H.O.G.® TOURING RALLIES

THE GOLDEN TICKET

Two exciting new H.O.G.® Touring Rallies have been announced for this year.
The first is the exciting three-part `Wrecking Crew' Tour, with the first part kicking off at the end of May in Milwaukee. This will feature the XR1200® race series.
Later tours will involve Harley-Davidson drag racing and Harley-Davidson flat-track racing. If you are interested in the world of motorcycle racing, this is a unique opportunity to go behind the scenes!
Also, the `New England Trail Blazer' rally will take place from September 7-12 in the north-east of the USA and will cover more than 1,400 miles of riding. More details will be available soon in the `Events' section of www.hogeuropegallery.com.

One lucky motorcyclist will win the opportunity to ride a 1936 Harley-Davidson® EL in the 2014 Motorcycle Cannonball Endurance Run. The run is a 16-day, 4,150mile coast-to-coast ride only for motorcycles made before 1937. It takes place between September 5-21 and will take in Daytona Beach, Florida, Tacoma and Washington.

There is also a second prize of an allexpenses-paid trip from anywhere in the world to the Harley-Davidson® factory in Milwaukee.
The draw will take place on June 29. For further information, go to www.cannonballgoldenticket.com

UPDATE

NEW DEALERSHIP IN SOUTH AFRICA

The Bloemfontein Harley-Davidson® dealership in South Africa opened its doors on November 16, 2013. The new dealership, the 12th in sub-Saharan Africa, is located at the centre of a popular riding route between Cape Town and Johannesburg, making it the ideal place to stop off to refuel.
With around 400 H-D® bikers in Bloemfontein and the surrounding area, there has been increasing demand for a service and shop space. The new dealership will use imported technical
6 HOG®

and workshop equipment, as well as stocking the latest Harley® MotorClothes and Parts & Accessories.
The dealership hopes to give back to the broader Free State community. The opening of the store has created 11 jobs, and hopes to continue to create more local job opportunities as it grows.

CHAPTER CATCH-UP
Plymouth Chapter, UK
"The story behind this photo begins back in February 2009, when I took Lisa, now my wife, out on my 2004 XL883C for the first time. She loved it from the moment we set off and couldn't wait to get out on it again. In fact, she loved it so much that when I told her I had got us both tickets for the Cider Rally, she nearly bit my arm off. It was clear that we both shared a passion. I knew that Lisa was the one for me, so on a riding holiday to Spain with the newly formed Plymouth Chapter, I proposed and she accepted. We got married in May 2012 to the roar of Harley-Davidson® motorcycles, theming our day around our `other' passion. We found out we were expecting our first child in February 2013 but still managed to attend the Cider Rally, and Lisa kept riding right up until 34 weeks thanks to my home-made jacket extender. Here we are now, in November 2013 and we have the newest addition to our family, and hopefully soon the H.O.G.® family, little Abigail Rose, who seems to be settled by the sound of a rumbling V-Twin..."
Alex, Head Road Captain, Plymouth Chapter UK.

DREAM RIDE
In 2012, Plymouth Chapter were approached by David Lewis of 1066 Chapter to see if they could help fulfil a local lady's dream to ride on a Harley-Davidson. Val White is 70 years old and was diagnosed with cancer six years ago with a life expectation of five years. But she's still with us, and still ticking off things on her `bucket list'.
Plymouth Chapter rose to the challenge. In the same year, Membership Secretary Richard Lucking lost his wife Eliza to cancer and, in conversations with Val over the support they both received from the local branch of the MacMillan Cancer Support organisation, The Mustard Tree, Val insisted she make a donation to them, the Chapter's chosen charity.
During Val's ride across parts of Dartmoor, they took a small detour to call in at her local golf club to the amazement and delight of her friends. They were surprised to see and hear a group of Harleys® arrive at their clubhouse with Val sitting astride an Electra Glide®! It appears Val has a reputation for living life to the full, and she didn't disappoint!

HARLEY® FOR HARLEY

1066 TAKE THE CHAPTER CROWN

Congratulations to 1066 Chapter who have again claimed top titles in the National Chapter Challenge, winning the awards for the Chapter with the greatest number of miles accumulated and the greatest number of participants, with 189 Chapter members taking part.
The chapter with the highest average number of miles per participant was Peak Riders with 7,335 miles. And the individual participant who accumulated the greatest number of miles all on their own was Adam Anderson from Hogsback Chapter, racking up a truly tremendous 24,887 miles.
A very honourable mention is also deserved by the Rolling Hills Chapter for their extraordinary efforts in getting photos of their members at various rallies to gain bonus points at seven out of the eight possible rallies in that element of the Challenge.
This year's turnout was better than

ever with more than half of all 38 UK & Ireland H.O.G.® Chapters taking part and a total of more than 600 participants riding almost 2.5 MILLION miles the equivalent of travelling around the world 100 times!
The 2014 Chapter Challenge kicks off on March 31. For details on how you can participate, contact your Chapter Director or check out the Chapter Challenge section on www.hogeuropegallery.co.uk.
The 2013 results are: Greatest number of miles: 1066 Chapter Greatest number of participants: 1066 Chapter Individual with the greatest number of miles: Adam Anderson, Hogsback Chapter Greatest average number of miles: Peak Riders Dave Sanders, UK & Ireland Chapter Challenge co-ordinator

"We have just introduced Harley Stallard as our new Chapter mascot," explains Barry Gillespie, Director of Geordie Chapter. "And he's a very special little lad."
Two-year-old Harley Stallard was born three months prematurely and suffered a bleed on the brain, leaving him with cerebral palsy. Despite warnings from doctors that he would never walk or talk, Harley has defied expectations by talking and it is hoped he will one day be able to walk with the help of special equipment.
"One of our members was contacted by his dad," says Barry. "He told us about Harley and his love of motorbikes. Every time one goes by he wants to see it.
"On this particular day he was feeling down in the dumps. It coincided with our monthly Chapter meeting, so about 10 members went round his house to cheer him up! And so the story began."
The Chronicle Sunshine Fund (which provides disabled children with the equipment that Harley needs) have provided Harley with a specialised trike costing £972, in order to improve his chances of building leg strength, give him the opportunity to have some independence and enable him to play outdoors with sisters Kaci, three, and Kia, six.
"On the launch day of the new 2014 Harley-Davidson RUSHMORE bikes we officially made him our mascot. We presented him with a waistcoat and put some Geordie Chapter patches on it for him. Newcastle Harley-Davidson®, the Chapter's sponsoring dealer, gave him a Harley rucksack filled with Harley-Davidson toys. He was thrilled with it! I don't need to say any more than that, his smile says it all." www.geordiehog.com

CROESO! BLACK MOUNTAINS CHAPTER WALES

Launched in November 2013, Black Mountains Chapter, sponsored by Swansea Harley-Davidson®, is the first H.O.G.® Chapter to be based in Wales. And, as Assistant Director & Secretary Adrian Vaughan tells HOG® magazine, on their enrolment day they welcomed 122 new members and held their first full ride-out on January 12.
"We have a full monthly ride-out programme for 2014 with five experienced Road Captains and we're eagerly looking forward to this year's Chapter Challenge!"
Prior to their first proper outing, the Chapter arranged an introductory ride-out for the less-experienced riders. This ride was particularly special for one new Chapter member, Harry Jones:
"I bought the Harley Iron. But what was I doing?! Seventy-one years of age, two replacement hips, a wired shoulder, a damaged knee... my wife said I was mad, my neighbours urged caution, but secretly admired my recklessness.
"I last rode a bike 46 years ago, and that was a very small Japanese bike, but at least I had a full licence that allowed me to ride a bike of any size.
"I had two days `back to riding' with a Harley instructor, but today I had to prove myself on the first ride-out with the Black Mountains Chapter.
"I met up with the group and any initial fears disappeared in a torrent of friendliness and encouragement with: "Don't worry, we've all been there. We'll look after you."
And they certainly did. It was exhilarating, exciting and totally liberating. The procession of Harleys in formation sped off with that distinctive sound and I was part of it! We arrived at Mumbles with admiring glances from all the onlookers. Members took it in their stride and I tried to look as if I was always part of it. There was plenty of banter with newly found friends from all walks of life, but all equal in the Harley-Davidson family."

