6Getting StartedSetupCharging of the Handset Battery PackThe handset of your cordless telephone is powered by a rechargeable batterypack. It charges automatically whenever handset is in its charger.You should charge the batteries for 10-12 hours when you first receive yourphone. You will know the battery pack needs charg-ing when:•    The low battery message is displayed:• The handset seems completely dead, the LCDis completely clear and does not activate whenyou press the keys.NOTE: While in PLACE IN CHARGER (low battery) mode, the keypad sounds,backlighting and speakerphone features will not work. When the battery hasbeen charged, the features will return to their normal function.IMPORTANT:1. Do not dispose of the battery pack in a fire, it might explode.2. Do not open or mutilate the battery pack. Toxic substances may be re-leased,  causing harm to eyes or skin.3. Exercise care in handling batteries in order to prevent an accidental short ofthe charge contacts, potentially causing the batteries to overheat.Installation of Battery Pack in HandsetFollow the steps below:1. Remove the battery compartmentcover by pressing on the indentationand sliding downward. Place the newbattery pack in the handset with thepositive and negative poles alignedin the battery compartment.2. Replace the battery cover by slidingit upwards.3. If the new battery pack is not alreadycharged, place the handset in itscharger, and allow it to charge for10-12 hours. After initial charge, amaintenance charge of 8 hoursshould be sufficient.Connecting power to Base Unit/Hand-set Charger1.  Plug the power adapter into an electri-cal outlet, and the connector into theconnector jack at the bottom of the baseunit.2.  Choose the location for your handsetcharger, and plug its power supply into anelectrical outlet.
7Getting StartedSetupIMPORTANT! MAXIMUM PERFOR-MANCE OF YOUR CORDLESS TELE-PHONE SYSTEM:1. Install your base unit and extensionhandsets away from electronic equip-ment, such as personal computers,television sets and microwave ovens.2.  In locations where there are multiplecordless telephones, separate thebase units as far away as possible.3. Install your telephone equipmentaway from heat sources and sunlight.4.   Avoid excessive moisture, dust or ex-treme cold.        CAUTION: Use only the VTech power supply provided with your telephone.4. Do not dispose of the battery pack into household garbage. Please refer tothe information concerning proper battery recycling.5. Do not charge the battery pack with other electrical devices.Check Battery IndicatorIf you receive a check battery warning, it indicates one of the following:1. There isn't a battery pack in your handset. You’llneed to install a battery pack into your handset(see Installation and Charge of Batteries inHandset section on the previous page.)2. The battery pack has been installed incorrectly. Please reinstall (see Instal-lation of Battery Pack in Handset).Reset SwitchThe reset switch restores your base unit to the factory default setting. Thisdoes not affect your base unit power, RF operation, or any of the telephonehandset settings. This switch is recessed so that it cannot be pressed acciden-tally. For base unit features, please refer to the Administrator Settings sec-tion of the Base Feature Manual.Checking for Dial ToneAfter the battery is charged, press ON on the handset. The LCD displays PHONEand shows a call timer, and you will hear a dial tone. If not, see In Case ofDifficulty.
8Getting StartedWall MountingThe wall mount brackets are designed for use on standard wall mount platesonly. Wall mounting is optional. Only the handset chargers (not the main baseunit) can be wall mounted.1.    Plug the power adapters into electrical outlets, and the connector to the bottomof the handset charger.2. Line up the tabs on the wall mount brackets with the holes at the back of thehandset charger. Snap the wall mount bracket firmly in place.3.  Mount the handset charger on the wall. Position the handset charger so themounting studs will fit into the holes on the wall mount bracket. Slide hand-set charger down on the mounting studs until it locks into place.

10Getting StartedSTEP 1 Unplug the power cord for your cable/DSL modem. Make sure thatyou’ve turned your computer off, and that you do NOT plug in your IP8100-2 broadband telephone until instructed to do so.STEP 2 Disconnect the Ethernet cable from the back of your computer andthen plug it into the WAN port on your IP 8100-2.STEP 3 Using the Ethernet cable provided, connect one end into the PC port of yourIP 8100-2, and connect the other end into the Ethernet port on your PC.STEP 4 Reconnect the power cord for your cable/DSL modem and turn onpower to the unit.STEP 5 Plug the power cord into the POWER port on your IP 8100-2 and into anelectrical outlet. This turns your IP 8100-2 broadband telephone on.NOTE: After IP 8100-2 is powered on, update files will download. DO NOTinterrupt this registration process by unplugging the power or use theIP 8100-2 handsets until the ready indicator light on the front of IP8100-2 base has gone from flashing yellow to a steady green.STEP 6 Power up the computer.STEP 7 If you are a DSL user who is required to enter a user name andpassword (PPPoE) when accessing the Internet or a user with a staticIP address, you need to complete this step, otherwise skip this step.A.   Open a web browser such as Microsoft® Internet Explorer usingthe computer connected through your IP 8100-2 PC port. In the ad-dress or location field, type: http://192.168.15.1 and press ENTER.This displays the initial wizard screen.B.   Click Run Wizard to start the set-up.C.   Follow Wizard screens to complete the setup.For complete instructions on web configuration screens, please refer tothe Base Unit Features section of the user manual on the enclosed CD.Setup

