CERTIFICATION DESIGNATIONS

You can trust a professional remodeling contractor with NARI certification to have access to the latest industry information via conventions, educational programs, meetings, trade publications and expos that feature up-to-the-minute products, materials and techniques. Only serious professionals with a real desire to excel in the industry are eligible to participate in NARI's rigorous certification program, which teaches and tests skill sets, safety issues, and ethical business practices.
ARC (Accredited Remodeling Company) Companies with the Accredited Remodeling Company designation have demonstrated that they meet and exceed a higher set of industry standards as determined by a third party, the NARI Accreditation Board.
CR (Certified Remodeler) Individuals with the CR designation are recognized as experienced remodelers with skills and knowledge in all aspects of the remodeling industry. They must have at least five years remodeling experience, participate in 16 hours of continuing education and be associated with a business in compliance with the NARI Code of Ethics.
CRS (Certified Remodeler Specialist) This designation includes those remodelers who specialize in six specialty areas of the industry: concrete and masonry, electrical systems, insulation, mechanical systems, plumbing, and roofing and siding. They must have been in the remodeling business for at least five years and associated with a business in compliance with the NARI Code of Ethics.

CRA (Certified Remodeler Associate) CRA designation will be available to and used by individuals associated with the remodeling industry, but not directly involved in any form of hands-on remodeling. This includes individuals employed as consultants, educators, manufacturers, publishers, suppliers, and writers for the remodeling industry.
CKBR (Certified Kitchen and Bath Remodeler also includes ACSD and PKBP) Individuals with the CKBR designation are recognized as experienced remodelers with skills and knowledge in all aspects of kitchen and bathroom remodeling, have at least five years experience and are associated with a business in compliance with the NARI Code of Ethics.
CLC (Certified Lead Carpenter) CLC designation is exclusively for lead carpenters who are skilled and knowledgeable in the technical, hands-on aspects of their work, and who have demonstrated skill and knowledge in project management, supervision, and customer service. Candidates must have worked in the remodeling industry full-time and continuously for at least five years, must comply with the NARI Code of Ethics and must have at least two years experience as a full time lead carpenter.
CRPM (Certified Remodeling Project Manager) Certified Remodeling Project Managers (CRPMs) are the field personnel who oversee every aspect of the project: customer satisfaction, personnel management, project schedule, administration, etc., while working on

the project or projects. Candidates must have two (2) years continuous experience in the remodeling industry, AND one (1) year as a remodeling project manager.
GCP (Green Certified Professional) Individuals with the GCP designation are recognized as experienced remodelers with skills and knowledge in all aspects of green remodeling, have been in the remodeling business for at least two years and be associated with a business in compliance with the NARI Code of Ethics.
MCR (Master Certified Remodeler) This designation recognizes Certified Remodelers that have demonstrated commitment to the remodeling industry through support and involvement in their local chapter, NARI National, and/or their local community. Candidates must be a Certified Remodeler for a minimum of ten consecutive years, hold another NARI certification (CKBR, GCP, CLC, and UDCP) and must submit a letter of recommendation from their chapter executive or chapter president or three letters of recommendation from recent clients.
UDCP (Universal Design Certified Professional) Individuals with the UDCP designation are recognized as experienced professionals with skills and knowledge in all aspects of universal design and remodeling. UDCP's must have been working in the remodeling industry full-time and continuously for at least two years, must comply to the NARI Code of Ethics and must complete a minimum of eight hours of universal design remodeling/building related education.

Energy use, which continues for the life of the house, contributes to air pollution, mercury poisoning of water and land if your energy comes from coal fired power plants. With an abundance of stained cabinetry, Kelly brought in oak open shelves to keep the room from feeling too heavy. She expertly placed them to the left of the windows, which allows more natural light to pour into the kitchen at all angles. With the island being the kitchen's center, she gave it a lighter finish to provide contrast and open up the room. To emphasize the rustic feel of the house, she placed open shelves here as well which also provides the added convenience of being able to grab cooking essentials quickly rather than having to fish through cabinets.

For more than 30 years, Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk has built homes and transformed lives and communities. This past September, leaders from various industries came together to raise the walls on a home in Wyandanch, NY.

WHEN DO I NEED A PERMIT?

T he National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) is reminding homeowners to understand rules regarding building permits before embarking on common remodeling projects.

