The prongs are not designed to hold the plug in place if it is plugged into a ceiling, under-the-table or cabinet outlet.••Battery installationInstall the battery as shown below.Slide the battery compartment cover towards the center of the handset until it clicks into place.3. Place the handset in the telephone base or charger to charge.4.CHARGE light remains on when charging.Plug the battery connector securely into the socket.1. Place the battery with the label  THIS SIDE UP facing up and the wires inside the battery compartment.2.If the handset will not be used for a long time, disconnect and remove the battery to prevent possible leakage.•Battery chargingOnce you have installed the battery, the screen indicates the battery status (see the table below). For best performance, keep the handset in the telephone base or charger when not in use. The battery is fully charged after 10 hours of continuous charging. Refer to the online user’s manual for battery operating times.If you place the handset in the telephone base or charger without plugging in the battery, the screen displays NO BATTERY.•Battery indicators Battery status ActionThe screen is blank, or shows PLACE IN CHARGER and   ashes.The battery has no charge or very little charge. The handset cannot be used.Charge without interruption (at least 30 minutes).The screen shows  LOW BATTERY and   ashes. The battery has enough charge to be used for a  short time.Charge without interruption (at least 30 minutes).The screen shows HANDSET X.The battery is charged. To keep the battery charged, place it in the telephone base or charger when not in use.
3Tabletop to wall mount installationThe telephone comes ready for tabletop use. Follow the steps below to mount your telephone on a wall. Route the telephone line cord through the hole on the wall mount bracket and plug it into the telephone wall jack. Route the power cord out of the telephone base and plug it into an electrical outlet not controlled by a wall switch.3. Align the holes on the bracket with the standard wall plate and slide the bracket down until it locks securely. Bundle the telephone line cord  and power adapter cord neatly  with twist ties.4.Position the lower portion grooves on the telephone base to the lower portion tabs (marked B) on the wall mount bracket. Make sure the upper portion grooves of the telephone base are above the upper portion tabs (marked A) on the wall mount bracket. 4Using the handset menuPress MENU when the phone is not in use.Press  or  until the screen displays the desired feature menu.Press SELECT to enter that menu.To return to the previous menu, press CANCEL.To return to idle mode, press and hold CANCEL.BluetoothTo use a Bluetooth enabled cell phone with your DS6511, you must rst pair and connect your Bluetooth device(s) with the telephone base. All DS6511 handsets can be used to make or answer calls on the cell phone line. Bluetooth wireless technology operates within a short range (a maximum of approximately 30 feet). When you pair a Bluetooth cell phone or Bluetooth headset to the telephone base, make sure your Bluetooth device is close to the telephone base to maintain sufcient signal strength.Pair and connect your rst Bluetooth cell phonePress and hold   1/   2 on the telephone base for four seconds. The   1/   2 light turns on.Turn on the Bluetooth feature of your cell phone. Once your cell phone nds your VTech phone, press the appropriate key on your cell phone to continue the pairing process.Enter the PIN of the telephone base into your cell phone. The PIN number is 0000.Download directoryPress MENU when the phone is not in use.Scroll to  Bluetooth then press SELECT.Scroll to  Download dir then press SELECT.Scroll to select the desired cell phone, then press SELECT.Telephone settingsDefault settings are indicated by an asterisk(*).Screen display Function OptionsLCD Language Set the screen display language. 5The following are some of the telephone features you may wish to set. Refer to Telephone settings in the online user’s manual for detailed instructions on setting all telephone features.Ringer volume (handset)You can adjust the ringer volume level, or turn the ringer off.Press MENU when the handset is not in use.Scroll to  Ringers then press SELECT.Scroll to choose the desire line, then press SELECT.Press  or  to adjust the volume, then press SELECT to save.If the handset ringer volume is set to off, that handset is silenced for all incoming calls except paging tone.Silent modeYou can turn on the silent mode for a period of time. During the silent mode, the handset ringer tone is off and the answering system turns on automatically.Press and hold # when the handset is not in use.Use the dialing keys (1-9) to enter the hour of silent mode.Set date and timeIf you subscribe to caller ID service, the day, month and time are set automatically with each incoming call. You can also set the date and time manually.Press MENU when the handset is not in use.Scroll to select  Set date/time, then press SELECT.Use the dialing keys (0-9) to enter the month, date and year, then press SELECT.Use the dialing keys (0-9) to enter the hour and minute.Press  or  to choose AM or PM, or press 2 for AM or 7 for PM. Press SELECT to save. Voicemail indicatorsIf you subscribe to voicemail service offered by your telephone service provider, NEW VOICEMAIL and   appear on the handset when you have new voicemail messages. Contact your telephone service provider for more information and assistance about using your voicemail