This document provides comprehensive instructions for operating and maintaining the Nespresso AGUILA 220 espresso coffee machine.
Machine Overview
The Nespresso AGUILA 220 is a professional-grade espresso machine designed for commercial use. Key components include:
- Capsule insertion slots

Operating Overview
The machine offers various beverage options, including Ristretto, Espresso, Lungo, Espresso Macchiato, Cappuccino, Latte Macchiato, and Iced Macchiato. It also features hot milk and milk foam preparation.
Beverage Selection: To view the product name on the display, press and hold a product button for 5 seconds. The display will revert after 10 seconds of inactivity.
Cup Recommendations:
- Espresso: Espresso cup
- Lungo: Lungo cup
- Cappuccino: Cappuccino cup
- Large drinks: 300 ml, 350-400 ml, or 500 ml take-away cups
General Information and Safety Warnings
General Notes:
- Ensure the machine is installed according to applicable plumbing codes.
- The machine is for indoor use only.
- Maintain an ambient temperature between 16°C and 32°C.
- Position the machine on a flat, horizontal, stable, and heat-resistant surface.
- Ensure adequate ventilation by leaving a gap of at least 50 mm in front of air vents.
- Store the machine in a dust-free, dry environment at temperatures above 0°C.
- The top of the machine must be at least 1.5 m above the floor.
- Keep the machine at least 20 cm away from users.
- Use only Thermoplan cleaning accessories.
- Never use the machine without the drip grid.
- Do not store explosive substances inside the appliance.
- Never use the cup heater for drying wet cups.
- Always place cups upside-down on the cup heater for optimal heat transmission.
Safety Warnings:
- Risk of scalding: Contact with hot fluids can cause injury. Do not handle underneath the product outlet. Avoid direct contact with hot fluids.
- Risk of bruising: Handling inside the machine can cause injury. Do not put fingers into capsule insertion slots. Switch off the machine before attempting to remove a blocked capsule.
- Risk of electric shock: Contact with electrical components can be fatal. Do not open the casing. Keep the machine away from moisture. Never immerse the machine, cable, or plug in water. Immediately stop use if the cable or plug is damaged. Do not position the machine or cable near hot parts or open flames. Protect the cable from sharp edges. Have the machine serviced by authorized personnel only. Keep the machine and its supply cables out of reach of children.
- Risk of food intoxication: Ingestion of contaminated food can cause serious injury or death. Use only food with an unexpired sell-by date. Store food properly. Clean the machine regularly. Use only heat-treated milk (pasteurized or UHT). Observe hygiene standards when handling milk. Use only cold milk (below 5°C). Use opened milk containers within 24 hours.
Safety Signs: The manual uses various safety signs including warning triangles for risks to users or the machine, and specific warnings for scalding, electric shock, bruising, and food intoxication.
Working Area: Maintain a clean, tidy, hygienic, and well-lit workspace with sufficient space.
First Use
- Switch on the main water supply.
- Turn on the main switch located underneath the machine.
- Close both levers.
- Press any button to start the machine.
- The machine performs a cold start rinse (up to 10 minutes). During rinsing, the noise level increases.
- The machine heats up, and all buttons flash in white. Once heated, all buttons will be permanently lit in white.
- Open both levers.
- Clean the milk container, cover, and milk suction tube with appropriate cleaning materials (foodsafe cleaner, single-use disposable tissue/paper towel).
- Ensure milk is kept cold (below 5°C) and changed every 24 hours.
- Insert the milk suction tube into the milk container.
Energy Saving Mode
The machine enters energy saving mode after 30 minutes of non-use. In this mode, buttons appear white, and boiler heating is reduced, while the fridge remains active. Pressing any button returns the machine to operating mode.
Maximum Energy Saving Mode: After four hours of non-use, the machine switches to maximum energy saving mode, with boiler heating switched off. Pressing the energy saving button restarts the machine.
Coffee Preparation
- Pull down the drip grid for small cups if needed.
- Insert a Nespresso coffee capsule.
- Pull down the lever to the lowest position.
- Choose the desired cup size (e.g., Espresso).
- Press the corresponding beverage button (e.g., ESPRESSO). The product name is displayed during preparation.
- Coffee preparation begins.
- To stop or top up the beverage, press the product button again within 1 minute of completion.
- Pulling up the lever ejects the used capsule.
- The machine is ready for the next beverage.
Note: Coffee heads can be used simultaneously to prepare coffee.
Milk-Based Coffee Recipes
To prepare milk-based coffee recipes, place your cup under the right-hand side outlet.
- Insert a coffee capsule.
- Pull down the lever to the lowest position.
- Choose the desired milk-based coffee recipe (e.g., Cappuccino).
- The machine starts coffee preparation.
- Milk foaming preparation occurs according to the selected product.
- Pulling up the lever ejects the used capsule.
Milk System Rinsing: The milk system is rinsed automatically to maintain hygiene. An internal rinse occurs after each milk-based beverage, and an external rinse occurs 5 minutes after the last milk-based beverage.
Caution: Avoid direct contact with hot water during rinsing.
Milk Preparation
Options include hot milk foam, hot milk, and cold milk foam. Place your cup under the right-hand side outlet for milk preparations.
Milk System Rinsing: Similar to milk-based coffee recipes, the milk system undergoes automatic rinsing.

