eReader User Guide
The complete eReader User Guide is loaded in the device. To open it, tap the
application icon tap on the eReader cover in My Novel Library.
Print the eReader User Guide
If you want to print the eReader User Guide, you need to use Adobe Digital
Editions (ADE) software.
1. Register a free Adobe account, from the Adobe website:
www.adobe.com/cfusion/membership.
2. Go to www.adobe.com/products/digitaleditions to download Adobe Digital
Editions (ADE) software to your computer.
3. Follow the prompts to install the ADE software and activate the software with
your computer.
4. Activate your device by connecting it to your computer via the USB cable.
5. Wait until ADE detects your device and displays the Device Setup Assistant.
6. Click
Authorize Device Finished.
7. Double-click on the device titled PD_Novel.
8. Double-click on the eReader User Guide file to open it in ADE.
9. At the top of the application window, click READING Print.
Getting Started
If you tap an application icon or a function button multiple times without waiting for
the process to finish, a message may appear stating the application is busy now.
Select Force close to stop the process, or select Wait to allow the process to finish.
1Charge the Device
You cannot charge the device using the USB cable.
You can use the device while the battery is charging.
Plug the power adapter into an electrical wall outlet, and then connect to your
device to fully charge the battery before use (approx. 4 hours). When fully charged,
the battery icon displays as: . While charging, the battery icon displays as: .

2Turn the Device On
Slide the power button and release to turn on.
3Set language
Select your desired language.
4Set Date & Time
IMPORTANT - In order to connect with your Barnes & Noble online account or to
set up your Email account, the Date and Time must be set correctly according to
your location.
Tap Select time zone select the correct time zone for your location
(finger slide vertically to scroll the list). The date and time should automatically
update to the correct setting, but if they do not, tap Set date and/or Set time to
update accordingly.
Tap to display the Home screen.
5Calibrate the Screen Sensors
Tap to display the Applications screen Settings application icon.
Tap Sound and Display Touch Calibrate.
The screen displays a blank screen with “+” in a specific location. Use a blunt
pointed device to accurately tap the “+” in the designated spot.
Repeat in 3 more screens that appear.
If successful, continue to Wi-Fi Network Setup. Otherwise repeat the calibration.
6Set up Wi-Fi Network
Since many features require a Wi-Fi connection, we recommend you set up your
Wi-Fi network now.
Tap the Wi-Fi Settings application icon.
Make sure Wi-Fi is selected .
The device automatically scans and lists all local Wi-Fi Networks found.
A indicates secure networks that require login name/password to connect.
Tap the desired network to which you want to connect enter the Network
Password if applicable tap Connect.
Tap to return to the Home screen.

If your Wi-Fi network is set as hidden, it won’t be found by the auto scan.
Tap Add Wi-Fi network and follow the prompts to add your network.
The Wi-Fi icon on the top of screens indicates the status as follows:
= Connected = Not connected, Wi-Fi turned ON
= Not connected and Wi-Fi turned OFF (power saver)
When the device goes into sleep mode, the Wi-Fi disconnects from the
local network, but will automatically reconnect when out of sleep mode
(may take up to 30 seconds to reconnect).
Connecting to Public Wi-Fi Hotspot
If you are connecting via a public Wi-Fi hotspot, it may be necessary to
immediately launch the browser and provide the hotspot login information prior to
having an active internet connection.
Follow steps 1-4 above to select the hotspot Wi-Fi network.
Tap the Browser application icon.
Enter the hotspot login information.

To move an icon to the Home screen, touch & hold on the icon, and then release it when
it appears on the Home screen. Touch, hold, and then slide icons to reposition them on
the screen. Touch, hold and slide icons onto to remove them from the Home
screen.

Your media files must be stored in the /eBooks folder of the internal memory or
in an /eBooks folder at the root of a SD card.

Overview of Buying & Downloading B&N Media
Tap the application icon on the Home screen.
Tap the B&N Bookstore tab.
The first time, you are prompted for your B&N login information.
If you have an existing account, tap into the entry fields to enter your
B&N account email address and password.
Or to register a new account, tap Create an Account, and then enter all
required user information.
You must have a registered Barnes & Noble account with a valid credit
card in order to purchase and download DRM protected eBooks or to
download borrowed eBooks.
Your login information is stored so you are not required to enter the login
information when selecting the B&N Bookstore or B&N Library later.
After a successful login, the B&N Bookstore displays the
current top selling B&N Books, Newspapers and Magazines.
Shop and purchase Books, Newspapers and Magazines, or get Free
Samples. Confirm to download to your device.
To display only Newspapers, Magazines, or other categories,
tap Select Favorites Favorites select desired category.
In My Novel Library, tap on a media cover to open it in the Reader.

