5 LEADER GUIDE

Level Up
WHAT IS LEVEL UP?
Level Up means to aim higher, to grow stronger, and to build confidence. Preschoolers are often challenged to reach for the next level in team sports, creative hobbies, and recreation. Imagine the possibilities of who preschoolers could become when they are challenged to begin understanding answers to key questions of faith, beginning to cultivate strength and courage that lasts for eternity.
WHY LEVEL UP?
As preschoolers understand more about Jesus, they learn to respond to the hope that is within them while moving towards the next level of spiritual growth. (1 Peter 3:15) Throughout this study, TeamKIDs will learn answers to valuable questions of faith, community, and culture like how they can know truth, who Jesus is, and how we can tell others about our faith. TeamKID: Level Up! leads preschoolers to explore key faith questions to help them to move to new levels of spiritual understanding.
HOW DID YOU DEVELOP THE CONTENT FOR TEAMKID: LEVEL UP?
Preschool TeamKID: Level Up is designed as the next level of discipleship for preschoolers. The content was developed to be complementary to the TeamKID: Level Up for children in grades 1-6.
The 36 meetings of TeamKID: Level Up lead preschoolers to know more about key answers to questions about the Christian faith.

12LEADER GUIDE

Preschool TeamKID: Level Up

WARM-UP (5-10 MINUTES)

PROVIDE: Paper plates (1 per preschooler) Markers Large craft sticks (1 per preschooler) Heavy tape
· Welcome boys and girls to TeamKID. Distribute paper plates and markers to preschoolers. Guide them to draw a happy face on one side of the plate and a "troubled" face on the other side. Mention that when we are troubled we may look worried, scared, or sad. Tape a craft stick to the bottom center portion of the plate. Prompt preschoolers to use the stick as a handle.
· Ask: "Have you ever been troubled, worried, scared, or sad? What made you feel better?" Say: "Today, we are going to learn about a time when Jesus told His helpers, the disciples, not to be troubled."
· Clean up the craft supplies. Invite preschoolers to move to the Workout area.
WORKOUT (15-20 MINUTES)

PROVIDE: Bible Activity Books (1 per preschooler) Pencils

Tell the Bible story. Gather preschoolers on the floor. Say: "Over the next several TeamKID meetings, we are going to learn about how we can know what is true." Ask preschoolers to share what they think "truth" means. Explain that truth is what is real and right.

Open your Bible to John 14. Hold the Bible open on your lap and tell the Bible story in your own words.

JESUS IS THE TRUTH BASED ON JOHN 14:6-11; JOHN 15:1-17

Jesus knew that soon He would no longer be with His disciples. The time was coming for Jesus to die on the cross.
"Do not be troubled or upset. Keep believing and trusting God and Me. I will be returning to where My Father is. I will prepare a place for you there. I will come again and take you with Me to live in the place I prepare. You will be with Me then. You know the way to where I am going."
Thomas asked, "Since we don't know where you are going, how can we know the way?"
"I am the way, the truth, and the life," Jesus said. "No one comes to the

Preschool TeamKID: Level Up

13 LEADER GUIDE

Father except by believing in Me. If you know Me, you know God the Father. You know Him and have seen Him because you have seen Me."
Jesus explained more to His disciples. "I am the true one. I am like a vine and My Father is the gardener, the one who takes care of everything. Those who follow Me are like branches on the vine. They will know and understand the truth because I am with them. People will know you are My followers by what they see in your life.
"As God the Father loves Me, I love you. Keep loving others as I have loved you. If you remember and do the things I have told you, then you will show you are in My love. Love one another. The greatest love is when you give your life for your friends. You are My friends. You did not choose Me; I chose you. Go and do what I have taught you to do. And always remember: Love one another."
Review the Bible story. · Invite preschoolers to use their paper plate masks, made during Warm-Up, to
respond to statements from the Bible story. Guide them to hold up the "troubled" expression if they are unsure whether the statement is true. Hold up the happy face if the statement is true.
1. Jesus knew that He would soon die on the cross and no longer be with His disciples. (true)
2. Jesus told His disciples not to be troubled or upset. (true) 3. Jesus said that He is not the way, the truth, and the life. (false) 4. Jesus told the disciples to keep loving others. (true) · Remind preschoolers that Jesus is Truth, and truth never changes. Jesus always spoke the truth.
Apply Bible learning. · Play a simple true or false game. Invite a volunteer to stand in front of the group.
Make statements related to the volunteer. Statements could relate to the color of clothing the child is wearing, the child's name, and something he enjoys doing. Ask the group to decide if the statement is true or false. Prompt the volunteer to reveal the correct answer to each statement. Mention that people can make true or false statements. Say: "Everything the Bible says about Jesus is true. Jesus is Truth."
Expand the session. · Distribute an activity book to each child. Lead preschoolers to complete this
week's activities in their activity books.
· Guide preschoolers to trace the heart shape around each picture of Jesus and the circle around each Bible picture. Mention that Jesus said to love others. The words Jesus spoke can be found in the Bible.
· If time permits, allow preschoolers to complete side 2 of their activity books or encourage preschoolers to complete side 2 with their families at home.
Pray. · Thank God for His Son, Jesus. Ask God to help preschoolers as they learn about
truth.