In August, we had an enquiry from The Alnwick Garden, a world-class visitor attraction and little-known charity, situated on the grounds of The Duke of Northumberland.
The grounds, which date back to 1750, were once owned by the first Duke of Northumberland and were originally landscaped by Capability Brown. The current garden is from the vision of Her Grace, The Duchess herself, Jane Percy and the designs of celebrated international garden designers Peter and Jaques Wirtz.
Elderberries Project Manager, Reemer Bailey, contacted the Geordie Chapter with an idea to raise awareness of, and possibly funds for, the charity work of that organisation.
The idea was to turn The Alnwick Garden into a motorcycle enthusiast's dreamland on Saturday, October 19. Given the venue, how could we decline an invitation to help?! The event was also made our Chapter's `Pink Ride' by Dawn

Beatey and our Ladies to raise awareness for breast cancer.
Tribute was paid to Her Grace for recognising her determination to establish the garden, plus her commitment towards its charity programmes, by way of a specially made Certificate of Appreciation.
Head Road Captain James Jobson organised a ride from the dealership to The Alnwick Garden.
We set off around 10.30am, arriving in brilliant sunshine. The Duchess arrived at 3pm. Her Grace rode pillion behind Ray Hales, owner of a Harley-Davidson Trike.
I was lucky enough to present a Certificate of Appreciation from the Geordie Chapter, Newcastle HarleyDavidson and H-D UK. We had a fantastic day and raised £685 for the charity. Many thanks again to Her Grace what a lovely lady! Barry Gillespie, Geordie Chapter Director www.geordiehog.com

others from nearby chapters and even some tourists. October marks Alba's famous Truffle Festival, which lasts all month and means the town is packed with people from all over the world, including some from America who were very proud to tell us that they too had a Harley back home.
We spent the night with music, dancing and lots of fun. There we were, ready to embark upon a new adventure together with a fantastic group of people with a love for biking and partying.

WISH UPON A HARLEY®
Most children only need to express a wish and their nearest and dearest make every effort to see they get what they want. Unfortunately, there are also children whose health makes the fulfilment of many wishes impossible. So it gave us enormous pleasure to be able to allow 16-year-old Fabian, who was disabled three years ago in an accident, to fulfil his dream.
Our sponsoring dealer, Gernot Matthies in Nendingen, received an enquiry from a social worker as to whether there was any possibility of bringing joy to the young Harley® fan. Gernot's Bodensee Donau Chapter agreed on the spot to take Fabian on a ride-out. As he is unable to ride himself, even in a sidecar, our deputy Volker drove Fabian and his parents in style in a Ford Mustang Cabriolet through the beautiful route of Remstal. Wonderful weather and many bends ensured a superb experience for both Fabian and his eight-strong Harley escort.
We were delighted to be able to present Fabian with a Harley leather jacket with the chapter's patch, a chapter T-shirt and a Harley cap, all small mementos to remind him of his day and to give him the motivation to persevere with his arduous rehabilitation schedule. We had the opportunity to get to know a brave

young man and an impressively committed family.
We are looking forward to our next ride-out together, as well as another trip with Fabian! Ursula Lux, Germany
LUCKY SEVEN
The Alba Chapter, named after a beautiful town in the province of Cuneo and capital of the Langhe area, celebrated its seventh birthday last October. To celebrate we organised a ride-out in the Langhe hills, which were bursting with spectacular autumn colours. We stopped in the lovely town of Monforte for a coffee in the square and a good chat about the riding season, which by then was coming to an end, then headed back for the big birthday party.
Having reached Alba, we went to Piazza Garibaldi, a square in the centre of town where we celebrate every year. Pizza and beef were on offer to everybody, members or not, including friends who had come from Switzerland,

THE KEY TO KINDNESS
On June 15, 2013, on the A1 motorway between Bremen and Hamburg, when I was on my way to Norway on my 2010 Harley-Davidson® Road King®, some Germans who were, and still are, completely unknown to me did me a big favour.
After filling up at a petrol station, I started off again, engaged cruise control and was riding along for a good 20 minutes when a Toyota 4x4 drew up alongside me and a passenger opened the window and waved what immediately appeared to be my bunch of keys.
Stopping on the hard shoulder, the passenger came towards me, gave me what were definitely my keys and explained that she had picked them up at the service station from where I had just set off.
The Harley is fitted with a hands-free `key fob' that is part of the Smart Security System that you need to start the bike, otherwise it sets off an alarm. However, I had the habit of attaching the key fob to my belt. When I got off my bike, it fell underneath without my realising and, as it was sufficiently close to the security module, had allowed this to be deactivated, meaning I was able to start the bike and ride off. If later on I had switched the engine off, I would have really been stuck.
The people who not only picked up the key fob but also went out of their

way to try and find me deserve all my gratitude, which I could not express at the time in view of the risks we were taking on the hard shoulder of a very busy motorway. This letter is a personal thank-you to them. Georges Darracq, France
MILWAUKEE MAGIC
Before the festivities for the HarleyDavidson 110th/H.O.G.® 30th anniversary in Milwaukee, I had made contact with the Milwaukee H.O.G. Chapter via Facebook and was promptly invited on various ride-outs (including a breakfast ride, a lunch ride etc.). During the first morning meeting after my arrival, Jim (Quill) Lingle noticed the German flag on my Electra Glide® as we eyeballed one another for the first time. Our acquaintance grew into friendship as we walked the festival grounds. Riding on more tours, we got to know one another better and better.
During a stop-off on the lunch ride the day before the Parade in a Bavarian beer hall (they do exist in Milwaukee, among other places!), I was invited by Crusher (the Chapter director) to ride with them in the 110th Parade. My surprise and delight knew no bounds. What an honour to take part in such a parade the chance of a lifetime! We duly met the following morning on a vast site so that all parade participants could be lined up in formation. Then I was actually riding with the chapter in the Parade. It was a marvellous, moving and completely wonderful experience, studded with beautiful memories. At many points from

out of the ranks of spectators I heard the cry of "Deutschland, Deutschland", and handshakes were the order of the day. It made me very proud to be noticed as a German H.O.G. member, and to be part of the big Harley family right there at that moment.
We subsequently met up for various ride-outs into the Milwaukee hinterland, visited the Harley-Davidson MuseumTM where I found my rivet, and I was also shown around downtown Milwaukee, visiting the Art Museum, Pfister Hotel and much more. Finally, Jim invited me to a little dinner at his home, after which we took our leave of one another, hoping to meet again in the near future.
I would like to thank the Milwaukee H.O.G. Chapter in particular Sharon, Jim and Crusher for this unique and unforgettable experience, their care, support and the great family atmosphere! Ingo Richter, Germany
WEATHERING THE STORM
I had been persuaded to put all my energy into the Saalbach Rally in Austria. Concerned about the weather, I was reassured that the past three years had been so hot people returned burnt.
A few days before leaving, I posted the weather forecast on the Facebook page of the Chianti Chapter, which predicted heavy rain. As a joke, I suggested we go by van, which was met with the usual teasing about how Harley fans don't stop at anything.
The day of departure finally came around. In Bologna we caught up with

