With the radio On,select any of the22 channels bypushing theCHANNEL SELECT button up or down.(NOTE: Both radios must be tuned to the same channel to communicate.)Selecting a CTCSS Privacy CodeCTCSS (Continuous Tone Coded SquelchSystem) is an advanced tone coding systemallowing you to select one of 38 privacycodes to reduce interference from other userson the channel. (NOTE: If you are using aprivacy code, both radios must be tuned tothe same channel and privacy code tocommunicate. Each channel will remember the last privacy code you selected.)To select a privacy code:1. Rotate the ON-OFF/VOLUMEswitch clockwiseto turn On theradio (and toadjust the volume). An audible tone willindicate the radio is On.Your microTALK®is now in Standby mode,ready to receive transmissions. The radio isalways in Standby mode except when theTALK, CALL, or MODE buttons are pressed.Battery LowBattery power is indicated by the segmentsappearing at the bottom of the LCD. Asbattery power decreases, fewer segments willbe visible. When bA Lo begins to flash, thebatteries should be replaced. If you are usingrechargeable batteries, they should be recharged.Auto Battery SaveYour microTALK®radio has a unique circuitdesigned to extend battery life. If there are notransmissions within ten (10) seconds, theradio will automatically switch to Battery Savemode and POWER SAVER will appear in thedisplay. OPERATIONTo turn Maximum Range Extender On:1. Press and hold the LIGHT/MAX RANGEbutton for at least five (5) seconds untilyou hear two (2) beeps which indicatesthe Maximum Range Extender is On.To turn Maximum Range Extender Off:1. Press and release the LIGHT/MAX RANGEbutton or change channels.Using the Lock FunctionThe Lock function locks the CHANNEL, MODEand HI/LOW POWER buttons to preventaccidental operation. To use the Lock function:1. While in Standbymode, press andhold the LOCKbutton for one (1)second. The Lockicon will blink when the radio islocked. Buttonsthat are NOTlocked are the CALL, LOCK, LIGHT/MAXRANGE, TALK buttons, and ON-OFF/VOLUME switch which are all fullyfunctional while the radio is locked.2. To “unlock” buttons, press and release the LOCK button again. The Lock icondisappears and all buttons will be unlocked.External Speaker/Microphone JackYour microTALK®radio can be fitted with anexternal speaker/microphone, freeing yourhands for other tasks. (See page 16 foroptional accessories.)To attach an externalspeaker/microphone:1. Open the SPKR/MIC tab on top of the radio.2. Insert the plug into the SPKR/MIC jack. OPERATION•ADVANCED FEATURES OPERATIONENGLISH8Programming Memory LocationsYour microTALK®radio has ten (10) memorylocations (0-9) for storing your mostfrequently used channels and privacy codes. To program locations:1. Push the MODE button until the Memory icon and the memorylocation flashes.2. Select the memory location you wish to change by pushing the CHANNEL SELECT button up or down.3. Press and releasethe MODE buttonagain. The Memoryicon and the mainchannel numberwill flash.4. Select the main channel you wish to store by pushing the CHANNEL SELECTbutton up or down.5. Press the MODEbutton again to storethe main channel inmemory andmoveto privacy codeselection. The privacy code number beginsflashing and the Memory icon continues toflash.6. Select the privacy code (00-38) you wish to store by pushing the CHANNEL SELECTbutton up or down.7. Press the LOCKbutton to programyour selection. You may also pressthe TALK button totransmit yourselected channel and privacy code, which willbe stored into the memory location you areusing. (NOTE: To “unprogram” a memorylocation you programmed previously, select00 for both the main channel and privacycode in steps 4 through 6.)8. Press the MODEbutton until theScan icon and main channel number flashes.2. Push the CHANNEL SELECT button up ordown and the radio will begin scanningthe main channels. (NOTE: The radio“ignores” privacy codes while scanning main channels.)3. The radio will continue to scan all main channels and stop if an incomingtransmission is detected. The radio willremain on that channel for ten (10)seconds. During that time you can:a) Press and holdthe TALK buttonand talk. The radio will continue to scan privacy codesand stop if an incoming transmission isdetected. The radio will remain on that codefor ten (10) seconds. During that time you can: a) Press and hold the TALK button andtalk. The radio will remain on thatchannel and privacy code, then returnto Standby mode.b) Push the CHANNEL SELECT button up ordown to resume scanning privacy codes.c) Press the MODE button to proceed tomemory location scanning (see below).If you do not press any button within ten(10) seconds, the radio will automaticallyresume scanning privacy codes.To scan memory locations:1. Press the MODE button until the Scan icon, Memory Location icon and memorylocation number flashes.2. Push the CHANNEL SELECT button up ordown and the radio will begin scanningmemory locations.3. See Programming MemoryLocations, page 8.)“Roger Beep” Confirmation ToneYour listener will hear an audible tone whenyou release the TALK button. This alerts theother party that you are finished talking and it is OK for them to speak. This feature can be turned On or Off.To turn “Roger Beep” On or Off:When turning On your microTALK®radio forthe first time, “Roger Beep” will be On.1. Press the MODE button until the “RogerBeep’’ icon flashes on the LCD. The currentOn or Off setting is displayed.2. High/Low PowerWhen in close proximity to another party, or during favorable conditions, you can switchfrom High to Low Power to extend battery life. (NOTE: This feature applies to GMRS channels1 through 7 and 15 through 22 only. Channels8 through 14 operate exclusively on low power.)To switch from high to low power: 1. Press and release the HI/LOW button. When in low power, and when usingchannels 8 through 14, the LOW icon will be visible in the LCD display.Signal Strength MeterYour microTALK®radio is equipped with a signalstrength meter that shows the strength of yourincoming or outgoing transmissions. The ascendingbars next to the signal strength indicate thestrength of the signal. The greater the number of bars visible, the stronger the signal. The fewernumber of bars visible, the weaker the signal. microTALK®RangeYour microTALK®radio has a range of up to six (6) miles (10 km) when using GMRSchannels on HI power. In LOW power and onchannels 8 through 14, your radio’s range is upto two (2) miles (3 km). Your range will varydepending on terrain and conditions. In flat,open country your radio will operate atmaximum range. Buildings and foliage in the path of the signalcan reduce the range. Dense foliage and hilly terrain will furtherreduce the signal.Remember, you can achieve maximum range by using Maximum Range Extender.
