Bluetooth Access Point
TM
Axis Communications is entering the wireless
communications market. With a unique
expertise in network connectivity and strong
technology partnerships, Axis is a leader in
the converging world of wireless and wired
networks.
Axis is creating new possibilities for wireless
broadband services for users with mobile devices,
by offering solutions for local mobile systems.
Local mobile systems in this context means access
points based on unlicensed radio technologies —
such as Bluetooth wireless technology, IEEE 802.11
and HiperLAN/2, and a system platform incorporating system intelligence for security, mobility and
access control.
The dramatic growth of wireless broadband
services based on unlicensed radio technologies is
driven by three fundamental industry trends:
i Sustained high growth rate for mobile devices — mobile/cell phones, PDAs and laptop computers, due to decreasing
investment and usage costs as well as developments in functionality, battery life length and size.
i Unlicensed radio technologies are being deployed for short distance wireless voice and data communication, such as
Bluetooth wireless technology.
i Extensive roll out of broadband access to Internet, for example xDSL, cable modem and Ethernet.
Product Description
The Bluetooth Access Point from Axis is a wireless access point based on Bluetooth wireless technology supporting both
telephony and data services. Like other Axis products, it is based on the latest version of our integrated system-on-a-chip,
ETRAX, which is optimized for Internet applications and features embedded Linux. The Bluetooth Access Point will be
developed and expanded into a product family encompassing other wireless technologies.

User Scenarios
i At the office
Upon entering the office, you have immediate wireless access via your laptop to all applications on the company’s Intranet,
email, Internet browsing, printing and file access. The calendar and address book software in your PDA will be automatically synchronized. Using your mobile/cell phone with Bluetooth wireless technology, you can make free internal calls and
inexpensive external calls, using the company’s IP telephony service, from anywhere within the office.
i At the airport
When you enter the airport, your mobile device is identified by the local mobile operator —which could be the airline,
lounge or airport administration center, and the check-in gate for your departing flight is presented on your display. You
may also pull up additional information such as estimated check-in waiting time, whether the flight is on time or delayed,
and arrival time to your destination. If you wish, special duty-free offers in combination with product advertisements could
be presented on the display. Furthermore, a broadband connection for accessing the Internet and email access is available,
as well as phone calls via the airport’s phone network at a considerably lower charge than the regular mobile/cell phone
system. When you arrive at your destination, the baggage belt number will be presented on the display. While you wait for
your baggage, you can book a taxi, hotel accommodation or any other airport related service using your mobile device.
i In the hotel
As you enter your room, you have instant wireless broadband access to the Internet and email on your laptop. From your
mobile/cell phone you can make business calls at a considerably lower charge than the hotel’s regular phone service. In the
conference room, you have access to all your files on the company’s intranet. While waiting for your potential customer in
the restaurant, you look up the latest sales statistics in order to be fully up to date. When you check out, the bill is confirmed
by a single click on the check-out button and you can bypass waiting in line to check out and catch the pre-ordered taxi.
i At home
Entering your home - your mobile phone becomes an IP-phone, using Voice over IP, providing cordless telephony
within your home as well as inexpensive external phone calls. Your laptop is always connected to the Internet — anywhere you are within your home. Through an intuitive Web interface you are able to control your household appliances
with Bluetooth wireless technology.
i While shopping
As you enter the retail center, your mobile device downloads a program that supports you in all the aspects of shopping. The
program can assist you in finding that special item, whether it is available in stock, and whether or not the retail center is
offering a promotional discount on your item of choice. The system automatically transmits all your purchases to the checkout counter for fast and easy payment.
