, and maximum standby time is 5 days.You should charge the battery cells for at least 12 hours when you first receive yourphone. You’ll know the battery cells need charging when:• The low battery message is displayed:• The Handset seems completely dead, the LCD is com-pletely clear and does not activate when you press thekeys.IMPORTANT:1. Do not dispose of battery cells in a fire, they mayexplode.2. Do not open or mutilate the battery cells. Toxic substances may be released,causing harm to the eyes and/or skin.3. Be careful when handling battery cells in order to prevent an accidental short ofthe charge contacts, potentially causing the battery cells to overheat.4. Do not dispose of the battery cells into household garbage.Connecting to Phone LinePlug one end of the telephone line cord into the jack on the bottom of the Base Unit. Plugthe other end of this cord into the wall jack.Checking for Dial ToneAfter the battery cells are charged press ON on the Hand-set. See Settings for tone/pulse options and otherdetails.IMPORTANT: FOR MAXIMUM PERFORMANCEOF YOUR CORDLESS TELEPHONE SYSTEM:1. Choose a central location for your Base Unit.2.  Install your Base Unit and Extension Hand-sets away from electronic equipment such aspersonal computers, television sets and micro-wave ovens.3. In locations where there are multiple cordlesstelephones, separate base units as much aspossible.4. Install your telephone equipment away fromheat sources and sunlight.5. Avoid excessive moisture, dust or extremecold.CAUTION: Use only the VTech power supply provided with your telephone.Setup
10Getting StartedSpare Battery Charger/Power Backup FeaturePower Guard FeatureThe  i 5871  uses the spare battery charger in the Base Unit to provide power backup inthe event of a power failure or outage. With fully charged battery cells in the spare batterycharger, you will be able to place and receive calls from the Handset only, for up to 2 1/2hours during a power outage.The spare battery cells can also be used to replace drained Handset battery cells, ensuringuninterrupted use. The spare battery cells are optional and can be purchased separately.NOTE: When using your i 5871 during Power Backup mode, audio quality may becompromised due to reduced power availability.Installation1.  Open the spare battery charger by pressing the release button, located on the right-hand side of the Base Unit. A drawer will open to reveal the spare battery compartment.2.  Place the battery cells in the spare battery charger  with the positive and negativepoles  aligned in the battery compartment.3.  Push the drawer closed. The spare battery charger takes 24 hours to fully chargedrained battery cells.To order battery cells, Headsets and additional Handsets (model i 5808),call VTech Customer Service at 1-800-595-9511. Follow the above steps.NOTE: The 15-digit BASE ID Code may contain numbers and characters, including 0through 9, as well as *. Make sure you enter all 15 digits.After charging, the screen will display:•Enter the BASE ID Code located on the underside of theBase Unit.•Press OK to complete the registration process.Wait approximately 15 - 60 seconds. You will hear confirmation beeps from the Base andHandset. The newly registered Handset will now be assigned the lowest extension numbernot previously assigned to a different system Handset (1- 8).If you do not enter the correct digit sequence, you will see Invalid Base ID! and hear anerror tone. Press the left NavKey     to backpace or press the right softkey   toerase a character, and carefully re-enter the Base ID Code.