another group of friends and headed for the Brenner Pass together. We crossed the border into Austria and it rained non-stop.
The Saalbach Rally was a good one. We all had fun and the Chianti Chapter made a good impression. With around 30 of us, we were quite a large group of bikers, always out in front making a noise.
On Sunday morning we had to go back to Italy. Woken up by a sudden knock on the door and someone shouting "Achtung, the bike...", we had to rescue our Harleys, otherwise there was a risk of the river washing them away.
Having moved our bikes to safety, we found out that all the roads into Italy were cut off, meaning we would have to stay another night. We spent the day planning possible alternative routes home.
The next day, a group of riders left early. They would take the lead in the midst of landslides and floods. The route was one mountain pass, the Gerlos, on to Innsbruck and the Brenner Pass. Our group headed off later on the usual route, but after 2km we had to stop. Work had started to remove the debris of a landslide and we would have to wait for about two hours.
As soon as the road was reopened a crowd of Harleys started up. Like a swarm of busy bees, the bikes started off in single file. We rode our bikes over treacherous gravel, along a stretch of
>> road that was 1,755 metres above

sea level with an 18-per-cent gradient, through mud and water, with our wheels throwing the stones around. We only stopped when we were certain that we were nearly in Italy and wouldn't encounter any further problems.
Special thanks go to Hotel Gappmaier in Saalbach. Despite being flooded, they looked after us impeccably. A very heartfelt thank-you. Vincenzo Fumia, Italy
A FULL HARLEY® HOUSE
Everybody in the Paroli family belongs to the H.O.G.® Chianti Chapter in Italy; my

dream for each of us to have a Harley® has come true. I spend many hours in my garage doing little maintenance jobs and polishing; we like our HarleyDavidsons® to always be gleaming. After every outing we dust them off with a small air hose and then use a rag and elbow grease.
I ride a highly chromed 2005 Sportster® 1200, spray painted with a medieval coat of arms signed by a herald from the Heraldic Academy, which certifies that it has been done in accordance with the regulations used in the year 1300.

My son, Leonardo, rides a black 1977 AMF Harley-Davidson SST 250 that I bought when I was 19. He is currently only able to ride around empty car parks because he hasn't got his licence yet. A long time ago, I sold it very cheaply but years later I came across it abandoned in a barn, almost completely rusted and no longer rideable. I bought it back for much more than I'd sold it for and meticulously restored it so that we can ride it on our trips.
My wife, Anna Paola, rides a flaming 2005 Sportster 883. We bought it second hand and, much to our delight, we discovered in the logbook that its first owner was the famous Italian singer, Max Pezzali.
My daughter, Gaia, rides the oldest bike in our collection, a blue 1976 AMF Harley-Davidson SST 250. Bought partially renovated in 2009, it has been completely restored to its original condition and is now safe to ride through the streets after 38 years. It has already taken the Historical Motorcycle test and been awarded the gold number plate of the ASI, the bestknown Italian organisation concerned with historical vehicles.
And when will there be a beautiful Softail® in the garage? Quite soon, I hope! Alessandro Paroli, Italy

REVIEW
Polish Bike Week
Karpacz, Poland August 9-11, 2013 www.hog.wroclaw.pl

FEEL THE LOVE

The Love Ride Switzerland has been held in and around Dübendorf every year since 1993. With around 5,500 participating motorbikes and almost 10,000 visitors, this offshoot of the original Love Ride in California is the greatest charity event on the Swiss motorbike scene. Every year it attracts fans from Switzerland and abroad to the Glatt Valley near Zurich. Harley-Davidson® Switzerland has been the event's main sponsor since 2003 and makes a substantial contribution year after year. All income generated during the event directly benefits people with muscular disorders.
In past years sponsors and countless faithful donors have contributed sums of between 400,000 and 500,000 Swiss francs (approximately 325,000 to 400,000). The

money goes to finance regular summer camps for the Swiss society for children, youths and young adults affected by muscular disorders. But more individual needs are also met, such as the procurement of new electric wheelchairs or wheelchairfriendly conversions of private houses or schools.
Once again this year, Harley-Davidson will be flying the flag at the event and welcoming all participants and visitors in the big top with a fine cup of coffee. Live music and various motorbike-related events will provide outstanding entertainment throughout the day. The high point, however, is the ride-out, the `Love Ride' itself. Come and ride with us! As in previous years, tickets for the event can be purchased from local Harley-Davidson dealers.

POLISH BIKE WEEK
PLEASURE IN POLAND
Polish Bike Week took place August 9-11 in Karpacz in southwestern Poland, around 60 miles west of Wroclaw. The event was organised by the H.O.G.® Wroclaw Chapter, in association with the local Appaloosa Harley® dealership.
Numerous activities were put on to celebrate the 110th anniversary of Harley-Davidson®, which included `The Legend on Tour'. This gave event-goers the opportunity to ride demonstration vehicles of the latest models. Those who took part received a special 110 H-D pin, each with a unique number that entered them into a prize draw to win a motorcycle from Milwaukee. Another winner was Marcin Juwa from Zielona Góra, who won the two-day Polish championship in motorcycle slow riding.
The Saturday evening culminated with a concert from Dzem, Polish rock legends, playing hits including My Harley. Earlier in the afternoon, the lead singer of the band had led about 1,000 motorcycles along the route lined with many residents, motorcycle fans and tourists.
Music also came from concert soloist Maciej Balcar, who entered the stage riding a Harley and wearing the special Freedom Jacket, which symbolises the link between Harley-Davidson and a passion for freedom. The Polish organisers then gave the Freedom Jacket, with a Karpacz 2013 pin attached, to a rider from the Czech Republic with the wish to spread freedom all over the world.
The evening concert saw more than 6,000 Harley fans gather together in the warm and friendly atmosphere that is characteristic of all H.O.G. meetings. Polish Bike Week will return for more celebrations later this year.

The stunning setting of Goa hosted the fast-growing India Bike Week event
India Bike Week, the Woodstock of biking festivals, returned as did Harley-Davidson® to celebrate the shared spirit of freedom, adventure and passion for motorcycling with H.O.G.® members from across the country. On January 17, 2014 the rumble of motorcycle engines echoed as more than 1,000 H.O.G. members from the 13 chapters in India took to the streets of Goa.
The roads leading from Baga to Vagator witnessed the biggest riding spectacle of the week, the traditional H.O.G. Rally Parade, a striking display of roaring metal and flashing chrome. It was graced by the presence of Frank Savage from Harley-Davidson's Product Development Center in Wisconsin, who is the industrial design and styling lead for Harley-Davidson's new StreetTM platform. The celebrations were unbounded as the new Harley-Davidson Street 750TM was unveiled at the event, receiving a thunderous response from H.O.G. members and enthusiasts.
H.O.G. has always meant different things to different riders, with the only constant being that it encompasses the true spirit of brotherhood and camaraderie. Harley-Davidson India organised

Making a splash with the Bash!

The Big Brum Bash is reborn as the bigger and better Big Bank Holiday Bash!

