PREPARATION

•Thoroughlyinspecttheareawherethe equipmentis to beused.

Removeall stones,sticks,wire,bones,toys andother foreign

objectswhichcould betrippedoveror pickedupandthrownby

the blade.Thrownobjectscan causeseriouspersonalinjury.

• Alwayswear safetyglassesor safetygogglesduringoperation

andwhile performingan adjustmentor repairto protectyoureyes.

Thrownobjectswhichricochetcancauseseriousinjuryto the

eyes.

• Wearsturdy,rough-soledworkshoesandclose-fittingslacks

and shirts.Shirtsand pantsthatcoverthe armsandlegsand

steel-toedshoesare recommended.Neveroperatethis machine

inbarefeet,sandals,slipperyor lightweight(e.g.canvas)shoes.

• Neverattemptto makeanyadjustmentswhilethe engineis

running,exceptwherespecificallyrecommendedinthe operator's

manual.

SAFE HANDLING OF GASOLINE:

Toavoidpersonalinjuryorpropertydamageuse extremecarein

handlinggasoline.Gasolineis extremelyflammableandthe vaporsare

explosive.Seriouspersonalinjurycanoccurwhengasolineis spilled

on yourselforyour clotheswhichcan ignite. Washyourskinand

changeclothesimmediately.

• Useonly anapprovedgasolinecontainer.

• Neverfill containersinsidea vehicleoron a truckortrailer bed

witha plasticliner.Alwaysplacecontainerson the groundaway

fromyourvehiclebeforefilling.

• Removegas-poweredequipmentfromthe truckortrailerand

refuelit onthe ground.Ifthisis notpossible,then refuelsuch

equipmenton atrailerwitha portablecontainer,ratherthanfrom

a gasolinedispensernozzle.

• Keepthe nozzleincontactwiththe rim of the fueltankor

containeropeningat all timesuntilfuelingis complete.Donot use

a nozzlelock-opendevice.

• Extinguishallcigarettes,cigars,pipesandother sourcesof

ignition.

• Neverfuel machineindoorsbecauseflammablevaporswill

accumulatein the area.

• Neverremovegas capor addfuel whileengineis hotor running.

Allowengineto coolat leasttwo minutesbeforerefueling.

• Neveroverfill fueltank. Fill tankto nomorethan1/2inchbelow

bottomof filler neckto providefor fuelexpansion.

• Replacegasolinecapandtightensecurely.

• Ifgasolineis spilled,wipe it off theengineandequipment.Move

machineto anotherarea.Wait5 minutesbeforestarting engine.

• Neverstorethe machineorfuel containernearanopenflame,

sparkor pilotlight as ona waterheater,spaceheater,furnace,

clothesdryeror othergas appliances.

• To reducefire hazard,keeplawnedgerfreeof grass,leaves,or

otherdebrisbuild-up.Cleanupoil orfuel spillageand removeany

fuel soakeddebris.

• Allowa lawnedgerto cool at leastfive (5) minutesbeforestoring

OPERATION

•Do not puthandsorfeetnear rotatingparts.Contactwiththe

rotatingbladecan amputatehandsandfeet.

Neveroperatewithoutbladeguard,debrisshieldandblade

controlhandlein placeandworking.

Neveroperatewithdamagedsafetydevices.Failureto do so,can

resultinpersonalinjury.

Neverrunanengineindoorsor ina poorlyventilatedarea. Engine

exhaustcontainscarbonmonoxide,anodorlessanddeadlygas.

Do notoperatemachinewhileunderthe influenceof alcoholor

drugs.

Mufflerandenginebecomehotandcan causea burn.Do not

touch.

Neveroperatethismachinewithoutgoodvisibilityor light.Always

be sureof yourfootingandkeepa firmholdonthe handles.Walk,

neverrun.

Do notoperatethis machineif it has beendroppedor damaged.

by guards.

• Alwaysstopenginewhenedgingortrimmingis delayedor when

transportingmachinefromonelocationto another.

• Neverleavea runningmachineunattended.Stop theengine,

disconnectsparkplugwireandgroundagainstthe engineto

preventunintendedstarting.

• Only usepartsandaccessoriesmadefor thismachineby the

CHILDREN

Tragicaccidentscan occurif the operatoris not alertto the presence

MAINTENANCE & STORAGE

•Neverrunanengineindoorsorin a poorlyventilatedarea.Engine

exhaustcontainscarbonmonoxide,an odorlessanddeadlygas.

Beforecleaning,repairing,or inspecting,makecertainthe

bladeandall movingpartshavestopped.Disconnectthe spark

plugwireand groundagainstthe engineto preventunintended

starting.

