m Determining What Serials Pom Are installed in Your Computer
Whether you are installing an tnternat or tin Ettental rnodem in your system, it is a good idea
to determine whnl serial ports are installed in youreornputer, slany. You may assume that you
only have com on your campulcr. when you ulually hove bum cth and com. You also
mlghl have many other eornbinstions of com ports.
Most eornputers hnve a Serial l/o card installed with COM ports I and 2 enabled. A Serial l/o
rent is returned wh=n using an External modem. these eards allow you to connect exlcmnl modems
and a moute...yust to name a couple. Even it you dnn'l have anything connected to the Rszn jack
on the my card. it is still uslng a COM port. Every intemat modem has n com pon hunt inside or
it. The COM port and IRQ selection is mode yin dip styitrhes or jumpers (Refer to the Quick
lnstallstion Reltrencc Card for settings.) A COM pun may only be used hy one ttevteel
Many problems you may experience installing on lnterrtul modem are caused by configuring
the modem‘s COM port to a pen already used by the lie card installed in your computer system. A
symptom of this south: is the modem inability to dtal. When using an External modem the
difficulty lies in determining what COM port is asslgncd (c the physical R52. Jud; on the back or
your computer. You may think the 115232 juclt ts COM port 2. when in fnct the second pen on the ll
0 card has been set to COM porl 4. There tire many different pussible whys that your system may be
configured.
in the case or an internal modern installation you must first determine which cDM ports are
already being used by devices in the system. Remember. you cunhot set the internal modem to a
COM port address used by another device in the system,
In this cast of an Exlernal modem insmllatinn you mnsl determine if: COM pan is enabled on _
your 110 can! um you may plug your nmdem into. And if so wlml is the correct address for the
com pon. Anniher impomnl feet that you should know abnul your com pon is the type nfUART
