Neverstartthe engine/motorwithoutcheckingto see thatthe throttle controlis in the idlepositionand thatthe parkingbrakeis set. Neverstartthe engine/motorunlessyou are properlyseatedwith yourhandsfirmly on the controls. Nevertamperwith,alter,or changethe vehicle'sengine/motor settings.The engine/motorgovernoris factory set and protects theengine/motorfrom damage.Excessiveengine/motorspeedis potentiallydangerousto the operator,bystanders,andthe engine/ motoritself. • All guardsmustbe in placepriorto startingtheengine. Alwaysreplacetorque-typeIocknutswith newIocknutsof thesame typeafterremovingthe old Iocknuts. AdditionalWarnings (continued) Fueling • Checkthefuel supplybeforeeachuse. Never fill thefuel tankwhile theengineis runningor hot.Alwaysallowat least1in.of expansion spaceat thetop ofthe fuel tank.Thereshouldnot be anyfuel in the filler neck.Replacethe fuel captightlyafterrefuelingto preventa fuel spillage,fire, or explosionhazard. Alwaysuse an originalgas capor an approvedOEMreplacement. Neverfill fuel tankwhile thevehicleis insidea building.Gasoline vaporscan causeinjuryor deathand can posea fire or explosion risk. • Movethevehicleat least10ft. beforestartingthe engine. Useextremecautionwhen startingtheengine.Hotengine,muffler, or drivecomponentscan causeseriousburnson contact. Maintenance • Do not modifythe vehiclefrom the manufacturer'soriginaldesign and configuration. Neverwash or operatethevehiclein freezing temperatures.Water canfreeze in thethrottlecableconduitand/oron thethrottle mechanism,possiblyresultingin throttlesticking,whichcancause theengineto continueto runand resultin lossof control. Ensurethatthere is no dust,dirt,or waterwhichhas mixedin thefuel. Pleaseuseregularunleaded gasoline ENGINEOIL Yourscooterhasa four-stroke engine. Pleaseuseoil as describedin the chartbelow. Neverattachany articlesto the handlebar.Stowany cargoon the luggage rackor in the under-seatstoragebox.Do not carry cargoweighingmorethan 10 poundson the luggagerack.Alwaysholdthe rear handholdwhen lifting thescooter. Breaking in • • • • • • Followingthis break-inprocedureensuresthatyourscooteris functioning properlyand maximizesengine life. Neverdrivethisvehicleover25mphduringthefirst 250 milesof operation.Excessivespeedcouldresultin enginefailure. Alwaysuse fresh 89 octanegasoline.Avoid gasolinethat contains alcohol,whichcandamagerubbergasketsand engineseals. Checkandadjustthe brakes,throttlecable,tire pressure,and fasteners weeklybeforeriding.This is in additionto the pre-ride inspection. Scheduleregularmaintenancewithyour authorizedBaja Motorsportsservicecenter. Neveradd oilto thegasoline;your scooterusesa 4-strokeengine withan internallubricatingsystem. Operation (continued) Ignition switch The main ignitionswitchcontainsthreepositions: • ON (1):The enginecanstart, thekey cannotbe removed. • OFF (2):This positionshutsoff theengineand allowsyou to removethe key. • LOCK(3): Fromthe OFFposition,pushinward and turnthe key counterclockwise tothe LOCK positionwhileturningthe steeringcolumntothe left and shakingit lightlyto engagethesteeringlock. Removekey. Brake Levers and Throttle I Rearbrake (4):Whenstoppingthe scooter,squeezethe rearbrake smoothlyand firmly. Alwaysengagethe rearbrakefirst. Frontbrake(5): Squeezethe levergentlyat first to avoidlockingthe front wheel.Mostof you stoppingpowercomesfrom the front wheel, whichshouldalwaysbe usedto supplementthe rearwheel. WARNING!USEEXTREMECAUTIONWHENENGAGING THE FRONTBRAKETOAVOIDLOCKINGTHE FRONT WHEEL.LOCKINGTHE FRONTWHEELCANCAUSEA SERIOUSACCIDENT. Throttlegrip (6):The rotarythrottlegrip is on the right handlebar. Accelerateby rotatingthe throttletowardsyou.Gentlyapplythe throttleto avoidenginefrom stalling.Deceleratebyrotatingthe throttleawayfrom you.The throttleincludesa safetyspringthat snapsthethrottlebackto idlewhen released. Operation (continued) Right brake/ switch assembly • On/Off Safety stop Switch (1) The On/Offsafetystop switch needsto be at "on" position beforescooterwillstart. The safetystop switchis availablein caseof an emergency. • Electric starter switch (2) The electricstarterswitch is locateddirectlyunderOn/Off safetystopswitch.
