IMPORTANT PRODUCT INFORMATIONSafety InformationThis symbol is to alert you to important operating or servicing instructions that may appear in this user’s manual. Always follow basic safety precautions when using this product to reduce the risk of injury, fire, or electric shock.1 Read and understand all instructions in the user’s manual. Observe all markings on the product.2 Avoid using a telephone during a thunderstorm.There may be a slight chance of electric shock from lightning.3 Do not use a telephone in the vicinity of a gas leak. If you suspect a gas leak, report it immediately, but use atelephone away from the area where gas is leaking. If thisproduct is a cordless model, make sure the base is also awayfrom the area.4 Do not use this product near water, or when you arewet. For example, do not use it in a wet basement or shower,or next to a swimming pool, bathtub, kitchen sink, or laundrytub. Do not use liquids or aerosol sprays for cleaning. If theproduct comes in contact with any liquids, unplug any line orpower cord immediately. Do not plug the product back inuntil it has dried thoroughly.5 Install this product in a protected location where noone can trip over any line or power cords. Protect cords fromdamage or abrasion.6 If this product does not operate normally, read “InCase of Difficulty” in the user’s manual. If you cannotsolve the problem, or if the product is damaged, refer to theLimited Warranty. Do not open this product except as maybe directed in your user’s manual. 27 If this product has user-replaceable batteries, replacebatteries only as described in your user’s manual. Donot burn or puncture batteries — they contain causticchemicals.8 If this product has a three-prong (grounding) plug ora polarized plug with one wide prong, it may not fitin non-polarized outlets. Do not defeat the purpose ofthese plugs. If they do not fit in your outlet, the outlet shouldbe replaced by an electrician.CAUTION: Use only the power adapter provided with this product. To obtain a replacement, call 1 800 222–3111.SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONSEspecially About Cordless TelephonesPrivacy:  The same features that make a cordless phoneconvenient create some limitations. Telephone calls aretransmitted between the base and the handset by radio waves,so there is a possibility that your cordless phone conversationscould be intercepted by radio receiving equipment within rangeof the cordless handset. For this reason, you should notthink of cordless phone conversations as being as privateas those on corded phones.Electrical Power: The base unit of this cordless telephonemust be connected to a working electrical outlet. The electrical outlet should not be controlled by a wall switch. Callscannot be made from the handset if the base unit isunplugged or switched off, or if the electrical power isinterrupted.Potential TV Interference: Some cordless telephonesoperate at frequencies that may cause interference to TVs andVCRs. To minimize or prevent such interference, do not placethe base unit of the cordless telephone near or on top of a TVor VCR. If interference is experienced, moving the cordlesstelephone farther away from the TV or VCR will often reduceor eliminate the interference. (Applies to 25-channel cordlessphones only.)Rechargeable Batteries: This product contains either Nickel-Cadmium or Nickel-Metal Hydride rechargeable batteries.Exercise care in handling batteries in order not to short thebattery with conducting material such as rings, bracelets, andkeys. 3Nickel-Cadmium Rechargeable Batteries: Must be recycled or disposed of properly. Do not dispose of inhousehold garbage. Do not burn or puncture. Like otherbatteries of this type, if burned or punctured, they could releasecaustic material which could cause injury.The RBRC™Seal means that the manufacturer is  voluntarily participating in an industry program to collect and recycle Nickel-Cadmium rechargeable batteries when taken out of servicewithin the United States. These batteries may betaken to a participating local retailer of replacement batteries orrecycling center. Or you may call 1 800 8BATTERY forlocations accepting spent Nickel-Cadmium Batteries.Nickel-Metal Hydride Rechargeable Batteries: Disposeof these batteries in a safe manner. Do not burn or puncture.Like other batteries of this type, if burned or punctured, theycould release caustic material which could cause injury.Precautions for Users ofImplanted Cardiac PacemakersCardiac Pacemakers  (applies only to 900 MHz DigitalCordless Telephones): Wireless Technology Research, LLC (WTR), an independentresearch entity, led a multidisciplinary evaluation of theinterference between portable wireless telephones andimplanted cardiac pacemakers. Supported by the U.S. Foodand Drug Administration, WTR had recommended tophysicians that:PACEMAKER PATIENTS• Should keep wireless phones at least six inches from thepacemaker• Should  NOT place wireless phones directly over thepacemaker, such as in a breast pocket, when it is turned ON• Should use the wireless phone at the ear opposite thepacemakerWTR’s evaluation did not identify any risk to bystanders withpacemakers from other persons using wireless phones.91-005229-080-000.qxd  4/8/05  12:10 PM  Page 3