Hot Water Preparation
Place your cup under the left-hand side outlet for hot water preparation.
Caution: Avoid direct contact with hot water.
Daily Cleaning
(Duration: approx. 30 minutes)
Daily cleaning is mandatory for hygiene, taste, and machine longevity. The display will show a reminder 2 hours before cleaning is required.
- Empty the capsule drawer.
- Press the cleaning button for 3 seconds to start the cleaning process.
- Empty the capsule container daily or when prompted.
- External Cleaning: Use a damp cloth or sponge with a mild soap solution. Wring out thoroughly. Use only mild detergents and non-scratch cloths. Pay attention to dispensing parts, display, and keyboard.
- Internal Cleaning:
- Carefully remove and drain the milk container.
- Wipe the milk suction tube with a single-use disposable tissue or paper towel.
- Place the empty container back into the refrigerator and guide the suction tube into it.
- Remove the cleaning key and insert two Thermoplan cleaning tablets.
- The cleaning process starts automatically.
- After cleaning, wipe the milk suction tube again.
- Empty remaining water, clean the milk container, and place it back in the refrigerator.
- Remove and clean the black plastic tray.
- Follow the reverse steps to reassemble the drip tray.
Cleaning Solutions: Use only Thermoplan milk cleaning tablets for automatic cleaning.
Caution: Risk of corrosive injury from cleaning detergent. Wear gloves/goggles.
Menu Settings
The machine offers various menu settings:
- Language Setting: Access via USER MENU > GENERAL SETTINGS > Language. Select desired language (e.g., English).
- Statistics: Access via USER MENU > STATISTICS. View user product counter, products total, capsule counter, and reset user counter.
- Milk Parameters: Access via USER MENU > MILK PARAMETERS. Adjust milk foam settings (hot foam percentage for fluidity) and refrigerator cooling temperature.
- Cup Heater: Access via USER MENU > MACHINE PARAMETERS > Cup heater. Turn the cup heater on or off.
- AGUILA+ Button Programming: Allows selection of one-touch milk-based coffee recipes. Access via USER MENU > GENERAL SETTINGS > AGUILA+. Select the desired recipe.
Alarms / Notifications
The machine provides various display messages and LED status indicators for different situations:
- Change water filter / Service required: Contact Nespresso representative.
- Milk container empty / Milk level low: Fill up the milk container.
- Automatic rinsing mode: The milk system rinses automatically. The machine may lock if cleaning is not performed after the timer ends.
- Cleaning required: Start the cleaning procedure as described on page 14.
- Milk temperature high / Milk temperature too high: Replace milk with cold milk. Milk products may be affected.
- Open lever: Lift the lever to eject the used capsule.
- Preparation time too long / too short: Ensure water supply is on. If the issue persists, contact Nespresso representative.
- Heating up boiler: Slow flashing indicates heating. If it persists for over 30 minutes, contact Nespresso representative.
- Energy saving mode: Machine is in energy saving mode. Press any button to reactivate.
- Maximum energy saving mode: Machine is in maximum energy saving mode. Press the energy saving button to restart.
- Brewing unit end of life: Immediately contact Nespresso representative.
- CCI not connected: Check CCI connection. If the alarm persists, contact Nespresso representative.

Type Plate
The type plate, located beneath the capsule container, contains machine details such as model (AGUILA, AG220PRO), voltage, power, water pressure, refrigerant type, class, refrigerant charge, and serial number.