Checkthe bladeandenginemountingboltsat frequentintervals

for propertightness.Also,visuallyinspectbladefor damage(e.g.,

bent,cracked,worn) Replacebladewiththe originalequipment

rnanufacture's(O.E.M.)bladeonly,listedinthis manual."Useof

partswhichdonot meetthe originalequipmentspecificationsmay

leadto improperperformanceandcompromisesafety!"

Lawnedgerbladesare sharpandcan cut. Wrapthe bladeor

weargloves,and useextracautionwhenservicingthem.

Keepallnuts, bolts,and screwstightto besurethe equipmentis

in safeworkingcondition.

Nevertamperwith safetydevices.Checktheir properoperation

regularly.

• Afterstrikinga foreignobject, stopthe engine,disconnectthe

sparkplugwireand groundagainstthe engine.Thoroughly

inspectthe lawnedgerfor anydamage.Repairthe damage

beforestartingandoperatingthe lawnedger.

Neverattemptto makea wheeladjustmentwhilethe engineis

running.

Manycomponentson yournew edgercan wearwithcontinued

use. Forsafetyprotection,frequentlycheckall edgercomponents

andreplaceimmediatelywithoriginalequipmentmanufacturer's

(O.E.M.)partsonly,listedin thismanual."Useof partswhich

donot meetthe originalequipmentspecificationsmayleadto

improperperformanceandcompromisesafety!"

Do notchangetheenginegovernorsettingor overspeedthe

engine.Thegovernorcontrolsthe maximumsafeoperatingspeed

of the engine.

Maintainor replacesafetyandinstructionlabels,as necessary.

Observeproperdisposallawsand regulationsfor usedgas,

oil, etc..Improperdisposalof fluidsandmaterialscan harmthe

environment.

Accordingto the ConsumerProductsSafetyCommission(CPSC)

andthe U.S.EnvironmentalProtectionAgency(EPA),thisproduct

hasan Average UsefulLifeof seven(7)years,or 70hoursof

operation.At the endof theAverage UsefulLifehavethe machine

inspectedannuallybyan authorizedservicedealerto ensurethat

allmechanicalandsafetysystemsareworkingproperlyand not

wornexcessively.Failureto do so can resultinaccidents,injuries

ordeath.

DO NOT MODIFY ENGINE

Toavoidseriousinjuryordeath,donot modifyenginein anyway.

Tamperingwiththe governorsettingcan leadto a runawayengineand

causeit to operateat unsafespeeds.Nevertamperwithfactorysetting

of enginegovernor.

NOTICE REGARDING EMISSIONS

EngineswhicharecertifiedtocomplywithCaliforniaandfederal

EPAemissionregulationsfor SORE(SmallOff RoadEquipment)are

certifiedto operateon regularunleadedgasoline,and mayinclude

the followingemissioncontrolsystems:EngineModification(EM),

OxidizingCatalyst(OC),SecondaryAirInjection(SAI)and ThreeWay

Catalyst(TWO)if so equipped.

SPARK ARRESTOR

Thismachineis equippedwithan internalcombustionengineand

shouldnotbe usedonor nearanyunimprovedforest-covered,

brushcoveredor grass-coveredlandunlessthe engine'sexhaust

systemis equippedwitha sparkarrestermeetingapplicablelocal or

statelaws(if any)

Ifa sparkarresteris used,it shouldbemaintainedin effectiveworking

orderby theoperator.Inthe Stateof Californiathe aboveis required

bylaw (Section4442of the CaliforniaPublicResourcesCode).Other

statesmayhavesimilarlaws. Federallawsapplyonfederallands.

A sparkarresterfor the muffleris availablethroughyournearestSears

PartsandRepairServiceCenter.

ASSEMBLY

Handle

Removeanddiscardanypackagingcardboardthatmaybe present

betweenthe upperhandleandthe lowerhandle.

1. Pivotthe upperhandleupwarduntilit snapsinto place.See

Figure1.

2. Tightenthe handknobs,whichare locatedon boththe leftand

rightsidesof the handle.

Starter Rope

1. Locatethe ropeguidefoundon the rightside of the upperhandle.

Loosen,but do NOTremove,the wing knobwhichsecuresthe

ropeguideto the upperhandle.SeeFigure2.

2. Standbehindthe edgerandholdthe bladecontrolagainstthe

upperhandle.

3. Gentlypullthe starterropeout of the engine.

TheedgerbladeWILLrotatewhenthe starterropeis pulled.

NOTE:Thestarter ropewill not pullout of the engineunlessthe blade

control(referto Figure2) is depressedagainstthe upperhandle.

4. Slipthe starterropethroughthe top of the ropeguide. Retighten

the wing knobwhichsecuresthe ropeguideto the upperhandle.

ADJUSTMENTS

Bevel Adjustment

Theangleof the edgerbladecanbe adjustedby placingthe bevel

adjustmentinoneof three positionsfor edging.SeeFigure3.