"The Big Brum Bash was always a familyorientated event," explains Birmingham UK Chapter's Jason Garey. "But the Big Bank Holiday Bash expands that idea: it's a proper weekend getaway with bike riding and family fun at a great venue where you can do as much or as little as you like."
As was announced late last year, the Big Brum Bash has become the bigger and better Big Bank Holiday Bash, to be held at West Midlands Water Ski Centre in Tamworth from May 23-26, 2014. The organising committee is creating a unique shindig for everyone in the UK to enjoy.
"There are activities for all the family but there's also the opportunity to ride your bike, have some fun and get away from everything for the weekend."
"We had been discussing the concept of increasing the size of the rally for some time but could not really take on the financial risk that a bigger rally would bring," says Jason. "I had discussed ideas with Marjorie Rae over several coffees. She said that the concept of a bigger rally in the Midlands was a good one, but would require the input of several other Chapters to reduce the risks and divide the workload."
Jason explains that all of the work for the Big Brum Bash was undertaken by Birmingham Chapter members. "It was

a lot to ask to pull a rally together and to enjoy the event."
And so Birmingham Chapter joined forces with the Stoke, Wolfruna and Rolling Hills Chapters, and in dividing the workload they have reduced the amount of time required of each volunteer, which will allow more time for everyone to enjoy the event. "There are representatives from all Chapters on the organising committee and there haven't been any disagreements... yet!" says Jason.

For anyone who has been to a Big Brum Bash, you'll already know what a great venue the West Midlands Water Ski Centre is, and 2014's event promises to make more of what's on offer.
Not only is it a great place to chill out by the water, have a drink with your mates or get out and ride in some great countryside, but the venue offers everything a watersports enthusiast could want. There are three lakes (a dedicated tournament arena, ski school lake and boat owners' lake), so whether you fancy water skiing or wakeboarding it's at your fingertips. As for accommodation, there's camping, or you can stay in one of the many cabins chilling out on the sun deck when the sun makes an appearance.
The full programme of events for the weekend will be released soon and will include: waterside camping/free camping (with the possibility of stay extension), guided ride-outs, live music on Friday and Saturday followed by chill-out Sunday, trader village and family games area. Tickets are on sale now.
Order your tickets before March 31, 2014, and you'll receive a pack of vouchers worth up to £40! The organisers have teamed up with their sponsoring dealers, Birmingham Harley-Davidson, Wolverhampton Harley-Davidson, Stoke Harley-Davidson and Cheltenham HarleyDavidson so you'll get £10 off the price of a T-shirt at each of the dealerships when you visit during 2014. Hurry, as this exclusive offer will ONLY be available with advanced tickets sold before March 31, 2014.

CIDER RALLY? YES!

There is no question! The Cider Rally 2014 is on!

Stop press! Bridgwater Chapter Director Gill Mogg is delighted to be able to now announce the good news that the Cider Rally will most definitely go ahead as planned in 2014 despite rumours and some concerns that the rally might be affected by changes in ownership of the venue. Gill wants everyone to know: "The rally has NOT been cancelled!"
It will take place on May 2-5, as always on the first UK May Bank Holiday

weekend. Details can be found on the website. Gill `Moggy' Mogg said that while the venue is undergoing changes, this will not affect the 2014 Cider Rally which will celebrate Bridgwater Chapter's 25th year.
The Bridgwater party brigade with Moggy at the helm never fail to bring a spectacularly fun event with games, music, fancy dress, local cider and much, much more! As such, the Chapter is inundated with messages from previous

attendees such as this one: "The Cider Rally was an absolute
pleasure, buzz, joy and privilege to close the door on a crazy messed-up world for a weekend, be able to do my thing in a massive room full of so many fab people and be part of a fab weekend! Thank you so much, as this weekend I lived the dream!"
High praise indeed, and well deserved. Book your tickets now before they run out! bridgwaterhog.co.uk

Making hay

From June 20-22, 2014, Great Western Chapter's rally, Hogs in the Hayfields (HITH), will be enjoying its seventh year at Cleve Rugby Club, in the quiet suburb of Mangotsfield, Bristol.
"Although there will be a wide choice of rallies to attend during the year, catering for all types of rally-goers," says Director Barry `Bazzer' Aggett, "we hope that the following details may encourage you to come to ours. HITH is relatively small and so creates a really friendly atmosphere. You can be sure of a warm welcome on arrival with a free cuppa and cake. Last year we had a Stars in their Eyes-style show and a risqué balloon dance!" adds Barry. "And, by popular demand, we will be having our very own original Gurzels (our LOH ladies) who will be strutting their stuff."
The Saturday ride-out will take in lots of beautiful West Country scenery and there's plenty of time for solo exploration too. Cleve Rugby Club has two bar areas and a spacious lounge for bands and entertainment. There is on-site camping or hotels nearby with a shuttle bus. THROUGH THE BLOOD
Portraits by Kevin J. Miyazaki
Some families are connected by blood in the traditional sense. Others are bound by what's in their blood: the passions they share and the common dreams they chase. At the H.O.G.® 30th Anniversary Celebration in Milwaukee, we asked H.O.G. members from around the globe to pose for portraits and share their stories. What we discovered confirmed what we already knew: no matter who we are, what clothes we wear or which flag we wave, we all bleed black and orange.

You'll find lace mesh liners, dye-cut reflectivity, satin piping and a flattering fit that follows your natural silhouette, ensuring comfort and confidence both on and off the bike.
Give your wardrobe extra depth with the Dimension RCS Waterproof Leather and Functional Jackets. Part of the Women's Rider Comfort System line, these styles are your personal weapon against all-weather riding conditions, with waterproofing and extended side venting as well as reflective touches, given stylish emphasis through debossed leather and metallic graphics.

1914 Silent Gray Fellow Sport

Today's range of Harley-Davidson® motorcycles offers a combination of stylish design, comfort and ground-breaking technology that make riding one a memorable experience. Given that the Motor Company is more than 110 years old, you'd expect the motorcycles of the early days to be a far cry from the sophisticated machines of today. This is certainly what we expected when HOG® magazine took one of just a few remaining 1914 Silent Gray Fellow Sport models for a ride in London's Battersea Park. How wrong we were.
When you first set eyes on the stark beauty of an original 1914 Harley-Davidson, you can only imagine the day it rolled out of the shed, being ridden around the block in Juneau Avenue. It looks like it does in the old photos, but to admire this amazing piece of engineering in the flesh is a real treat.
We had met to celebrate the fact that this model is 100 years old, and its owner, John Warr, is this year celebrating 90 years of his family-owned Harley-Davidson dealership in London's King's Road. And what better way to celebrate than pedal-starting the Silent Gray Fellow and inviting H.O.G.®'s very own Jeremy Pick to take it for a ride?
"This is one of only a few examples of the 1914 Sport a key model in the history of Harley® known to exist," enthuses Jeremy, "and its owner is standing right next to me as he hands it over for road testing on the rather greasy roads of London in November. No pressure then!" Considering the bike has been ridden by at least one of the original founders of the Harley-Davidson Motor Company, the prospect of dropping it is not to be contemplated.
As Jeremy enjoys riding the bike around the park, John nervously tells us he's never let anyone else ride it before. "I ride it every year in the annual London to Brighton Pioneer Run in my capacity as founder and director of both Chelsea & Fulham and Meridian Chapters," he says. "It's a great ride I get up to 35mph at some points of the route. I have to take it easy, though, as the single-drum brake at the back isn't that sharp these days," he smiles. When asked about the origins of the Silent Gray Fellow's name, John says: "A hand-operated `silencing' valve on the muffler enabled quiet running in town. On the open road the valve could be opened for maximum performance and noise. There were two colour options: Gray or Piano Black."
An avid collector, John first set eyes on the motorcycle as it emerged from a barn in the West Country during the 1970s. Warr's was commissioned to restore the motorcycle back to its former glory for the

complicated, but really fun."

