VX-900 OPERATING MANUAL4BEFORE YOU BEGINBattery Pack Installation and RemovalrTo install the battery, hold the transceiver withyour left hand, so your palm is over the speakerand your thumb is on the top of the belt clip. Care-fully mate the battery’s four insertion slots withtheir corresponding alignment tabs on the trans-ceiver case, while tilting the Belt Clip outward.Proper alignment occurs with the battery packoffset about 1/2 inch from the top edge of thebattery compartment.rGuide the pack on to the tabs with a slight inwardpressure, then slide the battery pack upward, un-til it locks in place with a “Click.”rTo remove the battery, turn the radio off and re-move any protective cases. Slide the BatteryPack Latch on the bottom of the radio towardthe front panel while sliding the battery downabout 1/2 inch. Then lift the battery out from theradio while unfolding the Belt Clip.Do not attempt to open any of the recharge-able Lithium-Ion packs, as they could ex-plode if accidentally short-circuited.Low Battery IndicationAs the battery discharges during use, the voltagegradually becomes lower. When the battery voltagereaches 6.0 volts, it is time to substitute a freshlycharged battery and recharge the depleted pack. TheLED indicator on the top of the radio will blink redwhen the battery voltage is low (6 Volts or lower).Tilt the Belt ClipInsert the Battery Pack Caution Danger of explosion if battery is replaced withan incorrect battery. Replace only with the sameor equivalent type.

Never attempt to op-erate this transceiverwithout an antenna con-nected.rIf you have a Speaker/Mi-crophone, we recommend that it not be connecteduntil you are familiar with the basic operation ofthe VX-900.Quick StartrTurn the top panel’sVOL/PWR knobclockwise to turn onthe radio on.rTurn the top panel’s CHselector knob to choosethe desired operatingchannel. A channelname will appear on theLCD. If you want to se-lect the operating chan-nel from a different Memory Channel Group, pressthe Soft key (assigned to the Memory Group Up orDown function) to select the Memory ChannelGroup you want before selecting the operating chan-nel. A Group name will appear on the LCD when-ever the Soft key is pressed.Note: Some models are programmed so that theoperating channels are selected by the Soft keyand the memory channel group is selected by theCH selector knob. For further details, contact yourVERTEX STANDARD dealer.

If no signal ispresent, press and holdin the MONITOR but-ton (under the PTTswitch) more than 2seconds; backgroundnoise will now beheard, and you mayuse this to set theVOL/PWR knob forthe desired audio level.Press and hold theMONITOR button more than 2 seconds (or pressthe MONITOR button twice) to quiet the noiseand resume normal (quiet) monitoring.rTo transmit, press andhold the PTT switch.Speak into the micro-phone area of the frontpanel grille (above the[D] key) in a normalvoice level. To returnto the Receive mode, release the PTT switch.OPERATIONrPress the Soft key (if assigned to the Scan func-tion) or switch the TOGGLE Switch to the as-signed “Scan” position (when so programmed byyour dealer) to start the scanner. The scanner rap-idly steps through each of the dealer-programmedchannels, looking for incoming calls.rPress the TOP SELkey (on the top panel)or SIDE SEL key (thetop button on the leftside) to activate one ofthe preprogrammedfunctions which mayhave been enabled atthe time of program-ming by the dealer.Similarly, when usingthe 16-key version, the[A], [B], [C], and [D]function keys may ac-tivate one of these features, if programmed bythe dealer. See the next section for details regard-ing the available features.