service. Refer to Clear voicemail indicators in the online user’s manual on how to clear the voicemail indicators.Telephone operationMake a callPress  /HOME or  , and then dial the telephone number.Press  /CELL, enter the telephone number and then press SELECT.Answer a callPress  /HOME,  /CELL,   or any dialing key.End a callPress OFF or put the handset to the telephone base or charger.SpeakerphoneDuring a call, press   to switch between speakerphone and normal handset use.VolumeDuring a call, press  /VOLUME or  /VOLUME to adjust the listening volume.The handset earpiece volume setting and speakerphone volume setting are independent.MuteThe mute function allows you to hear the other party but the other party cannot hear you.During a call, press MUTE. The handset displays Muted.Press MUTE again to resume the conversation.Call waitingWhen you subscribe to call waiting service from your telephone service provider,  you hear an alert tone if there is an incoming call while you are on another call. Press FLASH to put the current call on hold and take the new call.Press FLASH at any time to switch back and forth between calls.Temporary ringer silencingWhen the telephone is ringing, you can temporarily silence the ringer of the handset without disconnecting the call. 6Temporary tone dialingIf you have pulse (rotary) service only, you can switch from pulse to tone dialing temporarily during a call.During a call, press  .Use the dialing keys to enter the relevant number. The telephone sends touch-tone signals.The telephone automatically returns to pulse dialing mode after you end the call.Find handsetUse this feature to nd all system handsets.To start paging:Press  /FIND HANDSET on the telephone base once and then release. All idle handsets ring and their screens show  ** PAGING **.To end paging:Press  /FIND HANDSET again on the telephone base once and then release.Press  /HOME,  /CELL,   or any dialing key on the handset.Place the handset in the telephone base or charger.Do not press and hold  /FIND HANDSET for more than four seconds. It may lead to handset deregistration. Redial list Each handset stores the last 10 telephone numbers dialed.To review and dial a number from the redial list:Press REDIAL when the handset is not in use.Press  ,  , oror REDIAL repeatedly until the desired entry displays.Press  /HOME or  /CELL to dial.To delete a redial entry:When the desired redial entry displays, press DELETE.Chain dialingUse this feature to initiate a dialing sequence from numbers stored in the directory, caller ID log or redial list while you are on a call. Chain dialing can be useful if you wish to access other numbers (such as bank account numbers or access codes) from the directory, caller ID log or redial list.To access a number in the directory, caller ID log or redial list while on a call:To enter the directory, press MENU, then scroll to  Directory, and then press SELECT.-OR-To enter the caller ID log, press MENU, then scroll to  Caller ID log, and then  press SELECT.-OR-To enter the redial list, press REDIAL.Press  or  to scroll to the desired entry.Press SELECT to dial the displayed number.Join a call in progressYou can use up to four system handsets at a time on an outside call. You can buy additional expansion handsets (DS6501) for this telephone base. You can register up to ve handsets to the telephone base.When a handset is on a call, press  /HOME,  /CELL,   or any dialing key on another handset to join the call.Press OFF to exit the call. The call continues until all handsets hang up.IntercomUse the intercom features for conversations between two handsets.Press MENU on your handset when not in use. Press  or  to scroll to  Intercom, then press SELECT. When you have three or more handsets, use the dialing keys to enter a destination handset number.To answer the intercom call, press  /HOME or   on the destination handset.To end an intercom call, press OFF or place the handset back in the telephone base or charger.Answer an incoming call during an intercom callIf you receive an incoming home call during an intercom call, there is an alert tone.To answer the outside call, press  /HOME. The intercom call ends automatically.To end the intercom call without answering the outside call, press OFF. 7Call transfer using intercomUse the intercom feature to transfer an outside call to another system handset.During a call, press MENU. Press  or  to scroll to  Intercom, then press SELECT. When you have three or more handsets, use the dialing keys to enter a destination handset number.To answer the intercom call, press  /HOME or  on the destination handset. The outside call is now on hold and both handsets show INTERCOM. You can have a private conversation with the destination handset.From this intercom call, you have the following options:  You can let the destination handset join you on the incoming home call in a      three-way conversation. Press  /HOME on the original handset.  You can transfer the call. Press OFF, or place your handset back        in the telephone base or charger. The destination handset then automatically      connects to the outside call.The destination handset can end the intercom call by pressing OFF, or by    placing the handset back in the telephone base or charger. The outside call    continues with the original system handset.DirectoryThe directory can store up to 200 entries and are shared by all system handsets.To add a directory entry:Press MENU when the handset is not in use.Scroll to  Directory then press SELECT. Scroll to  Add contact then press SELECT. Use the dialing keys to enter the number (up to 30 digits).     -OR-Copy a number from the redial list by pressing REDIAL and then press  ,  or REDIAL repeatedly to select a number. Press SELECT.Press SELECT to move to the name.Use the dialing keys to enter the name (up to 15 characters). Additional key presses show other characters of that particular key.Press SELECT to save.While entering names and numbers, you can:Press DELETE to backspace and erase a digit or character.Press and hold DELETE to erase the entire entry.Press and hold PAUSE to insert a dialing pause (for entering phone numbers only).Press  or  to move the cursor to the left or right.To review and dial from the directory:Entries are sorted alphabetically.Press   when the handset is not in use.Scroll to browse through the directory, or use the dialing keys to start a  name search.When the desired entry appears, press  /HOME or /CELL to dial.To edit a directory entry:When the desired entry displays, press SELECT.Use the dialing keys to edit the number, then press SELECT.Use the dialing keys to edit the name, then press SELECT to save.To delete a directory entry:When the desired entry displays, press DELETE.When the screen displays DELETE CONTACT?, press SELECT.Speed dialYou can copy up to 9 directory entries into the speed dial locations so that you can dial these numbers using fewer keys than usual.To store a speed dial entry:Press MENU when the handset is not in use.Scroll to  Directory then press SELECT. Scroll to  Speed dial, then press SELECT.Scroll to a desired speed dial location, then press SELECT.Scroll to a desired directory entry, then press SELECT to save.To dial a speed dial entry:Press and hold a dialing key (0-9, except 1) to display the desired speed dial entry when the handset is not in use.Press  /HOME,   or  /CELL to dial the displayed phone number.To delete a speed dial entry:When the desired entry displays, press DELETE.1.2.3.4.•••1.2.3.••3.4.5.••••1.2.3.1.2.3.1.2.1.2.3.4.5.1.2.
8Caller IDThis product supports caller ID services provided by most telephone service providers. Depending on your service subscription, you may see the caller’s name, number, date and time of calls that are sent by your telephone service provider after the rst or second ring.Caller ID logThe caller ID log stores up to 50 entries. If you answer a call before the caller information appears, it will not be saved in the caller ID log.The handset displays XX missed calls when there are calls that have not been reviewed in the caller ID log.If you want to erase the missed call indicator, press and hold CANCEL on the  idle handset.To review and dial a number in the caller ID log:Press CID when the handset is not in use.Scroll to browse through the caller ID log. When the desired entry appears:Press # (pound key) repeatedly to show different dialing options.Press 1 repeatedly if you need to add or remove 1 in front of the  phone number.Press  /HOME,   or  /CELL to dial the displayed number.To save a caller ID log entry to the directory:When the desired caller ID log entry displays, press SELECT.Use the dialing keys to modify the number, then press SELECT.Use the dialing keys to modify the name, then press SELECT to save.To delete one caller ID log entry:When the desired caller ID log entry displays, press DELETE.To delete all caller ID log entries:Press MENU when the handset is not in use. Scroll to  Caller ID log and then press SELECT. Scroll to  Del all calls and then press SELECT twice.Add and register a handsetThe handsets provided with your telephone system are already registered. Each handset is assigned a number that displays on the handset. Additional handsets registered to the telephone system are assigned numbers in the sequential order. This telephone system accommodates up to 2 handsets.You can add new handsets (DS6501, purchased separately) to your telephone system. Each handset must be registered with the telephone base before use.  When rst purchased and properly charged, each expansion handset shows  To register HS... and ...see manual alternately. Charge the handset before registering it to the telephone base.To register a handset:Place the non-registered handset in the telephone base.On the telephone base, press and hold  /FIND HANDSET for about  four seconds until the IN USE light turns on.On the handset, press # (pound key) then the handset shows Registering... Then the handset shows Registered and you hear a beep when the registration process completes. The registration process takes about 60 seconds to complete.Replace a handsetIf you want to replace a handset or reassign the designated handset number of a registered handset, you must deregister all handsets and then individually register each handset.To deregister all handsets:Press and hold  /FIND HANDSET on the telephone base for about 10 seconds until the IN USE light on the telephone base turns on and starts ashing.Press and release  /FIND HANDSET again. You must press  /FIND HANDSET while the IN USE light is still ashing. The IN USE light ashes for approximately ve seconds.All handsets show To register HS... and ...see manual alternately when the deregistration process completes. The deregistration process takes about 10 seconds to complete.TroubleshootingIf you have difculty with your telephone, please try the suggestions below. In Canada, go to www.vtechcanada.com or call 1 (800) 267-7377.I cannot add my cell phone to the telephone base.Make sure you have cellular coverage.Make sure your cell phone is compatible with your DS6511. Check the Bluetooth compatibility list at www.vtechphones.com.Make sure the Bluetooth function of your cell phone is turned on. See the user’s manual of your cell phone for more information.Remove VTech DS6511 from your cell phone’s handsfree device history list (see the user’s manual of your cell phone for more information).••1.2.••3.1.2.3.••1.2.3.1.2.3.••••