SET-UP

Gas & Oil Fill=Up

Useextremecautionwhenhandlinggasoline.Gasolineis extremely

flammableand thevaporsare explosive.Neverfuel the machine

indoorsor whilethe engineis hotor running.Extinguishcigarettes,

How To Check/Add Oil

Beforeaddingorcheckingthe oil

• Placeenginelevel.

• Cleanthe oilfill areaof any debris.

1. Removethe dipstick(A)andwipe witha cleancloth. See

Figure4.

Insertandtightenthedipstick.

Removethe dipstickandcheckthe oillevel.It shouldbeat the

FULLmark(B)onthe dipstick.

Iflow,addoilslowlyinto theengineoil fill (C). Do notoverfill.After

addingoil, waitoneminuteandthen recheckthe oillevel.

Replaceandtightenthe dipstick.

FUEL RECOMMENDATIONS

Fuelmustmeettheserequirements:

• Clean,fresh,unleadedgasoline.

• A minimumof 87 octane/87AKI (91RON). Highaltitudeuse,see

below.

• Gasolinewithupto 10%ethanol(gasohol)or upto 15%MTBE

(methyltertiarybutylether)is acceptable.

l Do not such E85.Do not mixoil in

use unapprovedgasolines, as

gasolineor modifythe engineto runon alternatefuels.Thiswill

damagetheenginecomponentsandvoidthe enginewarranty.

Toprotectthe fuel systemfromgumformation,mixa fuel stabilizer

intothe fuel.SeeStorage.Allfuel is notthe same.If startingor

performanceproblemsoccur,changefuel providersorchangebrands.

Thisengineis certifiedto operateongasoline.Theemissionscontrol

systemfor thisengineis EM(EngineModifications).

High Altitude

At altitudesover5,000feet(1524meters),a minimum85octane/85

AKI (89RON)gasolineis acceptable.To remainemissionscompliant,

highaltitudeadjustmentisrequired.Operationwithoutthisadjustment

willcausedecreasedperformance,increasedfuel consumption,and

increasedemissions.Seea Briggs& StrattonAuthorizedDealerfor

highaltitudeadjustmentinformation.

Operationof theengineat altitudesbelow2,500feet(762meters)with

the highaltitudekitis not recommended.

HOW TO ADD FUEL

Gasolineanditsvaporsareextremelyflammableandexplosive.

Fireor explosioncan causesevereburnsordeath.

When Adding Fuel

•Turnengineoff andletenginecoolat least2 minutesbefore

removingthe fuel cap.

•Fillfuel tankoutdoorsor inwell-ventilatedarea.

•Donot overfillfuel tank.Filltankto approximately1.5inches(38

ram)belowtop of neckto allowforfuel expansion.

•Keepgasolineawayfromsparks,openflames,pilot lights,heat,

andother ignitionsources.

•Checkfuel lines,tank,cap,andfittingsfrequentlyfor cracksor

leaks.Replaceif necessary.

•Iffuel spills,waituntilit evaporatesbeforestartingengine.

1. Cleanthe fuelcap areaof dirt anddebris.Removethe fuelcap

(A, Figure5).

2. Fillthe fueltank (B)withgasoline.Toallow forexpansionof the

gasoline,do not fill abovethe bottomof the fueltankneck(C).

3. Reinstallthe fuel cap.

BLADE DEPTH CONTROL LEVER

The bladedepthcontrolleveris locatedon the rightside of the upper

handle.It is usedto controlthe depthof the cut.The furtherforward

Thestarter rope/recoilstarteris usedto start the engine.

PRIMER

the bladedepthcontrolleveris moved,the deeperintothe soil the

edgerbladewill cut.

BEVEL ADJUSTMENT LEVER

The beveladjustmentleveris locatedon the front,leftportionof the

Theprimeris usedto pumpgas into thecarburetorandaid instarting

the engine.Useit to start a coldengine,butdo not useit to restarta

warmengineaftera shortshutdown.

CURB HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT LEVER

Thecurb heightadjustmentleveris foundon the rearportionof the

edger.Whenplacedinan applicablenotch,it aidsin stabilizingthe

edgerwhileedginggrassalongacurb.

BLADE CONTROL BAIL

Locatedon the upperhandle,the bladecontrollevermustbe

edger,behindthe edgerblade.It is usedto varythe angleof the edger

bladebetweenoneof three positionsforedging/trenchingor beveled

edging.

STARTING THE ENGINE

Tostart theedger'sengine,proceedas follows:

1. Attachthe sparkplugwireto the sparkplug.Makecertainthe

metalcap onthe endof the sparkplugwireis fastenedsecurely

overthe metaltip on thesparkplug.

2. Movethe bladedepthcontrolleverbackto the STARTpositionin

theadjacent(top) notch.

