 DANGERIf the rechargeable battery pack is incorrectly replaced,there is a danger of an explosion. The battery pack con-tains a small amount of harmful substances. To avoidpossible injury:Replace only with a battery of the type recommendedby IBM, or an equivalent.Keep the battery pack away from fire.Do not expose it to water or rain.Do not attempt to disassemble it.Do not short-circuit it.Keep it away from children.Do not put it in trash that is disposed of in landfills.When disposing the battery, comply with local ordi-nances or regulations and your company's safety stand-ards.  DANGERThere is a danger of an explosion if the backup batteryis incorrectly replaced. Replace only with a battery of thesame type.The lithium battery (IBM P/N 02K6694 UL-recognizedcomponent [file no. MH12568]) contains lithium and canexplode if it is not properly handled or disposed of.To avoid possible injury or death, do not: (1) throw orimmerse the battery into water, (2) allow it to heat tomore than 100°C (212°F), or (3) attempt to repair or dis-assemble it. Dispose of it as required by local ordi-nances or regulations and your company's safetystandards.CAUTION:The fluorescent lamp in the liquid crystal display (LCD) containsmercury. Do not put it in trash that is disposed of in landfills.Dispose of it as required by local ordinances or regulations.The LCD is made of glass, and rough handling or dropping thecomputer can cause the LCD to break. If the LCD breaks andthe internal fluid gets into your eyes or on your hands, imme-diately wash the affected areas with water for at least 15minutes; if any symptoms are present after washing, getmedical care.CAUTION:To reduce the risk of fire, use only No. 26 AWG or cable with ahigher rating.viii
 The CD- or DVD-ROM drive of the ThinkPad i Series 1200/1300computer is a laser product. The CD-or DVD-ROM drive has an internal, Class 1, 0.5-milliwatt, aluminumgallium-arsenide laser that operates at a wavelength of 760 to 810nanometers. The design of the laser system and the CD- orDVD-ROM drive ensures that there is no exposure to laser radiationabove a Class 1 level during normal operation, user maintenance, orservicing.ix
 Some drives contain an embedded Class 3A laser diode. Note thiswarning:DANGEREmits visible and invisible laser radiation when open.Avoid direct eye exposure. Do not stare into the beam orview it directly with optical instruments.Modem safety informationTo reduce the risk of fire, electrical shock, or injury when using tele-phone equipment, always follow basic safety precautions, such as:Never install telephone wiring during a lightning storm.Never install telephone jacks in wet locations unless the jack isspecifically designed for wet locations.Never touch uninsulated telephone wires or terminals unless thetelephone line has been disconnected at the network interface.Use caution when installing or modifying telephone lines.Avoid using a telephone (other than a cordless type) during anelectrical storm.There may be a remote risk of electric shock from lightning.Do not use the telephone to report a gas leak in the vicinity ofthe leak.x

  Important tipsBe careful about where you work.Do not leave the base of your computer in contact with your lapor any part of your body for an extended period when the com-puter is functioning or when the battery is charging. Your com-puter dissipates some heat during normal operation. This heat isa function of the level of system activity and battery charge level.Extended contact with your body, even through clothing, couldcause discomfort or, eventually, a skin burn.Place liquids away from your computer to avoid spills, and keepyour computer away from water (to avoid the danger of electricalshock).Store packing materials safely out of the reach of children toprevent the risk of suffocation from plastic bags.Keep your computer away from magnets, activated cellularphones, electrical appliances, or speakers (within 13cm/5 in.).Avoid subjecting your computer to extreme temperatures (below5°C/41°F or above 35°C/95°F).Be gentle with your computer.Avoid placing any objects (including paper) between the displayand the keyboard or under the keyboard.Do not drop, bump, scratch, twist, hit, vibrate, push or placeheavy objects on your computer, display, or external devices.Your computer display is designed to be opened and used at anangle slightly greater than 90 degrees. Do not open the displaybeyond 135 degrees, as this might damage the computer hinge.Carry your computer properly.When picking up your open computer, hold it by the bottom. Donot pick up or hold your computer by the display.Be sure your computer is in standby or hibernation mode, orturned off, before moving it. Important tips Use a quality carrying case that provides adequate cushion andprotection. Do not pack your computer in a tightly packedsuitcase or bag.Before moving your computer, be sure to remove any media,turn off attached devices, and disconnect cords and cables.Handle storage media and drives properly.Avoid inserting diskettes at an angle and attaching multiple orloose diskette labels, as these can lodge in the diskette drive.Do not touch the surface of a CD or DVD or the lens on the CD-or DVD-ROM tray.Wait until you hear the CD- or DVD-ROM click into the centerpivot of the CD- or DVD-ROM drive before closing the CD- orDVD-ROM trayWhen replacing your hard disk drive, or installing an externaldiskette drive, follow the instructions shipped with your hardware,and apply pressure only where needed on the device. SeeAccess ThinkPad, your on-board help system, for information onreplacing your hard disk drive (open Access ThinkPad bypressing the ThinkPad