VX-900 OPERATING MANUAL 7OPERATIONrSwitch the top panel’sTOGGLE switch tothe [A], [B], or [Cen-ter] position to activateone of the pre-pro-grammed functionswhich may have beenenabled at the time of programming by the dealer.When this switch is in the [A (left)], [B (right)],or [Center] position, the feature programmed (byyour dealer) to that switch position will be acti-vated. See the next section for details regardingthe available features.rPress the DTMF keys on the telephone keypadwhile pressing the PTT switch to send DTMFtones (16-key version only).rIf a Speaker/Microphone is available, remove theplastic cap and its two mounting screws from theright side of the transceiver, then align the con-nector of the Speaker/Microphone on the trans-ceiver body; secure the connector pin using thescrews supplied with the Speaker/Microphone.Hold the speaker grille up next to your ear whilereceiving. To transmit, press the PTT switch onthe Speaker/Microphone, just as you would onthe main transceiver’s body, and speak into themicrophone on a normal voice level.Note: Save the original plastic cap and itsmounting screws. They should be reinstalledwhen not using the Speaker/Microphone.
VX-900 OPERATING MANUAL8ADVANCED OPERATIONSoft key and TOGGLE switch FunctionsThe VX-900 includes the [TOP SEL], [SIDE SEL],[MONITOR], and [LAMP] keys, and the TOGGLEswitch, while the 16-key version additionally pro-vides [A], [B], [C], [D] function keys. The Soft keyand TOGGLE switch functions can be customized,via programming by your VERTEX STANDARDdealer, to meet your communications/network re-quirements. Some features may require the purchaseand installation of optional internal accessories. Thepossible Soft key and TOGGLE switch program-ming features are illustrated at the right, and theirfunctions are explained on page 10. VX-900 OPERATING MANUAL10ADVANCED OPERATIONDescription of Operating FunctionsChannel ScanThe Scanning feature is used to monitor multiplechannels programmed into the transceiver. Whilescanning, the transceiver will check each chan-nel for the presence of a signal, and will stop on achannel if a signal is present.One key or switch may be assigned to the Scanfunction, as follows:rOne of the Soft keys may be assigned forScan operation; orrThe TOGGLE switch may have one positionassigned to the Scan function.To activate scanning:¦Press the assigned Soft key, or set theTOGGLE switch to the assigned position.¦The scanner will search the channels, lookingfor active ones; it will pause each time it findsa channel on which someone is speaking.To stop scanning:¦Press the assigned Soft key, or set theTOGGLE switch to a different position.¦Operation will revert to the channel to whichthe CH knob is set.Note: Your dealer may have programmed yourradio to stay on one of the following channels ifyou press the PTT switch during scanning pause:£Current channel (“Talk Back”)£“Last Busy” channel£“Priority” channel£“Home” channel£“Scan Start” channelDual WatchThe Dual Watch feature is similar to the Scan fea-ture, except that only two channels are monitored:rThe current operating channel; andrThe “Priority” channel.To activate Dual Watch:¦Press the assigned Soft key, or set theTOGGLE switch to the assigned position.¦The scanner will search the two channels; itwill pause each time it finds a channel onwhich someone is speaking.To stop Dual Watch:¦Press the assigned Soft key, or set theTOGGLE switch to a different position.¦Operation will revert to the channel to whichthe CH knob is set.
VX-900 OPERATING MANUAL 11TX Save DisablePress the assigned Soft key or switch theTOGGLE switch to the assigned position to dis-able the Transmit Battery Saver, if you are operat-ing in a location where high power is almost al-ways needed.The Transmit Battery Saver helps extend batterylife by reducing transmit power when a verystrong signal from an apparently nearby stationis being received. Under some circumstances,though, your hand-held radio may not be heardwell at the other end of the communication path,and high power may be necessary at all times.LCD InvertPress the assigned Soft key or switch theTOGGLE switch to the assigned position to in-vert the LCD display to backward-facing readout(the backward display is convenient for viewingwhen wearing the transceiver on your belt). Pressthe assigned Soft key again or switch theTOGGLE switch to the other position to returnthe LCD display to frontward-facing readout.ADVANCED OPERATIONLow PowerPress the assigned Soft key or switch theTOGGLE switch to the assigned position to setthe radio’s transmitter to the “Low Power” mode,thus extending battery life. Press the assignedSoft key again or switch the TOGGLE switchto the other Position to return to “High Power”operation when in difficult terrain.Talk AroundPress the assigned Soft key or switch theTOGGLE switch to the assigned position to ac-tivate the Talk Around feature when you are op-erating on duplex channel systems (separate re-ceive and transmit frequencies, utilizing a “re-peater” station). The Talk Around feature allowsyou to bypass the repeater station and talk directlyto a station that is nearby. This feature has no ef-fect when you are operating on “simplex” chan-nels, where the receive and transmit frequenciesare already the same.Note that your dealer may have made provisionfor “Talk Around” channels by programming “re-peater” and “Talk Around” frequencies on twoadjacent channels. If so, the key may be used forone of the other Pre-Programmed Functions.