9Carefully follow the pairing instructions on page 17 and make sure that your cell phone is not connected to any other Bluetooth device.Turn off your cell phone, then turn it on again.Reset the telephone base. Unplug the unit’s electrical power. Wait for approximately  15 seconds, then plug it back in. Repeat the above suggestions.I cannot connect my cell phone with the telephone base.Make sure that the Bluetooth function of your cell phone is turned on. See the user’s manual of your cell phone for more information.Make sure that your Bluetooth cell phone is not connected to any other Bluetooth device.Turn off your cell phone, then turn it on again.Make sure that your cell phone is connected and active on the device list.For some cell phones, you must authorize VTech DS6511 device in your cell phone’s Bluetooth feature. See the user’s manual of your cell phone formore information.Manually connect your cell phone to VTech DS6511. Refer to the user’s manual of your cell phone for more information.I cannot nd VTech DS6511 on my cell phone.Make sure that the telephone base is in discoverable mode. Carefully follow the setup instructions on page 4.Make sure that you manually set your cell phone to search for devices.Remove VTech DS6511 from your cell phone’s handsfree device history list (see the user’s manual of your cell phone).Turn off your cell phone, then turn it on again.Reset the telephone base. Unplug the unit’s electrical power. Wait for approximately 15 seconds, then plug it back in. Repeat the above suggestions.I don’t know how to search for or add new devices on my cell phone.Most cell phones have the Bluetooth feature in the connection or setup menus. Please refer to the user’s manual of your cell phone.In general, press the menu key on your cell phone, then look for the Bluetooth menu in the settings or connection menu. In the Bluetooth menu, select the option to search for or add new devices.My cell phone disconnects with the telephone base.Turn off your cell phone, then turn it on again.Make sure that you are not using your cell phone when on a cell call.My cell phone is connected to the telephone base, but I cannot make a  cell call.Make sure that your cell phone is not in use when you are trying to make a cell call.For some smartphones, make sure that the cellular function is turned on.Bluetooth system busy appears on the display.Make sure that your cell phone is not in use when connected and active on the device list.Make sure that your cell phone or headset is not connected to any other Bluetooth device.DS6511 can only use one Bluetooth device at a time.The PIN on the telephone base does not work.The default PIN is 0000.If you have changed the PIN, it will appear on the handset in the pairing process.I cannot hear any audio on my telephone system when on a cell call.Reset the telephone base. Unplug the unit’s electrical power. Wait for approximately 15 seconds, then plug it back in.Turn off your cell phone, then turn it on again.I cannot download contacts from my cell phone to the DS6511.Make sure that your cell phone is paired and connected to the base.Make sure you place your cell phone next to the base while downloading.If your cell phone does not support the download, you can send the directory from your cell phone. The system can receive the directory automatically.I see duplicate entries in my downloaded directoryIf you see duplicate directory entries, you can delete them manually. Another option is to download again either your SIM card or phone memory, but not both.Some of my cell phone contacts were not imported to the DS6511.Make sure to try transferring the contacts from your SIM card to your phone memory rst, then download from your phone memory. If that doesn’t work, try transferring the contacts from your phone memory to your SIM card, then download from your SIM card. For more information on how to transfer contacts between your SIM card and your phone memory, refer to the user’s manual of your cell phone.Can the DS6511 help the poor cell phone reception in my house?If your cell phone has poor reception in your home, the DS6511 cannot improve the reception. However, if there is a location in your house with better reception, you can leave your cell phone at that location while you use DS6511 cell line. In order for this to work, the telephone base must be within 30 feet of the cell phone.The listening volume of my cell call is too loud or quiet.During a cell call, if the listening volume is to too loud or quiet, try changing the volume on your cell phone. On some cell phones, changing the volume on the cell phone effects your cell call volume on the DS6511 handset.My telephone does not work at all.Make sure the battery is installed and charged correctly. For optimum daily performance, return the handset to the telephone base or charger after use.Make sure the power adapter is securely plugged into an outlet not controlled by a wall switch.Make sure the telephone line cord is plugged rmly into the telephone base and the wall jack.Unplug the electrical power to the telephone base. Wait for approximately 15 seconds, then plug it back in. Allow up to one minute for the cordless handset and telephone base  to synchronize.•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