button).Take care in setting passwords.Remember your passwords. If you forget a hard disk pass-word, you must have your hard disk drive replaced.If you are an administrator, remember that setting a setup pass-word can prevent unauthorized initialization or changing of harddisk drive passwords.Other important tipsYour computer can use only an analog telephone network,or public-switched telephone network (PSTN). Do not connectthe modem to a PBX (private branch exchange) or any otherdigital telephone extension line because this could damage yourmodem. Analog phone lines are often used in homes, whiledigital phone lines are often used in hotels or office buildings. Important tips Your computer might have both an Ethernet connector and amodem connector. If so, be sure to connect your communicationcable to the correct one, so your connector is not damaged. SeeAccess ThinkPad, your on-board help system, for information onthe location of these connectors (press the ThinkPad button toopen Access ThinkPad).Only an authorized IBM ThinkPad repair technician should disas-semble and repair your computer.Do not modify or tape the latches to keep the display open orclosed.Take care not to turn your computer over while the ac adapter isplugged in. This could break the adapter plug.If you replace the hard disk drive in your computer, reinstall theplastic cover.Store your external diskette drive in an appropriate container orpackaging when it is not being used.Register your ThinkPad products with IBM (refer to the Webpage: http://www.pc.ibm.com/register). This can help authori-ties return your computer to you if it is lost or stolen. Registeringyour computer also enables IBM to notify you about possibleupgrades.Cleaning your computerOccasionally clean your computer as follows:Use a soft cloth moistened with nonalkaline detergent to wipe theexterior of the computer.Avoid spraying cleaner directly on the display or the keyboard.Gently wipe the display with a dry, soft cloth.Extending the usefulness of the batteryThe amount of battery power consumed by your computer dependson such conditions as the frequency of use, the operating temper-ature, and the period in storage (if unused). Important tips Do not recharge the battery pack until all of its power is used.Recharging a battery pack that is not completely discharged canshorten battery life.Once you start charging the battery pack, do not use it until it isfully charged.Whenever possible, use the ThinkPad battery power-savingmodes:  – Screen blank  – Standby  – HibernationFor more information, refer to the online user's guide.Decrease the brightness of the LCD.Use power management. Starting the BIOS Setup Utility Starting the BIOS Setup UtilityYour computer provides a program called BIOS Setup Utility, whichenables you to configure your computer:System Information: View information about the computer.Basic System Settings: Set date and time.Startup Configuration: Set startup options.Onboard Devices Configuration: Set device resource settings.System Security: Set a password.Load Default Settings: Load the default settings for all parame-ters.To start the BIOS Setup Utility, do as follows:1. Remove any diskette from the external diskette drive, andremove any disc from the CD- or DVD-ROM drive; then turn offthe computer.2. Turn on the computer.3. While the ThinkPad logo is being displayed, the following linesappear:Press F1 for IBM BIOS Setup UtilityPress F12 to choose temporary boot devicePress F1.The BIOS Setup Utility menu appears:   Chapter 2.   Using passwordsTo make sure only authorized persons can work on your computer,you can set different kinds of passwords. Prospective users will haveto know the proper passwords in order to access your computer ordata.You can set the following passwords on your computer: Power-on password Screen-saver password Hard-disk password Windows password Setup password Network password Power-on passwordYou can set a power-on password to protect your computer againstaccess by unauthorized users.If you set a power-on password, the password prompt appears onthe screen when you turn on the computer. You must enter thecorrect password to start using the computer.Note: If you forget your power-on password, you cannot reset it. Youmust take the computer to an IBM reseller or IBM marketingrepresentative to have the password cancelled. Proof of pur-chase is required, and an additional charge might be requiredfor the service.To establish a power-on password, refer to the on-board helpsystem, Access ThinkPad. Screen-saver passwordYou can set a screen-saver password. Using passwords Note: The screen-saver password does not thoroughly protect yourcomputer from unauthorized users. An unauthorized usercould turn the computer off and then on to restart Windowswithout knowing your screen-saver password.To set a screen-saver password, refer to the on-board help system,Access ThinkPad. Hard-disk passwordThe hard disk password provides an extra measure of security. Evenif you set a power-on password, another user can remove the harddisk drive in your computer and put it in a different computer toaccess your data. If you set a hard disk password, however, anotherperson cannot access the data on your hard disk without knowingthe password. It provides the following features:You need to type the hard disk password at startup.If the hard disk drive is moved to another computer, the harddisk password must be typed at startup. Therefore, unauthorizedusers cannot access your hard disk even if the drive is removedfrom the computer.The hard disk password is required when the computer resumesfrom hibernation mode.Note: If an incorrect hard disk password is entered three times, thesystem halts.  Attention If you forget your hard disk password, you can no longer accessthe hard disk. The password cannot be reset and you will lose alldata and files on the hard disk. To use the computer, you willneed to replace the hard disk. This replacement will incurexpenses for parts and labor. Windows passwordWhen you start your ThinkPad computer and the Windows operatingsystem opens, Windows requires you to enter a user ID and a pass-word.   Chapter 3. Protecting your computer 17