If you are used to the control systems of

modern motorcycles, riding the Silent Gray

says. "Firstly, many of the controls are

the leather belt-drive, clutchless versions that preceded the 1914 model; they have become the standard on modern bikes at least partly due to the influence of this bike.
Once on the move, the motor propels the bike forward at surprising speed considering the less-than-advanced state of the braking systems of the time. "Once you get used to handling the clutch lever then changing up and down through the transmission, it is much more manageable," says Jeremy.
So what is Jeremy's conclusion? "The 1914 Silent Gray Fellow Sport is an incredibly advanced motorcycle for its time, with features now standard on modern bikes an effective clutch and final drive, multi-speed transmission making it an almost practical proposition for a modern rider, even in London traffic.
"I found myself handing back the century-old icon of Harley history with mixed emotions: relief at returning it unharmed; and regret at having to hand back such an iconic, museum-quality example of the early motorcycle genius of the Harley and Davidson family. Huge thanks to John Warr for his trust in letting me loose on such an irreplaceable vehicle." Visit www.warrs.com to see the full

The model is a `1914 Harley-Davidson® 10C' owned by Warr's Harley-Davidson of London, Europe's oldest Harley® dealership. The new 1914 models from Harley-Davidson would be fitted with a variety of new hardware and improvements, and set a new standard for the emerging two-wheeled marketplace. When it was new the 10C cost around $300.
Nearly 100 pioneering motorcycle companies would disappear from the history books by 1913, but due to the strength of its products by 1914 Harley was one of the top three producers.

1. BEFORE THE BAR & SHIELD: The Bar & Shield design was not generally used on the early pre-war bikes. This `clover leaf' H-D® motif was the logo of the day.
2. CHAIN DRIVE: The chain drive was a massive leap forward from the previous year's leather belts, which

were prone to slip and break. The rear hub contains the `new for 1914' twospeed transmission not unlike a bicycle, and has more than 300 moving parts within it.
3. BAND BRAKE: Around the outside of the rear hub is a contracting-band brake, which offers minimum stopping

assistance. Very prone to heat fade.
4. PEDAL START: The new starter pedal design enabled the rider to start the bike by pedalling away either on the centre stand or by applying pressure to one pedal when standing beside the bike.

FULLY FLOATING SPRUNG SEAT: The leather-wrapped jockey seat is positioned on a sprung-mounted seat post.
5. THROTTLE: The throttle is piano-wire push/pull-controlled and stays where it's put early cruise control! The left hand `throttle' is for advance and

retard of the ignition. Stop the engine by rotating the throttle fully shut and then some more. This decompresses the engine and it stops.
HANDLEBARS: Since paved roads were still scarce these wide handlebars, with internal controls, provided plenty of leverage to help the

rider negotiate the ruts and potholes of those early cart tracks.
6. CLUTCH: The clutch is footoperated with a hand lever `assister'. The gears are selected using the small lever on the tank top. The operating rod stretches across the tank and down

to the rear hub. Push the lever forward for first and all the way back for second.
7. ENGINE: The 35cubic-inch motor was fed by a singlebore carburettor and ignited by a Bosch magneto. The piston and barrel are both made of cast iron and both intake and exhaust

valves open mechanically. Top speed is around 40mph.
8. OIL: This `Sport' model features a single-feed oil pump upgrade with a sight glass to check it's working. When riding oil was still pumped into the motor by the rider via a hand pump mounted

on the petrol tank. The system was total loss, ie. no oil was recirculated.
FLOORBOARDS: 1914 was the first year HarleyDavidson installed footboards as standard, providing plenty of room for riding boots.

TYRES: White tyres were a popular option at the time, though tread patterns left something to be desired. On this bike the tread is marked out in repeated block letters declaring `Non Skid'!

A BEAUTIFUL DREAM >> Linda Norberg from
Sweden's 1950 Panhead

The Castle Run near Copenhagen, which will be in its third year in 2014, attracts some spot-on bobbers and choppers from all around Scandinavia. Held in the grounds of a magnificently gothic castle at Krenkerup, it's the ideal location for a biker party as the owner Patrick also runs an independent brewery!
When we were last there, a trio of Swedish choppers a Harley® Knucklehead and two Panheads immediately caught my eye when they rolled in, especially as one of them belonged to a woman. It's sad that the custom bike scene is still dominated by men, and gratifying when you see a woman riding a righteous chopper

"My dream from when I was a kid was to have a Harley® ... a black Harley"

rather than perching on the pillion pad so I wandered over to ask Linda about her Panhead.
She hails from Gothenburg, and with the encouragement of her partner Peter Longhair, she achieved a long-held ambition of getting her motorcycle licence three years ago. And there was no wobbling about on cheap Japanese bikes as she embarked on her biking career, oh no. When your other half is a well-known

chopper builder and fabricator, your first bike is just never going to be that mundane. So here we have a beautiful 1950 Panhead, built entirely to Linda's specifications.
"My dream from when I was a kid was to have a Harley," she smiles, "a black Harley!". Peter encouraged her to get her licence "do it now... take your test!" and Linda spotted her dream bike soon afterwards. "I didn't have the money, but

52 HOG®

Custom

bought it anyway!" she says. It was a well-known Swedish bike that had once been awarded third prize at the famous Norrtälje bike show. "It was purple, and covered in iron crosses," laughs Linda, "and that had to change."
The first change was the black paint, of course, and then a complete style revamp. "I didn't want it to be identified as the former owner's bike," explains Linda, which is understandable. The stance was established using a four inch-over springer bolted to the original Harley 1950 wishbone frame; the engine was also completely rebuilt.
Of course, the way this bike looks now sums up how the Swedes kept the traditional chopper torch burning when

builders throughout the rest of Europe let it go out. It sports a vintage Bates ribbed seat and pillion pad; beautiful and rare sculptural Imperial-finned primary cover; Bates light; Harley Hummer tank; Randy Smith CCE valve covers; vintage MCM exhaust... the list of desirable chopper parts on this bike goes on and on. And remember, this stuff was being stashed in Swedish garages long before eBay and the period-correct czars made it so expensive.
Peter Longhair narrowed the drag bars and good friend Mattias `LeBeef' Andersson applied his considerable metal-manipulating talents to the fabrication of the sissy bar and those neat tailored-to-fit foot controls.

The electrical system was up-rated from six to 12 volts with an auto-advance distributor, and Linda was finally on the road. How cool is it to fulfil a childhood dream? Especially when that dream looks as good as this...

your mobile phone, your stereo or your computer. It's the intuitiveness, the usability and the graphic interface that makes it easy for you to understand and use."
And as one ventures further into the RUSHMORE story, other similar stories emerge, often with more of a human element. For instance, during the development of the Boom!TM Box infotainment system, some engineers had to repeatedly hear the song `Daylight' by indie pop duo Matt & Kim, a blessing or curse depending on your musical tastes. As it became clear that the aerodynamics of the new bat-wing fairing would defeat `beard lift', wind tunnel video shows an engineer wearing a not-too-realistic

artificial beard. Details like these add flavour and dimension to the story.
Another unique aspect of the Project RUSHMORE story is the number of prototype parts it generated. These include countless parts produced through SLS (selective laser sintering, a form of 3D printing) prototyping, which uses the CAD drawing to produce an exact, full-size, three-dimensional part. It would be nice to think that Harley-Davidson could hang on to every last bit of this historic treasure trove, but the overwhelming amount of Project RUSHMORE development material would be impossible to place in the Archives.
The Archives has also preserved a robust `oral history' consisting of on-camera

interviews with Engineering, Styling, and Marketing personnel. These pieces capture facial expressions, emotions, and language that other original documents cannot. These valuable bits of history are viewable only at the Harley-Davidson Museum.
By preserving so many vital details, it should be easy for future motorcycle riders to understand not just what happened to bring about the Project RUSHMORE motorcycles, but also how and why.
The Harley-Davidson MuseumTM is currently displaying the story of Project RUSHMORE in the Design Lab Gallery. To learn more, go to h-dmuseum.com.