Sign in to your B&N Account
IMPORTANT - In order to connect with your Barnes & Noble online account, the
Date and Time must be set correctly according to your location.
1. Tap the application icon B&N Bookstore or B&N Library tab.
2. The first time, you are prompted for your B&N login information. If you have
an existing account, tap into the entry fields to enter your B&N account email
address and password Sign In.
Or to register a new account, tap Create an Account, and then enter all
required user information.
3. After a successful login, the B&N Bookstore displays the current top selling
B&N Books, Magazines and Newspapers. The B&N Library displays all the
media in your B&N online account.
Your login information is stored so you are not required to enter the login
information when selecting the B&N Bookstore or B&N Library later.
B&N Bookstore
You must have a registered Barnes & Noble account with a valid credit card
in order to purchase and download DRM protected Books or to download
borrowed Books.
If the Wi-Fi signal is weak, the contents of the Bookstore may not be able to
load in the device. Move to a better Wi-Fi signal area and the Bookstore will
reconnect and retry to load the Bookstore contents.
1. Tap the application icon B&N Bookstore tab.
The first time you are prompted for your B&N login information. After
successful login, the B&N Bookstore displays the top selling B&N Books,
Magazines and Newspapers.
2. You can re-sort the media by tapping on the icon next to Sort by in the upper
right corner of the screen.
3. Tap on
Buy Now, Get Sample, or Get Book for Free to add to your B&N
online account.
Or
Tap on a media listing select View Detail to view a summary of the media,
and then you can tap Buy Now, Get Sample, or Get Book for Free.

4. If you select Buy Now, you are prompted to confirm the purchase. Tap Yes to
confirm Yes to download the media to your device.
5. If you select Get Sample or Get Book for Free, you are prompted to
download the media immediately to your device. If you do not, you can
download it later from the B&N Library tab.
6. Tap to return to the B&N Bookstore screen from a Detail screen.
B&N Library
Use the B&N Library tab to sync with and display the media in your online B&N
account so you can download it to your device.
1. Tap the application icon B&N Library tab.
2. If prompted, tap Yes to sync with your B&N Library.
3. You can re-sort the media by tapping on the icon next to Sort by in the upper
right corner of the screen. Sort options:
Date Added (descending, most current first) (Default)
Date Added (ascending, oldest first)
Title A-Z
Title Z-A
Author A-Z (by last name)
Author Z-A (by last name)
4. Based on the status of media in your library, tap Download, Download
Sample, Downloading, Read, Buy Now, View Subscription, Renew, Lend to
a friend, or Return.
5. Downloaded media is displayed in My Novel library.
My Novel Library
The My Novel library displays all media that you downloaded directly from
Barnes & Noble, transferred from Adobe Digital Editions, or copied into your
device from your computer.
If you have a SD card inserted with media files stored in a folder titled /eBooks,
those media files are also displayed in My Novel library.
1. Tap the application icon My Novel tab.
2. The media you have downloaded or copied into the device from your
computer or SD card is displayed. Scroll the screen vertically to access all
media.

3. You can re-sort the media by tapping on the icon next to Sort by in the upper
right corner of the screen. Sort options:
Date Added (descending, most recently downloaded listed first) (Default)
Date Added (ascending, oldest downloaded listed first)
Title A-Z
Title Z-A
Author A-Z (by last name)
Author Z-A (by last name)
4. Tap on a media listing to open it in the Reader.
The media labels signify the status of the media:
New = media has not yet been opened
Sample = free sample of book
Borrowed = borrowed book from another B&N user
Lent = you loaned book to another B&N user
Returned = you returned the borrowed book to lender
Expired = was borrowed more than 14 days ago
5. Newspapers and Magazines: Even if multiple issues are available, only one
cover is displayed.
Tap on a newspaper or magazine cover to access the available issue list. Tap
on an issue to open it.
OR
Touch & hold on a newspaper or magazine cover to display Go to folder and
Delete folder options.
Go to folder displays all available issues. You can single tap to open an
issue, or touch & hold on an issue to assign it to a bookshelf or delete it.
Delete folder deletes all downloaded issues and folder.
If downloaded books have separate cover files, they are downloaded along with the
book. For books that don’t have separate cover files, covers are extracted from the
book file.
For books imported from other sources, Adobe eBook loaded through ADE or
DRM-free book covers are displayed right away. However, Barnes & Noble DRM
protected books do not display covers until you have unlocked the file by entering the
name and Credit Card number that was used to purchase the media.
Some sections of magazines and newspapers contain linked topic headings; tap on a
topic heading to jump to the associated article.