4Especially About Telephone Answering SystemsTwo-Way Recording: This unit does not sound warningbeeps to let the other party know that the call is being recorded.To ensure that you are in compliance with any federal or stateregulations regarding recording a telephone call, you should startthe recording process and then inform the other party that youare recording the call.FCC and ACTA InformationIf this equipment was approved for connection to the telephonenetwork prior to July 23, 2001, it complies with Part 68 of theFederal Communications Commission (FCC) rules. If theequipment was approved after that date, it complies with thePart 68 rules and with Technical Requirements for Connectionof Equipment to the Telephone Network adopted by theAdministrative Council for Terminal Attachments (ACTA). Weare required to provide you with the following information.1 Product identifier and REN informationThe label on the back or bottom of this equipment contains,among other things, an identifier indicating product approvaland the Ringer Equivalence Number (REN).  Thisinformation must be provided to your local telephonecompany upon request. For equipment approved prior toJuly 23, 2001, the product identifier is preceded by thephrase “FCC Reg No.” and the REN is listed separately. Forequipment approved after that date, the product identifier ispreceded by “US” and a colon (:), and the REN is encodedin the product identifier without a decimal point as the sixthand seventh characters following the colon. For example,the product identifier US:AAAEQ03T123XYZ wouldindicate an REN of 0.3.The REN is used to determine how many devices you mayconnect to your telephone line and still have them ring whenyou are called. In most, but not all areas, the sum of all RENsshould be five (5.0) or less. You may want to contact yourlocal telephone company for more information.2 Connection and use with the nationwide telephonenetworkThe plug and jack used to connect this equipment to thepremises wiring and the telephone network must complywith the applicable Part 68 rules and technical requirementsadopted by ACTA. 5be connected to a compatible modular jack that is alsocompliant. An RJ11 jack should normally be used forconnecting to a single line and an RJ14 jack for two lines. SeeInstallation Instructions in the user’s manual. This equipmentmay not be used with Coin Telephone Lines or with PartyLines. If you have specially wired alarm dialing equipmentconnected to your telephone line, ensure the connection ofthis equipment does not disable your alarm equipment. Ifyou have questions about what will disable alarm equipment,consult your telephone company or qualified installer.3 Repair instructionsIf this equipment is malfunctioning, it must be unplugged fromthe modular jack until the problem has been corrected.Repairs to this telephone equipment can only be made by themanufacturer or its authorized agents. For repairprocedures, follow the instructions outlined under theLimited Warranty.4 Rights of the telephone companyIf this equipment is causing harm to the telephone network,the telephone company may temporarily discontinue yourtelephone service. The telephone company is required tonotify you before interrupting service. If advance notice is notpractical, you will be notified as soon as possible. You will begiven the opportunity to correct the problem and thetelephone company is required to inform you of your rightto file a complaint with the FCC. Your telephone companymay make changes in its facilities, equipment, operation, orprocedures that could affect the proper functioning of thisproduct. The telephone company is required to notify you ifsuch changes are planned.5 Hearing aid compatibility If this product is equipped with a corded or cordless handset,it is hearing aid compatible.6 Programming/testing of emergency numbersIf this product has memory dialing locations, you may chooseto store police, fire department and emergency medicalservice telephone numbers in these locations. If you do,please keep three things in mind:aWe recommend that you also write the telephonenumber on the directory card (if applicable), so that youcan still dial the emergency number manually if thememory dialing feature doesn’t work.bThis feature is provided only as a convenience, and themanufacturer assumes no responsibility for customerreliance upon the memory feature.91-005229-080-000.qxd  4/8/05  12:10 PM  Page 5
6cTesting the emergency telephone numbers you havestored is not recommended. However, if you do make acall to an emergency number:• You must remain on the line and briefly explain thereason for the call before hanging up.• Programming/testing of emergency numbers shouldbe performed during off-peak hours, such as in theearly morning or late evening, when the emergencyservices tend to be less busy.Interference Information:Part 15 of FCC RulesSome telephone equipment generates, uses, and can radiate radio-frequency energy and, if not installed and used properly, may cause interference to radio and television reception.This product has been tested and found to meet the standards for a Class B digital device, as specified in Part 15 ofthe FCC Rules. These specifications are designed to provide reasonable protection against such interference in a residential installation. However, there is no guarantee thatinterference will not occur in a particular installation.If this product causes interference to radio, VCR or television reception when it is in use, you might correct the interference with any one or all of these measures:— Where it can be done safely, re-orient the receiving radio, VCR or television antenna.— To the extent possible, relocate the radio, VCR, televisionor other receiver with respect to the telephone equipment.