For more detailed information about the switch, refer to Using the Business Policy Switch 2000 (part number 208700-A). This guide includes information about the following topics: • • • • • • Environmental requirements for the installation site (next) Installing the switch on a table (page 9), in a rack (page 10), or on a wall (page 11) Network connection requirements (page 16) Connecting AC power (page 18) Descriptions of LEDs (page 20) Initial switch setup (page 22) Before you begin Make sure the area where you will install and use the Business Policy Switch meets these environmental requirements: • • • • • • • • Ambient temperature between 41° and 104° F (5° and 40° C) Relative humidity between 5% and 85% noncondensing No nearby heat sources such as hot air vents or direct sunlight No nearby sources of severe electromagnetic noise No excessive dust Adequate power source within six feet; one 15-Amp circuit required for each power supply At least 2 inches (5.08 cm) on each side of the switch unit for ventilation. Adequate space at the front and rear of the switch for access to cables. If you are installing a single Business Policy Switch on a table or shelf, make sure the surface will support at least 15 to 20 pounds (7 to 9 kilograms). Because wall compositions vary at different sites, Nortel Networks recommends that an experienced maintenance person choose the appropriate wall-mounting hardware to install the switch safely. 209319-A Installing the switch on a table or shelf You can install a single Business Policy Switch on any flat surface that can safely support the weight of the switch and attached cables (15 to 20 pounds or 7 to 9 kilograms). 9768FA 9769FA 1 Attach the rubber feet at the marked locations. 2 Set the switch on a table or shelf. Allow at least 2 inches (5.1 cm) on each side for proper ventilation and at lease 5 inches (12.7 cm) at the back for power cord clearance. Caution: Do not set a BayStack 10 Power Supply Unit on top of a Business Policy Switch. The BayStack 10 Power Supply weighs approximately 100 pounds (45 kg), and the switch housing is not strong enough to support this weight. Business Policy Switch 2000 ENGLISH 9 10 Installing the switch in an equipment rack Required tool: Phillips screwdriver for attaching brackets to the switch Rack requirements: • • • A space of 2.8 inches is provided for each switch in an EIA or IEC standard 19-inch (48.2-centimeter) equipment rack. The rack is bolted to the floor and braced if necessary. The rack is grounded to the same grounding electrode used by the power service in the area. The ground path must be permanent and must not exceed 1 ohm of resistance from the rack to the grounding electrode. 9756FA 9767FA 1 Attach a bracket to each side of the switch. The bracket with the round holes goes on the right side of the switch, where the round fan vents are located. 2 Slide the switch into the rack. Insert and tighten the rack-mount screws. Caution: Do not set a BayStack 10 Power Supply Unit on top of a Business Policy Switch. The BayStack 10 Power Supply weighs approximately 100 pounds (45 kg), and the switch housing is not strong enough to support this weight. 209319-A Installing the switch on a wall Required tools and materials: • • • • • • • Phillips screwdriver for attaching brackets to the switch Four #8 screws (recommended size) appropriate to the composition of the wall where you will install the switch Screwdriver appropriate to your wall mounting hardware for attaching the switch to the wall (Recommended) sheet of 1/2-inch plywood attached to the wall where you will install the switch Expanding wall anchors if you are installing the switch on a hollow wall (Optional) drill for making pilot holes in the wall Plastic cable clamps to route and support the port cables after you install the switch Be aware of the following considerations when you plan the wall installation: • • • • To install two switches, remember to consider their combined weight: 30 to 40 lb (14 to 18 kg). Attached cables increase the weight of the installation, and the accumulated weight of these cables increases with the height of the mounting location. Place the switch at a height that allows you to see the LEDs. Remove any installed rack-mount brackets or rubber footpads. Business Policy Switch 2000 ENGLISH 11 12 Installing a single switch Note: The bracket with the round opening goes on the right side of the switch, where the round fan vents are located. 9758FA 9754FA 1 Slip a bracket over each side of the switch with the bracket tabs against the recessed mounting holes on the bottom of the switch. 209319-A 2 Fasten the brackets to the switch, using two flat-head screws in each bracket. To complete the switch installation, go to “Attaching the switch to the wall” on page 15. Installing two switches Note: The bracket with the round opening goes on the right side of the switch, where the round fan vents are located. 9759FA 1 Set each bracket with the top tabs of the bracket against the recessed mounting holes in the bottom of one switch. 9760FA 2 Fasten the brackets to the bottom of the switch, using two flathead screws in each bracket. 9761FA 9762 FA 3 Set the second switch on its back panel. Slide the first switch with attached brackets over the second switch. 4 Using two flathead screws in each bracket, fasten the brackets to the bottom of the second switch. Note: If you are attaching the switch to a hollow wall, use expanding wall anchors. 