O P E R AT I O NSelecting a CTCSS Privacy CodeCTCSS (Continous Tone Coded SquelchSystem) is an advanced tone coding systemallowing you to select one of 38 privacy codesto reduce interference from other users on thechannel. (NOTE: If you are using a privacycode, both radios must be tuned to the samechannel and privacy code to communicate.Each channel will remember the last privacycode you selected.) To select a privacy code:1. After selecting a main channel, press andrelease the MODE button. A small numberwill flash next to the channel in the LCD.2 . Push the CHANNEL SELECT button up ordown to select a privacy code. You can holdthe button up or down for fast advance.3. When your desired privacy code is displayed,p ress and release the LOCK button or pre s smode to enter selection and go to the nextf u n c t i o n .Calling Another PersonTo alert another person that you are calling:1 . P ress and release the CALL button. The otherperson will hear a 2-second ringing tone.You cannot send or receive transmissionsduring the 2-second call tone. Press and hold the ON/OFF POWER button for 2 seconds. A series of audibletones will indicate the radio is on.2. Your microTALK®is now in Standby mode,ready to receive transmissions. The radio isalways in Standby mode except when theTALK, CALL, or MODE buttons are pressed.(For Advanced Features accessed throughthe MODE button, see page 7.)Illuminating the Display1. Press and release the LIGHT/MAX RANGEbutton to illuminate the display for 10 seconds.Battery IndicatorWhen only one segment of the batteryindicator is blinking, the battery power is lowand you should rechargeyour FA-BP battery packor change your AAAalkaline batteries.Auto Battery SaveYour microTALK®radio has a unique circuitdesigned to extend battery life. If there are notransmissions within 10 seconds, the unit willautomatically switch to Battery Save modeand POWER SAVER willappear in the display.This will not affect theunit’s ability to receiveincoming transmissions.Selecting a Channel1. With the radio on, select any of the 14 channels by pushing the CHANNEL UPor CHANNEL DOWN button. O P E R AT I O NUsing the Lock FunctionThe Lock function locks the CHANNEL, MODE,and POWER buttons to prevent accidentaloperation. To use the Lock function:1. While in Standby mode, press and holdthe LOCK button for one second. The Lock icon will be visible when the unit is locked. Buttons that are NOT locked are the CALL,VOLUME, LIGHT/MAX RANGE, and TALKbuttons, which are all fully functional whilethe unit is locked.2. To “unlock” buttons, press and release the LOCK button again. The Lock icondisappears and all buttons will beunlocked.External Speaker/Microphone JackYour microTALK®radio can be fitted with anexternal speaker/microphone, freeing yourhands for other tasks. (Earbud microphonesare included with your FRS 307-2 VP–seeenclosed instruction sheet. For additionalaccessories (sold separately) see page 16.)To attach an external speaker/microphone:1. Open the SPKR/MIC tab on top of the unit.2. Insert the plug into the SPKR/MIC jack.Using the MODE buttonThe MODE button allows you to use andprogram the various functions of yourmicroTALK®radio. You cannot receive incoming calls while pressing the TALK button.“Roger Beep” Confirmation ToneYour listener will hear an audible tone when yourelease the TALK button. This alerts the other part ythat you are finished talking and it is OK for themto speak. (NOTE: To learn moreabout the range of your microTALK®radio, see page 13.)Maximum Range ExtenderYou can temporarily turn off Auto Squelch,allowing all signals to be received andextending the maximum range of your radio:1. Press and hold the LIGHT/MAX RANGEbutton for 5 seconds. You will hear 2 beeps indicating that Maximum RangeExtender is on.2. Push the MODEbutton until theMemory icon and the memorylocation flashes.2. Select the memorylocation you wish tochange by pushingthe CHANNEL SELECTbutton up or down.3. Press and release the MODE button again.The Memory icon and the main channelnumber will flash.4.Select the main channel you wish to s t o re bypushing the CHANNEL SELECT button up ord o w n .5. P ress the MODE button again to store themain channel in memory and move toprivacy code selection. The privacy codenumber begins flashing and the Memoryicon continues to flash.6. Select the privacy code (0-38) you wish to store by pushing the CHANNELSELECT button up or down.7. Press the TALK buttonto transmit on yourselected channel andprivacy code, which will be stored into the memory location you are using.8. Press and release the LOCK button to enterthe new setting, or press the MODE buttonto enter the new setting and proceed toother functions.Setting the VOX Sensitivity LevelYou can set the VOX sensitivity level to fit thevolume of your voice and avoid transmissionstriggered by background noise. To set thesensitivity:1. Press the MODE button until the VOX icon flashes and the number for the current sensitivity level is displayed next to the letter L (level 5 = most sensitive,level 1 = least sensitive).2. Push the CHANNEL SELECT button up ordown to change the setting.3. OPERATIONOPERATIONUsing the Scan Function(continued)To scan privacy codes:1. While in Standby mode, press the CHANNEL SELECT button up or down tochoose the main channel you wish to scan.2. Press the MODE button until the Scan icon and the privacy code number flashes.3. Push the CHANNEL SELECT button up or down and the unit will begin scanning privacy codes within the main channel you selected.4. The radio will continue to scan privacycodes and stop if an incomingtransmission is detected. The unit willremain on that code for 10 seconds.During that time you can:a) Press and hold the TALK button and talk.The radio will remain on that channel andprivacy code, then return to Standby mode.b) Push the CHANNEL SELECT button up ordown to resume scanning privacy codes.c) Press the MODE button to proceed to memory location scanning.If you do not press any button within 10 seconds, the radio will automaticallyresume scanning privacy codes.To scan memory locations:1. Press the MODE button until the Scan icon,Memory Location icon and memorylocation number flashes.2. To go on to the nextfunction withoutselecting a memory location, press the MODE button.3. Repeat steps 1 and  2 to recall othermemory locations.Using the Scan FunctionYour microTALK®radio can automatically scan main channels (1-14), the privacy codes (0-38) within one main channel, or memory locations.To scan main channels:1. Press the MODE button until the Scan iconand main channel number flashes.2. Push the CHANNEL SELECT button up or down and the unit will begin scanningthe main channels. (NOTE: The unit“ignores” privacy codes while scanning main channels.)3. The radio will continue to scan all mainchannels and stop if an incomingtransmission is detected. The unit willremain on that channel for 10 seconds.During that time you can:a) Press and hold the TALK button and talk. The radio will remain on that channel and return to Standby mode.b) Push the CHANNEL SELECT button up or down to resume scanning mainchannels.c) Press the MODE button to proceed to privacy code scanning (see followingpage).If you do not press any button within 10 seconds, the radio will automaticallyresume scanning main channels.ENGLISH9MODE buttonCHANNEL SELECT buttonMODE buttonLOCKbutton

To program Dual Watch:1. Select the first channel and privacy codeyou wish to monitor. (To review, see pages 3-4.)2. Press the MODE button until the DualWatch icon flashes.3. Push the CHANNELSELECT button up ordown to select thesecond channel you wish to monitor.4. Press the MODE button. The privacy codeflashes.5. If no buttons are pushed for 15 seconds,the unit will automatically enter the lastcall tone pattern that was displayed.microTALK®RangeYour microTALK®radio has a range of up to 2miles (3 km). Your range will vary dependingon terrain and conditions. In flat, open countryyour radio will operate at maximum range.Buildings and foliage in the path of the signalcan reduce the range.