STRETCH IT OUT (20-25 MINUTES)

PROVIDE: Activity 1: Item 22: "Word
Cards," tape, letter stamps, stamp pad (washable ink) blank paper, dry erase board or chalkboard, dry erase marker or chalk, eraser, magnetic letters metal cookie sheet Activity 2: Item 23: "Right or Wrong Matching Cards"

TO DO: Activity 1: Print "Word Cards." Set up
3 writing stations. Post a set of "Word Cards" at each station. Activity 2: Print a set of "Right or Wrong Matching Cards" (1 set for every 3 children). Hide 1 set of cards around the room at a preschooler's eye level.

Note: Before the meeting, set up three stations around the room, a stamp station, a writing station, and a spelling station. Place appropriate materials at each station and allow preschoolers to spell the word Jesus and the word truth at each station. Enlist coaches to assist preschoolers at each station as needed.

These activities will reinforce today's Bible skills. Before the meeting collect the materials and supplies needed for each. Assign a coach to lead each activity.
SPELL AROUND THE ROOM · Say: "Today we learned that Jesus is Truth. We are going to move around the
room and practice spelling the name Jesus and the word truth.
· Open your Bible to John 1:17b. Read the Bible verse phrase, "Grace and truth came through Jesus Christ." Repeat the verse a couple of times. Prompt preschoolers to give a thumbs-up when they hear the name of Jesus or the word truth.
· Form three small groups. Prompt each group to move around the room to each spelling station. Demonstrate what preschoolers need to do when arriving at a station. One station could be stamping the words using letter stamps, a stamp pad, and blank paper. Another could be looking at the words and writing them on a dry erase board or chalkboard. For younger preschoolers, help them make a J for Jesus and a T for truth. A third station could be spelling the words using magnetic letters on a metal cookie sheet. Guide preschoolers to look at the "Word Cards" posted at each station to practice spelling each word.

SEARCH AND MATCH · Help preschoolers learn today's Bible skill (the Bible teaches right and wrong) by
conducting a scavenger hunt and playing a matching game with the cards found.
· Prompt preschoolers to find the cards hidden around the room and bring them to a central location. When all the cards are found, match each action illustrated on the cards. Talk about whether each action shows a right or wrong choice. Mention that the Bible teaches us what is right and wrong.
· Mix up the cards, flip them over, and play a matching game. If the group is large, provide a set of cards for each group of three preschoolers.

REACH OUT (10-15 MINUTES)

PROVIDE: Item 24: People Patterns Crayons Poster board or dry erase board Marker Tape

TO DO: Cue the "All About St. Louis" video. Print the patterns and cut out 1 person
for each preschooler in your group.

· Say: "Some people in the United States don't know that Jesus is Truth. They have probably heard about Jesus, but they don't know the truth about Him. St. Louis is a city in the state of Missouri where missionaries are choosing to go to tell about Jesus. It's here in the United States."
· Cue the missions video. After the video say: "When missionaries talk about planting a church, they mean that they are starting a church. Let's see how a church might start."
· Distribute the people patterns and invite preschoolers to color them. (If time is limited, copy the patterns on colored paper instead and cut them out to represent people before the meeting.)
· Draw a simple line drawing of a house on a piece of poster board or a dry erase board.
· Read the following statements aloud, asking a few preschoolers to tape their people inside the drawing of the house after each statement. Read:
1. A missionary prays to God and asks for help to start a church. (Add one paper person.)
2. The missionary invites a few friends to study the Bible and worship together. Sometimes they will meet in a home or even in a restaurant. (Add one or two more people.)
3. Those friends invite a few more people to join them. (Add more people.) 4. As more people worship together and as more people trust that Jesus is the
only truth, the group grows. Sometimes they will find a building to meet in, but sometimes they will stay in a home. (Allow remaining preschoolers to add their paper people the picture.) · Now they are doing what the Bible teaches a church to do! Maybe one day God will ask one of you to start a new church. Pray for the church leaders in St. Louis.