3. Depressthe primerbulbthreetimes,pausingtwoto three

secondsbetweeneach push.Incold weather(below50°F/19°0),

it maybe necessaryto depressthe primerbulbfouror fivetimes.

NOTE:Usingthe primerto restarta warmengineaftera short

shutdownis usuallynot necessary.Doingso mayresultina flooded

engine.

4. Standingbehindthe edger,depressthe bladecontrolbailand

holdit againstthe upperhandlewithyour Idt hand.

EDGING

Rotatingcuttingblademaythrowobjectscausingpersonalinjury.

Keepareaclearof bystandersanddo notoperatewithoutguardsin

)lace.

Donot lowerbladeif bladeis overconcrete,asphalt,rocksorthe like.

Bade canstrke supportng surface,resut ng npersona njury or |

To beginedging,proceedas follows:

1. Moveedgerto anareato beedged,makingsure thatthe leftrear

wheelis on a hardsurfaceandthe bladeis overtheareato be

cut. SeeFigure7.

5. Withyour righthand,graspthe recoilstarterhandleandslowly

pullthe ropeoutwarduntil enginereachesthestart of its com-

pressioncycle (the ropewill pullslightlyharderat thispoint).

6. Afterslowlyallowingthe ropeto recoil,pullthe ropewitha rapid,

continuous,full arm stroke.Keepa firmgripon starterhandle

throughouttheentirestroke.

7. Allowthe starterhandleto slowlyreturnto the eyebolt.

NOTE:Ifthe enginefailsto start afterthree pulls,depressthe primer

anadditionaltwotimes beforepullingthe starterropeagain.

STOPPING THE ENGINE

Tostoptheedger'sengine,releasethebladecontrolbail.

2. Withthe bladecontrolbailsqueezedagainstthe handleinthe

operatingposition,makea passalongareato beedgedbefore

proceedingto the nextnotch.The furtherforwardthatthe blade

depthcontrolleveris moved,thedeeperor lowerthe bladewill

cut intothe ground.Severalpassesmaybe necessaryto obtain

the desireddepthof cut. Donot lowerblademorethan onedepth

notchat a timewithoutmakinga pass.

3. Forbestresults,proceedslowlyalongthe pathbeingedged.

Slowlymoveedgerbackandforththroughcuttingarea,again

makingsureto keepthe leftrearwheelon the hardsurfaceand

the bladeinthe cuttingpath,closeto but not touchingthe edgeof

the hardsurface.

Pivot Points

Lubricatethepivotpointson the bladecontrolbail,bladedepthcontrol

lever,andif applicable,the bladeadjustmentlever,andcurb height

adjustmentleverwithlightoil at leastoncea season.

Bearing Block

Lubricatethebearingblockevery25 hoursorat leastoncea season.

PREPARING THE ENGINE

Enginesstoredover30daysneedto bedrainedof fuel to prevent

deteriorationandgumfromforminginthe fuel systemor onessential

carburetorparts.If thegasolineinyourenginedeterioratesduring

storage,youmayneedto havethe carburetor,andotherfuel system

components,servicedor replaced.

1. Removeall fuel fromthe tankby runningtheengineuntilit stops.

2. Changethe engineoil.

3. Removethe sparkplugandpourapproximately1oz.(30 ml)of

cleanengineoil intothe cylinder.Pullthe recoilstarterseveral

timesto distributethe oil,and reinstallthe sparkplug.

4. Cleandebrisfromaroundthe engine,and under,around,and

behindthe muffler.Applya light filmof oilon anyareasthatare

susceptibleto rust.

5. Storeina clean,dry andwellventilatedareaawayfromany

appliancethatoperateswitha flameor pilot light,suchas a

furnace,waterheateror clothesdryer.Avoidany areawitha spark

producingelectricmotor,or wherepowertoolsareoperated.

6. if possible,avoidstorageareaswithhighhumidity.

7. Keepthe enginelevelin storage.Tiltingthe engine can cause

fuelor oil leakage.

PREPARING EDGER

if the edgerwill not beusedfor 30 daysor longer,followthe instruc-

tionsbelow.

1. Storethe edgerina dry,cleanarea.Do not storenextto any

corrosivematerials,suchas lawnfertilizer.

2. Coatthe edgerbladewithchassisgreaseto preventrustingand

corrosion.

3. Coatthe edger,especiallyanyspringsand bearingswitha light

oil or siliconespray.

4. Cleanthe exteriorof the engineandthe edger.

NOTE:Whenstoringanytypeof powerequipmentinan poorly

ventilatedormetalstorageshed,care shouldbetakento rustproofthe

equipment.

Beforeperforminganytypeof maintenance/service,disengageallcontrolsandstoptheengine.Waituntilall

movingpartshavecometo acompletestop.Disconnectsparkplugwireandgrounditagainsttheengineto
