SteamVR Tracking 2.0 Base Station
Safe Setup, Use, and Care
Follow these instructions for the safe setup, use, and care of the SteamVR Tracking 2.0
Base Stations (“Base Stations”) to reduce the risk of tripping, entanglement, or colliding with the Base
Stations and electrical and fire hazards. Additionally, read the user documentation provided by the
manufacturer of your Virtual Reality Kit (“VR Kit”) for full system instructions and safety information.
Base Station Components
Each Base Station box includes the following items:
Base Station(s)
Mounting kits
Power cord
Regional electric plug adaptors
Power supplies
Setting up the Base Stations
1. Plan a safe play area. Follow the guidance provided by the manufacturer of your VR Kit. In general,
when creating a safe play area:
Choose a play space that gives you enough room that your outstretched arms, including
controllers, will not touch walls or objects around you, including anything above you such as
ceiling, fans, or lights.
Be sure there is nothing dangerous around the play space. For example, do not set up your play
area near windows, balconies, stairs or other places you could fall.
Clear the floor of things that could make you trip or slip.
Clear the area of things you could collide with.
Take precautions to keep pets and children from entering the play area.
2. Select locations for your Base Stations.
The included Base Station mounting kit may be used for placement on a wall or ceiling, or the
Stations may be placed on a stable bookshelf, light stand, cargo pole, or tripod. The Base
Stations should be securely attached.
Locate Base Stations outside of the play area, far enough that a player will not strike them. The
Base Stations are precision electronic devices and drops, bumps or other contact may negatively
affect performance.
Space Base Stations appropriately. Set up your Base Stations near electrical outlets and at
opposite corners of your space, diagonally and above head height, ideally more than 2 meters
(6.5 feet) high. For proper tracking, make sure the two Base Stations are not more than 5 meters
(16 feet) apart. Avoid areas with bright light, which might degrade the performance of the Base
Stations.
3. Mount the Base Stations according to the mounting kit instructions.
4. Use only the Base Station power supply accompanying your VR Kit. The power supply has a unique
adapter designed to fit in the Base Station. Other power supplies that are not designed to work with
the Base Station may pose an electrical or fire hazard.
5. Safely route electrical cords, so they are clear of the play area or any area that may lead to tripping
or entanglement with the cords.
6. Follow instructions provided by the manufacturer of your VR kit to complete setup.
Use and care
1. Base Station care and cleaning. Keep the Base Stations dry and away from liquids. Exposing the
Base Station power supplies to liquid could create a shock hazard. If you need to clean the Base
Stations, unplug, then use a lightly moistened cloth. Do not use cleaning chemicals; these may
damage the Base Stations.
2. Humidity. If you operate the Base Stations in an area with high humidity, moisture may collect in
the Base Stations causing them to operate incorrectly. If that occurs, stop using the Base Stations
until the moisture evaporates.
3. Do not attempt to open or service the Base Stations. Contact the manufacturer of your VR Kit if
there is a problem.
4. Radio Frequency and potential medical device interference.
Each Base Station contains radio-emitting technology that may interfere with the normal
operation of nearby electronic devices. It uses a 2.4GHz BLUETOOTH® -band radio with GFSK
modulation and custom low-latency protocol. While it has been tested for non-interference with
common devices, do not operate around critical electronic equipment (e.g. in hospitals).
Consult your doctor prior to using the Base Stations if you have implanted electronic devices
(e.g. pacemaker) to confirm that these devices will not be impacted. Do not use the Base
Stations if your medical device will be affected by the emitted radio waves.