· Debrief: We learn about Jesus in the Bible. We can find truth in the Bible. Every word in the Bible is true. The Bible tells us exactly what we need to know about God and His Son, Jesus. It also tells us the truth on how we should live. God also shows us the truth of who He is in creation.
2. FOUR CORNERS (PLAYBOOK PAGE 7) · Post a different color of paper on the wall in each of the four corners of the room.
Play music while preschoolers walk around the room. Instruct them to do a different movement each time they walk. Stop the music and prompt them to find a corner of the room. Draw a scrap of paper representing one of the four colors. The group standing next to the color selected will receive a "Jesus Picture Card." (Item 25) Continue to play so preschoolers can collect cards.
· Debrief: Ask: "Who is Jesus?" Respond: "Jesus is God's Son. The words Jesus said were always truthful, real, and right. We can find Jesus' words in the Bible. Jesus is Truth."
3. PASS THE ACTION (PLAYBOOK PAGE 8) · Invite preschoolers to sit in a circle. Talk about ways to show love and kindness
to others. Examples could include: a smile, a handshake, a pat on the back, a hug, inviting someone to sit by you, being kind, sharing toys, speaking nice words. Play upbeat music. Select a volunteer to do an action that shows love and kindness to the child sitting next to him. The action will move around the circle from one child to another. After it moves around the circle, prompt another volunteer to select an action to move around the circle. Continue as time allows.
· Debrief: Jesus told His disciples to love one another. Invite volunteers to tell about a time when someone showed love and kindness to them. Mention that we all need friends, and we all need to feel loved.

PROVIDE: Beach ball
· Welcome boys and girls to TeamKID. Guide preschoolers to sit in a circle. Gently roll a beach ball back and forth in the circle. When rolling it, call on each child to take turns naming something God made. Ask: "What are some things God made on the beach? In the sky? In your back yard?"
· Say: "Many people play with beach balls on a beach. Did you know that God made the sand on the beach, the ocean, and everything living in the ocean? What God made is called creation."
· Say: "Today, we are continuing to learn about how we can know what is true. Everything in the Bible is true. We can find truth in Jesus, the Bible, and in God's creation. God teaches us about Himself in creation."
· Lead preschoolers to the Workout area. Play worship music in the background.
WORKOUT (15-20 MINUTES)

PROVIDE: Bible Item 26: "Creation Listening Cards" Pencils or crayons Activity Books (1 per preschooler) Magnifying glass Nature items (a flower, a pine cone, a leaf) Item 7: "Allergy Alert"

TO DO: Print and cut apart the
"Creation Listening Cards." Provide 1 for each preschooler. Post the allergy alert listing nature items the preschoolers will be touching.

Tell the Bible story. Gather preschoolers in a circle on the floor. Give each child a "Creation Listening Card" and a pencil or crayon. Say: "When you hear something from the Bible story describing one of the pictures on your card, circle the picture."

Open your Bible to Psalm 19. Hold the Bible open on your lap and tell the Bible story in your own words.

CREATION DECLARES GOD'S GLORY BASED ON PSALM 19

People learn about God from His creation. All the skies declare God's glory. The universe proclaims the work of God. Every day speaks of God, and every night helps people know more about God. No words are heard or spoken aloud but the message is still clear. The sun shows God's glory. God created a place for the sun above the earth. Each day the sun moves

through the sky like an athlete running his course. All nature teaches about God. The Scriptures are God's Words of
instruction. As a person learns about God, he becomes wise. He understands more about how to live and learns what is important. Knowing God and His glory directs people in how to live.
God will forgive people from their sins. They will praise God and think about Him. God is the Redeemer.
Review the Bible story. · Review by asking preschoolers to identify the pictures on the "Creation Listening
Card." Ask: "How can we learn about God by looking at the sky, sun, stars, and nature?"
· Comment that people learn about God from His creation. Only God could make the beautiful world where we live. Mention that the Bible says that we become wise when we learn about God. Learning about God helps us understand how to live and learn what is important.
Apply Bible learning. · Say: "God teaches us about Himself in creation." Invite preschoolers to name
and describe what they see in nature. Talk about how these things in nature help us learn more about God. Ask what preschoolers like about what God made in these items. Explain to preschoolers that God cares about every part of His creation. He is in control over everything, and we can trust Him.
Expand the session. · Distribute an activity book to each child. Lead preschoolers to complete this
week's activities in their activity books.
· Guide preschoolers to match the nature item to its shadow. Together, identify each nature picture on the page. Say: "God created the sun. The sun shows God's glory. It casts shadows on nature items made by God. God created a place for the sun above the earth. All nature teaches us about God.
· If time permits, allow preschoolers to complete side 2 of their activity books or encourage preschoolers to complete side 2 with their families at home.
Pray. · Lead the children in a prayer. Thank God for revealing Himself through the
beautiful world He created.
STRETCH IT OUT (20-25 MINUTES)
PROVIDE: Activity 1: Nature pictures, scissors, ziplock bags (1 bag per 2 preschoolers) Activity 2: Blank index cards, nature stickers, pictures of nature items (if doing
an indoor walk), tape
These activities will reinforce today's Bible skills. Before the meeting collect the materials and supplies needed for each. Assign a coach to lead each activity.