10Charge the battery in the handset for up to 12 hours.If the battery is completely depleted, it may take up to 30 minutes to charge the handset before LOW BATTERY appears on the screen.Remove and install the battery again. If that still does not work, it may be necessary to purchase a new battery.Disconnect the telephone base from the telephone wall jack and plug in a working telephone. If the other telephone does not work, the problem is probably in the wiring or telephone service. Contact your telephone service provider.There is no dial tone.Try all the above suggestions.Move the handset closer to the telephone base. It may be out of range.The telephone line cord may be defective. Install a new telephone line cord.Disconnect the telephone base from the telephone wall jack and connect a different telephone. If there is no dial tone on this telephone either, the problem is in your wiring or telephone service. Contact your telephone service provider.I cannot dial out.Try all the above suggestions.Make sure there is a dial tone before dialing. It is normal if the handset takes a second or two to synchronize with the telephone base before producing a dial tone. Wait an extra second before dialing.If other telephones in your home are having the same problem, the problem is in the wiring or telephone service. Contact your telephone service provider (charges may apply).Eliminate any background noise. 11There is interference during a telephone conversation.  My calls fade out when I am using the cordless handset.The handset may be out of range. The lter prevents noise and caller ID problems caused by DSL interference. Try installing your phone as far away as  possible from these types of electronic devices.If your telephone is plugged in with a modem or a surge protector, plug the telephone (or modem/surge protector) into a different location. If this doesn’t solve the problem, relocate your telephone or modem farther apart from each other, or use a different surge protector.The location of your telephone base can impact the performance of your cordless phone. For better reception, install the telephone base in a centralized location within your home or ofce, away from walls or other obstructions. In many environments, elevating the telephone base improves overall performance.Disconnect the telephone base from the telephone wall jack and plug in a corded telephone. If calls are still not clear, the problem is probably in the wiring or telephone service. Contact your telephone service provider for more information on how to access your voicemail.The answering system does not answer after correct number of rings.Make sure the answering system is on. When the answering system is on, ANS ON should show on the handset and the  /ANSWER ON/OFF light is lit on the telephone base.If toll saver is selected, the number of rings changes to two when there are new messages.If the memory is full or the answering system is off, the answering system answers after 10 rings. In some cases, the answering system is affected by the ringing system used by the telephone service provider.If you subscribe to voicemail service, change the number of rings so that your answering system answers before your voicemail answers. To get help with your voicemail settings, contact your telephone service provider.If there is a fax machine connected to the same telephone line, try disconnecting the fax machine. If that solves the problem, consult your fax machine documentation for information on compatibility with answering systems. The answering system does not record messages.Make sure the answering system is on.Make sure the memory of the answering system is not full. When the answering machine memory is full, it does not record new messages until some old messages are deleted.If you subscribe to voicemail service, change the number of ring so that your answering system answers before your voicemail answers. To determine how many rings activate your voicemail, contact your telephone service provider.If there is a fax machine connected to the same telephone line, try disconnecting the fax machine. If that solves the problem, consult your fax machine documentation for information on compatibility with answering systems.The messages on the answering system are incomplete.If a caller leaves a very long message, part of it may be lost when the answering system disconnects the call after the preset recording time.If the memory on the answering system becomes full during a message, the answering system stops recording and disconnects the call.If the caller’s voice is very soft, the answering system may stop recording and disconnect  the call.I accidentally changed the LCD language to Français/Español.Enter *3645474# to reset the LCD language to English at any part of the menu.Common cure for electronic equipment.If the telephone is not responding normally, put the cordless handset in the telephone base. If this does not x the problem, do the following (in the order listed):1. Disconnect the power to the telephone base.2. Disconnect the battery on the cordless handset.3. Wait a few minutes before connecting power to the telephone base.4. Install the battery again and place the cordless handset in the telephone base .5. Wait for the cordless handset to synchronize with the telephone base.