Conny Brandl
"What I like most is that we don't just sell motorbike servicing, but a whole way of life"
58 HOG®

Conny Brandl

Words: Matt Colley Photos: Harley-Davidson® Center Wien Zündwerk
TRAILBLAZER HOG® magazine meets Conny Brandl, workshop manager at Harley-Davidson® Center Wien Zündwerk

Conny Brandl is no ordinary woman. At the age of 28, she is already heading up the workshop team at the new H-D® dealership in the north of Vienna; quite some feat in a traditionally male-dominated sphere of work. So has Harley-Davidson always been in Conny's blood, or was it a passion that developed later on her path to success?
"I first encountered H-D in 1997; when I was 12 years old my father Charly fulfilled a lifelong dream and bought a Softail® Custom. He still owns it and regularly goes on tours. He was delighted when I started my apprenticeship as a Harley® technician in 2003. Also, my brother and uncle caught the bug from my father and me, and they both ride

V-Rod® motorcycles. Even my mum likes to come out riding!"
When asked if she'd always dreamed of being a motorcycle technician, Conny replies: "I wouldn't say I specifically wanted to become a technician, but I always imagined myself in a technical profession." It's certainly not a standard career path for a schoolgirl to aspire to; has she met with any resistance on her way up the career ladder? "Of course, being a woman I am treated differently. I count myself lucky, though, that my experiences have been positive and I'm treated with a great deal of respect. Regardless of whether I'm a man or a woman, people often tell me that they find what I do cool. Some

people are somewhat sceptical to start off with as they aren't used to dealing with a woman, but as soon as they realise I've got all the right skills it's not an issue. We have plenty of female customers women always feel that they are in good hands with us!"
Conny is keen to espouse the virtues of training as a technician; although you can enter into the profession with nothing more than a school-leaver's certificate, the pathways are there for further training and development. "Qualifications are far less important than an aptitude for technical subjects. It is by no means an easy career, though, therefore further education can only help. At the end of my three-and-a-
>> half-year apprenticeship, I attended a
HOG® 59

Conny Brandl

vocational college to receive further technical and business training. A master craftsman's diploma then opened up opportunities in workshop management."
With such good opportunities for career development, why, then, aren't more women attracted to a career in mechanics? "Actually, I believe the interest is there," Conny enthuses. "Only a few dare to go for it, but I think an increasing number of women will gain a foothold in mechanics, and in technical professions in general. Working in a traditionally male-dominated field is challenging, but I enjoy it greatly."
Conny became a master motorbike technician in 2009 at the tender age of 24, and then in 2012 she uprooted from her native Bavaria in Germany to take up her position as workshop manager. "I was one of the first employees at Harley-Davidson Center Wien Zündwerk," Conny enthuses. "I supported Erich Windisch, the manager of the dealership, in setting everything up. When we had our grand opening in March 2013, I felt incredibly proud to have been there from the start."
So what does Conny herself ride? "Unfortunately I don't own a bike at the moment, but I am fortunate enough to be in the right place and can take out one of the Harleys from the workshop. I started off with a Sportster® XL883C in 2005. Then I had an XL1200X Forty-Eight® with a couple of enhancements on it." She adds, with a glint in her eye: "I am saving hard, though. My dream is to own a Softail Slim®, such a wonderful machine it's tailormade for me. Also, I love working on Dyna® bikes the 2006 models are my favourite."
Conny is keen to discuss her particular affinity with Harley-Davidson. "What I like most is that we don't just sell motorbike servicing, but a whole way of life. I have got to know so many great people at bike meets, and even at petrol stations that moment when you get off your Harley and people come up to you and talk to you because of the bike. Motorbikes make people open up."
It's no understatement to say that Conny is totally immersed in the Harley culture, but what does she like to do in her spare time? "In the high season in particular I don't get a lot of spare time, but that's fine by me. In winter, though, I like going off somewhere warm, and of course I enjoy

catching up with my family and friends." So given unlimited time and budget,
where would Conny's dream ride take her? Somewhere hot and sunny, one presumes? "Absolutely," Conny laughs. "My big dream is to go on a tour of Australia, from Brisbane via Sydney to Melbourne along the coast and, if there's enough time, as far west as Perth. That would be incredible!"
It's clear to see that Conny is an incredibly vibrant and passionate person what advice would she give to any women thinking about going into the industry?

"People will respect you more if you are prepared to ask questions of your male colleagues. And, more than anything, don't be afraid to stand your ground."
Conny is evidently happy to speak her mind; from where does she feel she gained that confidence? Who are her heroines? "My role model has always been my grandmother," Conny reflects. "She always gave her all and worked hard for everything she had. She was a remarkable woman with real fighting spirit, and an inspiration to me." Strong words from a strong woman.

NO TRAIN, NO GAIN
All H-D® technicians are enrolled in the Technician Recognition Programme delivered by the HarleyDavidson University (HDU). HDU has headquarters in Milwaukee and many technical service schools around the world in Paris, Bonn, Milan, Birmingham, Dubai and Barcelona, to mention a few. The training programme has five levels: staff, technician, advanced technician, expert and master. A Master Technician has been working in an official Harley-Davidson dealership for no less than five years, attended 12 instructor-led trainings (35 days) and passed around 40 online courses. So when you take your bike in for an Authorized H-D Service, you know that your technician is well prepared!

Brussels, early in the morning. Five friends and members of the Belgian Metropole Chapter Hans, Jef, Jan, Patrick and myself steer their rumbling Harleys® to the highway. Direction: Poland! A few minutes before, they had thrown away their mobiles. Well, at least that's what they had told their wives...

Are motorcyclists the "new nomads looking for a physical kick", as I once read somewhere? And what makes motorcycling in groups so attractive, almost addictive? After all, once the helmet is snapped down, you mainly experience all the sensory stimulations on your own. Perhaps the attraction lies in the practice of mentally `freewheeling' while

when you stop somewhere.

ROAD TRIP

Day 1 (August 10) After a long first leg of the trip, we spend our first night in Mansfeld, Germany, about 650km from Brussels. After a refreshing shower, we order Schnitzel (what else?) and beer and enjoy some German humour.
Day 2 (August 11) Today we'll meet our friend and Polish member of the Belgian Metropole Chapter, Krzysztof Stepien, in Wroclaw, about 500km from Mansfeld. None of us have ever been to Poland before and we all are a little surprised by the excellent state of the roads and the beautiful houses and cars.

