Other usagewill invalidate any warranty provided with this apparatus and may be dangerous.ACCESSORIESUse only those accessories approved by RIM. The use of any accessories not approved by RIM for usein conjunction with the handheld will invalidate any approval or warranty applicable to the handheldand may be dangerous.DRIVINGCheck the laws and regulations on the use of wireless devices in the areas where you drive. Alwaysobey them. The use of any alert device to operate a vehicle's lights or horn on public roads is notpermitted.Avoid using the handheld in any environment requiring your full attention, such as when driving avehicle. If you have a pacemaker, ensure that you are using thehandheld in accordance with the safety requirements associated with your particular pacemaker,which may include the following:•Always keep the handheld more than 20 cm (approximately 8 inches) from the pacemaker when the handheld is turned ON;•Do not carry the handheld in a breast pocket;•If the handheld has a voice option, use the ear opposite the pacemaker for making and receiving calls to minimize the potential for interference.•If you have any reason to suspect that interference is taking place, turn your handheld radio OFF immediately.Hearing AidsSome digital wireless devices may interfere with some hearing aids. In the event of such interference,consult your service provider or contact the manufacturer of your hearing aid to discuss alternatives.Other Medical DevicesIf you use any other personal medical device, consult the manufacturer of your device to determine ifthey are adequately shielded from external RF energy. Your physician may be able to assist you inobtaining this information. Turn your handheld radio OFF in health care facilities when any regulations posted in these areasinstruct you to do so. Hospitals or health care facilities may be using equipment that could be sensitiveto external RF energy.Posted FacilitiesTurn your handheld radio OFF in any facility where posted notices so require.BLASTING AREASTo avoid interfering with blasting operations, turn the wireless feature of your handheld radio OFFwhen in a “blasting area” or in areas posted: “Turn off two-way radio”. Obey all signs and instructions.POTENTIALLY EXPLOSIVE ATMOSPHERESTurn your handheld radio OFF when in any area with a potentially explosive atmosphere and obey allsigns and instructions. Sparks in such areas could cause an explosion or fire resulting in bodily injuryor even death.Areas with a potentially explosive atmosphere are often, but not always, clearly marked. They includefueling areas such as gasoline/petrol stations; below deck on boats; fuel or chemical transfer or storagefacilities; vehicles using liquefied petroleum gas (such as propane or butane); areas where the aircontains chemicals or particles, such as grain, dust, or metal powders; and any other area where youwould normally be advised to turn off your vehicle engine.
5Important safety informationADDITIONAL SAFETY GUIDELINESBattery: Discard the handheld properly. As the unit contains a lithium-ion battery, neither thehandheld nor the lithium battery should be disposed of in fire. Dispose of the lithium battery inaccordance with the laws and regulations in your area governing disposal of such cell types. Torecharge the battery, use approved battery chargers only. Keep the battery away from children.Power source: The charging unit and any other charging units should be operated only from the typeof power source indicated on the marking label and are intended for indoor use only. Do not use thetravel charger or any other charging units outside or in any area exposed to the elements. Refer to theoperating instructions in this manual for more information on the battery and power supply.Do not overload wall outlets, extension cords, or integral convenience receptacles as this may result ina risk of fire or electric shock. To reduce the risk of damage to the cord or the plug, pull the plug ratherthan the cord when you disconnect the apparatus from the wall outlet or convenience receptacle.Liquids and foreign objects: Never push objects of any kind into the handheld or any accessoriesthrough openings as they may short-out parts and this may result in a fire or electric shock. Do not usethe handheld or any accessories near water (for example near a bathtub, or a sink, in a wet basement,near a swimming pool, etc.). Never spill liquid of any kind on the handheld or any accessories.Disconnect the cradle from the computer and unplug the travel charger from the electrical outlet beforecleaning either the handheld, cradle or the travel charger.Stability: Do not place the handheld, charging unit, or any accessories on any unstable surface, such asa cart, stand, tripod, bracket, or table. It may fall, thereby potentially causing serious injury to a child oradult, and/or serious damage to the handheld, charging unit, or any accessories. Take care when usingthe handheld with any charging units to place the charging unit in a secure and stable spot and routethe power cord in a way that reduces the risk of injury to others, such as by tripping or choking.Care: Do not use liquid or aerosol cleaners or solvents on or near your handheld. Clean only with a drycloth.High heat: The handheld and any accessories should be situated away from any heat sources, such asradiators, heat registers, stoves, or other apparatus (including amplifiers) that produce heat.Power Cord: Protect the power cord from being walked on or pinched particularly at plugs,convenience receptacles, and the point where they exit from the apparatus. Unplug this apparatusduring