2Functional OverviewThe WLAN PCMCIA is designed to operate in the 2.4GHz ISMfrequency band, channels 1 to 11, as specified by the FCC inthe USA. The Card will also operate on channels 12 through14, where permitted by local regulatory authorities. Radioequipment must be certified in a country prior to use. Refer toTable 3 for a list of countries and agencies that have approvedthe ISL37101P-EVAL for operation. The Intersil PRISM Chip Set allows for high level integrationfor reduced size, increased throughput, improved radioperformance and faster time to market. The WLAN PCMCIAimplements Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum DSSStechnology providing superior noise and signal jammingimmunity including less severe impact from unintentionalradiators such as microwave ovens. The user can connectthe PCMCIA in an ad-hoc peer to peer networking scheme, allowing for instant network setup in any office environment.By using an access point, the wireless LAN can be set up toallow for a greater number of users to interconnect, and toincrease the coverage area. With a portal (i.e., Access Point),the wireless LAN can be easily connected into an existingwired LAN, allowing for easy expansion of the service.Compared to the PRISM II chip set, the PRISM 3 generationoffers:• Front end designed for maximum range• Higher level of chip integration and less peripheralcomponents to reduce material costs (3-chip solution)• Support of optional IEEE 802.11 Short Preamble forsignificantly increased data throughput with room foradditional user defined functions• Has a PCMCIA interface / Type 3A form factorA complete Reference Design for the ISL37101P is availableto ensure minimum time-to-market. This information containsdetails for manufacturing a PCMCIA WLAN assembly, including Gerber PC board files, an accurate Bill of Materialwith component sourcing and complete mechanical drawingsand a complete Radio Description and test plan.Related Literature• Tech Brief TB337, Intersil Corporation, “A Brief Tutorial onSpread Spectrum and Packet Radio”[1].• Application Note AN9861, Intersil Corporation,“ISL37101P-EVAL PRISM 3 11 Mb PCMCIA WirelessLAN Radio Description” [2].• Tech Brief TB382, Intersil Corporation, “Measurement ofWLAN Receiver Sensitivity” [3].• Application Note AN9850, Intersil Corporation,“Complementary Code Keying Made Simple” [4].• Application Note AN9829, Intersil Corporation, “BriefTutorial on IEEE 802.11 Wireless LANs” [5].• Application Note AN9820, Intersil Corporation, “ACondensed Review of Spread Spectrum Techniques forISM Band Systems” [6].The ISL3871 Media Access Controller(MAC) Protocol HandlerThe ISL3871 MAC/Baseband Processor and its firmware areresponsible for running the IEEE 802.11 protocol in theWLAN card. 3IEEE 802.11 International Agreement andFrequency AssignmentsThe IEEE 802.11WLAN committee has forged aninternational agreement providing for wireless datacommunication standards for the frequency range of2.4GHz to 2.4835GHz, as allocated by the FCC in the USA,and in the 2.471GHz to 2.497GHz frequency range, asspecified by the regulatory authority in Japan. Thesestandards are designed to focus the industry to develophighly integrated, low cost, interoperable WLAN equipment,of which the ISL37101P-EVAL is a prime example. In the U.S., there are 11 channels specified by the FCC inthe 2.412GHz to 2.462GHz range. In Japan, channel 14 at2.484GHz is authorized under ARIB STD-33 and channels1-13 are authorized under ARIB STD-T66. The ETSl(European) regulatory body conforms to the USA (FCC)channel assignments with the exception that channels 12and 13 are also allowed. Some countries in Europe, notablyFrance and Spain have unique channel restrictions.Although information contained in Table 3 is deemed to beaccurate, local regulatory authorities should be consultedbefore using such equipment. The available channels of operation in the 2.4GHz to2.4835GHz and 2.471GHz to 2.497GHz ranges are as follows:The ISL37101P is shipped with FCC-compliant firmware. Inorder to ensure regulatory-compliant channel usage in aparticular country, special geographic-specific firmware isavailable for customer production assemblies which restrictschannel usage. Examples include ETSI-compliant firmware, etc. Since the end user does not have the ability to alter thisfirmware, regulatory compliance is ensured.Agency and Regulatory Body ApprovalsThe WLAN PCMCIA will comply to the standards shown inTable 4:FCC Information to UserThis product does not contain any user serviceablecomponents and is to be used with approved antennas only.Any product changes or modifications will invalidate allapplicable regulatory certifications and approvals.FCC Electronic Emission NoticesThis device complies with part 15 of the FCC Rules.Operation is subject to the following two conditions:1. This device may not cause harmful interference2. This device must accept any interference received, including interference that may cause undesiredoperation.FCC Radio Frequency Interference statementThis equipment has been tested and found to comply withthe limits for a class B digital device, pursuant to Part 15 ofthe FCC Rules. These limits are designed to providereasonable protection against harmful interference when theequipment is operated in a commercial environment. Thisequipment generates, uses and can radiate radio frequencyenergy and, if not installed and used in accordance with theinstructions, may cause harmful interference to radiocommunications.TABLE 3.