— If this telephone product runs on AC power, plug yourproduct into an AC outlet that’s not on the same circuit asone used by your radio, VCR or television.Modifications to this product, not expressly approved bythe manufacturer, could void the user’s authority tooperate the equipment.To ensure safety of users, the FCC has established criteria forthe amount of radio frequency energy that can be safelyabsorbed by a user or bystander according to the intendedusage of the product. This product has been tested and foundto comply with the FCC criteria. The handset  may be safelyheld against the ear of the user. 7Limited WarrantyThe AT&T brands are used under license. Any repair,replacement or warranty service, and all questions about thisproduct should be directed to: Advanced American Telephones,1 800 222–3111 or www.telephones.att.com.1 What does this limited warranty cover?The manufacturer of this AT&T-branded product, AdvancedAmerican Telephones (“AAT”), warrants to the holder of avalid proof of purchase (“CONSUMER” or “YOU”) thatthe product and all accessories provided by AAT in the salespackage (“PRODUCT”) are free from material defects inmaterial and workmanship, pursuant to the following termsand conditions, when installed and used normally and inaccordance with operation instructions. This limited warrantyextends only to the CONSUMER for  PRODUCTSpurchased and used in the United States of America.2WHAT WILL AAT DO IF THE PRODUCT IS NOT FREEFROM MATERIAL DEFECTS IN MATERIALS ANDWORKMANSHIP DURING THE LIMITED WARRANTY PERIOD(“MATERIALLY DEFECTIVE PRODUCT”)?During the limited warranty period, AAT’s authorizedservice representative will repair or replace, at AAT’soption, without charge, a MATERIALLY DEFECTIVEPRODUCT. If AAT repairs this PRODUCT, AAT mayuse new or refurbished replacement parts. If AAT choosesto replace this PRODUCT, AAT may replace it with a newor refurbished PRODUCT of the same or similar design.AAT will return repaired or replacement PRODUCTS toYOU in working condition.  AAT will retain defective parts, modules, or equipment.Repair or replacement of PRODUCT, at AAT’s option, isyour exclusive remedy. YOU should expect the repair orreplacement to take approximately 30 days.3HOW LONG IS THE LIMITED WARRANTY PERIOD?The limited warranty period for the PRODUCT extends forONE (1) YEAR from the date of purchase. 84WHAT IS NOT COVERED BY THIS LIMITED WARRANTY?This limited warranty does not cover:a PRODUCT that has been subjected to misuse, accident,shipping or other physical damage, improper installation,abnormal operation or handling, neglect, inundation, fire,water, or other liquid intrusion; orb PRODUCT that has been damaged due to repair,alteration, or modification by anyone other than anauthorized service representative of AAT; orc PRODUCT to the extent that the problem experiencedis caused by signal conditions, network reliability or cableor antenna systems; ord PRODUCT to the extent that the problem is caused byuse with non-AAT accessories; ore PRODUCT whose warranty/quality stickers, productserial number plates or electronic serial numbers havebeen removed, altered or rendered illegible; orf PRODUCT purchased, used, serviced, or shipped forrepair from outside the United States, or used forcommercial or institutional purposes (including but notlimited to PRODUCTS used for rental purposes); org PRODUCT returned without valid proof of purchase(see 6 below); orhcharges for installation or setup, adjustment of customercontrols, and installation or repair of systems outside the unit.5HOW DO YOU GET WARRANTY SERVICE?To obtain warranty service in the United States of America,call 1 800 222–3111 for instructions regarding where toreturn the PRODUCT. Before calling for service, pleasecheck the user’s manual. A check of the PRODUCTcontrols and features may save YOU a service call.Except as provided by applicable law, YOU assume the riskof loss or damage during transit and transportation and areresponsible for delivery or handling charges incurred in thetransport of PRODUCT(S) to the service location. AATwill return repaired or replaced PRODUCT under thislimited warranty to YOU, transportation, delivery orhandling charges prepaid. AAT assumes no risk for damageor loss of the PRODUCT in transit.If the PRODUCT failure is not covered by this limitedwarranty, or proof of purchase does not meet the terms ofthis limited warranty, AAT will notify YOU and will requestthat YOU authorize the cost of repair prior to any furtherrepair activity. 96WHAT MUST YOU RETURN WITH THE PRODUCT TOGET WARRANTY SERVICE?YOU must:areturn the entire original package and contents includingthe PRODUCT to the AAT service location along witha description of the malfunction or difficulty;binclude “valid proof of purchase” (sales receipt)identifying the PRODUCT purchased (PRODUCTmodel) and the date of purchase or receipt (keep a copyfor your records); andcprovide your name, complete and correct mailingaddress, and telephone number.  7OTHER LIMITATIONSThis warranty is the complete and exclusive agreementbetween YOU and AAT. It supersedes all other written ororal communications related to this PRODUCT.  AATprovides no other warranties for this PRODUCT. Thewarranty exclusively describes all of AAT’s responsibilitiesregarding the PRODUCT. There are no other expresswarranties. No one is authorized to make modifications tothis limited warranty and YOU should not rely on any suchmodification.  State Law Rights:  This warranty gives YOU specific legalrights, and YOU may also have other rights which vary fromstate to state.  Limitations:Implied warranties, including those of fitness for aparticular purpose and merchantability (anunwritten warranty that the PRODUCT is fit forordinary use) are limited to one year from date ofpurchase.  Some states do not allow limitations on how long an impliedwarranty lasts, so the above limitation may not apply toYOU.  In no event shall AAT be liable for any indirect,special, incidental, consequential, or similar damages(including, but not limited to lost profits or revenue,inability to use the PRODUCT, or other associatedequipment, the cost of substitute equipment, andclaims by third parties) resulting from the use of thisPRODUCT.  Some states do not allow the exclusion or limitation ofincidental or consequential damages, so the above limitationor exclusion may not apply to YOU.