Reader
The Reader displays your EPUB or PDF media files.
When you exit the Reader, immediately go into the B&N Library and tap
to sync the last read page number with your online account.
In My Novel screen, tap on a media listing to open it in the Reader.
If the media file is an Adobe DRM protected file that was copied into the device by a
method other than an Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) transfer, you are prompted to load
it into the device using ADE. (Refer to the eReader User Guide for ADE instructions.)
If a DRM media file was copied into the device rather than downloaded from your
current B&N account, you are prompted for the name and Credit Card number that
was used to purchase the media.
Some sections of Magazines and Newspapers contain linked topic headings; tap on a
topic heading to jump to the associated article.

Adobe® eBooks
eBooks and other digital content can be transferred to your device through the
Adobe® Digital Editions (ADE) program. You can also use ADE to transfer
books that you have downloaded from public Libraries using global distributors
(such as Overdrive.com).
If an Adobe eBook has an expiration date, it will also expire on your
eReader. If an eBook is returned in ADE before it expires, the next time you
connect your eReader to your computer, ADE updates the status of the
returned eBook on your eReader, and you won’t be able to read it.
Register and Download Software
1. Register a free Adobe account, from the Adobe website:
www.adobe.com/cfusion/membership.
2. Go to www.adobe.com/products/digitaleditions to download Adobe
Digital Editions (ADE) software to your computer.
3. Follow the prompts to install the software.
Authorize your Device with ADE
1. After registering and installing the ADE software, enter your Adobe
account login information to activate your computer with the software.
2. The ADE program opens.
3. Connect your device to your computer using the USB cable.
4. ADE detects your device and displays the Device Setup Assistant.
5. Click
Authorize Device, click Finished.
6. After you authorize your device, it appears as a device in ADE titled
PD_Novel.
Download eBooks into ADE
There are many resources for downloading free and purchased eBooks into
ADE, including borrowed eBooks from public libraries.
Adobe has a Sample eBook Library which is a good place to start
downloading eBooks to see how ADE works:

Click on the Download button on an eBook listing, and when prompted to
Open or Save, click Open.
The eBook automatically downloads and opens in the ADE program.

Transfer eBooks from ADE into your device
1. Drag and drop the eBooks from the ADE collection into your device
(PD_Novel).
2. Disconnect the USB cable.
3. The
My Novel Library refreshes and the ADE transferred eBooks are
displayed.
4. Tap on the eBook to open in the Reader.
Office Suite Viewer
The OfficeSuite application can be used to open files of the following formats:
DOC, DOCX, TXT, XLS, XLSX, CSV, PPT, PPTX, PPS, PPSX and PDF
1. Tap the OfficeSuite application icon to open the File Browser.
2. For files stored in the internal memory, tap Device PD_Novel.
For files stored on a SD card, tap Memory Card.
3. Tap on the folder containing the file(s) you want to open.
4. Tap on the data file you want to open. The appropriate viewer launches and
displays your data file.
When in the file browser or you’ve opened a data file, tap to display menu
options.
Refer to the eReader User Guide for complete menu option instructions.
Upgrade to OfficeSuite Pro Editor
The standard OfficeSuite viewer application included with your device is
designed as a viewer only. The OfficeSuite Pro version allows you to create
new documents and edit existing ones, as well as other features the free viewer
application does not offer.
You can purchase a full working version by tapping the OfficeSuite
application icon tap OfficeSuite Pro Upgrade. Follow the prompts to
complete your purchase and download the application.
If you do not want to download the application during the purchase process,
you can download the apk to your computer from the purchase confirmation
email which contains the download link. Save the apk to a SD card or to the
root folder of the device and then install using ES File Explorer.

SAM (SlideME)
SlideME is a market offering thousands of free and low cost third party AndroidTM
applications.
If your third party application causes the top function menu buttons
to disappear, press the Volume button on the side of the device
to re-display them. However, some applications may designate the volume button
for other functions, and you may need to shut the device off in order to exit the
application.
In order to save memory space, application .apk files are automatically deleted
after installation has been completed.
Download FREE applications
1. Tap the SAM (SlideME) application icon. The browser launches and
displays the market web store.
2. Tap on a category to display the individual applications.
3. Tap on a desired application to view a description.
4. Tap Compatibility to view the compatibility requirements.
5. To download to your device, tap Download Install Install.
6. Tap Open to run the application now, or Done to return to the application.
7. Tap to return to the category listing.
Purchase AndroidTM applications
You must have a SlideME account registered with your payment methods in order
to purchase applications from SlideME. It is recommended that you sign
up/register through your computer by going to https://slideme.org/user/register.
You can download FREE applications without a SlideME account.
1. Tap the SAM (SlideME) application icon. The browser launches and
displays the market web store.
2. Tap on a category to display the individual applications.
3. Tap on a desired application to view a description.
4. Tap
Compatibility to view the compatibility requirements.