NATURE PUZZLES · Remind preschoolers that God teaches us about Himself through creation. Ask:
"What did God create?" Prompt them to name things in nature, animals, and people they know.
· Pair up the preschoolers. Let each pair look through nature pictures and pick a favorite picture. If the group is large, select the pictures prior to the session and cut them into puzzles without giving preschoolers an option to select them. Cut the picture into several pieces, mix up the pieces, and place them on a table. Challenge groups of preschoolers to work the puzzle together and describe the picture they see. Ask: "Does this puzzle show something created by God?" As time allows, tell each pair to put the puzzle pieces in a ziplock bag and exchange puzzles with another pair.
TAKE A NATURE WALK · Give each child a blank index card and a sheet of nature stickers. Plan to take
either an outdoor or indoor nature walk. If doing the walk indoors, tape pictures of nature items, animals, and people in different locations along the planned path. If walking outside, secure enough adult supervision to keep preschoolers together and safe. Check with parents ahead of time to see if any preschoolers have allergies to plants around your outdoor area.
· Say: "As we walk, look around and find what God created. When you see something or someone created by God, add a sticker to your card." At the conclusion of the walk, prompt preschoolers to count the number of stickers on their cards. Together, practice saying the Bible Truth, "God teaches us about Himself in creation."
REACH OUT (10-15 MINUTES)

PROVIDE: Item 27: "St. Louis Photos"

TO DO: Display the photos.

· Consider reviewing the missions video, "All About St. Louis," from Meeting 1 to remind preschoolers that you are learning about missions in St. Louis.

· Show the St. Louis photos and explain that this is a big city. Ask preschoolers what they see in the photos.

· Ask preschoolers to find something in the room that matches the color of things in creation that people in big cities might see. Call out each item in this list, then invite preschoolers to move about the room:
1. Water (Stand next to something blue.) 2. Grass (Stand next to something green.) 3. Stars (Stand next to something yellow.) 4. Clouds (Stand next to something white.) 5. Flowers (Stand next to a bright color.)

· Say: "Even though we see a lot of buildings in big cities, people also see things that God created. Missionaries are there to tell people about God."

· Pray that the people in St. Louis will see things that God created and want to know Him.

· Lead preschoolers to hop to Tournament.

1. FILL THE SKY (PLAYBOOK PAGE 9) · Provide a small bottle of water for each child to drink. Mention that God made
water. Draw a star on the top of each bottle cap. If the group is small, provide additional bottle caps with a star picture on each. Collect the bottle caps in a basket. Tape a start line on the floor. Place the black poster board on the floor several feet from the start line. Prompt preschoolers to line up behind the taped line. Point out that the poster board looks dark like the night sky. Guide boys and girls to take turns tossing the "stars" onto the "night sky."
· Debrief: The night helps us learn more about God, and the sun shows God's glory. Ask: "What can you remember is true about God during the nighttime?"
2. RUN A SUNNY RELAY (PLAYBOOK PAGE 10) · For each group of four to five preschoolers, cut a circle out of yellow construction
paper. Cut ten strips of paper from yellow or orange construction paper to represent the sun's rays. Place a set of paper strips in a basket for each team. Set the circles, spaced several feet apart, at one end of the room. Tape a start line at the opposite end of the room.
· Line each group up behind the taped line. The first player in line will run to the round circle at the opposite end of the room and add a ray to the sun. When the first player returns, announce a different way, such as skipping, hopping, crawling, for the next player to move to the other end of the room to add a ray. Continue playing until each player has at least two turns.
· Debrief: Remind preschoolers that God created a place for the sun above the earth. Read Psalm 19:6 and remind preschoolers that the Bible says that the sun shows God's glory. Help preschoolers understand that we can learn about what is true about God by learning about His creation.
3. UNIT 1 GAME: TELL THE TRUTH (PLAYBOOK PAGE 6) · Hold a Bible and talk about how everything in the Bible is true. Mention that the
