Longer cord sets or extension cords are available and may be used if care isexercised. If an extension cord is used, the marked electrical rating of the cord should be at least as great as theelectrical rating of the oven. The extension cord must be a grounding-type 3-wire cord. The longer cord should be arranged so it doesnot drape over the table top or counter where children can pull on it or trip over it.INSTALLATIONCooking appliances installed under the oven may, under some heavy usage conditions, causetemperatures high enough to overheat someinternal parts of the microwave oven.To prevent overheating from taking place, theexhaust fan is designed to automatically turn on ifexcessive temperatures occur. Should thishappen, the fan cannot be manually turned off, butit will automatically turn off when the internal partshave cooled. The fan may stay on up toapproximately 30 minutes after the range andmicrowave oven controls have been turned off.AUTOMATIC FAN PROTECTION FEATUREWhen use 3-pronged plug When use grounding adaptor, makesure the receptacle box is fullygrounded.3-prong ReceptacleReceptacleBox cover3-prong plugReceptacle Box CoverReceptacle GroundingLeadGroundingAdaptor

Ovenproof dinner ware is usually safe touse in the microwave.Do not heat or cook in glass jars or bottles.Do not use dishes with silver, gold, platinum or other metal trim. Arcing may occur and /or the dish maybreak.Do not use delicate or stemmed glassware. Although the glass may be transparent to microwave energy, heat from the food may cause the glassware to crack.TO STOP THE OVEN WHILE THE OVEN IS OPERATION1. Lock on the label to verify that particular cups, glasses, platesare indeed suitable, especially paper goods. If you are not sure, try thisutensil test to check.• Put the empty utensil in the microwave oven.• Put one cup of water in a glass measure next to the empty utensil.• Heat on HI for 1 minute.• After 1 minute the water should be warm but the utensil should not.If the utensil is warm, it is not suitable for microwave cooking.
20PlasticsPlastic dishes, cups, mugs and bowls may be used in the oven for short periods of time. None of theseshould be used in the oven for prolonged periods because distortion and melting may occur.Check manufacturer's recommendations concerning microwave safety.Plastic wrap can be used to cover dishes in most recipes if the dish is deep enough to avoid plastic wraptouching the food. Always vent the wrap by folding back one corner to allow excess steam to escape.Plastic cooking bags should be slit before cooking so excess steam can escape.Do not use wire twist ties to close the bag. Wire twist ties can cause arcing which can damage the oven.PaperPaper cups, wax paper, napkins, paper towels, and plates may be used for short cooking. Prolonged timein the oven can cause paper to burn. Do not use recycled paper products, such as brown paper bags. They contain impurities which may cause arcing and damage the oven.Metal Metal utensils should not be used in the oven. Metal reflects microwave energy so foods will not cook sofoods will not cook evenly.Metal can cause arcing and damage the oven.
21COOKING GUIDEVegetables are favorite foods when cooked in themicrowave. Because they cook for a shorter time andrequire less water than conventional cooking, vegetablescooked by microwave energy retain more vitamins thanwhen cooked by other methods. To cook better in the microwave, vegetables should becut into evenly sized pieces. Baked potatoes, squash, orvegetables with skins can be pierced with a fork andarranged in a circle for the best cooking results. Unevenvegetables such as asparagus or broccoli, can bearranged in the dish alternating thick and thin ends.Stirring, rearranging, turning over and rotating areeffective techniques to maximize the way microwaveenergy cooks vegetables.Use care in removing lid to prevent steam burn.Standing time is an important element in successfulcooking because additional cooking will take place then.Make a decision about desired doneness after thestanding time then add more time, if needed.LIGHT BAKED POTATOES4 baking potatoes, about 8 oz. each salt and pepper2 cups low fat cottage cheese1/2 cup sliced green onions2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley Paprika1. 22Eggs and cheese are delicate foods requiring care inmicrowave cooking. Piercing the yolks of eggs helps torelease steam during cooking. Stirring egg mixturesfrequently helps distribute the heat evenly. Because themicrowave energy cooks so quickly, always check tosee if the eggs are done to your satisfaction after thestanding time. At this time, stir, rearrange or turn over. Ifneeded, add additional time gradually. To cook only oneegg, try a lower Power setting until you get satisfactoryresults.Shredded soft cheeses and grated hard cheeses meltwell if stirred into a hot mixture. Cheese may not lookmelted so always stir before determining if cheese ismelted enough. Sprinkle cheese over a hot casserole ina thicker layer at the edges. Microwave energy cooksfrom the outside in, so the outer edges will melt fasterthan the center. For cheese melt sandwiches, heat filling where possiblebefore adding it to the bread. Top each sandwich with aslice of cheese and cook on P-HI for about 15 to 20seconds for one sandwich, about 30 seconds for twosandwiches and about 1 minute for four sandwiches oruntil cheese is melted.HARD-COOKED EGGS4 eggs1. 25Delicate, tender fish is the result when cooked in themicrowave. Because it is moist cooking, the finishedfish and seafood, if cooked for the appropriate time, willbe opaque and flake with a fork with no signs ofdryness.Because fish is unevenly shaped, the arrangement iscritical to success. To arrange several fillets in a deepglass pie plate, put thicker edges to the outside andthinner edges to the inside. Try to create a circle forbest results, even overlap thin ends where necessaryto achieve overall even thickness.Single items may do better if the thin ends are shieldedwith a foil. Some rules apply to the use of foil-Nevercover more than one-third of any item; do not let the foilpieces touch each other or the sides of the microwaveoven, and be sure that all ends are tucked under andlie flat to the food. Cover with wax paper to preventspattering.Seafood cooks very quickly in the microwave-about 3to 4 minutes per pound. SeePoached Chicken recipe.Arrangement is very important with poultry and its unevenshapes. Try to arrange pieces in a circular pattern whereverpossible for the most even defrosting or cooking. Therounded part of the drumstick should go at the outer edge, for example, while the thinner end goes to the middle of thedish. Continue with other pieces until the overall layer isfairly even. Cover with wax paper to prevent spattering.Poultry defrosts well with our AUTO DEFROST feature. Besure that all poultry is completely defrosted before cooking.Check for doneness after stand time is over.Remember that more cooking will take place duringstanding time. Poultry must be cooked to an internaltemperature of 160°F for boneless pieces, to 170°F forbone-in pieces and to 185°F for whole birds.Poultry is done when the meat is no longer pink and thejuices are the colour of chicken broth with no traces of pink.Be sure to check for these signs by cutting into the innerthigh. You may also check for the internal temperature withan instant-read thermometer. Occasionally the bones willshow red spots, but this does not affect the doneness.MEXICAN CHICKEN RICE CASSEROLE
28Tender cuts of meat do well in the microwave, especially when cooked at lower power levels. Be suremeat is fully defrosted before cooking. Consult themeat cooking charts for details. The exact time to cook each piece of meat will dependon the shape of the meat, the weight, the startingtemperature of the meat and the desired doneness. Our timings assume the meat is taken from the properstorage (refrigerated). The lower number in the timerange reflects time suggested for medium meat; thehigher number for well done. It is always possible toadd time if needed, so it is best to start with the lowernumber for calculating the time.Stand time after cooking is an important aspect ofmicrowave cooking since more cooking will take placethen. The residual heat in the food will equalize andfinish the cooking process.
