The interface cable is not a standard accessory. Please purchase the appropriate interface cable for the
interface you intend to use (Parallel or USB).
■USB interface cable
Please make sure you use a USB 2.0 interface cable that is no longer than 6 feet (2.0 meters).
Do not connect the USB cable to a non-powered hub or a Mac® keyboard.
When you use a USB cable, make sure you connect it to the USB port of your computer and not to a
USB port on a keyboard or a non-powered USB hub.
■Parallel interface cable
Please make sure you use a Parallel interface cable that is no longer than 6 feet (2.0 meters).
Use a shielded interface cable that is IEEE 1284-compliant.
When you move the machine, grasp the side handholds that are under the scanner. Do NOT carry the
machine by holding it at the bottom.

Setting Up the Machine
Do NOT connect the interface cable.
Connecting the interface cable is
done when installing the driver.
1Open the front cover of the machine.
2Unpack the drum unit assembly.
3Gently rock it from side to side several times
to distribute the toner evenly inside the
assembly.
4Put the drum unit assembly into the
machine.
5Close the front cover of the machine.

1Pull the paper tray completely out of the
machine.
2While pressing the paper guide release
lever, slide the adjusters to fit the paper
size. Check that the guides are firmly in the
slots.
3Fan the stack of paper well to avoid paper
jams and misfeeds.
4Put paper in the paper tray.
Check that the paper is flat in the tray and
below the maximum paper mark.
5Put the paper tray firmly back in to the
machine and unfold the output tray support
flap before you use the machine.

For Legal size paper, press in the inside
latches and pull out the back of the paper
tray.
For details on supported paper specifications,
see “About paper” in Chapter 1 of the User’s

Make sure that you have completed the instructions from Step 1 “Setting Up
the Machine” on pages 4 - 6.
1Turn off and unplug the machine from the
AC outlet and disconnect it from your
computer, if you already connected an
interface cable.
2Turn on your computer.
(For Windows® 2000 Professional/XP, you
must be logged on with Administrator
rights.)
3Insert the supplied CD-ROM for Windows®
into your CD-ROM drive. If the model name
screen appears, select your machine. If the
language screen appears, select your
language.
4The CD-ROM main menu will appear.
Click Install MFL-Pro Suite.
5After reading and accepting the ScanSoft®
PaperPort® 9.0SE License Agreement, click
Yes.
6The installation of PaperPort® 9.0SE will
automatically start and is followed by the
installation of MFL-Pro Suite.
7When the Brother MFL-Pro Suite Software
License Agreement window appears, read
the agreement, then click Yes if you agree
to its terms.
8Select Local Connection, and then click
Next.
The installation will continue.
For USB Interface Cable Users

Please close any applications running before
installing the MFL-Pro Suite.

It will take a few seconds for the installation
screen to appear.
The installation of the Brother drivers will
automatically start. The screens appear one
after another, please wait, it will take a few
seconds for all the screens to appear.

displayed, make your selection and follow

EFor Windows® 2000 Professional users, if
the Digital Signature Not Found dialog
boxes appear, click Yes to install the driver.
The MFL-Pro Suite, Printer driver and
Scanner driver have been installed and

again using Repair MFL-Pro Suite from the
CD-ROM main menu.

Print/Scan Server and follow the instruction.
2If you are using Personal Firewall software,
disable it. Once you are sure that you can
print, re-start your Personal Firewall
software. Close any applications running
before installing the MFL-Pro Suite.
3Plug in the power cord and turn on the
machine.
4Turn on your computer.
(For Windows® 2000 Professional/XP/
Windows NT® 4.0, you must be logged on
with Administrator rights.)
5Insert the supplied CD-ROM for Windows®
into your CD-ROM drive. If the model name
screen appears, select your machine. If the
language screen appears, select your