VX-900 OPERATING MANUAL12ADVANCED OPERATIONEncryption DisablePress the assigned Soft key or switch theTOGGLE switch to the assigned position to turnoff the optional voice encryption unit temporarily,for use when an incorrect setting of (or failure in)the encryption system at one end of the commu-nication path has made it impossible to talk to theother station.Remember that disabling the encryption will meanthat your transmissions are no longer secure. Re-turn to the encrypted mode as soon as possible, anddo not discuss any critical or confidential informa-tion while in the non-encrypted mode of operation.LockSwitch the TOGGLE switch to lock the top-panelkeys; this can be enabled to prevent radio settingsfrom being disturbed.Follow-Me Scan“Follow-Me” Scan feature checks a User-assignedPriority Channel regularly as you scan the otherchannels. Thus, if only Channels 1, 3, and 5 (ofthe 8 available channels) are designated for “Scan-ning,” the user may nonetheless assign Channel2 as the “User-assigned” Priority Channel via the“Follow-Me” feature.To activate “Follow-Me” scanning, first select thechannel you want to designate as the “User-As-signed Priority Channel” and switch theTOGGLE switch to the assigned position. Thenturn the CH selector knob to the “Scanning Start”channel which has been programmed by yourdealer to activate the scanner. When the scannerstops on an “Active” channel, the User-assignedPriority Channel will automatically be checkedevery few seconds; if activity is found on the User-assigned Priority Channel, the radio will switchbetween it and the Dealer-Assigned PriorityChannel, if any.Follow-Me DWTo set up a “Dual Watch” frequency pair using the“Follow-Me” feature, select a channel using the CHselector knob. Now press the assigned Soft key;pressing the assigned Soft key locks the currentchannel as the User-assigned Priority Channel. Nowrotate the CH selector knob to another channel (notthe “Scanning Start” channel). Your radio will nowswitch back-and-forth between the currently-se-lected channel (shown on the CH selector knob)and the User-assigned Priority Channel.During “Follow-Me” scanning (after you have

Toinclude the current Group in the scanning loop,press and hold in the assigned Soft key for onesecond.To remove a Group from Group Scan, pressand hold in the assigned Soft key again for onesecond.Multi-Group Scanning is only possible if you areusing the “User Scan” list.The VX-900 has two scanning “lists:” the “DealerScan” list and the “User Scan” list. The “DealerScan” list is a fixed group of stations which willbe included when scanning is activated. The “UserScan” list is a different list, initially arranged bythe Dealer, which may be modified by the User(if, for example, you want to delete one or moreof these channels from the scanning list).To edit the User Scan list, press and hold thesoft key (assigned to the Group Up/Down func-tion) to delete the current Memory Group fromthe Scanning. Alternatively, press and hold the“Scan” Soft key for one second to delete theCurrent Memory channel from the Scanning.When you delete a Group or channel, “-SKIP-”will appear on the LCD for one second after press-ADVANCED OPERATIONpressed the key), you can set up the “Dual Watch”feature by rotating the CH selector knob to an-other channel. The radio will then scan back andforth between the original User-assigned PriorityChannel and the newly-selected channel.The Priority Channel you have assigned (beforepressing the key) will be retained in memory un-til you change it.Channel Group SelectionThe VX-900 is capable of separating its 512memory channels into any of 20 Groups. Thereis no limit as to the number of channels whichmay be assigned to each Group. The Dealer willhave made the Group assignment at the time ofchannel programming. At the same time, one ofthe Soft keys will be assigned as the ChannelGroup Selection key.To change Channel Groups, press the as-signed Soft key to step through the availableGroups. Once the desired Group is reached, ro-tate the CH selector knob to select the desiredchannel within the selected Group.You may wish to have the Scanner (describedpreviously) pass through more than one Groupduring the scanning process (normally, scanning