13Basic OperationHandset OperationMaking Calls• Press ON (or, SPEAKER to use the handset speak-erphone feature). Dial the phone number.                                   -OR-• Dial the phone number first; then press ON (orSPEAKER).• Press OFF to end your call.Answering Calls• Press ON, SPEAKER or any dialing keys.• Press OFF to end your call.If the handset is in idle mode during an incomingcall, the ringer can be temporarily muted by press-ing OFF or MUTE, or by adjusting the ringer volumeusing the volume keys. If the ringing is muted com-pletely (by pressing OFF or MUTE, or adjusted toringer level 0 using the volume keys), the ringer muteicon will turn on indicating the ringing is being muted.This feature is useful when you need to lower or stopthe ringing quickly without actually answering the call.For example, someone is sleeping in the room andyou want to check the caller ID before answering, oryou want to ignore just the current call.This adjustment is temporary, and only last for the current ringing call. Theringer volume will return to it's normal setting once the call is answered orwhen the ringing stops.Adjust the Handset Volume (also applies to the handset speakerphone and headset)• The volume control is on the left edge of the handset. During a call, press VOLUME or   keys to adjust the listening volume to a comfortable level. When you reachthe maximum or minimum setting, a double-beepwill sound.Flash Function• You can use your IP 8100-2 with services suchas call waiting. When you receive a call waitingsignal, simply press the ON/FLASH key to switch to the new call. Press ON/FLASH again to switch back to the original call.Redial Funtion• Press REDIAL/PAUSE to display the last telephone number dialed from the hand-set (up to 32 digits). Use   or   to scroll through the five previously dialednumbers. When the beginning or the end of the redial list is reached, a doublebeep will sound.• When the desired number is reached, press ON or SPEAKER to dial.
14Basic OperationMute Function• During an active call, pressing the MUTE/DELETE key will disable the micro-phone. MICROPHONE MUTED will dis-play briefly. The screen will display:• Press MUTE/DELETE again to return tonormal two-way conversation. MICRO-PHONE ON will display briefly.Intercom Call• From the idle (off) mode, press INT. Thehandset (HS1) will display:ENTER HANDSET #• Select a number of the handset to becalled. The display will show: CALLINGHANDSET X (Where X is the handsetnumber.)• The other handset will ring and thescreen will display:HANDSET X IS CALLING• Press INT, PHONE, SPEAKER or any ofthe dial pad keys on handset X to answerthe intercom call. The screens will dis-play:• Press INT or OFF on either handset toend the call.NOTE: If handset X is out of range, or on anexternal call, when HS1 attempts to inter-com it, the display of HS1 will show:Handset OperationENTERHANDSET #CALLINGHANDSET XHANDSET XIS CALLING• Pressing OFF will exit the redial review list.NOTE: When the redial memory is empty, and REDIAL is pressed, a double beepwill sound.• When the desired entry displays, press DELETE. 15Basic OperationHandset OperationENTER HANDSET #Call Forward• While on an external call, one handset(HS1) can forward it to any other hand-set:• Press INT on HS1, it will display:• Enter the handset number you wish toforward, HS1 will display:• HS X can press ON to answer the call.NOTE: If HS X does not respond in about30 seconds, the external call will be returnedto HS1 and the display will show:If the returned call is not answered within30 seconds, the external call will end auto-matically.Conference CallIt is possible to establish a conference be-tween two handsets and the external line.If a handset already has a connection to theexternal line, and another handset goes off-hook, a conference is immediately estab-lished. Both handsets will show:Base OperationFrom the base unit, you can use the PAGEkey to locate the handsets.• When the handset is in idle, press PAGE.The handsets will display:• To end the page at the handset, press ON,SPEAKER or any dialing keys.• To end the page at the base, press PAGE.

