FROM THE EDITORS
Allen Watson The Record
This is the last issue of the Multi-Tasker that I will co-edit with Dominic DiNollo; as of January. Dom will be taking over the editorship solo. I have enjoyed bein~ able to contribute to the RSX SIG in this way. but I have to admit I won't miss the monthly deadlines.
As I have said before. in July. 1983 we received two VAX ll/780's. and since that time the majority of my time has been spent on VAX systems instead of RSX. In fact. for the last six months I have not had an RSX system available to me without major difficulty. and I've almost forgotten what PIP switches are or why people groan about the Task Builder. So it doesn't really make sense for me to continue editing this newsletter.
One of the major things I miss about RSX is the opportunity it offers to let you look under the hood and tinker with the engine. VMS is wonderful. I really like it. but I don't have the same feeling of close familiarity with it that I had with RSX. Half of the fun things I did in years gone by were stuff like finding new and strange ways to increase pool. setting up CCL interfaces for my users. and so on.
On the other hand. with VMS most of the reasons for doing that sort of thing are gone as well. I certainly don't miss the long nights of labor trying to get foreign controllers and boot proms to work again after a new SYSGEN. It made great war stories. but who really likes a war?
I still plan to receive the Multi-Tasker and the RSX tapes: after all. a lot of that stuff works on VAXs too. I am a heavy user of Bonner Lab Runoff in preference to DSR on the VAX. for example. So from time to time I may contribute an article even though I don't run RSX anymore. I have the Cincinatti tape on its way to me right now and plan to at least put together a summary of what's on it for an upcoming issue. For others like myself who are VAX users. you might be interested to know that all the RSX tapes from 1977 onward are now in the DECUS library in VMS BACKUP format.
The joint editorship between Dominic and me worked out well. and I recommend it as a good alternative when one person finds the job to be too much. It depended. in our case. on the fact that we live only 25 miles apart and were able to get together once a month to "put the issue to bed". I am certain that the Multi-Tasker will continue to thrive under Dom's leadership: we shared an eaual

concern that ouality material continue to be published for RSX users.
As a partin~ shot: lots of people have contributed to the Multi-Tasker this past year. and I want to thank them all for their fine efforts. But it has to keep on happenin~. The last two or three months have been pretty lean. and we have had to ask for material from people who are already heavily loaded down. You may not be able to write a five pa~e article. Maybe your idea can be expressed in half a pa~e. But a half-pa~e idea can be as valuable as a long article in many cases. So send it.
If you have a problem you haven't been able to solve. send it along too. Questions from readers generate answers from many readers, so your little contribution provokes lots of contributions and we need that. Look at all the fun we had from Roger Jenkins's question about how to put a double quote in an Indirect symbol! Perhaps you think your question is trivial or stupid, but it isn't. My favorite question is one I know the answer to. It makes me feel smart. and I know others like me are out there waiting to answer just about anything you can ask.
CONTRIBUTING MATERIAL TO THE MULTI-TASKER
Please send all contributions for the Multi-Tasker to: Dominic DiNollo Loral Electronic Systems Engineering Computer Center Ridge Hill Yonkers, New York 10710
Contributions must be in machine-readable format on either mag tape or floppy disk. Acceptable formats are: RSX BRU, VMS BACKUP, PIP, or FLX. 1600 BPI tapes preferred. PR0/350 floppies are also acceptable.
I do not know if I will be able to keep the dial-in account for the Multi-Tasker alive on my VAX after I am no longer editor. I will try to do so as long as I can. Dom can dial my VAX and transfer files over to his machine. If you want to submit an article by dial-up, please call me, Allen Watson, for the appropriate login passwords and telephone number. My phone number is (201)-646-4111. Kermit is available on the VAX for file transfers.