lightning storms or when unused for long periods of time. Service: Disconnect the cradle from the computer and unplug the travel charger from the electricaloutlet and refer the handheld, charging unit, and any accessories for service to qualified servicepersonnel if: •the power supply cord, plug, or connector to the handheld is damaged•liquid has been spilled or objects have fallen into the handheld, charging unit, or any electrical accessories•the handheld, charging unit, or accessory has been exposed to rain or water•the handheld, charging unit, or accessory becomes very hot to the touch•the handheld, charging unit, or accessory has been dropped or damaged in any way•the handheld, charging unit, or accessory does not operate normally by following the instructions contained in this guide Warning: The battery may present a fire or chemical burn hazard if mistreated. Do not disassemble, crush, puncture, or heat the battery above 60 degrees Celsius. Do not allow metal objects to contact the battery terminals. When it is ON, itreceives and also sends out radio frequency (RF) signals. Use of accessories that are not approved by RIM in conjunction with yourhandheld may violate FCC and IC RF exposure guidelines and may void your warranty.SPECIFIC ABSORPTION RATE DATATHIS MODEL WIRELESS HANDHELD MEETS GOVERNMENT REQUIREMENTS FOREXPOSURE TO RADIO WAVES.Your wireless handheld is a radio transmitter and receiver. It is designed and manufactured not toexceed the emission limits for exposure to radio frequency (RF) energy set by the FederalCommunications Commission (FCC) of the U.S. Government and Industry Canada of the CanadianGovernment (IC). These limits are part of comprehensive guidelines and establish permitted levels ofRF energy for the general population. The guidelines are based on standards that were developed byindependent scientific organizations through periodic and thorough evaluation of scientific studies.The standards include a substantial safety margin designed to assure the safety of all persons,regardless of age and health.Warning: To reduce the risk of fire or electric shock, do not expose the handheld or any accessories to rain or moisture. Adjust only those controls that are covered in this manual. An improper adjustment of other controls may result in damage and will often require extensive work by a qualified technician to restore the handheld, charging unit, or accessory to its normal operation.
7Important safety informationThe exposure standard for wireless mobile handhelds employs a unit of measurement known as theSpecific Absorption Rate, or SAR. The SAR limit set by the FCC/IC is 1.6W/kg.* Tests for SAR areconducted using standard operating positions specified by the FCC/IC with the handheld transmittingat its highest certified power level in all tested frequency bands. Although the SAR is determined at thehighest certified power level, the actual SAR level of the handheld while operating can be well belowthe maximum value. This is because the handheld is designed to operate at multiple power levels so asto use only the power required to reach the network. In general, the closer you are to a wireless basestation antenna, the lower the power output. Before a wireless handheld model is available for sale to the public, it must be tested and certified tothe FCC/IC that it does not exceed the limit established by the government-adopted requirement forsafe exposure. The tests are performed in positions and locations (e.g., body worn inside shirt pocketand with holster) as required by the FCC/IC for each model. The highest SAR value for this modelhandheld when tested for use inside a shirt pocket is 1.53 W/kg and when worn on the body withholster, as described in this user guide, is 0.43 W/kg. (Body-worn measurements differ among wirelesshandheld and phone models, depending upon available accessories and FCC/IC requirements). Whilethere may be differences between the SAR levels of various wireless devices and at various positions,they all meet the government requirement for safe exposure. The FCC has granted an Equipment Authorization for this model handheld with all reported SARlevels evaluated as in compliance with the FCC RF emission guidelines. The standard incorporates a substantialmargin of safety to give additional protection for the public and to account for any variations inmeasurements.The long-term characteristics or the possible physiological effects of Radio Frequency Electromagneticfields have not been evaluated by Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL).ANTENNA CAREUse only the supplied integral antenna. Unauthorized antenna, modifications, or attachments coulddamage the handheld and may violate FCC regulations.EFFICIENT USEEven though this handheld demonstrates compliance with FCC RF exposure requirements, RIMrecommends minimizing contact with the left side of the RIM 967 Wireless Handheld where thetransmit antenna is located. Minimizing contact to this area will also improve call quality and reducetransmit power, effectively conserving battery life.AIRCRAFT SAFETYFederal Aviation Administration (FAA)/FCC regulations prohibit using the radio of your handheldwhile in the air. Switch your handheld radio OFF before boarding an aircraft. The effect of the use ofyour handheld’s radio in an aircraft is unknown. Such use may affect aircraft instrumentation,communication and performance, may disrupt the network, may otherwise be dangerous to theoperation of the aircraft, and may be illegal. All other applications of your handheld may be used inaccordance with airline regulations for electronic devices.