14Getting StartedHandset and Base IndicatorsLine In Use Indicator•On steady with one or more numbers next to it, indicating which exten-sions are using the line. For example,    12 indicates that Handset 1 andHandset 2 are on an outside call.•Indicates when a parallel set is in use.•Lit when the answering machine is answering an incoming call.Handset Number Indicator•Indicates the Handset number. It's permanently displayed at the top leftcorner after the Handset has found the Base.Searching for Base Indicator• Indicates that the Handset is searching for the Base.Intercom Indicator• On steady with the extension numbers currently on an intercom call. 16Basic OperationHandset MenuNavigation Keys (NavKeys):•Press any NavKey to display the Main Menu. Press the NavKeys (left, right, up anddown) to maneuver through menus. Press the middle NavKey to select the highlightedmenu item.Menu Shortcuts•When viewing menu options, pressing the corresponding number on the dialing pad willautomatically select that item.•For example, in the Main Menu screen, pressing the 1 key will automatically take youto the Intercom menu screen, pressing the 6 key will automatically take you to theSettings menu screen, and so on through all 6 menu options.•Similarly, when viewing a list menu, pressing the corresponding number will automati-cally select that option (and save it, if necessary). For example, pressing the 2 keywhen in the Appearance screen will select and save the Green option.Main MenuPress any NavKey to display the 6 menu options. Thenuse the Navkeys to navigate to the desired menu option.You can also press the dialing key assigned for each icon(see information below for the assigned key numbers), toactivate that menu option.Intercom   (dialing key 1) - Talk betweenHandsets(s), or use to page the cordless Handset(s).Phonebook   (dialing key 2) - Enter and retrieveup to 50 names and phone numbers, each can be assigned a distinctive ring andimage.Calls Log   (dialing key 3) - Review Caller ID data; select and dial from theCaller ID data or from the Redial list which contains the last 10 phone numbersdialed.Pictures    (dialing key 4) - Choose from the many preset images or downloadnew images into the Handset to be used as your idle screen (wall paper) or assignan image to a specific phonebook directory.Sounds & Alerts   (dialing key 5) - Record custom sound clips, turn ringer andvibrate feature on and off, select main ringer tone, turn tones (low battery, keypad,and out-of-range) on or off.Settings   (dialing key 6) - Set the time, adjust screen contrast, reset to de-fault settings, change color of the text, register new Handsets, change screenlanguage.Press the NavKeys to navigate to the desired menu option, then press the middle NavKeyto select the highlifhted option. You can also press the dialing key assigned to each menuitem. The top menu is assigned to dialing key 1 and so forth on down the menu.NOTE: After 30 seconds of inactivity, your Handset will go into screen saver mode.While in screen saver mode the Handset will display a clock and new calls count (if youhave new calls). To illuminate the screen, read the clock and see the new calls count,simply press the volume button on the right side of the Handset.

If you subsribe to Caller ID, this feature will setand update the clock. Use the number keys to set or change the time.Contrast (dialing key 3) - This option allows you to adjust the Handset screencontrast.Phone Setup (dialing key4) - This option allows you to return the Handset toEnter Base ID and change the TONE/PULSE  setting.Language (dialing key 5, preset to English) - This option allows you to changethe screen prompts to English, Spanish or French.Reset Settings (dialing key 6) - This option allows you to return the Handset tofactory preset settings. Then choose animage in one of the three menu options (My Pictures, Images or Emotions). Once youhave selected the image, press the   softkey to set the image as your wallpaper. Youwill receive a message on the screen confirming Wallpaper Set! and an audio confirmation.To assign a personal image into your Handset, see Picture Download on page 26 forinstructions.Clear a Wallpaper imageTo clear a wallpaper image, select the icon Pictures  in the main menu. Select ClearWallpaper using the NavKeys. Then press the middle NavKey or left softkey to clear thewallpaper.Press the NavKeys to navigate to the desired option and to make the change, or press thedialing key that is assigned to the icon. To confirm, press the middle NavKey or pressthe SAVE softkey.
25Basic OperationRecordable RingerRecord a RingerYou can easily record a unique ringer to be used as either your Default Ringer or for aDistinctive Ringer assigned to a specific phonebook directory. You can record with eitherthe provided Audio Patch Cord (not the USB cord), or with the Handset microphone. Youmay record up to 9 unique ringers for a maximum of 10 seconds each.Cued-up music typically produces the best sounding recorded ringer. It is recommended tobegin recording your ringer at the beginning of a song, rather than a portion from the middleto produce an audibly pleasing custom ringer.To record a ringer, follow these steps:•Select the Sounds & Alerts icon   in the Main Menu.•Select the Sound Clips icon          .•If you are using the Audio Patch Cord, insert the 3.5mm plug (the larger end) into theheadset jack of your PC or audio source. Insert the 2.5mm plug (the smaller end) intothe Headset jack on the side of the i 5871 Handset.You can listen to the playing music through your Handset speaker after connectingthe Audio Patch Cord and selecting the Record Preview menu option. Adjust therecording volume at the audio source. To begin recording, press RECORD. If youwant to use the Handset microphone to record ringers, select the Record Clipmenu option. After the beep, and with the Handset microphone facing the audiosource, start recording.NOTE: If the memory is full, the Handset will prompt Clip memory full!•Hit the STOP softkey stop the recording.•After recording, you may PLAY or SAVE the melody. If you choose SAVE, you will beprompted to Enter Clip Name. Enter a name (up to 8 characters) for the recording. Ifyou make a mistake, press the   softkey to backspace. Press SAVE to confirm.Clip has been saved will display. The melody will be stored in the My Clips section.You can listen to all of your recorded musical ringers in My Clips. If you want, when inMy Clips, you can press DELETE then YES to erase one of them.       NOTE: When you want to use the Handset microphone to record ringers, do not       insert the Audio Patch Cord into the headset jack.Note: Your i 5871 Handset is preset with many musical ringer options (i.e. Jazz,R&B, Reggae, Rock, etc) for you to use as your default ringer or a distinctiveringer. Three of them are protected, you can’t replace them.You can replace theother 6 preset ringers with your own. You can also record your own ringers inanother 3 blank locations in My Clips. You will find 10 additional sound clips exclud-ing those preset in the Handset on the accompanying CD-ROM.