9765FA 9766FA 3 Set the switch in place over the screws. Tighten the screws to secure the switch to the wall. 4 Attach network cables. Use plastic cable clamps to support the cables and route them away from fans and vents on the switch. Do not let cables hang freely from the port connectors. The weight of these cables can damage the connectors. Note: The RJ-45 ports on the switch are wired as MDI-X connectors to connect end stations using straight-through cables. If you are connecting an RJ-45 port to another MDI-X port, such as another switch or a hub, use a crossover cable. Refer to the tables that follow for connector pin assignments. Without a proper ground, a person who touches the switch is in danger of receiving an electrical shock. Lack of a grounding path to the switch may result in excessive emissions. 209319-A 9853EA Connect the power cord to the back of the switch, and then connect the cord to a power outlet. The Business Policy Switch does not have a power switch. When you connect the AC power cord to a suitable AC power outlet, the switch powers up immediately. Warning: Disconnecting the power cord is the only way to turn off power to this device. Always connect the power cord in a location that can be reached quickly and safely in case of an emergency. The tables describe LED operation for a switch that has completed its power-on self-tests. Off There is no AC power to the switch, or the power supply has failed. Green/steady The power-on self test is complete, and the switch is operating normally. Green/blinking A nonfatal error occurred during the self-test. Off The switch failed the self-test. Green/steady The switch is connected to an RPSU (redundant power supply unit) and can receive power if necessary. Off The switch is not connected to an RPSU, or the RPSU is not supplying power. Green/steady The switch is connected to the Cascade A In connector on the upstream unit. Amber/steady This unit has detected a problem with the switch connected to the cascade Up connector. To maintain the integrity of the stack, this unit has bypassed its upstream neighbor and has wrapped the stack backplane onto an alternate path. Status RPSU Cas Up Green or amber/ The software version is incompatible or is unable to obtain a unit ID because blinking the Renumber Stack Unit table is full. This unit is on the ring but cannot participate in the stack configuration. Off 209319-A The switch is in standalone mode. This unit is on the ring but is unable to participate in the stack configuration. Base Green/steady This switch is the stack base unit. Green/blinking There is a stack configuration error. Either multiple base units or no base units are configured in the stack. Amber This unit is operating as the temporary base unit in the stack configuration. Off This switch is not the stack base unit, or it is operating in standalone mode. Port LEDs on the Business Policy Switch Label Color/Status Meaning 10/100 Green/steady This port is set to operate at 100 Mb/s, and the link is good. Green blinking This port has been disabled by software. Amber/steady This port is set to operate at 10 Mb/s, and the link is good. Amber/blinking This port has been disabled by software. Off The link is bad, or nothing is connected to this port. Green/steady There is activity on this port. Off There is no activity on this port. Activity Business Policy Switch 2000 ENGLISH 21 22 Initial switch setup The Business Policy Switch begins switching as soon as you attach network devices and connect the switch to power. To manage the switch using SNMP or to perform TFTP operations, you must set certain IP parameters. In addition, if you are connecting Business Policy Switches into a stack configuration, you must supply additional parameters to properly set up the stack. Refer to Using the Business Policy Switch 2000 for more information about the console menus and configuring your Business Policy Switch. Setting IP parameters For the initial setup of a standalone switch or a stack configuration, you must set the following IP parameters: • • • IP address of the switch or the stack Subnet mask Gateway address. To set the IP parameters: 1 Connect a terminal to the Console port on the switch. 2 Set the terminal protocol as described in Using the Business Policy Switch 2000. 3 Connect the switch to power. 4 After the Nortel Networks logo is displayed, press [Ctrl]-Y to display the Main Menu. At first the screen displays the Main Menu for a standalone switch. Then, if the switch is part of a stack configuration, the screen is refreshed within 20 seconds to show the Main Menu for a stack configuration. Business Policy Switch 2000 30 Montieren des Switch in einem Geräteschrank Erforderliches Werkzeug: Kreuzschlitz-Schraubendreher zur Befestigung der Halterungen am Switch Anforderungen an den Geräteschrank: • • • In einem herkömmlichen 19"-EIA/IEC-Geräteschrank (48,2 cm) ist für jeden Switch 7 cm (2,8") Höhe verfügbar. Der Schrank wird mit dem Boden verschraubt und gegebenenfalls versteift. Der Schrank wird an demselben Masseanschluss geerdet, die auch für die Stromversorgung in diesem Bereich verwendet wird. El bastidor se atornilla al suelo y se asegura con soportes si es necesario. El bastidor se conecta a tierra en el mismo electrodo de conexión a tierra que usa el servicio de suministro eléctrico en ese lugar.