To restore a particular channelto your scanning list, press and hold in the Softkey again for one second; “-STOP-” will appearon the LCD for one second after pressing the Softkey.Call/ResetThis feature, if enabled, allows the user to changethe 3-digit Page Call code, used to call other simi-larly-equipped stations. Press the Dealer-assignedSoft key, followed by the three digits represent-ing the Page Call code of the station you wish tocall. Three tones will be heard after the last keyis pressed (the new code will now be transmit-ted).The receiver squelch of the other station will beopened, and you can begin communication.Speed DialYour Dealer may have pre-programmed Auto-Dialtelephone number memories into your radio.To dial a number, press the Dealer-assigned Softkey for Speed Dialing, then press the numberedkey corresponding to the Auto-Dial memory num-ber list provided by your Dealer. The DTMF tonessent during the dialing sequence will be heard inthe speaker.EmergencyThe VX-900 includes an “Emergency” featurewhich may be useful if you have someone moni-toring on the same frequency as your transceiver’schannel. For further details contact your VER-TEX STANDARD dealer.ADVANCED OPERATION
VX-900 OPERATING MANUAL 15ADVANCED OPERATIONARTS (Auto Range Transpond System)This system is designed to inform you when you andanother ARTS-equipped station are within commu-nication range.During ARTS operation, your radio automaticallytransmits for about 1 second every 25 seconds (theinterval is programmed by the Dealer) in an attemptto shake hands with the other station.If you move out of range for more than two minutes,your radio senses that no signal has been received, aringing beeper will sound, and “OUT OF SERVICE”will scroll on the LCD. If you subsequently moveback into range, as soon as the other station trans-mits, your beeper will sound, and “IN SERVICE” willscroll on the LCD.DTMF Paging SystemThis system allows paging and selective calling, us-ing DTMF tone sequences.When your radio is paged by a station bearing a tonesequence which matches yours, your radio’s squelchwill open and the alert ringer will sound.The three-digit code of the station which paged youwill be displayed on your radio’s LCD.
VX-900 OPERATING MANUAL16UNDERSTANDING RADIO WAVESRadio waves travel from one point to another by sev-eral different means. The general term for these meth-ods of wave travel is “propagation.” You may knowthat “shortwave” signals can be propagated over dis-tances of several thousand miles by reflection off ofthe upper regions of the atmosphere.Your hand-held transceiver, on the other hand, oper-ates on the so-called VHF (Very-High Frequency) orUHF (Ultra-High Frequency) bands. On these bands,radio waves usually do not reflect off of the atmosphere.Instead, the radio waves behave almost as light: theytravel in a straight line, and when they meet a buildingor obstruction, they go no further in that direction.Therefore, it is important that you be as high and freefrom obstructions as possible to cover the greatest dis-tance when using your radio. If you operate from in-side a car or building, any metal around you can absorbmuch of the signal, both transmitted and received. Cov-erage may therefore be very poor under those condi-tions. However, if you must operate from indoors, mov-ing next to a window will improve communications.In view of the factors just discussed, you can easilysee the potential benefit of holding the radio up highnear your mouth while transmitting. In this way theantenna is high and clear, and coverage is best.On final note regarding propagation is useful in im-proving coverage. Because radio waves at VHF/UHFare similar to light waves, they do reflect, to varyingdegrees, off of hills, buildings, and the like. In acrowded urban area, with many close buildings closetogether, many reflections may occur, and interferewith one another, causing variations in signal strengthat different locations.Therefore, if a signal is weak and you walk a fewfeet in any direction, reception may suddenly becomeclear, because a particular reflection path may be-come dominant. Reflections are frequently useful,as they can allow for communications between twostations over a highly obstructed path.