26Basic OperationDownload Your Own ImageDo you have a favorite image stored in your personal computer that you would liketo use as your i 5871 Handset wallpaper or to assign to one of your 50 availablephonebook directories? Using the provided Image Editor Software, you can viewand convert your image. Once you have selected your file and viewed your image inthe software, use the included USB cord to send the converted image directly intothe Handset. You’ll start by downloading the software into your computer:One-Time Software Installation1. Insert the enclosed Image Editor Tool CD into your personal computer.2. You will see a pop-up window giving you three options:a. Install/Uninstall the Image Editor Software.b. Browse the installation CD.c. Visit Vtech on the web.To install the software, click on the Install/Uninstall the Image Editor Software icon and follow the download instructions.3. After the installation process is complete, you will find an Image Editor Softwareicon   on your PC desktop. Click on this icon to run the Image Editor software.Image DownloadOnce you have installed the software, follow these steps to view and convert your se-lected image.•Click on the OPEN open icon. Then the pictures in the accompanied CD-ROMDisc can be found automatically. Or navigate to the directory where your desired imagefile is stored, and open the file.•You will see your image displayed in the middle of the screen and inside the telephone     display on the right. 27Basic Operation•Before downloading your image, make sure that the provided USB cord is correctlyinstalled into your computer (using the large end of the connector) and Handset(using the small end of the connector connector). After you have completed theimage editing process, press Send to Phone  and your image will be down-loaded into the Handset. Within a few seconds, you will see the new image displayedon your Handset and it will be saved in your My Pictures directory. You have theoption to either SET (set the picture to be wallpaper) or DELETE the downloadedimage. You can have a total of 14 images stored in the My Pictures directory. Youcan delete the preset images in this directory to make room for more, if you wish.Additional image samples can be found on the accompaying CD-ROM.NOTE: Do not leave the USB cord connected to the Handset for an extended period oftime as it will drain the battery cells.NOTE: All preset images in My Pictures can be deleted and replaced by new ones. All othermessages will be recorded in Mailbox 1.About Announcements• You can record two different announcements - one for normal answering and one forwhen you’ve set the system to play the announcement only.• Use normal answering mode (Announce Only OFF) when you want the system to recordcallers’ messages. Use Announce Only mode (set to ON) when you want to give infor-mation to callers without accepting messages.• If you choose not to record an announcement, the system answers with a prerecordedannouncement which says: “Hello. I’m unable to answer your call right now. Pleaseleave your name, number and a message after the tone.” The Announce Only pre-recorded announcement says: “Hello, I’m unable to answer your call right now. Pleasecall again. Thank you.”• By setting Announce Only to on or off, you decide which announcement your callerswill hear when the system answers a call (the system comes set for normal answering,with Announce Only turned OFF). Contact your local telephone company.You get noise, static, or a weak signal even when you're near the BaseUnit:• Household appliances plugged into the same circuit as the Base Unit can some-times cause interference. Try moving the appliance or the Base Unit to anotheroutlet.You get noise, static, or a weak signal when you’re away from the BaseUnit:• You may be out of range. Either move closer to the Base, or relocate the Base Unit.• The layout of your home may be limiting the range. Try moving the Base Unit toanother position.The Handset does not ring when you receive a call:• Make sure you have the ringer activated. Refer to the section(s) on Sounds&Alerts - Ringer Control in this User’s Manual.• Make sure the telephone line cord is plugged firmly into the Base Unit and thetelephone jack. Use Rechargeable Batteries Only warn-ing is displayed on the screen of your Handset or Base Unit:• Non-rechargeable batteries have been installed.