Using passwords To set a Windows password, refer to the on-board help system,Access ThinkPad. Setup password The setup password protects the system information stored in theBIOS Utility so that without knowing the password, nobody canchange the configuration of the computer.  Attention If you forget your setup password, you cannot reset it. You musttake the computer to an IBM reseller or IBM marketing represen-tative to have the password cancelled. Proof of purchase isrequired, and an additional charge might be required for theservice.To establish a setup password, refer to the on-board helpsystem, Access ThinkPad.  Replacing the hard disk driveYou can increase the storage capacity of your computer by replacingthe hard disk drive with one of greater capacity. You can purchase anew hard disk drive from your IBM reseller or IBM marketing repre-sentative.Note: Replace the hard disk drive only if you upgrade it or have itrepaired. The connectors and bay of the hard disk drive werenot designed for frequent changes, or drive swapping.Attention: Handling a hard disk drive:Do not drop the drive or subject it to physical shocks.Do not apply pressure to the cover of the drive.Do not touch the connector.Notes:1. The drive is very sensitive. Incorrect handling can cause damageand permanent loss of data on the hard disk.2. Before removing the hard-disk drive, make a backup copy of allthe information on the hard disk, and then turn the computer off.3. Refer to “Features”on page 8.If these items are correct, have the computer serviced.A message "critical low-battery error" appears,and the computer imme-diately turns off.The battery power is getting low. Connect the ac adapter to the computer, orreplace the battery with a fully charged one.When you take action toreturn from standbymode, the computerdisplay remains blank.Check if an external monitor was connected before the computer entered standbymode. Do not disconnect the external monitor while the computer is inhibernation mode. If no external monitor is attached when the computerresumes, the LCD remains blank and output is not displayed. This prevents your computer from entering standby mode even after atimeout. To enable the computer to enter standby mode, do the following:  1. Click Start.2. Move the cursor to Settings and Control Panel.3. Click Control Panel, and then double-click System.4. Click the Device Manager tab.5. Click the + mark of CD-ROM.6. Double-click the name of the CD- or DVD-ROM.7. Click the Settings tab.8. Clear the Auto insert notification check box.Windows 98 no longer detects the insertion of a CD or DVD automatically.When creating ahibernation file, SleepManager gives off a"Not Enough Space forAllocation" message.Sleep Manager needs enough, contiguous hard disk drive space to create andmanage the hibernation file.Make sure the hard disk drive space is sufficient for Sleep Manager's require-ments. This can be viewed from the Sleep Manager main screen. If there are stillproblems, there might not be enough contiguous free space to create thehibernation file. Testing your computer Testing your computerIf you have a problem with your computer, you can test it by usingPC-Doctor. To run PC-Doctor, do as follows:  1. Click Start.2. Move the cursor to Programs and then to PC-Doctor forWindows.3. Click PC-Doctor for Windows.4. Choose either the Quick Test or the standard test.  Attention Running the Quick Test set can take 10 minutes or longer. Makesure you have time to run the entire test; do not interrupt the testwhile it is running.The Quick Test runs many tests of critical hardware components, butit does not run all of the diagnostic tests in PC-Doctor. Backing up your system Backing up your systemBacking up your system configurationWhen you add software applications or devices to your computer, theinstallation process can change the computer registry and configura-tion.If your computer does not work properly after you add applications ordevices, you need to restore the previous configuration.You can use ConfigSafe (for Windows 98 and Windows 2000) orSystem Restore (for Windows Millenium Edition) to save the config-uration before you make changes. Then if something goes wrong,use ConfigSafe or System Restore to restore the system registry andconfiguration files.For Windows 98 or Windows 2000:To capture a snapshot of your system configuration with ConfigSafe:  1. Backing up your system To capture a snapshot of your system configuration, or to restoreyour configuration to an earlier snapshot using Windows Me, clickStart —> Programs —> Accessories —> System Tools —>System Restore and follow the on-screen instructions.Backing up your dataHard disks are reliable data storage devices. Even so, it is wise toprotect yourself against accidental data loss or the unlikely event of ahard-disk malfunction by backing up your important files regularly.For Windows 98 or Windows 2000:To back up data, start the backup application as follows:  1. Click Start.2. Move the cursor to Programs, Accessories, System Tools, andBackup.  3. Click Backup.Make sure that the Create a new backup job button is marked inthe Microsoft Backup window.Click OK.
