862-01545 µLink System ManualIssue 1 Page 1Chapter 1: Purpose and PlanningIntroduction toChapter 1 Chapter 1 is aimed at management and planning staffto enable them to assess the suitability and logisticrequirements of the µLink Digital Radio, hereafterreferred to as the µLink.µµLink ProductFamily The µLink design philosophy was to produce a rangeof products, with the data rate dependent purely on theIndoor Unit (IU) and the frequency band dependentpurely on the Outdoor Unit (OU). Thus resulting in acommon IU that can operate with different frequencyOUs, or alternatively, an OU that remains unchangedwhile the data rate is altered or upgraded.Role and Purpose The µLink operates in the 2.4 GHz ISM frequencyband. It provides a full duplex, point-to-point, digitalradio link supporting user data rates up to 2048 kbit/s.It is used to transport digital data between two or moresites. Whether the digital information is voice, telephony, cellular, data or video as required byvarious applications, the µLink can be deployed inurban and rural networks as an interconnect solution.Typical applications for the system include:• Telecommunications companies, cellular operatorsand private carriers using low cost spread spectrumE1/T1 links to substitute for conventional copper orlicences band microwave links• Providing last mile leg in urban areas wherefrequency bands are congested• Rural communications• Corporate Networks

862-01545 µLink System ManualIssue 1 Page 7PlanningInformation Site EvaluationWhen planning a site for a digital radio relay link, it isof the utmost importance that you take the operationalenvironment of the proposed site into account. The combined effect of atmospheric environmentalfactors such as rain and lightning, atmosphericattenuation, signal path obstruction, propagationfading, air temperature gradients, ice build-up, windand solar radiation can contribute towards reducingthe level of performance of the system (as measured interms of its capability to transfer data without error). In the higher frequency bands, rainfall is the mainattenuation mechanism which limits errorperformance. Ice and snow will obviously have asimilar effect. Severely cold, and excessively warmclimatic conditions outside the scope of the operatingtemperature range can affect the function of thesystem, especially the outdoor equipment (seeEnvironmental Characteristics on page 18 of thismanual). Also, if masts are not sufficiently rigid, very strongwinds can affect the antenna beam alignment andoutdoor equipment reliability due to wind force build-up and/or vibration in the mast mounted equipment.Non-atmospheric environmental factors such as theelectromagnetic interference due to the presence ofother antennas, path clutter and terrain topographycan also have a detrimental effect on systemperformance and should be carefully assessed beforeand during installation.
µLink System Manual 862-01545Page 8Issue 1bMultipath EffectsRefer to Figure 4. The µLink digital radio operates at afrequency of 2.4 GHz. It is likely that it will beinfluenced by the effects of multipath. Understandingthese effects will help to install the µLink digital radiolink and maximise the reliability of the link.Multipath fade occurs when the receiving antennareceives not only the direct signal from the transmittingantenna but also a signal from the transmitting antennathat has reflected off the ground or nearby obstacles. The reflected signal takes a longer path to reach thereceiver and acts as an interferer since it is not in phasewith the direct signal. The amplitude of this interferercan be almost equal to that of the direct path, thusdegrading the link.Multipath is dependent on transmit frequency and thespecific geometry of the link such as antenna heights, distance between the antennas and the local terrain. Tocounteract multipath, the installer can change thefrequency at which the link operates (a change by 1channel should be sufficient) or slightly adjust the heightof one or both of the antennas ( a change of 0.5m istypical, but this depends on the geometry of the link).User DataMDR2400 OUMDR2400 IUUser DataMDR2400 OUMDR2400 IUDirect RF PathReflection PathFigure 4. 862-01545 µLink System ManualIssue 1 Page 65Chapter 6: Functional DescriptionIntroduction toChapter 6 Chapter 6 provides a detailed description of the µLinkSystem as well as a brief description of the LineReplaceable Units (LRUs) comprising the system. This chapter is aimed at providing the servicetechnician with an understanding of the function andoperation of the µLink System.µµLink SystemDescription The µLink System is a Direct Sequence SpreadSpectrum Digital Radio operating in the 2.4 GHz ISMfrequency band. Various payload data interfaces canbe installed, ie. T1 and E1. The µLink system can beextended to include other frequency bands merely byusing a different microwave transceiver in the OutdoorUnit (OU). The Indoor Unit (IU) is not dependent onthe frequency band used.A µLink Radio Relay Station comprises a single IU, anOU (with integral antenna), interconnected by a customcable. On-site management and maintenance is achievedby using a Craft Terminal that interfaces to the IU.A radio relay link consists of a complementary pair ofµLink stations. It is possible to extend range bylinking further station pairs in a multiple hopconfiguration. The following options may be added to a µLinkDigital Radio System:• Local area network for networking of multipleradio relay stations.• IP routers, bridges, and gateways for networking tothe Telecommunications Network Management(TNM) system.