Bonner lab Runoff, SRO, etc. on old versions of RSX. An article was sent to the Multi-tasker in regard to using BRU with MT: tape drives. Bill Burton will be unable to attend the fall symposium but Jeff Hamilton will chair the unsupported versions working group session.
The System Performance and Accounting working group is continuing its work in preparing the index of the past RSXSIG tapes in regards to System performance and accounting. There is much interest in continuing the development of performance measuring tools. Further contact with DEC in regards.to the working groups goals is being pursued. An article is being prepared for the multitasker. Further work is being done in the area of consolidating the working group's division of labor. A search of all the past SIG tapes is being done inregards to the software analysis.
In regards to the DECUS library working group, a restructoring of the tree for distribution of the DECUS library tape has been done. The people on the tree are being used in the evaluation of a sample 2400' 800 bpi tape that will be submitted to the DECUS library. The tape was sent to the volunteers the Friday before the Spring Symposium. Evaluation is being done on the tape at this time. A couple of responses have been returned. A lot of the tree evaluation team have failed to return the tape with their evaluation and some have even disappeared with their tapes. Bruce requests those he has not been able to get in touch with to please help him by either returning their tapes or finishing their evaluation.
The SIG Tape working group reports that the spring 84 tape has been distributed to the tree and responses of those individuals who received the tape have started to come in. The distribution tape has been submitted to the DECUS library. A 4 tape VMS hackup set of all the past RSX SIG tapes has been submitted to the DECUS library. Faster distribution of the RSXSIG tape is being planned.
The SRD working group has started making changes to SRO for Micro/RSX and POS (basically for named directories). Hopefully they will have the changes made by the next symposium. A minor bug fix is being worked up for the Fall symposium tape. The SIG data base is bein~ used in the evaluation of different SRD and SRO command file procedures. The SRD Workin~ ~roup has submitted a seperate article to this issue of the Multi-Tasker describin~ corrections for SRD V6.4.
The Real-time and Industrial Automation workin~ ~roup is workin~ on the pre-symposia seminar that they are sponsoring. They are also workin~ on a mailing about the role of the Real-time working ~roup versus the LABS SIG. Other work is being done in the are of volunteers and objectives. Anyone with ideas. su~~estions. or extra time and energy; please let Ed know.
The Cheap Networks working ~roup has continued in it's evaluation

of the current free software for networkin~ applications is the
group's first task. Further work in the area of layerin~ a mail
application on this software was discussed. An article is bein~ prepared for the Multitasker.
The formation of the computer aided instruction working ~roup still awaits the appointment of a workin~ group chairperson.
If you are interested in providing information to a special working group concerning problems or ideas in that area. please get in touch with the working group chairman of that group.

At this point the tape is completely full. We wanted to add CCL, a super command language enhancement, and SRO, a super file structure maintenance utility, and also FRAG (which shows how fragmented your disk is) and ENA which allows you to turn on privileges temporarily, and VS, the Variable Length Send/Receive driver. However. there's no more room. so these have been left off. The last SRO and CCL were on the RSX Fall 1983 SIG tape. in UICs [352,4] and [344,61] respectively. This tape is available from the OECUS library as number 11-SP-60 in either BRU or VMS Backup form. (The VMS Backup version is under a different number).
To read a tape in RMS Backup format you use RMS Restore.

6

RSX MULTITASKER
If you have VMS. define the command $RST:==MCR RST
and if you have RSX. install RMSRST via >INS $RMSRST/CKP=YES/TASK= ··· RST
Each backup set should be placed in a separate directory on output. To do so. set your default output to the directory you want the output to go into. and mount the tape as an ANSI volume (label is RSXSIG). Then ~ive the command:
RST *.*;*/FR=MT:name.BCK
where you may use MS: or MF: or MM: instead of MT: if you have a different type tape controller. The /FR switch forces UIC ownership to be yours. Without it. it will be the same as the source system. which will ~enerally mean that unless you are privile~ed enou~h (and have exouota set on VMS) you will ~et error messages as BCK tries to close the files.
RMS BCK was used because it is the only utility readily available to RSX. VMS. and RSTS sites which uses fairly lar~e tape blocks and preserves all file attributes. Also. it does not ~lobalize tape errors the way BRU does. so errors in input files tend to be much better localized than on BRU tapes. We want you to be able to use this tape when you ~et back to your systems.
You are ur~ed to obtain the last 2 RSX SIG tapes ( 11-SP-60 for Fall '83 BRU. and 11-SP-67 for Sprin~ 1984 BRU) from DECUS if you do not have them already. Both are available in VMS Backup format also unaer different catalog numbers; a call to DECUS will get you the numbers if you prefer VMS Backup format for reading the tapes on a VAX. Additional versions of RUNOFF, CCL. SRD. and the rest of the Kermit distribution. plus much much more. are on these volumes. They also include the LBL Tools. a complete Unix-like system that runs on RSX (or VMS or about 30 other OSs) with equivalents to nearly all the Unix utilities in source. with build files.
If you run RSX or VMS, in fact. the complete RSX SIG tape collection has many worthwhile offerin~s. even on the oldest of the tapes. Many of these even run in native mode under VMS. as they are written in compatible HOLs.