I always like to mingle when I am travelling abroad and let curiosity take me. I want to fall in love somehow with the country I visit; it will soon become obvious that it's not difficult to lose your heart in Poland.
At about 4pm we turn up the driveway of our hotel in Wroclaw and even before we are able to drop off our engines three smiling faces run up to us: Krzysztof, Tomek and his teenage son Igor, all with a warm welcome. In the garden we enjoy the nice weather and a few cold beers. We get to know that Tomek is a member of the Lublin Harley-Davidson® Club and he helped to organise this journey. He will join us for most of the coming week. Language

is not an issue; we use a mixture of Dutch, French, English, Polish and the most universal language: laughter. The more beer we order, the better our Polish gets.
Time for dinner! We trust in our Polish friends and let them order the traditional cuisine. I am particularly surprised by the delicious soup, `zurek'. Another nice touch is that vodka is served instead of wine. At the end of the evening my Polish is excellent! Time for bed. Tomorrow we ride to Zakopane, another 350km.
Day 3 (August 12) This is definitely one of the most beautiful rides that we have done recently, with

62 HOG®

Belgium to Poland

perfect roads running through stunning hilly countryside. Sun, cool wind and the nice rumbling Harley® sound are our companions. I'm pretty sure every biker will recognise the feeling of freedom, the excitement of being on a road that leads you on unknown adventures.
In the early afternoon we arrive in a small village near Zakopane called Bialka Tatrzanska, where we meet Robert Wójcik, director of the Lublin Harley-Davidson Club, his wife Marzena and their sweet little two-year-old boy, Mateusz. They've arranged a very nice apartment for us for the next three days. We exchange patches, T-shirts and information about our clubs.

Due to spending several winter vacations here, Robert and Marzena know the area (the best ski resort in Poland) well. On the first evening they take us out for dinner in a charming restaurant. We enjoy traditional food and nice chats about Belgium and Poland and, of course, about bikes and our clubs. We are charmed by the friendliness of the Poles. A young couple even treats us to vodka just because we laughed and waved at their little child. Offering drinks to a Belgian makes you a lifetime friend!
Day 4 (August 13) Weather forecast: heavy showers, cloudy, storms. Without asking, our Polish friends

have ordered a minibus to get to the Wieliczka Salt Mine, a visit that's not recommended for motorcycles. Even though we're used to riding in the rain, we're happy with this arrangement. We are also happy with the fantastic breakfast!
The impressive Wieliczka Salt Mine has been producing table salt for more than 700 years. Up to 140 metres underground, a three-hour journey takes you on a 2.5km route through chambers with amazing carvings and statues, and a large collection of mining equipment. Everything is made of how could you guess right, salt!
In the afternoon, soaking wet due to
>> a heavy shower, we visit the centre of

of baking hams coming from the ovens. Where else would you be able to enjoy a string quartet during dinner?
This is our final destination in Poland and we throw ourselves into the party with no inhibitions. Unfortunately I've got to be short about this part of our journey and brush you off with a faint "what happened in Poland, stays in Poland!".

Krakow, a clean, beautiful and romantic city. We make our way to the local Harley® dealer where, after buying some T-shirts, our presence gets immortalised by some lovely pictures with the whole crew.
Hours later, with darkness having fallen quite a while ago, five Belgians and one Pole (Krzysztof is actually half Belgian) are fumbling with the key to the front door, giggling and joking.
Day 5 (August 14) Today Auschwitz-Birkenau is on our list. What can I say about this visit? That it kicks mercilessly on your soul and that tough bikers have sensitive hearts. That evening we drive to Zakopane, where an annual party takes place. The one-hour drive spent listening to Djem, a Polish blues-

rock band, through the speakers, allows us to somehow handle the impressions that overwhelmed us earlier that day. We enjoy the atmospheric, crowded streets with cosy cafes, bars, restaurants, food stalls and clubs, and rinse the lumps in our throats. We still have a magnificent evening.
Day 6 (August 15) We say goodbye to Tomek and his son, who are turning back to Lublin. His son, who reminded me of my own, was extremely proud that I had let him wear my jacket during our visit to the salt mine earlier in the week, which Tomek later thanked me for in his own special way. He has a wonderful son. I hope he's doing fine Igor, if you read this: "Hey pal!"
The route to Poznan is about 500km. Somewhere around half way we miss the planned route; this is quite an experience. Pits, bumps and grooves with a vengeance!
We leave our bikes in the parking garage of the hotel and take a taxi to the Malta Rally area in Poznan, where a Polish H.O.G.® event is taking place. It's not the biggest event we've ever been to, but definitely one of the most charming, with a really pleasant atmosphere. It is full of friendly Poles, Russians, Germans and Belgians, all mixed together with music, beer and the smell

Day 7 (August 16) Right after breakfast our machines are roaring on the driveway of the hotel. After a small sightseeing tour, we end up at the rally area again to pick up our Malta Rally T-shirt and get more acquainted with the management of the Warsaw Chapter, in particular with director Dariusz Kramek who gave us, thanks to the introduction yesterday by our Lublin friends, a very cordial welcome. We take pictures and even get a nice present for our chapter, which now has a special place in our BMC clubhouse thank you Dariusz!
In the afternoon, under a bright sun, we visit Poznan, which is among the oldest cities in Poland. By coincidence we run into some Germans whom we had met the day before at the party. I decide not to ask anything about the evening before!
In the evening we return to the meeting, where about 10 members of the Lublin Club have arrived. While fraternising, we see an excited Tomek, who has made the trip from Lublin to rejoin us. What a guy!
Later that evening we say our farewells. We express our tremendous thanks for the hospitality to Robert and his family, and to Tomek and Krzysztof, who organised the trip in a truly exceptional manner.
Day 8 (August 17) Riding, riding, riding... top day! Patrick had booked a nice bed-and-breakfast in Bad Salzuflen, Germany, which turned out to be a health resort. The older, but nevertheless still very eloquent, guests asked if we could be more quiet "Uh, we're sorry, these are Harleys!"
Day 9 (August 18) Rain, rain, rain... bad day! After a journey of 3,500km, I am happy to come home to my wife, child and animals. It is amazing how, due to a motorcycle, people get so easily connected to each other. A HarleyDavidson club in Lublin has given us, complete strangers, an extraordinary week, all because we share the same passion. This fantastic spirit makes Harley-Davidson® the best motorcycle in the world!

LEGENDS LIVE FOREVER
Indji Ghattas, Dealer Principal of Harley-Davidson® Egypt in Cairo, looks back fondly on the day when the Great Pyramids of Giza and Harley-Davidson® met

On the same roads the Pharaohs travelled with their chariots 7,000 years ago, last October their descendants rode the same path. This time, however, the chariots were Harleys®, rumbling around the Great Pyramids of Giza for a legendary photoshoot to celebrate the birth of a new milestone in the illustrious history of Harley-Davidson®: Project RUSHMORE.
The pyramids are a symbol marked by a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Harley-Davidson motorcycle is a symbol marking the pinnacle of the motorcycle world, as evidenced by the stunning

new Touring models released for model year 2014. Every pyramid stands proud, looking up towards
the skies, and every H.O.G.® Cairo Chapter member stood equally proud; proud to be part of a memorable moment combining the rider, their Harley and the Great Pyramids of Giza, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world.
Whether we have been riding for a day or for 110 years, we feel proud to belong to the legendary world of H.O.G. and Harley-Davidson, and also to a legacy of 7,000 years.