Although building codes vary from state to state, a permit is generally required for remodeling projects that involve changes to the building's existing footprint, electrical system or plumbing. Adding new windows to existing walls usually requires a permit. You are likely to need a permit for any project that goes beyond a simple repair or aesthetic upgrade such as:
· adding supporting walls or taking down load-bearing walls,
· an in-ground concrete pool or a porch/deck,
· replacing the roof, · backyard shed or · concrete sidwalks, driveways
and slabs
"There are two major reasons why a homeowner needs a permit on projects," says Michael Harris, president of BRY-JO Roofing & Remodeling, in Richardson, Texas, whose company won a National CotY 2014 Award in the Residential Addition Under $100,000 category. "The first is because when a permit is filed, city officials will inspect the work completed at different stages to ensure the work complies with current safety and health building codes. The second, and most

significant reason, is it protects the homeowner's investment they are making to improve the property.
For instance, during a master bathroom addition completed by

prior owners 10 years before-- without proper permits-- BRY-JO discovered plumbing, electrical and framing that was non-compliant and even dangerous, including the removal of two load-bearing beams, which was causing the second-floor room above the bathroom to start pulling away from the home.

To support the second story, engineered beams were installed in the bathroom and on the exterior wall. The city required two concrete piers below the slab foundation to support the slab. All the electrical and plumbing had to be pulled out and rerun.

"Uncovering this information early on, we were able to incorporate as much detail as possible in our estimate and advise the homeowners we would likely uncover some additional surprises, which added more than $8,000 to the bathroom renovation," Harris says. "They were happy with the final results and relieved that their home was not only beautiful, but safe to live in."

Permits need to be obtained before the project gets under way. If city officials spot a project without proper permits, work could be stopped until they are obtained, leaving you without a functioning kitchen or bathroom for weeks and a hefty fine.

When work is done to refresh an existing structure, however, a permit is usually not necessary. For example, updating the appearance of the existing kitchen cabinet doors with laminate layering does not require a permit. Other remodeling updates such as flooring/ceiling coverings, painting/papering, tiling or carpeting and interior wall decorations can usually be done without a building permit. However, even if a permit isn't required, certain projects may require licensed professionals for structural, electrical and plumbing

If you are using a professional contractor, it's recommended to have them pull the necessary permits. City officials are likely to have a long list of questions that contractors are best qualified to answer.

"While it may be tempting to forego the permit, a remodel or addition done without one can be a problem if the homeowner decides to sell or refinance," says attorney Patrick Noaker, from Noaker Law firm, a member in the NARI Minnesota chapter.
If the appraiser's total of the square footage of the home differs from county records, it triggers a search for a permit. If not found, the bank may decline to issue a loan on the home. In today's housing market, illegal construction is a risk for the lender. A fire insurance carrier, for example, may refuse to honor a claim.
"If there is a wiring problem that causes the home to burn to the ground, the homeowner's insurance company could refuse to cover the loss," Noaker says.

Bathroom Best Practices Adjusting counter and toilet heights are two ways to make bathrooms more accessible. Wall-hung toilets should be approximately two inches higher. A first floor or main floor bathroom should incorporate:
· Structural bracing around the tub, shower and toilet for grab bars
· Walk-in tub or curbless stand-up shower with no threshold
· Levered handles for faucets · Adjustable showerhead

A decade ago on April 22, 2010, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) enacted (LRRP), which requires remodelers working in homes built before 1978 to follow work practices designed to minimize the exposure of residents to lead hazards. The LRRP rule is designed to protect pregnant women and children under 6 from toxic lead exposure by requiring contractors to complete an eight-hour training course outlining lead-safe work practices that contain and minimize lead dust. Those who complete the course must supervise the renovation of pre-1978 homes, and the contracting firm must be a certified firm with the EPA.

If your home was built before 1978, there are steps you can take to protect your family from the dangers of lead poisoning.
The following is a checklist for homeowners living in pre-1978 homes:
Verify that your contractor's firm is registered with the EPA unless your state has taken over with its own lead safety program, in which case the certification process may be slightly different. Verify at least one person is a Certified Renovator and has documented the training of the work crew and is supervising the work being completed in the home. Know that these certifications must be accessible at the work site at all times. Firms must post signs before renovation begins, clearly defining the work area and warning occupants and other persons not involved in renovation activities to remain outside of the work area. Make sure you understand and sign the EPA's "Renovate Right" brochure. Remove all belongings from the immediate area of the renovation. Notice if your contractor is using plastic sheeting that is taped 6 feet beyond the perimeter of surfaces undergoing renovation; reusable cloth coverings are not acceptable. Renovators should be cleaning up and mopping daily to minimize dust contamination. Contractors must use HEPA vacuums and/or wet mopping to remove lead particles. All contaminated materials should be placed in heavy duty plastic bags before your contractor disposes of them.
