Inaddition,itisrecommendedthatyousynchronizethetimeonthehostsonwhichtheAppSpeedserverand

Deploying the AppSpeed Probes
Beforethemonitoringprocesscanbegin,youmustinstallatleastoneAppSpeedprobeononeormorehosts.
EachprobecanmonitoruptothreevSwitches.Youcaninstallmorethanoneprobeonthesamehostto
monitoradditionalvSwitches.Theprobesettings,includingthemanagementnetwork,storagedevice,and
monitoredvSwitches,areconfiguredaspartoftheprobeinstallationprocess.
Youcanaddandremoveprobes.See“InstallanAppSpeedProbe”onpage14and“DeleteProbes”onpage15.

Createsaprobebycreatingalinkedclone;Ifitisnotsuccessful,AppSpeedcreatesanewvirtualmachine
andcopiesit.Thevirtualmachineoftheprobehastheappropriatehardwaresettings,includingCPUand
memoryreservation.
ReconfigurestheprobeʹsclustersothattheprobeisnotsubjecttotheDistributedResourceScheduler(DRS)
andHighAvailability(HA).

Install an AppSpeed Probe
Youcaninstallaprobeononehostatatime,oryoucaninstallaprobeonmultiplehostsatthesametime.
Youcanalsoinstallmorethanoneprobeonthesamehost.
To install a probe
1AccesstheAppSpeeduserinterface:
aInthevSphereClient,clickHome>SolutionsandApplicationsandclicktheAppSpeedicon.
bIntheVIClient,clicktheAppSpeedicononthetoolbar.
2 SelectthecheckboxesforthehostsorclustersonwhichtoinstallaprobeandclickInstallProbes.
Aprobeisinstalledoneachselectedhost,regardlessofwhetheranotherprobeisalreadyinstalledonthehost.
TheProbeInstallationwindowdisplaysaseparateentryforeachhostthatyouselect.Eachentryappears
inaseparatepane.
3 (Optional)Configuretheprobeforeachhostentry.
aTypethenameoftheprobeintheProbeNametextbox.
Ifyoudonotspecifyaname,theAppSpeedserverassignsadefaultname.
bFromtheStoragedropdownmenu,selectthestoragedevicetowhichtheprobeconnects.
cFromtheManagementNetworkdropdownmenu,selectthenetworktousetomanagetheprobes:
SelectDHCPtousedynamicaddresssettings.
SelectStaticIPtosetafixedIPaddressforthenetworkmanagementcard.EntertheIPaddress
andnetmaskdetails.Optionally,enterthegatewaydetails.
SelectuptothreemonitoringvSwitches.ThevSwitchessnifftrafficontheconfigured
managementnetwork.Bydefault,thefirstthreeavailablevSwitchesareselected.
NOTEIftheAppSpeedicondoesnotappear,verifythattheAppSpeedpluginisselectedinthePlugins
menu.
NOTEWhenyouselectthecheckboxforacluster,thecheckboxesforeachhostthatitcontainsare
selected.Similarly,whenyouselectahost,theprobesalreadyinstalledonitareselected.
NOTEWhenyouinstallaprobein AppSpeed, distributed vSwitches do not appear in the Probe Installation
window. Tomonitortheseswitches,youmustconfiguretheAppSpeedprobe.See“ConfiguringAppSpeed
withvNetworkDistributedSwitching”onpage19.

Power Probes On or Off
YoucanpowerprobesonorofffromtheProbesManagementwindow.
To power probes on or off
IntheProbesManagementwindow,selectthecheckboxesforoneormoreprobes,andclickPowerOnor
PowerOff.
Delete Probes
Ifyoudonotwanttomonitorthetrafficonaspecifichost,youcanremovetheprobesfromthathost.
To delete probes from hosts
1IntheProbesManagementwindow,selectthecheckboxesforoneormoreprobesonthesameormultiple
hosts,andclickDeleteProbe.
2ClickOKtoconfirm.
Theprobeisremovedfromtheselectedhostsonly.
Adding a License
YoumusthaveanAppSpeedlicensetomonitorservers.
To add a license
1ClickLicensinginthenavigationpaneoftheAdministrationmodule.

3EnterthelicensekeyprovidedbyVMwareinthetextboxandclickOK.
ThelicensekeyisvalidatedanditsdetailsareaddedintheLicensepage.
Verifying the Installation
Youcanverifythesuccessfulinstallationanddeploymentoftheprobesbycheckingtheprobestatusinanyof
thefollowinglocations:

ServerstaborTransactionstaboftheUnmappedTrafficpage
Iftheprobeissuccessfullyinstalledanddeployed,thestatusoftheprobeisRunning.Inaddition,ifactivetraffic
ispresentonthepartofthenetworkthattheprobeismonitoring,thetrafficthroughputisreflectedaccordingly.
NOTEThetrafficthroughputcanbe0ifthereisnotrafficonthemonitoredvSwitchesorifaproblemoccurs
withtheinstallation.Iftheproblempersistsandyouknowthattrafficispresent,seeChapter7,
“Troubleshooting,”onpage27.

Name:Nameoftheserverortransaction.
Endpoint:IPaddressandportsusedbytheserver(Serverstabonly).
Latency:Averageandstandarddeviation(STDEV)latencyratesfortheserverortransaction.
Hits:Averagenumberofhitspersecondfortheserverortransaction,andthetotalnumberofhitsin
thespecifiedtimeframe.
Throughput:Averagethroughputfortheserverortransaction,andthetotalthroughputinthe