5. To download to your device, tap Download Approve.
6. Enter your account login information, tap Login.
7. After successful login, tap Purchase Install.
8. Tap
Open to run the application now, or Done to return to the application
description screen.
9. Tap to return to the category listing.
Install Third Party Android Applications
There are many interesting and free AndroidTM applications that can be found on
the web. Just launch your web browser and do a search for “Android
applications”.
If your third party application causes the top function menu buttons

volume button for other functions, and you may need to shut the device off in
order to exit the application.
ES File Explorer is a third party application designed for phones. References to
phones and multiple features are not applicable to this device.
Install using ES File Explorer Application
1. Copy the Android .apk file you want to install onto a SD card insert SD
card into your eReader.
2. Tap the ES File Explorer application icon.
3. Locate the folder on your SD card in which the .apk application file was
saved.
4. Tap on the .apk file Install. The application is installed and the application
icon is added to the Applications screen.
5. Tap
Open to launch now, or Done to return to the previous screen.

Install by Downloading Direct from Website
You can download AndroidTM applications directly from websites, and then
quickly and easily install them on your device.
1. Tap the Browser application icon to launch the internet browser.
2. Enter the website URL, and tap the download link for the application you want
to install on your device.
3. After the download is complete, touch & hold on the download file (in the
Download history screen) tap Open Install.
Uninstall AndroidTM Applications
You can also quickly and easily uninstall the AndroidTM applications that you
have installed.
1. Tap Settings Applications Manage applications.
2. Tap the application you want to uninstall Uninstall.
3. Tap OK to confirm the Uninstall.

Limited Warranty
The limited warranty set forth below is given by PanImage with respect to the PanImage Novel™
line of products (the “Device”) purchased and used in the United States of America. PanImage
warrants this product as follows:
LABOR: For a period of one (1) year from the date of purchase, if this Device is found to be
defective, PanImage will repair or replace the Device, at its sole option, at no charge. After this
one (1) year period, labor charges will be charged on a case by case basis. If your Device is
repaired or replaced during the Warranty Period, it will be covered by this Limited Warranty for
the remainder of the original Warranty Period or ninety (90) days from the date of shipment of
the replaced Device, whichever is longer.
PARTS: For a period of one (1) year from the date of purchase, if this Device is found to be
defective, PanImage will supply at no cost, new or rebuilt replacement parts, at its option, at no
charge. After this one (1) year period, parts will be charged for on a case by case basis.
Modifications not approved by the party responsible for compliance will void user’s authority to
operate the equipment. If your Device is repaired or replaced during the Warranty Period, it will
be covered by this Limited Warranty for the remainder of the original Warranty Period or ninety
(90) days from the date of shipment of the replaced Device, whichever is longer.
This Limited Warranty does not cover damage or malfunctions caused by accident, disaster,
misuse, abuse, negligence or other external causes; third-party products; Internet or
telecommunications failures; commercial use; unauthorized opening, use, service, tampering,
alteration, repair or modification; or inadequate packing or shipping procedures. This Limited
Warranty also does not cover cosmetic damage or normal wear and tear. This Limited Warranty
does not apply to Devices sold as used, refurbished or reconditioned. This Limited Warranty
does not cover damage caused by third party applications such as viruses, malware or other
software. This Limited Warranty will be void if the Serial Number on your Device has been
removed, tampered with or defaced or if your Device has been opened or serviced without
authorization, tampered with, altered or modified. This Limited Warranty applies to your Device
only (i.e., the hardware), and not to the software within your device. Similarly, this Limited
Warranty does not cover downloaded data or materials, or accessories and peripherals, except
as expressly provided above. This warranty is valid only in the United States.
The Device must be accompanied by a copy of the original retail purchase receipt for the
warranty to be valid. If no proof of purchase is attached, the warranty will not be honored and
repair costs incurred will be the responsibility of the end user. This warranty is only valid with
written documentation detailing the complaint attached to the outside or inside of the carton.
This warranty does not provide protection for the loss of data, regardless of format or cause.
PanImage reserves the right to modify and change the design of this Device without prior
notice, written or otherwise.
Limitations. TO THE EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, THE WARRANTY AND REMEDIES SET FORTH