PLAY WITH SORT V3.0 FIRST
I recently installed the new SORT V3.0 packa~e on my M-PLUS V2.1 system (runnin~ with autopatch D). There were many nice new features which were appealing to my site. We tested it one weekend and it seems ok. Then we went live with it. Yuck!@ : it blew over half of our production jobs out of the water and created a bundle of headaches. The problems have been SPRed with a plea for Quick response. At this point, I would sug~est that the rest of you review its usage in your environment VERY CAREFULLY before migratin~ unconditionally. We tried to determine if the problems could be tied to certain file types. record lengths, etc. The problems seem to be inconsistent and we could not accurately define the nature of the problem in the timeframe we had.
In summary. SORT V3.0 looks very nice but some polish is needed.

User Command Linkage-Plus for the PR0-300 Series

new
PR0-12~

Version: V6J, July 1984
Author: William K. Walker, Monsanto Research Corp., Miamisburg, OH
Operating System: RT-11 VS.Al

Source Language: MACR0-11 Memory Required: 8872 Words

UCL+ is a user command linkaqe program for use with RT-11 VS.~l on the PR0-300 series computers. It allows dynamic, on-line definition of user commands (or ·symbols·) and is upward-compatible with the UCL program distributed with RT-11 vs.01. Among the extended features are:
1. An ·execute-immediate· mode for commands that are defined in
terms of other UCL+ commands. 2. Deletion of multiple symbol definitions in a single command
line. 3. Optional chaining to additional ·ucL·s·.
4. A user-definable ·run-by-name path· which extends the RT-11 ·run-from-SY:· default.
5. Provision to STORE/RECALL program settings to/from a separate·.ucL· file.
~. A PASS ON command that allows you to force UCL+ to ·pass-on· a given command string to the next ·ucL·in the chain (the default mode) or to a program that you specify.
7. DISPLAY of command expansions with or w.ithout execution. The DISPLAY command can also be used to output pre-defined ASCII strings to the console, the printer, or some other device/file (handy for sneaky escape sequences).
8. Several useful built-in ·hard-wired· commands including a DCL-style RNO command for use with the DECUS RUNOFF (DECUS No. PR0-104) program.
9. Provision for accepting lower-case input (as well as most control characters).
10. Provision to list all program parameters, including SYI,!lbol definitions; list output may be directed to devices/files other than the console.

The V~J distribution also includes the source text and instructions necessary to create an on-line HELP facility for UCL+.

PORTACALC: ~ 30 Spreadsheet/Database System

revision 11-SP-47

Version: Vl2.1, July 1984
Author: Glenn c. Everhart, Ph.D.

Operating System: IAS, RSTS/E, RSX-llD, HSX-llM, RSX-llM-PLUS, VAX/VMS
Source Language: FORTRAN IV-PLUS, FORTRAN 77, VAX-11 FORTRAN, MACR0-11, MACR0-32
PORTACALC is a powerful 3-dimensional spreadsheet/database and analysis system with easy user extensibility designed to outperform most any commercial package available, running on PDP-11 systems able to support the F4P compiler, or VAX systems, needing the VAX FORTRAN compiler to compile. Several terminals are supported, including the VTl~O series, VT52, Datamedia Colorscan lA and Elite lSAA, Televideo 925, and ANSI color terminals.