Each memorylocation can hold up to 32 digits for the number and 16 characters for the name.NOTE: The handsets share a common phonebook, which is stored in the base. Thismeans that entries inserted by one handset are available for all handsets, and if onedeletes a phonebook entry, it will disappear from all handsets.When one handset is accessing the phonebook, the other handsets cannot access it atthe same time. If this is attempted, NOT AVAILABLE AT THIS TIME will display.Storing a New Entry• Press MENU.• With PHONEBOOK highlighted, pressSEL.• Press   to select STORE. PressSEL.• You will be prompted to ENTERNUMBER. Use the dialing keys toenter the number you wish to storein the phonebook. Press the MUTE/DELETE key to backspace andmake corrections. Press SEL.• You will then be prompted to ENTERNAME. Use the dialing keys to spellthe name. Press SEL.• You will hear a confirmation tone, andthe new phonebook entry will displaybriefly.NOTES:• If the phonebook is full, the handsetwill display PHONEBOOK IS FULL.• You can also press REDIAL/PAUSEthen   or   to scroll to the previouslydialed number from the redial list youwant to store in the phonebook. Press and holdREDIAL/PAUSE to add pauses if necessary.You can also press REDIAL/PAUSE, then or   to scroll to the previously dialednumber from redial list which you want tostore in the phonebook. Press SEL.• Press SEL to confirm the number and entername edit mode.• Press MUTE/DELETE to backspace and usethe digit keys to enter the correct name.• Press SEL  to confirm the change. 19Basic OperationCalls Log (Caller ID - Call Waiting)Caller ID - Call Waiting IDYour IP 8100-2 is capable of displaying the name and/or number of the partycalling before you answer the phone (caller ID). It is also capable of displayingcaller ID information in conjunction with a call waiting alert signal (call waitingcaller ID). With call waiting caller ID, the caller ID data is displayed so you candecide whether to answer the incoming call, or continue with your current con-versation. Your IP 8100-2 can hold up to 50 CID entries.These are subscription services, provided by Vonage.When one handset is accessing the call log, the other handsets can notaccess it at the same time. If this is attempted, NOT AVAILABLE AT THISTIME will display.Due to regional incompatibilities, caller ID information may not be availablefor every call you receive. In addition, the calling party may intentionallyblock their name and/or phone number from being sent.• As new caller ID/call waiting ID recordsare received, your handset displays willalert you to the new caller ID records, forexample:• After you review all new caller ID records,the NEW call indication will be turned offand the screen will show:• If the call log is full, the oldest entry is de-leted to make room for the new call. If thecall log is empty when you try to enter tocall log review, the following message isdisplayed:Reviewing Caller IDYou can review the caller ID record via themenu, as described below or by pressing the key in idle whereby the handset jumps di-rectly to the caller ID review.• In idle mode, press MENU to enter the menu.• Press   key to scroll to CALL LOG.HANDSET 15 NEW CALLSNEWHANDSET 1

If unable todetect the number, ENTER NUMBER will beprompted. A confirmation tone will sound and theprevious caller ID record will be displayed onthe screen.• To delete all the caller ID records, press andhold the DELETE key. The screen will askyou DELETE ALL CALLS? Press SEL for con-firmation. Or, press OFF to return to the CIDrecord previously displayed.VTech Com

The current ringer volume willbe shown:• Press   and   keys or enter digit 0-6 tothe desired ringer volume. The current ringtone is played and the volume bar is in-creased/decreased each time the setting isadjusted. At the lowest setting, display willshow:• The handset will not ring when a call comesin if ringer volume is set to the lowest set-ting.• Press SEL to confirm the setting.Ringer Tone• From the idle (off) mode, press MENU then or   key to RINGER TONE.• Press SEL. You will be prompted to chooseINTERCOM CALL or OUTSIDE CALL.Press   or   to select the desired option.• Press SEL again. You can then use   oror enter digit 0-9 to sample the ring tones.The screen, will show:• Press SEL to confirm your setting.Key Tone (preset to ON)• From the idle (off) mode, press MENU then or   to KEY TONE.• Press SEL. The current setting will beshown. Press   or   to scroll to ON orOFF. When set to on, the handset will emit abeep whenever a key is pressed.• When the desired option is shown, pressSEL to confirm your selection.>KEY TONELANGUAGE

Press   or to scroll from English to French or Spanish.• Press SEL to confirm the setting.Message WaitingYour IP 8100-2 is capable of detecting a mes-sage waiting signal generated by Vonage.Once you have reviewed all new mes-sages, the message waiting alert will automati-cally be turned off.Handset SettingsClear Message WaitingIf, after reviewing all new voicemail messages,the message waiting alert still remains on thescreen and the MESSAGE WAITING LED on baseis still flashing, you can manually remove theindication from the screen and turn the LED off.• From the idle (off) mode, press MENU then or    to CLEAR MSG WAIT.• Press SEL then the display will ask you TURNINDICATOR OFF? Press SEL again to con-firm. To exit, press OFF.
24Advanced OperationYour IP 8100-2 handset is equipped with a 2.5mm headset jack for use with anoptional accessory headset for handsfree operation. If you choose to use theheadset option, you must obtain an optional accessory headset, which is com-patible with the IP 8100-2.To purchase a headset, visit us on the web at www.vtechphones.com or callVTech Customer Service at 1-800-595-9511.Once you have a compatible 2.5mm headset, locate the headset jack on theIP 8100-2 handset. Connect the plug on the headset cord to the jack (under asmall rubber flap) on the cordless handset. The plug should fit securely. Do notforce the connection.NOTE:• Whenever a compatible headset isconnected to the cordless handset,the microphone on the handset willbe muted. This is done to limit the ef-fect of background noise.• When a compatible headset is con-nected to the cordless handset, yourspeakerphone feature will be dis-abled. To use your speakerphone fea-ture, simply disconnect the headsetfrom the handset.Belt ClipThe IP 8100-2 is also equipped with adetachable belt clip. Align the pins on theinside edge of the clip with the notcheson the sides of the handset. The belt clipshould snap securely into place. Do notforce the connection.Headset Operation