Next.
AThe installation of the Brother drivers will
automatically start. The installation screens
appear one after another. Please wait, it will
take a few seconds for all the screens to
appear.
DO NOT try to cancel any of the
screens during this installation.
BIf the machine is configured for your
network, select your machine from the list
and then click Next.
If the machine is not yet configured for use
on your network, the Configure IP Address
window will appear. Enter the IP address
information appropriate to your network by
following the on-screen instructions.
CWhen the On-Line Registration screen is
displayed, make your selection and follow
the on-screen instructions.
DWhen the following screen appears, click
Finish and wait as the PC restarts Windows
and continues the installation.
(For Windows® 2000 Professional/XP/
Windows NT® 4.0, you must be logged on
with Administrator rights.)
The MFL-Pro Suite, Network Printer
driver, Network Scanner driver have
been installed and the installation is
now complete.
This window will not appear if there is only
one of this Brother model connected on the
network, it will be selected automatically.
■For Network installations, the Repair
MFL-Pro Suite selection from the main
menu is not supported.
■Network Scanning is not supported in
Windows NT® 4.0.

to install the printer and scanner drivers. If
the language screen appears, select your
language.
5Click MFL-Pro Suite to install.
6Follow the on-screen instructions, and
restart your Macintosh®.
7Connect the USB interface cable to your
Macintosh®, and then connect it to the
machine.
DO NOT connect the machine to a
USB port on a keyboard or a non

8Plug in the power cord and turn on the
machine.
For USB Interface Cable Users

9From the Apple® menu, open the Chooser.
0Click the Brother Laser icon.
On the right side of the Chooser, select the
machine to which you want to print.
Close the Chooser.
The MFL-Pro Suite, Printer driver and
Scanner driver have been installed.
ATo install Presto!® PageManager®, click the
Presto! PageManager icon and follow the
on-screen instructions.
Presto!® PageManager® has been
installed and the installation is now
complete.
The ControlCenter2.0 is not supported in Mac
OS® 9.1 to 9.2.
You can easily scan, share and organize
photos and documents using Presto!®
PageManager®.

the Machine” on pages 4 - 6.
1Disconnect the machine from the power
socket and from your Macintosh®, if you
already connected an interface cable.
2Turn on your Macintosh®.
3Insert the supplied CD-ROM for Macintosh®
into your CD-ROM drive.
4Double-click the Start Here OSX icon to
install the printer driver, Scanner driver and
Remote Setup program. If the language
screen appears, select your language.
5Click MFL-Pro Suite to install.
6Follow the on-screen instructions, and
restart your Macintosh®.
7After the DeviceSelector window appears,
connect the USB interface cable to your
Macintosh® and then to the machine.
For USB Interface Cable Users
For Mac OS® X 10.2.4 or greater
For Mac OS® X 10.2.0 to 10.2.3 user, please
upgrade to Mac OS® X 10.2.4 or greater.
(The latest information for Mac OS® X, please
visit at: http://solutions.brother.com)
The DeviceSelector window will not appear if
you have also connected a USB interface
cable to the machine before restarting your
Macintosh®or if you are overwriting a
previously installed version of the Brother
software. If you encounter this problem
continue with the installation skipping step 9
and then see the Software User’s Guide for
details on selecting which machine the
ControlCenter2.0 will connect with.

ESelect DCP-XXXX (XXXX is your model
name), and then click Add.
FSelect Quit Printer Setup Utility from the
Printer Setup Utility menu.
The MFL-Pro Suite, Printer driver,
Scanner driver and ControlCenter2.0
have been installed.
GTo install Presto!® PageManager®, click the
Presto! PageManager icon and follow the
on-screen instructions.
Presto!® PageManager® has been
installed and the installation is now
complete.
For USB Interface Cable Users
When Presto!® PageManager® is installed
OCR capability is added to the Brother
ControlCenter2.0. You can also easily scan,
share, and organize photos and documents
using Presto!® PageManager®.

The DeviceSelector window will not appear if
you have also connected a USB interface

for details on selecting which machine the
ControlCenter2.0 will connect with.

Scanner driver and ControlCenter2.0
have been installed.
HTo install Presto!® PageManager®, click the
Presto! PageManager icon and follow the
on-screen instructions.
Presto!® PageManager® has been
installed and the installation is now
complete.
When Presto!® PageManager® is installed
OCR capability is added to the Brother
ControlCenter2.0. You can also easily scan,
share, and organize photos and documents
using Presto!® PageManager®.

If you are going to connect the machine to your wireless
network, purchase the optional Wireless print/scan server
(802.11b). The NC-2200w can be connected to the USB
interface port of your machine.

network, buy the optional Network device. The NC-2100p can