Bar & Shield
EVOLUTION OF AN ICON
It's one of the most recognisable brand logos in the world, but very little is actually known about the origins of the Harley-Davidson® Bar & Shield. The trademark application filed with the US Patent Office cites the logo as having been used since May 6, 1910, according to H-D® Archives Manager Bill Jackson, but the identity of its creator remains a mystery. One possibility, according to Jackson, is that it was designed by a Chicago agency that created advertising and marketing materials for the Motor Company. Over the years, the Bar & Shield has gone through numerous design iterations, with no formal guidelines in place for its colour, shape or usage during much of its early history.
The unusual and highly stylised Bar & Shield painted on the shipping crate in this circa-1912 photo featuring `Genial' George Puls, one of the Motor Company's first travelling salesmen, shows just how much the design has evolved over its more than 100-year history.
The familiar version of the Bar & Shield used today was designed in the early 1930s and then revived in 1976, when it was used in a series of patriotic-themed designs that adorned motorcycles and merchandise during the American Bicentennial. Today, befitting its iconic status, very strict guidelines are in place to control the design and use of one of Harley-Davidson's most revered assets. Going the distance

Endurance rider Chris Carr offers some advice for preparing your mind and your motorcycle for long distance

Endurance rider Chris Carr has made a name for himself by riding very long distances in very short periods of time. In 2008, he had the record for a run from Dead Horse, Alaska to Key West, Florida well within his grasp before mandatory hurricane evacuations in the Keys cut his trip short. Carr also successfully completed the Hoka Hey Motorcycle Challenge, an endurance run from Key West to Homer, Alaska, on a Harley-Davidson® XR1200XTM not exactly your ideal touring motorcycle!
Chances are, most of us are never going to race across the far reaches of the North American continent. Nonetheless, there is much to be learned from Carr's adventures that can benefit us mere mortals even if

your idea of an `endurance' ride might simply mean having to gas up more than once in the same day. Here, Carr offers us some helpful tips for prolonging your time in the saddle...
Serious saddle time Riding 18, 24, or even 30 hours straight is not for everyone. In fact, I don't even recommend it, except under very special circumstances, and following a lot of training and preparation. But that's a typical day in the saddle for me when I'm in the midst of an endurance ride challenge.
Notice that I referred to my rides in terms of hours, not miles. When most people talk about their longest ride in

a day they'll say they rode 500, 600, 700 miles or whatever. And that's fine. But what makes a ride challenging has more to do with time spent than miles covered, because riding 30 miles through a congested city at rush hour can be far more fatiguing than riding, say, 100 miles on the open road and it may well take the same amount of time! And that speaks directly to good planning, which is one of the most important aspects of a successful long-distance ride even if you're not trying to break a record.
Planning When I rode from Dead Horse to Key West, I knew in advance every place I was going

with the latest gadgets and accessories...

Sound advice
BioEarsTM earplugs
As much as we all love the roaring sound of our Harleys®, the noise associated with riding can leave our ears vulnerable to hearing loss. This can be due to high volume levels getting caught under motorcycle helmets, with wind noise being the main factor depending on how fast you are travelling. Studies have shown that riding at speeds of just 40mph can produce wind noise that can permanently damage your hearing. Other factors may include traffic and the size of your bike's engine.
Quite simply, riding without hearing protection puts you at risk of irreversible hearing damage; this is why it is worthwhile investing in a pair of comfortable and reusable earplugs.
Cirrus' BioEarsTM achieve up to 22dB of noise reduction. Made of soft silicone, they contain the unique ACTIValoeTM, a powerful anti-microbial agent that renders the earplugs free from bacteria, meaning they will last for many years of riding.
BioEarsTM come in packs of three reusable pairs in a waterproof polypropylene carry case, with an RRP of £4.59. For details of how to purchase BioEarsTM earplugs, please call Cirrus on +44 (0)1926 428129 or email info@cirrushealthcare.co.uk. Alternatively, if you are in the UK or Ireland, you can purchase them from Boots chemists.
How to enter We've got 10 packs of BioEarsTM earplugs to give away to H.O.G.® members.
TWITTER To be in with a chance of winning, just send us a DM on Twitter @hogeurope telling us what your favourite riding accessory is; your gadget may even be featured in a future issue of HOG® magazine! Be sure to include your name and membership number. The closing date for entries is March 31, 2014.

Road test
At HOG® magazine we found the BioEarsTM earplugs very comfortable to wear, so much so that they were almost unnoticeable once in place. This was due to the silicone being very pliable, allowing it to mould to fit the shape of the ears perfectly.
As far as protecting the hearing is concerned, the earplugs offer an excellent level of noise reduction. It is worth noting that you should remember to take the case with you when you're riding; to retain their antibacterial properties, the earplugs should always be stored in the case when not in use, as they attract fluff.
We would definitely recommend the BioEarsTM earplugs; they are easy to use and definitely help to protect your hearing from the inimitable purr of the Harley-Davidson® engine!

Exhaust
Gemma Kirby, Operations Specialist for H.O.G.® EMEA, chronicles an incredible 18 months

EXHAUST

The `wow' factor

When I think back about the past 18 months with Harley-Davidson®, so many words pop into my brain. However, `wow' probably best summarises my experiences thus far!
I'll be totally honest: until the spring of 2012 I was not only a complete Harley® virgin, but a total motorbike novice in all respects. I'd always marvelled at the beauty of Harley-Davidsons (who doesn't), but to be quite frank they scared me. That was then and this is now, nine events later; I'm 110% hooked.
I'm lucky enough to work within the central Customer Experience Team based in Oxford. We eat, sleep and breathe H.O.G.® every day. The beauty of our job is that it's so very varied, no two days are ever the same. One moment I can be in a corporate planning meeting, working on the future of H.O.G., while the next day will be spent riding on the most wonderful roads, stopping only for a bite to eat and a natter with the locals in tiny villages no one has heard of. What could be better than that?
It's experiences like these that have fuelled the passion in my belly for H.O.G. and Harley-Davidson. My friends and family all think that I have the best job in the world, and although I may be slightly biased I do tend to agree!
I feel honoured and privileged when I speak about what the company has accomplished within the last year, and

very excited when I think about what is yet to come.
H.O.G. is undoubtedly expanding and changing; we're immensely proud of the first 30 years of H.O.G. and what we've achieved, but we have so so much more to give. The next couple of years are definitely going to be a rollercoaster. We're building bridges to ensure that H.O.G. and riding really is an experience that everyone can be involved with. Our ever-expanding platforms and recent reveal of the new Harley-Davidson StreetTM in Milan showcases how Harley-Davidson as a brand is constantly evolving; that's not to say, though, that we're ever going to lose sight of our heritage.
As a young female who entered the company with no riding experience and very little exposure to the brand I was extremely nervous about what to expect. But within just a couple of weeks, I began to experience for myself just what it is about H.O.G. that makes people smile. This knowledge and experience was not gained from textbooks, or from reading reams of company literature. This was based on real-life exposure to the world of H.O.G. and Harley-Davidson. I was lucky enough to attend my first H.O.G. rally within a couple of months of being at Harley, and this is without a doubt a memory that will stick in my mind for the rest of my life. For those of you who attended the 2012 European H.O.G. Rally

in Cascais, Portugal you'll know what I'm talking about! Never in my life had I seen so many bikers what a fantastic few days. I rode in my first parade, and at times genuinely thought I was involved in an out-of-body experience. What a surreal but incredible feeling it was.
In Cascais I met countless H.O.G. members from all over the globe, who no matter their age, nationality or gender all had one thing in common to ride and have fun. Nine rallies later and the relationship that our members have with each other and their passion to ride still manages to astound me; it's something that I never want to take for granted.
It's moments like these that make our work within customer experience so worthwhile. But as I mentioned earlier, we are expanding and growing. Customer experience is now made up of a team of 10, with every one of us striving to improve the opportunities for our customers. With the Rider Training Academy now up and running in China and Authorized Tours & Rentals continuing to grow, we're confident that there is something out there for everyone.
I'd like to take this opportunity to personally thank each and every single one of you for making us the largest, most successful motorcycle club in the world; this is no mean feat. Roll on 2014, we've got so much more fun to have, and I personally can't wait! n