The program is designed for portability to other FORTRAN systems, with peculiarities used documented, and its manual is designed to be turned into a system HELP file so that it can be read online.
Tutorials are supplied as well. Recustomizing for other terminals
is easy; only direct cursor addressing, screen erase, and line erase are required, though reverse video allows use of the VTlOA templates which yield an easier-to-read screen.

A data management system interface is built in, permitting spreadsheets to access a potentially unlimited number of files and records or parts of records in those files for user defined functions, numbers, formulas, text or whatnot. In fact it has many of the attributes of a language. Every cell may contain far more complex formulas than most commercially sold programs, and indeed may be a complete program with the abilty to execute most command-level spreadsheet commands, though with minor restrictions.
Merging of multiple sheets, matrix algebra, general function solving (a la TK!SOLVER, though with a less polished user interface), and easy document load/unload make this spreadsheet very significantly more powerful than all but the most elaborate mainframe packages, and infinitely easier to customize. User commands may be entered via a keyword or function key and are provided with a comprehensive HELP system permitting users to individually tailor commands to their needs.
A powerful text integration function permits integration of word processing files with reports, permitting use of AnalytiCalc (PORTACALC) to integrate sections of reports which are edited with

26

any editor. It also simplifies inserting text from ex~ -~nal files flexibly over null cells of the spreadsheet. Note: VAX/VMS users, see DECUS NO. V-SP-24. Changes and Improvements: This version has better graphics interface and search-formula functions. Deleted some obsolete module versions. PR0-35A PortaCalc sources added. Restrictions: This version uses screen independent cursor control. PDP-11 version easily customized to almost anything. Release notes distributed with each tape. Documentation on magnetic media. PR0-1~1
BASIC, PASCAL, PortaCalc, Kermit and a Desk Top Calendar for the Professional - 35~
Version: V2, ~ugust 1984
Author: Various
Submitted By: Glenn c. Everhart, Ph.D.
Operating System: P/OS, RSX-llM-PLUS
Source Language: c, FORTRAN 77, MACR0-11
Other Software Required: PASCAL is not useful without the PRO Toolkit
These diskettes contain a grab bag of several RSX-11 tools off old RSX-11 SIG tapes, converted to RX5~ format for the DEC Professional-35A under P/OS Vl.7 or later (Maybe earlier too1 no way to test that).
The following are provided:
PortaCalc for Professional-350 is the most powerful spreadsheet available. This version is compatible with the VAX/Vt.1S version and does essentially everything you ever wanted your spreadsheet to do. The tutorial and manual file are supplied, and an install file is there too, in case you want to run it from a menu.
DTC for Professional-35A is a good desktop calendar facility for handling your calendar on the PRO. Full screen day/week/month/year displays, appointment selection, meeting scheduling, etc. etc.
RSX BASIC for the Professional-350 is the Michael Reese BASIC, a full language dialect similar to BASIC PLUS. This version starts up with a spurious error message, but works well.
SWEDISH PASCAL for the Professional-35A is the latest ·swedish PASCAL· compiler {updated for the new RSX versions) for the PRO. It is a full language compiler and OTS, plus the manual. This program is useful for those who have the PRO Toolkit so they can build programs in PASCAL now.
PRO Kermit Vl is a full featured communications package with host versions in the public domain available for practically any host or other Micro you ever heard of, and many you haven't. This package allows full VT102 emulation, file transfer, logging and much more and makes it totally unnecessary for you to buy anybody's communications packages. Includes the hexify and dehexify tools, making it possible to send even files with weird rms attributes around and rebuild the attributes.
31

There are install command files for BASIC, OTC, PortaCalc, and Kermit. The PASCAL kit is to be run from the PRO Toolkit, so is
not installable from a menu. The others can run under the PRO Toolkit too; it is not necessary to go through the menu, except maybe for Kermit, which is heavily into PRO menus.

Changes and Improvements: Cleaned up speedups for PortaCalc, BASIC. Added a couple of C tools.
Complete sources not included. Documentation on magnetic media.
