Adding Start-Up Chemicals
Water Chemistry Guidelines
Spa water chemistry is the owner's responsibility. Improper chemistry can lead to costly repairs not covered by warranty. Contact Customer Care Associate at (888) 961-7727 Ext. 8440 if unsure.
Identify minerals in local source water for better treatment understanding. Follow these steps:
- Establish Proper pH Level: Recommended range is 7.2-7.8. Above 7.8, water is too alkaline (cloudy water, scale). Below 7.0, water is too acidic (damage to heating system). Use pH Down/Decreaser (sodium bisulfate) to lower pH, or pH Up/Increaser (sodium hydrogen carbonate) to raise pH. Add one teaspoon at a time, wait 30 minutes between applications and re-measuring.
- Measure Total Alkalinity: TA (bicarbonates, carbonates, hydroxides) is important for pH control. Ideal range: 40-120 ppm. Use Alkalinity Down/Decreaser (sodium bisulfate) to reduce TA, or Alkalinity Up/Increaser (sodium bicarbonate/hydrogen carbonate) to increase. Add in small amounts (teaspoon), wait 30 minutes before re-measuring.
- Determine Calcium Hardness: Recommended range: 75-150 ppm. Add calcium hardness to increase ppm if too soft. If too hard, use a mix of hard/soft water or add stain and scale control. A test kit is essential.
- Sanitizing: Use Chlorine (sodium dichlor). Add 2 teaspoons, increase as needed to reach 3-5 ppm. Maintain weekly. Granulated sodium dichlor is recommended; granular bromine may also be used. Never use compressed sanitizers. Introduce sanitizer with jets running for at least 10 minutes.
Weekly Shock
Use potassium monopersulfate (MPS) shock. Add ~2 oz. (60 ml) into the filter bucket while jets run. Leave cover off and jets on for 10 minutes. Then shut off jets and replace cover.
Spa Maintenance
Filter Cartridge Maintenance
Clean monthly to remove debris. Use household water pressure and a hose. Never run spa without a filter cartridge (voids warranty). Replace cartridges every 6-8 months or when needed. Dirty filters can cause pump burnout and void warranty.
